We study the observability properties of the Grushin equation with an inverse square potential, whose singularity occurs at the boundary of two-dimensional rectangular domains or in the interior of the domain in higher dimensions. In some specific configurations of the observation set, we obtain the exact minimal time of observability. The analysis we present relies on recent Carleman estimates obtained by K. Beauchard, J. Dardé, and S. Ervedoza. As a byproduct of these results, we observe, for the heat equation associated to the Laplace-Beltrami operator on almost-Riemannian manifolds, a dependence of the minimal time of observability on the dimension of the singularity.
We consider two dimensional Grushin Schrödinger equation posed on a finite cylinder $Ω=(-1,1)_x\times \T_y$ with Dirichlet boundary condition. We obtain the sharp observability by any horizontal strip, with the optimal time $T_*>0$ depending on the size of the strip. Consequently, we prove the exact controllability for Grushin Schrödinger equation. By exploiting the concentration of eigenfunctions of harmonic oscillator at $x=0$, we also show that the observability fails for any $T\leq T_*$.
In this article, we study the observability (or, equivalently, the controllability) of some subelliptic evolution equations depending on their step. This sheds light on the speed of propagation of these equations, notably in the "degenerated directions" of the subelliptic structure. First, for any $γ\geq 1$, we establish a resolvent estimate for the Baouendi-Grushin-type operator $Δ_γ=\partial_x^2+|x|^{2γ}\partial_y^2$, which has step $γ+1$. We then derive consequences for the observability of the Schr\''odinger type equation $i\partial_tu-(-Δ_γ)^{s}u=0$ where $s\in N$. We identify three diffe…
This paper is dedicated to approximate controllability for Grushin equation on the rectangle $(x,y) \in (-1,1) \times (0,1)$ with an inverse square potential. This model corresponds to the heat equation for the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to the Grushin metric on $\mathbb{R}^2$, studied by Boscain and Laurent. The operator is both degenerate and singular on the line $\{ x=0 \}$. The approximate controllability is studied through unique continuation of the adjoint system. For the range of singularity under study, approximate controllability is proved to hold whatever the degeneracy is.…
This paper is devoted to the study of the internal null-controllability of the Grushin equation. We determine the minimal time of controllability for a large class of non-rectangular control region. We establish the positive result thanks to the fictitious control method and the negative one by interpreting the associated observability inequality as an $L^2$ estimate on complex polynomials.
In this paper we introduce a new double phase Baouendi-Grushin type operator with variable coefficients. We give basic properties of the corresponding functions space and prove a compactness result. In the second part, using topological argument, we prove the existence of weak solutions of some nonvariational problems in which this new operator is present. The present paper extends and complements some of our previous contributions related to double phase anisotropic variational integrals.
The approach to Lipschitz stability for uniformly parabolic equations introduced by Imanuvilov and Yamamoto in 1998, based on Carleman estimates, seems hard to apply to the case of Grushin-type operators of interest to this paper. Indeed, such estimates are still missing for parabolic operators degenerating in the interior of the space domain. Nevertheless, we are able to prove Lipschitz stability results for inverse source problems for such operators, with locally distributed measurements in arbitrary space dimension. For this purpose, we follow a mixed strategy which combines the appraoch du…
This paper concerns singular perturbation problems where the dynamics of the fast variable evolve in the whole space according to an operator whose infinitesimal generator is formed by a Grushin type second order part and a Ornstein-Uhlenbeck first order part. We prove that the dynamics of the fast variables admits an invariant measure and that the associated ergodic problem has a viscosity solution which is also regular and with logarithmic growth at infinity. These properties play a crucial role in the main theorem which establishes that the value functions of the starting perturbation probl…
We are interested in the exact null controllability of the equation $\partial_t f - \partial_x^2 f - x^2 \partial_y^2f = \mathbf 1_ωu$, with control $u$ supported on $ω$. We show that, when $ω$ does not intersect a horizontal band, the considered equation is never null-controllable. The main idea is to interpret the associated observability inequality as an $L^2$ estimate on entire functions, which Runge's theorem disproves. To that end, we study in particular the first eigenvalue of the operator $-\partial_x^2 + (nx)^2$ with Dirichlet conditions on $(-1,1)$ and we show a quite precise estimat…
We study the null controllability of the parabolic equation associated with the Grushin-type operator $A=\partial_x^2+|x|^{2γ}\partial_y^2\,, (γ>0),$ in the rectangle $Ω=(-1,1)\times(0,1)$, under an additive control supported in the strip $ω=(a,b)\times(0,1)\,, (0<a,b<1)$. We prove that the equation is null controllable in any positive time for $γ<1$, and that it fails to be so for $γ>1$. In the transition regime $γ=1$, we show that both behaviors live together: a positive minimal time is required for null controllability. Our approach is based on the fact that, thanks to the particular geomet…

Based on a fundamental identity for stochastic hyperbolic-like operators, we derive in this paper a global Carleman estimate (with singular weight function) for stochastic wave equations. This leads to an observability estimate for stochastic wave equations with non-smooth lower order terms. Moreover, the observability constant is estimated by an explicit function of the norm of the involved coefficients in the equation.
We establish a new family of Carleman inequalities for wave operators on cylindrical spacetime domains containing a potential that is critically singular, diverging as an inverse square on all the boundary of the domain. These estimates are sharp in the sense that they capture both the natural boundary conditions and the natural $H^1$-energy. The proof is based around three key ingredients: the choice of a novel Carleman weight with rather singular derivatives on the boundary, a generalization of the classical Morawetz inequality that allows for inverse-square singularities, and the systematic…
We consider a transport equation by a gradient vector field with a small viscous perturbation --$εΔ_g$. We study uniform observability (resp. controllability) properties in the (singular) vanishing viscosity limit $ε\rightarrow 0^+$, that is, the possibility of having a uniformly bounded observation constant (resp. control cost). We prove with a series of examples that in general, the minimal time for uniform observability may be much larger than the minimal time needed for the observability of the limit equation $ε= 0$. We also prove that the two minimal times coincides for positive solutions…
We find the fundamental solution to the p-Laplace equation in a class of Hörmander vector fields that generate neither a Carnot group nor a Grushin-type space. The singularity occurs at the sub-Riemannian points which naturally corresponds to finding the fundamental solution of a generalized operator in Euclidean space. We then use this solution to find an infinite harmonic function with specific boundary data and to compute the capacity of annuli centered at the singularity.
We define and study $C^1-$solutions of the Aronsson equation (AE), a second order quasi linear equation. We show that such super/subsolutions make the Hamiltonian monotone on the trajectories of the closed loop Hamiltonian dynamics. We give a short, general proof that $C^1-$solutions are absolutely minimizing functions. We discuss how $C^1-$supersolutions of (AE) become special Lyapunov functions of symmetric control systems, and allow to find continuous feedbacks driving the system to a target in finite time, except on a singular manifold. A consequence is a simple proof that the correspondin…

The goal of this paper is to analyze control properties of the parabolic equation with variable coefficients in the principal part and with a singular inverse-square potential:\,$\partial_tu(x,t)-{\rm div}(p(x)\nabla u(x,t))-(μ/{|x|^2})u(x,t)=f(x,t).$ Here $μ$ is a real constant . It was proved in the paper of Goldstein and Zhang (2003) that the equation is well-posedness when $0\leq{μ\leq p_1(n-2)^2/4}$, and in this paper, we mainly consider the case $0\leqμ<({ p_1^2}/{ p_2})(n-2)^2/4$ , where $ p_1,p_2$ are two positive constants which satisfy:\, $ 0< p_1\leq p(x)\leq p_2 , \forall x\in\over…
In this paper, we deal with the boundary controllability of a one-dimensional degenerate and singular wave equation with degeneracy and singularity occurring at the boundary of the spatial domain. Exact boundary controllability is proved in the range of subcritical/critical potentials and for sufficiently large time, through a boundary controller acting away from the degenerate/singular point. By duality argument, we reduce the problem to an observability estimate for the corresponding adjoint system, which is proved by means of the multiplier method and a new special Hardy-type inequality.
We look at the long-time behaviour of solutions to a semi-classical Schrödinger equation on the torus. We consider time scales which go to infinity when the semi-classical parameter goes to zero and we associate with each time-scale the set of semi-classical measures associated with all possible choices of initial data. On each classical invariant torus, the structure of semi-classical measures is described in terms of two-microlocal measures, obeying explicit propagation laws. We apply this construction in two directions. We first analyse the regularity of semi-classical measures, and we emph…
We analyse the structure of semiclassical and microlocal Wigner measures for solutions to the linear Schrödinger equation on the disk, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our approach links the propagation of singularities beyond geometric optics with the completely integrable nature of the billiard in the disk. We prove a "structure theorem", expressing the restriction of the Wigner measures on each invariant torus in terms of {\em second-microlocal measures}. They are obtained by performing a finer localization in phase space around each of these tori, at the limit of the uncertainty princip…
