We study Bloch wave homogenization of periodically heterogeneous media with fourth order singular perturbations. We recover different homogenization regimes depending on the relative strength of the singular perturbation and length scale of the periodic heterogeneity. The homogenized tensor is obtained in terms of the first Bloch eigenvalue. The higher Bloch modes do not contribute to the homogenization limit.
In this work, we study the aspect of Bloch wave homogenization of the new notion of convergence of microstructures represented by matrices $B^ε$ related to the classical $H$-convergence of $A^ε$ introduced in \cite{TG-MV-1}. The new macro quantity $B^{#}$ appears to incorporate the interaction between the two microstructures $A^ε,B^ε$. Here we present its Bloch spectral representation along with the homogenization result.
In this work, we study the Bloch wave homogenization for the Stokes system with periodic viscosity coefficient. In particular, we obtain the spectral interpretation of the homogenized tensor. The presence of the incompressibility constraint in the model raises new issues linking the homogenized tensor and the Bloch spectral data. The main difficulty is a lack of smoothness for the bottom of the Bloch spectrum, a phenomenon which is not present in the case of the elasticity system. This issue is solved in the present work, completing the homogenization process of the Stokes system via the Bloch…
Quasiperiodic media is a class of almost periodic media which is generated from periodic media through a "cut and project" procedure. Bloch waves are typically defined through a direct integral decomposition of periodic operators. A suitable direct integral decomposition is not available for almost periodic operators. To remedy this, we lift an almost periodic operator to a degenerate periodic operator in higher dimensions. Approximate Bloch waves are obtained for a regularized version of the degenerate equation. Homogenized coefficients for quasiperiodic media are determined in terms of the f…
Bloch wave homogenization is a spectral method for obtaining effective coefficients for periodically heterogeneous media. This method hinges on the direct integral decomposition of periodic operators, which is not available in a suitable form for almost periodic operators. In particular, the notion of Bloch eigenvalues and eigenvectors does not exist for almost periodic operators. However, we are able to recover the homogenization result in this case, by employing a sequence of periodic approximations to almost periodic operators. We also establish a rate of convergence for approximations of h…
We consider the spectrum of a second-order elliptic operator in divergence form with periodic coefficients, which is known to be completely described by Bloch eigenvalues. We show that under small perturbations of the coefficients, a multiple Bloch eigenvalue can be made simple. The Bloch wave method of homogenization relies on the regularity of spectral edge. The spectral tools that we develop, allow us to obtain simplicity of an internal spectral edge through perturbation of the coefficients. As a consequence, we are able to establish Bloch wave homogenization at an internal edge in the pres…
We investigate second order linear wave equations in periodic media, aiming at the derivation of effective equations in $\R^n$, $n \in \{1, 2, 3\}$. Standard homogenization theory provides, for the limit of a small periodicity length $\eps>0$, an effective second order wave equation that describes solutions on time intervals $[0,T]$. In order to approximate solutions on large time intervals $[0,T\eps^{-2}]$, one has to use a dispersive, higher order wave equation. In this work, we provide a well-posed, weakly dispersive effective equation, and an estimate for errors between the solution of the…
In this paper, we use spectral methods by introducing the Bloch waves to study the homogenization process in the non-periodic class of generalized Hashin-Shtrikman micro-structures \cite[page no. 281]{T}, which incorporates both translation and dilation with a family of scales, including one subclass of laminates. We establish the classical homogenization result with providing the spectral representation of the homogenized coefficients. It offers a new lead towards extending the Bloch spectral analysis in the non-periodic, non-commutative class of micro-structures.
This article examines a linear-quadratic elliptic optimal control problem in which the cost functional and the state equation involve a highly oscillatory periodic coefficient $A^\varepsilon$. The small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ denotes the periodicity length. We propose a high-order effective control problem with constant coefficients that provides an approximation of the original one with error $O(\varepsilon^M)$, where $M\in\mathbb{N}$ is as large as one likes. Our analysis relies on a Bloch wave expansion of the optimal solution and is performed in two steps. In the first step, we expand t…
In [H. Ammari et al., Honeycomb-lattice Minnaert bubbles. arXiv:1811.03905], the existence of a Dirac dispersion cone in a bubbly honeycomb phononic crystal is shown. The aim of this paper is to prove that, near the Dirac points, the Bloch eigenfunctions is the sum of two eigenmodes. Each eigenmode can be decomposed into two components: one which is slowly varying and satisfies a homogenized equation, while the other is periodic across each elementary crystal cell and is highly oscillating. The slowly oscillating components of the eigenmodes satisfy a system of Dirac equations. Our results in …
Consider an elliptic operator in divergence form with symmetric coefficients. If the diffusion coefficients are periodic, the Bloch theorem allows one to diagonalize the elliptic operator, which is key to the spectral properties of the elliptic operator and the usual starting point for the study of its long-time homogenization. When the coefficients are not periodic (say, quasi-periodic, almost periodic, or random with decaying correlations at infinity), the Bloch theorem does not hold and both the spectral properties and the long-time behavior of the associatedoperator are unclear. At low freque…
A periodic homogenization result of nonconvex integral functionals in the vectorial case with convex bounded constraints on gradients is proved. The class of integrands considered have singular behavior near the boundary of the convex set of the constraints. We apply the result to the case of periodic homogenization in hyperelasticity for bounded gradients of deformations.
This paper is concerned with the high-frequency homogenization of bubbly phononic crystals. It is a follow-up of the works [H. Ammari et al., Sub-wavelength phononic bandgap opening in bubbly media, J. Diff. Eq., 263 (2017), 5610--5629] which shows the existence of a sub-wavelength band gap. This phenomena can be explained by the periodic inference of cell resonance which is due to the high contrast in both the density and bulk modulus between the bubbles and the surrounding medium. In this paper, we prove that the first Bloch eigenvalue achieves its maximum at the corner of the Brillouin zone…
We consider high frequency homogenization in periodic media for travelling waves of several different equations: the wave equation for scalar-valued waves such as acoustics; the wave equation for vector-valued waves such as electromagnetism and elasticity; and a system that encompasses the Schr{ö}dinger equation. This homogenization applies when the wavelength is of the order of the size of the medium periodicity cell. The travelling wave is assumed to be the sum of two waves: a modulated Bloch carrier wave having crystal wave vector $\Bk$ and frequency $ω_1$ plus a modulated Bloch carrier wav…
We continue the program initiated in a previous work, of applying integro-differential methods to Neumann Homogenization problems. We target the case of linear periodic equations with a singular drift, which includes (with some regularity assumptions) divergence equations with \emph{non-co-normal} oscillatory Neumann conditions. Our analysis focuses on an induced integro-differential homogenization problem on the boundary of the domain. Also, we use homogenization results for regular Dirichlet problems to build barriers for the oscillatory Neumann problem with the singular gradient term. We no…
We investigate quantitative estimates in periodic homogenization of second-order elliptic systems of elasticity with singular fourth-order perturbations. The convergence rates, which depend on the scale $κ$ that represents the strength of the singular perturbation and on the length scale $ε$ of the heterogeneities, are established. We also obtain the large-scale Lipschitz estimate, down to the scale $ε$ and independent of $κ$. This large-scale estimate, when combined with small-scale estimates, yields the classical Lipschitz estimate that is uniform in both $ε$ and $κ$.
We consider a quasi-linear homogenization problem in a two-dimensional pre-fractal domain $Ω_n$, for $n\in\mathbb{N}$, surrounded by thick fibers of amplitude $\varepsilon$. We introduce a sequence of "pre-homogenized" energy functionals and we prove that this sequence converges in a suitable sense to a quasi-linear fractal energy functional involving a $p$-energy on the fractal boundary. We prove existence and uniqueness results for (quasi-linear) pre-homogenized and homogenized fractal problems. The convergence of the solutions is also investigated.
We pursue a low-wavenumber, second-order homogenized solution of the time-harmonic wave equation at both low and high frequency in periodic media with a source term whose frequency resides inside a band gap. Considering the wave motion in an unbounded medium $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d\geqslant1$), we first use the (Floquet-)Bloch transform to formulate an equivalent variational problem in a bounded domain. By investigating the source term's projection onto certain periodic functions, the second-order model can then be derived via asymptotic expansion of the Bloch eigenfunction and the germane dispersi…
We study the homogenization of a Schrödinger equation in a locally periodic medium. For the time and space scaling of semi-classical analysis we consider well-prepared initial data that are concentrated near a stationary point (with respect to both space and phase) of the energy, i.e. the Bloch cell eigenvalue. We show that there exists a localized solution which is asymptotically given as the product of a Bloch wave and of the solution of an homogenized Schrödinger equation with quadratic potential.
The paper studies homogenization problem for a non-autonomous parabolic equation with a large random rapidly oscillating potential in the case of one dimensional spatial variable. We show that if the potential is a statistically homogeneous rapidly oscillating function of both temporal and spatial variables then, under proper mixing assumptions, the limit equation is deterministic and the convergence in probability holds. To the contrary, for the potential having a microstructure only in one of these variables, the limit problem is stochastic and we only prove the convergence in law.
In this study, we establish an inclusive paradigm for the homogenization of scalar wave motion in periodic media (with or without the source term) at finite frequencies and wavelengths spanning the first Brioullin zone. We take the eigenvalue problem for the unit cell of periodicity as a point of departure, and we consider the projection of germane Bloch wave function onto a suitable eigenfunction as descriptor of effective wave motion. For generality the finite wavenumber, finite frequency (FW-FF) homogenization is pursued in~$\mathbb{R}^d$ via second-order asymptotic expansion about the apex…
We study the homogenization of a stochastic Schrödinger equation with a large periodic potential in solid state physics. Denoting by $\varepsilon$ the period, the potential is scaled as $\varepsilon^{-2}$. Under a generic assumption on the spectral properties of the associated cell problem, we prove that the solution can be approximately factorized as the product of a fast oscillating cell eigenfunction and of a slowly varying solution of an effective equation. Our method is based on two-scale convergence and Bloch waves theory.
We analyse the spectral convergence of high order elliptic differential operators subject to singular domain perturbations and homogeneous boundary conditions of intermediate type. We identify sharp assumptions on the domain perturbations improving, in the case of polyharmonic operators of higher order, conditions known to be sharp in the case of fourth order operators. The optimality is proved by analysing in detail a boundary homogenization problem, which provides a smooth version of a polyharmonic Babuška paradox.
We study one-dimensional scattering for a decaying potential with rapid periodic oscillations and strong localized singularities. In particular, we consider the Schrödinger equation \[ H_εψ:= (-\partial_x^2 + V_0(x) + q(x,x/ε)) ψ= k^2 ψ, \] for $k\in\RR$ and $ε<< 1$. Here, $q(.,y+1)=q(.,y)$, has mean zero and $|V_0(x)+q(x,.)|$ goes to zero as $|x|$ goes to infinity. The distorted plane waves of $H_ε$ are solutions of the form: $e^{\pm ikx}+u^s_\pm(x;k)$, $u^s_\pm$ outgoing as $|x|$ goes to infinity. We derive their $ε$ small asymptotic behavior, from which the asymptotic behavior of scattering…
We consider homogenization of the scalar wave equation in periodic media at finite wavenumbers and frequencies, with the focus on continua characterized by: (a) arbitrary Bravais lattice in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\!\geqslant\!2$, and (b) exclusions i.e. "voids" that are subject to homogenous (Neumann or Dirichlet) boundary conditions. Making use of the Bloch wave expansion, we pursue this goal via asymptotic ansatz featuring the "spectral distance" from a given wavenumber-eigenfrequency pair (within the first Brillouin zone) as the perturbation parameter. We then introduce the effective wave motion…
We study singular perturbations of a class of two-scale stochastic control systems with unbounded data. The assumptions are designed to cover some relaxation problems for deep neural networks. We construct effective Hamiltonian and initial data and prove the convergence of the value function to the solution of a limit (effective) Cauchy problem for a parabolic equation of HJB type. We use methods of probability, viscosity solutions and homogenization.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic description of high-frequency waves in locally periodic media. A key issue is that the Bloch-dispersion curves vary with the local microstructure, giving rise to hidden singularities associated with band-gap edges and branch crossings. We describe an asymptotic approach for overcoming this difficulty, and take a first step by studying in detail the simplest case of 1D Helmholtz waves. The method entails matching adiabatically propagating Bloch waves, captured by a multiple-scale Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation, with complementary multip…
We study waves governed by the planar Helmholtz equation, propagating in an infinite lattice of subwavelength Dirichlet scatterers, the periodicity being comparable to the wavelength. Applying the method of matched asymptotic expansions, the scatterers are effectively replaced by asymptotic point constraints. The resulting coarse-grained Bloch-wave dispersion problem is solved by a generalised Fourier series, whose singular asymptotics in the vicinities of scatterers yield the dispersion relation governing modes that are strongly perturbed from plane-wave solutions existing in the absence of t…
Recently, a theory for artificial magnetism in two-dimensional photonic crystals has been developed for large wavelength using homogenization techniques. In this paper we pursue this approach within a rigorous stochastic framework: dielectric parallel nanorods are randomly disposed, each of them having, up to a large scaling factor, a random permittivity ε(ω) whose law is represented by a density on a window Δ=[a,b]x[0,h] of the complex plane. We give precise conditions on the initial probability law (permittivity, radius and position of the rods) under which the homogenization process can be …
