This paper concerns singular perturbation problems where the dynamics of the fast variable evolve in the whole space according to an operator whose infinitesimal generator is formed by a Grushin type second order part and a Ornstein-Uhlenbeck first order part. We prove that the dynamics of the fast variables admits an invariant measure and that the associated ergodic problem has a viscosity solution which is also regular and with logarithmic growth at infinity. These properties play a crucial role in the main theorem which establishes that the value functions of the starting perturbation problems converge to the solution of an effective problem whose operator and initial datum are given in terms of the associated invariant measure.
In this paper we introduce a new double phase Baouendi-Grushin type operator with variable coefficients. We give basic properties of the corresponding functions space and prove a compactness result. In the second part, using topological argument, we prove the existence of weak solutions of some nonvariational problems in which this new operator is present. The present paper extends and complements some of our previous contributions related to double phase anisotropic variational integrals.
This paper is dedicated to approximate controllability for Grushin equation on the rectangle $(x,y) \in (-1,1) \times (0,1)$ with an inverse square potential. This model corresponds to the heat equation for the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to the Grushin metric on $\mathbb{R}^2$, studied by Boscain and Laurent. The operator is both degenerate and singular on the line $\{ x=0 \}$. The approximate controllability is studied through unique continuation of the adjoint system. For the range of singularity under study, approximate controllability is proved to hold whatever the degeneracy is.…
In this paper, we extend the results of [1] by proving exponential asymptotic $H^1$-convergence of solutions to a one-dimensional singular heat equation with $L^2$-source term that describe evolution of viscous thin liquid sheets while considered in the Lagrange coordinates. Furthermore, we extend this asymptotic convergence result to the case of a time inhomogeneous source. This study has also independent interest for the porous medium equation theory.
We study here a singular perturbation problem of biLaplacian type, which can be seen as the biharmonic counterpart of classical combustion models. We provide different results, that include the convergence to a free boundary problem driven by a biharmonic operator, as introduced in a previous paper of ours, and a monotonicity formula in the plane. For the latter result, an important tool is provided by an integral identity that is satisfied by solutions of the singular perturbation problem. We also investigate the quadratic behaviour of solutions near the zero level set, at least for small val…
Let $0\le u_0(x)\in L^1(\R^2)\cap L^{\infty}(\R^2)$ be such that $u_0(x) =u_0(|x|)$ for all $|x|\ge r_1$ and is monotone decreasing for all $|x|\ge r_1$ for some constant $r_1>0$ and ${ess}\inf_{\2{B}_{r_1}(0)}u_0\ge{ess} \sup_{\R^2\setminus B_{r_2}(0)}u_0$ for some constant $r_2>r_1$. Then under some mild decay conditions at infinity on the initial value $u_0$ we will extend the result of P. Daskalopoulos, M.A. del Pino and N. Sesum \cite{DP2}, \cite{DS}, and prove the collapsing behaviour of the maximal solution of the equation $u_t=Δ\log u$ in $\R^2\times (0,T)$, $u(x,0)=u_0(x)$ in $\R^2$, …
We show that the boundary behaviour of solutions to nonlocal fractional equations posed in bounded domains strongly differs from the one of solutions to elliptic problems modelled upon the Laplace-Poisson equation with zero boundary data. In this classical case it is known that, at least in a suitable weak sense, solutions of non-homogeneous Dirichlet problem are unique and tend to zero at the boundary. Limits of these solutions then produce solutions of some non-homogeneous Dirichlet problem as the interior data concentrate suitably to the boundary. Here, we show that such results are false f…
For $n\ge 3$, $0<m<\frac{n-2}{n}$, $β<0$ and $α=\frac{2β}{1-m}$, we prove the existence, uniqueness and asymptotics near the origin of the singular eternal self-similar solutions of the fast diffusion equation in $(\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\})\times \mathbb{R}$ of the form $U_λ(x,t)=e^{-αt}f_λ(e^{-βt}x), x\in \mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\}, t\in\mathbb{R},$ where $f_λ$ is a radially symmetric function satisfying $$\frac{n-1}{m}Δf^m+αf+βx\cdot\nabla f=0 \text{ in }\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\},$$ with $\underset{\substack{r\to 0}}{\lim}\frac{r^2f(r)^{1-m}}{\log r^{-1}}=\frac{2(n-1)(n-2-nm)}{|β|(1-m)}$ …
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the heat content on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and with singular specific heat and singular initial temperature distributions. Assuming the existence of a complete asymptotic series we determine the first three terms in that series. In addition to the general setting, the interval is studied in detail.
We study properties of nonnegative functions satisfying (E)$\;-Δu+u^p-M|\nabla u|^q=0$ is a domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$ when $p>1$, $M>0$ and $1<q<p$. We concentrate our analysis on the solutions of (E) with an isolated singularity, or in an exterior domain, or in the whole space. The existence of such solutions and their behaviours depend strongly on the values of the exponents $p$ and $q$ and in particular according to the sign of $q-\frac{2p}{p+1}$, and when $q=\frac{2p}{p+1}$, also on the value of the parameter $M$ which becomes a key element. The description of the different behaviours is ma…
We investigate existence and qualitative behaviour of solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations with critical exponent and singular electromagnetic potentials. We are concerned with magnetic vector potentials which are homogeneous of degree -1, including the Aharonov-Bohm class. In particular, by variational arguments we prove a result of multiplicity of solutions distinguished by symmetry properties.
We study the long-time behaviour of a population structured by age and a phenotypic trait under a selection-mutation dynamics. By analysing spectral properties of a family of positive operators on measure spaces, we show the existence of eventually singular stationary solutions. When the stationary measures are absolutely continuous with a continuous density, we show the convergence of the dynamics to the unique equilibrium.
We report on some recent existence and uniqueness results for elliptic equations subject to Dirichlet boundary condition and involving a singular nonlinearity. We take into account the following types of problems: (i) singular problems with sublinear nonlinearity and two parameters; (ii) combined effects of asymptotically linear and singular nonlinearities in bifurcation problems; (iii) bifurcation for a class of singular elliptic problems with subquadratic convection term. In some concrete situations we also establish the asymptotic behaviour of the solution around the bifurcation point. Our …
We study Liouville-type theorems and the asymptotic behaviour of positive solutions near an isolated singular point $ζ\in\partialΩ\cup\{\infty\}$ of the quasilinear elliptic equations $$-\text{div}(|\nabla u|_A^{p-2}A\nabla u)+V|u|^{p-2}u =0\quad\text{in } Ω\setminus\{ζ\},$$ where $Ω$ is a domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d\geq 2$), and $A=(a_{ij})\in L_{\rm loc}^{\infty}(Ω;\mathbb{R}^{d\times d})$ is a symmetric and locally uniformly positive definite matrix. The potential $V$ lies in a certain local Morrey space (depending on $p$) and has a Fuchsian-type isolated singularity at $ζ$.
Our main goal is the comparative study of singularities of solutions to the systems of first order quasilinear PDEs and their perturbations containing higher derivatives. The study is focused on the subclass of Hamiltonian PDEs with one spatial dimension. For the systems of order one or two we describe the local structure of singularities of a generic solution to the unperturbed system near the point of "gradient catastrophe" in terms of standard objects of the classical singularity theory; we argue that their perturbed companions must be given by certain special solutions of Painleve' equatio…
We study the limit behaviour of solutions of a class of solutions of nonlinear parabolic equations with a degenerate strong absorption. We prove that two types of phenomena can occur: the pointwise singularity or the formation of razor blades (or persistent singularities).
We study the blow-up behaviour of minimizing sequences for the singular Moser-Trudinger functional on compact surfaces. Assuming non-existence of minimum points, we give an estimate for the infimum value of the functional. This result can be applied to give sharp Onofri-type inequalities on the sphere in the presence of at most two singularities.
The precise asymptotic behaviour of the solutions to the twodimensional curvature equation $Δu=k(z) e^{2 u}$ with $e^{2 u} \in L^1$ for bounded nonnegative curvature functions $-k(z)$ near isolated singularities is obtained.
In this note we investigate the behaviour at finite-time singularities of the mean curvature flow of compact Riemannian submanifolds M^m_t\hookrightarrow (N^{m+n}, h). We show that they are characterized by the blow-up of a trace A = H \cdot II of the square of the second fundamental form.
The long time behaviour of solutions to generalised stochastic porous media equations on bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary data is studied. We focus on a degenerate form of nonlinearity arising in self-organised criticality. Based on the so-called lower-bound method, the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure is proved.
We analyse the ill-posedness of the photoacoustic imaging problem in the case of an attenuating medium. To this end, we introduce an attenuated photoacoustic operator and determine the asymptotic behaviour of its singular values. Dividing the known attenuation models into strong and weak attenuation classes, we show that for strong attenuation, the singular values of the attenuated photoacoustic operator decay exponentially, and in the weak attenuation case the singular values of the attenuated photoacoustic operator decay with the same rate as the singular values of the non-attenuated photoac…
We study the inverse scattering problem for electric potentials and magnetic fields in $\ere^d, d\geq 3$, that are asymptotic sums of homogeneous terms at infinity. The main result is that all these terms can be uniquely reconstructed from the singularities in the forward direction of the scattering amplitude at some positive energy.
