Consider the equation $-s^2Δu_s+q(x)u_s=f(u_s)$ in $\R^3$, $|u(\infty)|<\infty$, $s=const>0$. Under what assumptions on $q(x)$ and $f(u)$ can one prove that the solution $u_s$ exists and $\lim_{s\to 0} u_s=u(x)$, where $u(x)$ solves the limiting problem $q(x)u=f(u)$? These are the questions discussed in the paper.
We study Bloch wave homogenization of periodically heterogeneous media with fourth order singular perturbations. We recover different homogenization regimes depending on the relative strength of the singular perturbation and length scale of the periodic heterogeneity. The homogenized tensor is obtained in terms of the first Bloch eigenvalue. The higher Bloch modes do not contribute to the homogenization limit.
We study the singular perturbation of an elastic energy with a singular weight. The minimization of this energy results in a multi-scale pattern formation. We derive an energy scaling law in terms of the perturbation parameter and prove that, although one cannot expect periodicity of minimizers, the energy of a minimizer is uniformly distributed across the sample. Finally, following the approach developed by Alberti and Müller in 2001 we prove that a sequence of minimizers of the perturbed energies converges to a Young measure supported on functions of slope $\pm 1$ and of period depending on …
We investigate quantitative estimates in periodic homogenization of second-order elliptic systems of elasticity with singular fourth-order perturbations. The convergence rates, which depend on the scale $κ$ that represents the strength of the singular perturbation and on the length scale $ε$ of the heterogeneities, are established. We also obtain the large-scale Lipschitz estimate, down to the scale $ε$ and independent of $κ$. This large-scale estimate, when combined with small-scale estimates, yields the classical Lipschitz estimate that is uniform in both $ε$ and $κ$.
We prove that an a priori BMO gradient estimate for the two phase singular perturbation problem implies Lipschitz regularity for the limits. This problem arises in the mathematical theory of combustion where the reaction-diffusion is modelled by the $p$-Laplacian. A key tool in our approach is the weak energy identity. Our method proves a natural and intrinsic characterization of the free boundary points and can be applied to more general classes of solutions.
We prove rate of convergence results for singular perturbations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations in unbounded spaces where the fast operator is linear, uniformly elliptic and has an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type drift. The slow operator is a fully nonlinear elliptic operator while the source term is assumed only locally Hölder continuous in both fast and slow variables. We obtain several rates of convergence according on the regularity of the source term.
The paper is aimed at analysing a singular perturbation of the Navier-Stokes equations on a compact closed manifold. The case of compact smooth manifolds with boundary under the Dirichlet conditions is also included. Global existence and uniqueness is established for the weak solutions of the Cauchy problem. The solution of the regularised system is shown to converge to the solution of the conventional Navier-Stokes equations provided it is uniformly bounded in parameter.
We study here a singular perturbation problem of biLaplacian type, which can be seen as the biharmonic counterpart of classical combustion models. We provide different results, that include the convergence to a free boundary problem driven by a biharmonic operator, as introduced in a previous paper of ours, and a monotonicity formula in the plane. For the latter result, an important tool is provided by an integral identity that is satisfied by solutions of the singular perturbation problem. We also investigate the quadratic behaviour of solutions near the zero level set, at least for small val…
In this article, we deal with some problems involving a class of singularly perturbed elliptic operator. We prove the asymptotic preserving of a general Galerkin method associated to a semilinear problem. We use a particular Galerkin approximation to estimate the convergence rate on the whole domain, for the linear problem. Finally, we study the asymptotic behavior of the semigroup generated.
We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by the $(p,q)$-Laplacian and with a reaction which is parametric and exhibits the combined effects of a singular term and of a superdiffusive one. We prove an existence and nonexistence result for positive solutions depending on the value of the parameter $λ\in \overset{\circ}{\mathbb{R}}_+=(0,+\infty)$.
We study the effect of regular and singular domain perturbations on layer potential operators for the Laplace equation. First, we consider layer potentials supported on a diffeomorphic image $ϕ(\partialΩ)$ of a reference set $\partialΩ$ and we present some real analyticity results for the dependence upon the map $ϕ$. Then we introduce a perforated domain $Ω(ε)$ with a small hole of size $ε$ and we compute power series expansions that describe the layer potentials on $\partialΩ(ε)$ when the parameter $ε$ approximates the degenerate value $ε=0$.
Asymptotic stability is with no doubts an essential property to be studied for any system. This analysis often becomes very difficult for coupled systems and even harder when different timescales appear. The singular perturbation method allows to decouple a full system into what are called the reduced order system and the boundary layer system, to get simpler stability conditions for the original system. In the infinite-dimensional setting, we do not have a general result making sure this strategy works. This papers is devoted to this analysis for some systems coupling the Korteweg-the Vries e…
We study singular perturbations of a class of two-scale stochastic control systems with unbounded data. The assumptions are designed to cover some relaxation problems for deep neural networks. We construct effective Hamiltonian and initial data and prove the convergence of the value function to the solution of a limit (effective) Cauchy problem for a parabolic equation of HJB type. We use methods of probability, viscosity solutions and homogenization.
We study the dependence of mild solutions to linear stochastic evolution equations on Hilbert space driven by Wiener noise, with drift having linear part of the type $A+\varepsilon G$, on the parameter $\varepsilon$. In particular, we study the limit and the asymptotic expansions in powers of $\varepsilon$ of these solutions, as well as of functionals thereof, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, with good control on the remainder. These convergence and series expansion results are then applied to a parabolic perturbation of the Musiela SPDE of mathematical finance modeling the dynamics of forward rates.
The paper discusses nonlinear singular perturbations of delta type of the fractional Schrödinger equation $\imath\partial_tψ=\left(-\triangle\right)^sψ$, with $s\in(\frac{1}{2},1]$, in dimension one. Precisely, we investigate local and global well posedness (in a strong sense), conservations laws and existence of blow-up solutions and standing waves.
Motivated by results of Figalli and Jerison and Hernández, we prove the following formula: \begin{equation*} \lim_{ε\to 0^+}\frac{1}{|\lnε|}\big\|η_ε*u\big\|^q_{W^{1/q,q}(Ω)}= C_0\int_{J_u}\Big|u^+(x)-u^-(x)\Big|^qd\mathcal{H}^{N-1}(x), \end{equation*} where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ is a regular domain, $u\in BV(Ω)\cap L^\infty$, $q>1$ and $η_ε(z)=ε^{-N}η(z/ε)$ is a smooth mollifier. In addition, we apply the above formula to the study of certain singular perturbation problems.
