Bloch wave homogenization is a spectral method for obtaining effective coefficients for periodically heterogeneous media. This method hinges on the direct integral decomposition of periodic operators, which is not available in a suitable form for almost periodic operators. In particular, the notion of Bloch eigenvalues and eigenvectors does not exist for almost periodic operators. However, we are able to recover the homogenization result in this case, by employing a sequence of periodic approximations to almost periodic operators. We also establish a rate of convergence for approximations of homogenized tensors for a class of almost periodic media. The results are supported by a numerical study.
We study Bloch wave homogenization of periodically heterogeneous media with fourth order singular perturbations. We recover different homogenization regimes depending on the relative strength of the singular perturbation and length scale of the periodic heterogeneity. The homogenized tensor is obtained in terms of the first Bloch eigenvalue. The higher Bloch modes do not contribute to the homogenization limit.
In this work, we study the aspect of Bloch wave homogenization of the new notion of convergence of microstructures represented by matrices $B^ε$ related to the classical $H$-convergence of $A^ε$ introduced in \cite{TG-MV-1}. The new macro quantity $B^{#}$ appears to incorporate the interaction between the two microstructures $A^ε,B^ε$. Here we present its Bloch spectral representation along with the homogenization result.
In this work, we study the Bloch wave homogenization for the Stokes system with periodic viscosity coefficient. In particular, we obtain the spectral interpretation of the homogenized tensor. The presence of the incompressibility constraint in the model raises new issues linking the homogenized tensor and the Bloch spectral data. The main difficulty is a lack of smoothness for the bottom of the Bloch spectrum, a phenomenon which is not present in the case of the elasticity system. This issue is solved in the present work, completing the homogenization process of the Stokes system via the Bloch…
Quasiperiodic media is a class of almost periodic media which is generated from periodic media through a "cut and project" procedure. Bloch waves are typically defined through a direct integral decomposition of periodic operators. A suitable direct integral decomposition is not available for almost periodic operators. To remedy this, we lift an almost periodic operator to a degenerate periodic operator in higher dimensions. Approximate Bloch waves are obtained for a regularized version of the degenerate equation. Homogenized coefficients for quasiperiodic media are determined in terms of the f…
We consider the spectrum of a second-order elliptic operator in divergence form with periodic coefficients, which is known to be completely described by Bloch eigenvalues. We show that under small perturbations of the coefficients, a multiple Bloch eigenvalue can be made simple. The Bloch wave method of homogenization relies on the regularity of spectral edge. The spectral tools that we develop, allow us to obtain simplicity of an internal spectral edge through perturbation of the coefficients. As a consequence, we are able to establish Bloch wave homogenization at an internal edge in the pres…
We investigate second order linear wave equations in periodic media, aiming at the derivation of effective equations in $\R^n$, $n \in \{1, 2, 3\}$. Standard homogenization theory provides, for the limit of a small periodicity length $\eps>0$, an effective second order wave equation that describes solutions on time intervals $[0,T]$. In order to approximate solutions on large time intervals $[0,T\eps^{-2}]$, one has to use a dispersive, higher order wave equation. In this work, we provide a well-posed, weakly dispersive effective equation, and an estimate for errors between the solution of the…
In this paper, we use spectral methods by introducing the Bloch waves to study the homogenization process in the non-periodic class of generalized Hashin-Shtrikman micro-structures \cite[page no. 281]{T}, which incorporates both translation and dilation with a family of scales, including one subclass of laminates. We establish the classical homogenization result with providing the spectral representation of the homogenized coefficients. It offers a new lead towards extending the Bloch spectral analysis in the non-periodic, non-commutative class of micro-structures.
The asymptotic behavior of a one-dimensional spectral problem with periodic coefficient is addressed for high frequency modes by a method of Bloch wave homogenization. The analysis leads to a spectral problem including both microscopic and macroscopic eigenmodes. Numerical simulation results are provided to corroborate the theory.
This article examines a linear-quadratic elliptic optimal control problem in which the cost functional and the state equation involve a highly oscillatory periodic coefficient $A^\varepsilon$. The small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ denotes the periodicity length. We propose a high-order effective control problem with constant coefficients that provides an approximation of the original one with error $O(\varepsilon^M)$, where $M\in\mathbb{N}$ is as large as one likes. Our analysis relies on a Bloch wave expansion of the optimal solution and is performed in two steps. In the first step, we expand t…
In [H. Ammari et al., Honeycomb-lattice Minnaert bubbles. arXiv:1811.03905], the existence of a Dirac dispersion cone in a bubbly honeycomb phononic crystal is shown. The aim of this paper is to prove that, near the Dirac points, the Bloch eigenfunctions is the sum of two eigenmodes. Each eigenmode can be decomposed into two components: one which is slowly varying and satisfies a homogenized equation, while the other is periodic across each elementary crystal cell and is highly oscillating. The slowly oscillating components of the eigenmodes satisfy a system of Dirac equations. Our results in …
This paper is concerned with homogenization of systems of linear elasticity with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish sharp convergence rates in $L^2$ for the mixed boundary value problems with bounded measurable coefficients.
Consider an elliptic operator in divergence form with symmetric coefficients. If the diffusion coefficients are periodic, the Bloch theorem allows one to diagonalize the elliptic operator, which is key to the spectral properties of the elliptic operator and the usual starting point for the study of its long-time homogenization. When the coefficients are not periodic (say, quasi-periodic, almost periodic, or random with decaying correlations at infinity), the Bloch theorem does not hold and both the spectral properties and the long-time behavior of the associatedoperator are unclear. At low freque…
We study homogenization for a class of stationnary Hamilton-Jacobi equations in which the Hamiltonian is obtained by perturbing near the origin an otherwise periodic Hamiltonian. We prove that the limiting problem consists of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation outside the origin, with the same effective Hamiltonian as in periodic homogenization, supplemented at the origin with an effective Dirichlet condition that keeps track of the perturbation. Various comments and extensions are discussed.
We prove homogenization for reaction-advection-diffusion equations with KPP reactions, in the time-periodic spatially stationary ergodic setting, and find an explicit formula for the homogenized dynamic. We also extend this result to models with non-local diffusion and KPP reactions.
This paper is devoted to the homogenization of Shrödinger type equations with periodically oscillating coefficients of the diffusion term, and a rapidly oscillating periodic time-dependent potential. One convergence theorem is proved and we derive the macroscopic homogenized model. Our approach is the well known two-scale convergence method.
The quasi-periodic homogenization for some classes of first-order Hamilton-Jaconi-Bellman equation is studied in this paper. The cell problem of the quasi-periodic homogenization satisfies the non-resonance condition, under which the corresponding deterministic system is ergodic. The almost periodic homogenization for the same classes of equations is also solved, as a limit of a sequence of quasi-periodic homogenizations. Here, the almost periodicity is in the sense of H. Bohr. This result has been cited by some authors, for example: by H. Ishii, "Almost periodic homogenization of Hamilton-Jac…
We prove that the effective nonlinearities (ergodic constants) obtained in the stochastic homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi, "viscous" Hamilton-Jacobi and nonlinear uniformly elliptic pde are approximated by the analogous quantities of appropriate "periodizations" of the equations. We also obtain an error estimate, when there is a rate of convergence for the stochastic homogenization.
In this paper, we consider the homogenization of the p--Laplace equation with a periodic coefficient that is perturbed by a local defect. This setting has been introduced in [6, 7] in the linear setting p = 2. We construct the correctors and we derive convergence results to the homogenized solution in the case p > 2 under the assumption that the periodic correctors are non degenerate.
For a family of second-order parabolic systems with bounded measurable, rapidly oscillating and time-dependent periodic coefficients, we investigate the sharp convergence rates of weak solutions in $L^2$. Both initial-Dirichlet and initial-Neumann problems are studied.
The paper is mainly concerned with an approximate three-ball inequality for solutions in elliptic periodic homogenization. We consider a family of second order operators $\mathcal{L}_ε$ in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. It is the first time such an approximate three-ball inequality for homogenization theory is obtained. It implies an approximate quantitative propagation of smallness. The proof relies on a representation of the solution by the Poisson kernel and the Lagrange interpolation technique. Another full propagation of smallness result is also shown.
The paper deals with the existence and almost periodic homogenization of some model of generalized Navier-Stokes equations. We first establish an existence result for non-stationary Ladyzhenskaya equations with a given non constant density. The external force depends nonlinearly on the velocity. Next, to proceed with homogenization, as the density of the fluid is non constant, we combine the sigma-convergence method with some compactness arguments.
We prove quantitative estimates on the rate of convergence for the oscillating Dirichlet problem in periodic homogenization of divergence-form uniformly elliptic systems. The estimates are optimal in dimensions larger than three and new in every dimension. We also prove a regularity estimate on the homogenized boundary condition.
We consider an homogenization problem for the second order elliptic equation $- Δu^{\varepsilon} + \dfrac{1}{\varepsilon} V(./\varepsilon) u^{\varepsilon} + νu^{\varepsilon} =f$ when the highly oscillatory potential $V$ belongs to a particular class of non-periodic potentials. We show the existence of an adapted corrector and prove the convergence of $u^{\varepsilon}$ to its homogenized limit.
In this article, we study homogenization of a parabolic linear problem governed by a coefficient matrix with rapid spatial and temporal oscillations in periodically perforated domains with homogeneous Neumann data on the boundary of the holes. We prove results adapted to the problem for a characterization of multiscale limits for gradients and very weak multiscale convergence.
This paper is concerned with space-time homogenization problems for damped wave equations with spatially periodic oscillating elliptic coefficients and temporally (arithmetic) quasi-periodic oscillating viscosity coefficients. Main results consist of a homogenization theorem, qualitative properties of homogenized matrices which appear in homogenized equations and a corrector result for gradients of solutions. In particular, homogenized equations and cell problems will turn out to deeply depend on the quasi-periodicity as well as the log ratio of spatial and temporal periods of the coefficients…
This paper is concerned with periodic homogenization of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with oscillating Dirichlet data or Neumann data of first order. We prove that the homogenized boundary data belong to $W^{1, p}$ for any $1<p<\infty$. In particular, this implies that the boundary layer tails are Hölder continuous of order $α$ for any $α\in (0,1)$.
This paper is devoted to the study of uniform $W^{1,\frac{np}{n-p}}$- and $W^{2,p}$-estimates for viscosity solutions to fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic, periodic homogenization problems, up to boundaries, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. We characterize the size of "effective" Hessian and gradient of viscosity solutions to homogenization problems, and prove its uniform integrability without any regularity assumption on the governing functionals. Our estimates are new even for the standard problems. Our analysis applies to a large class of non-convex functionals.
In this paper, for a family of second-order parabolic equation with rapidly oscillating and time-dependent periodic coefficients, we are interested in an approximate two-sphere one-cylinder inequality for these solutions in parabolic periodic homogenization, which implies an approximate quantitative propagation of smallness. The proof relies on the asymptotic behavior of fundamental solutions and the Lagrange interpolation technique.
In this paper, we study the rate of convergence in periodic homogenization of scalar ordinary differential equations. We provide a quantitative error estimate between the solutions of a first-order ordinary differential equation with rapidly oscillating coefficients and the limiting homogenized solution. As an application of our result, we obtain an error estimate for the solution of some particular linear transport equations.
For a family of elliptic operators with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we study the convergence rates for Dirichlet eigenvalues and bounds of the normal derivatives of Dirichlet eigenfunctions. The results rely on an $O(ε)$ estimate in $H^1$ for solutions with Dirichlet condition.
This paper is concerned with the high-frequency homogenization of bubbly phononic crystals. It is a follow-up of the works [H. Ammari et al., Sub-wavelength phononic bandgap opening in bubbly media, J. Diff. Eq., 263 (2017), 5610--5629] which shows the existence of a sub-wavelength band gap. This phenomena can be explained by the periodic inference of cell resonance which is due to the high contrast in both the density and bulk modulus between the bubbles and the surrounding medium. In this paper, we prove that the first Bloch eigenvalue achieves its maximum at the corner of the Brillouin zone…
In this paper we provide a rate of convergence for periodic homogenization of Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations with nonlocal diffusion. The result is based on the regularity of the associated effective problem, where the convexity plays a crucial role. Such regularity estimates are possible from the available literature once we provide a representation formula for the effective Hamiltonian, a result that has an independent interest.
We consider high frequency homogenization in periodic media for travelling waves of several different equations: the wave equation for scalar-valued waves such as acoustics; the wave equation for vector-valued waves such as electromagnetism and elasticity; and a system that encompasses the Schr{ö}dinger equation. This homogenization applies when the wavelength is of the order of the size of the medium periodicity cell. The travelling wave is assumed to be the sum of two waves: a modulated Bloch carrier wave having crystal wave vector $\Bk$ and frequency $ω_1$ plus a modulated Bloch carrier wav…
We consider a homogenization problem for the diffusion equation $-\operatorname{div}\left(a_{\varepsilon} \nabla u_{\varepsilon} \right) = f$ when the coefficient $a_{\varepsilon}$ is a non-local perturbation of a periodic coefficient. The perturbation does not vanish but becomes rare at infinity in a sense made precise in the text. We prove the existence of a corrector, identify the homogenized limit and study the convergence rates of $u_{\varepsilon}$ to its homogenized limit.
For a homogenization problem associated to a linear elliptic operator, we prove the existence of a distributional corrector and we find an approximation scheme for the homogenized coefficients. We also study the convergence rates in the asymptotic almost periodic setting, and we show that the rates of convergence for the zero order approximation, are near optimal. The results obtained constitute a step towards the numerical implementation of results from the deterministic homogenization theory beyond the periodic setting. To illustrate this, numerical simulations based on finite volume method …
Many biological and engineering materials have nonperiodic microstructures for which classical periodic homogenization results do not apply. Certain nonperiodic microstructures may be approximated by locally periodic microstructures for which homogenization techniques are available. Motivated by the consideration that such materials are often anisotropic and can posses residual stresses, a broad class of locally periodic microstructures is considered and the resulting effective macroscopic equations are derived. The effective residual stress and effective elasticity tensor are determined by so…
We look at the effective Hamiltonian $\bar H$ associated with the Hamiltonian $H(p,x)=H(p)+V(x)$ in the periodic homogenization theory. Our central goal is to understand the relation between $V$ and $\bar H$. We formulate some inverse problems concerning this relation. Such type of inverse problems are in general very challenging. In the paper, we discuss several special cases in both convex and nonconvex settings.
This paper deals with the homogenization of a mixed boundary value problem for the Laplace operator in a domain with locally periodic oscillating boundary. The Neumann condition is prescribed on the oscillating part of the boundary, and the Dirichlet condition on a separate part. It is shown that the homogenization result holds in the sense of weak $L^2$ convergence of the solutions and their flows, under natural hypothesis on the regularity of the domain. The strong $L^2$ convergence of average preserving extensions of the solutions and their flows is also considered.
We consider a Hamilton-Jacobi equation where the Hamiltonian is periodic in space and coercive and convex in momentum. Combining the representation formula from optimal control theory and a theorem of Alexander, originally proved in the context of first-passage percolation, we find a rate of homogenization which is within a log-factor of optimal and holds in all dimensions.
We consider the homogenization of the Hele-Shaw problem in periodic media that are inhomogeneous both in space and time. After extending the theory of viscosity solutions into this context, we show that the solutions of the inhomogeneous problem converge in the homogenization limit to the solution of a homogeneous Hele-Shaw-type problem with a general, possibly nonlinear dependence of the free boundary velocity on the gradient. Moreover, the free boundaries converge locally uniformly in Hausdorff distance.
In the present paper, we generalize the theory of quantitative homogenization for second-order elliptic systems with rapidly oscillating coefficients in $APW^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, which is the space of almost-periodic functions in the sense of H. Weyl. We obtain the large scale uniform boundary Lipschitz estimate, for both Dirichlet and Neumann problems in $C^{1,α}$ domains. We also obtain large scale uniform boundary Hölder estimates in $C^{1,α}$ domains and $L^2$ Rellich estimates in Lipschitz domains.
We study in this paper the periodic homogenization problem related to a strongly nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation. Owing to the large reaction term, the homogenized equation has a rather quite different form which puts together both the reaction and convection effects. We show in a special case that, the homogenized equation is exactly of a convection-diffusion type. The study relies on a suitable version of the well-known two-scale convergence method.
In this paper the author studies the problem of the homogenization of a diffusion perturbed by a periodic reflection invariant vector field. The vector field is assumed to have fixed direction but varying amplitude. The existence of a homogenized limit is proven and formulas for the effective diffusion constant are given. In dimension $d=1$ the effective diffusion constant is always less than the constant for the pure diffusion. In $d>1$ this property no longer holds in general.
We consider an elliptic differential operator $A_\varepsilon = - \frac{d}{dx} g(x/\varepsilon) \frac{d}{dx} + \varepsilon^{-2} V(x/\varepsilon)$, $\varepsilon > 0$, with periodic coefficients acting in $L_2(\mathbb{R})$. For the nonstationary Schrödinger equation with the Hamiltonian $A_\varepsilon$ and for the hyperbolic equation with the operator $A_\varepsilon$, analogs of homogenization problems, related to the edges of the spectral bands of the operator $A_\varepsilon$, are studied (the so called high-frequency homogenization). For the solutions of the Cauchy problems for these equations …
In this paper, for a family of second-order elliptic equations with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we are interested in a Carleman-type inequality for these solutions satisfying an additional growth condition in elliptic periodic homogenization, which implies a three-ball inequality without an error term at a macroscopic scale. Moreover, if we replace the additional growth condition by the doubling condition at a macroscopic scale, then the three-ball inequality without an error term holds at any scale. The proof relies on the convergence of $H^1$-norm for the solution and the comp…
In this paper we study the quantitative homogenization of second-order parabolic systems with locally periodic (in both space and time) coefficients. The $O(\varepsilon)$ scale-invariant error estimate in $L^2(0, T; L^{\frac{2d}{d-1}}(Ω))$ is established in $C^{1, 1}$ cylinders under minimum smoothness conditions on the coefficients. This process relies on critical estimates of smoothing operators. We also develop a new construction of flux correctors in the parabolic manner and a sharp estimate for temporal boundary layers.
We propose continuum percolation theory to study homogenization problems of elliptic equations. Our aim is to improve and extend similar results that have been obtained for periodic domains using modeling for non-periodic domains with certain ergodic properties.
For a family of second-order elliptic systems in divergence form with rapidly oscillating almost-periodic coefficients, we obtain estimates for approximate correctors in terms of a function that quantifies the almost periodicity of the coefficients. The results are used to investigate the problem of convergence rates. We also establish uniform Hölder estimates for the Dirichlet problem in a bounded $C^{1, α}$ domain.
This paper deals with the periodic homogenization of nonlocal parabolic Hamilton-Jacobi equations with superlinear growth in the gradient terms. We show that the problem presents different features depending on the order of the nonlocal operator, giving rise to three different limit problems. To prove the locally uniform convergence to the unique solution of the Cauchy problem for the effective equation we need a new comparison principle among viscosity semi-solutions of integro-differential equations that can be of independent interest.
For a family of elliptic operators with periodically oscillating coefficients, $-\text{div}( A(\cdot/\varepsilon) \nabla) $ with tiny $\varepsilon>0$, we comprehensively study the first-order expansions of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions (eigenspaces) for both Dirichlet and Neumann problems in bounded, smooth and strictly convex domains (or more general domains of finite type). A new first-order correction term is introduced to derive the expansion of eigenfunctions in $L^2$ or $H^1_{\text{loc}}$. Our results rely on the recent progress on the homogenization of boundary layer problems.
We study the rate of convergence in periodic homogenization for convex Hamilton--Jacobi equations with multiscales, where the Hamiltonian $H=H(x, y, p): \mathbb{R}^n \times \mathbb{T}^n \times \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R }$ depends on both of the spatial variable and the oscillatory variable. In particular, we show that for the Cauchy problem, the rate of convergence is $O(\sqrtε)$ by optimal control formulas, scale separations and curve cutting techniques. We also show the rate $O(\sqrtε)$ of homogenization for the static problem based on the same idea. Additionally, we provide examples that i…
