We propose two different proofs of the fact that Oseen's vortex is the unique solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with a Dirac mass as initial vorticity. The first argument, due to C.E. Wayne and the second author, is based on an entropy estimate for the vorticity equation in self-similar variables. The second proof is new and relies on symmetrization techniques for parabolic equations.
We study well-posedness of a velocity-vorticity formulation of the Navier--Stokes equations, supplemented with no-slip velocity boundary conditions, a no-penetration vorticity boundary condition, along with a natural vorticity boundary condition depending on a pressure functional. In the stationary case we prove existence and uniqueness of a suitable weak solution to the system under a small data condition. The topic of the paper is driven by recent developments of vorticity based numerical methods for the Navier--Stokes equations.
In this article we derive Biot-Savar law for exterior 2D domain. No-slip condition in terms of vorticity is expressed in integral form. For non-stationary fluid dynamics equations no-slip condition generates affine invariant manifold and no-slip integral relations on vorticity can be transferred to Robin-type boundary condition.
We show that any solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation whose vorticity distribution is uniformly bounded in $L^1(R^2)$ for positive times is entirely determined by the trace of the vorticity at $t = 0$, which is a finite measure. When combined with previous existence results by Cottet, by Giga, Miyakawa, and Osada, and by Kato, this uniqueness property implies that the Cauchy problem for the vorticity equation in $R^2$ is globally well-posed in the space of finite measures. In particular, this provides an example of a situation where the Navier-Stokes equation is well-posed fo…
Bounding curves in the energy,enstrophy-plane are derived for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations under an assumption on coherence of the vorticity direction. The analysis in the critical case where the direction is Hölder continuous with exponent $r=1/2$ results in a curve with extraordinarily large maximal enstrophy (exponential in Grashof), in marked contrast to the subcritical case, $r>1/2$ (algebraic in Grashof).
Both experimental and numerical studies of fluid motion indicate that initially localized regions of vorticity tend to evolve into isolated vortices and that these vortices then serve as organizing centers for the flow. In this paper we prove that in two dimensions localized regions of vorticity do evolve toward a vortex. More precisely we prove that any solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation whose initial vorticity distribution is integrable converges to an explicit self-similar solution called ``Oseen's vortex''. This implies that the Oseen vortices are dynamically stable for…
Fractional Navier-Stokes equations -- featuring a fractional Laplacian -- provide a `bridge' between the Euler equations (zero diffusion) and the Navier-Stokes equations (full diffusion). The problem of whether an initially smooth flow can spontaneously develop a singularity is a fundamental problem in mathematical physics, open for the full range of models -- from Euler to Navier-Stokes. The purpose of this work is to present a hybrid, geometric-analytic regularity criterion for solutions to the 3D fractional Navier-Stokes equations expressed as a balance -- in the average sense -- between th…
In this paper, we continue the discussion as done in \cite{CTZ15} on turbulent channel flow described by the Navier-Stokes model and the Navier-Stokes-alpha model. We study the non-stationary solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes-$α$ model having particular function forms. In particular, the term of sum of pressure and potential can be shown to be harmonic in the space variable.
In a series of papers (see \cite{CDT02} and the pertinent references therein) the 3D Navier-Stokes-$α$ model were shown to be a useful complement to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations; and in particular, to be a good Reynolds version of the latter equations. In this work, we introduce a simple Reynolds averaging which, due to the wall roughness, transforms the Navier-Stokes equations into the Navier-Stokes-$α$ model.
The aim of this paper is to solve the three dimensional Navier-Stokes problem with conservative source term. We use convolution methods to construct "well behaved" smooth solutions of the initial boundary value problem for the system of Navier-Stokes with conservative source term.
We estimate the inertial force field in the 3d Euler/Navier-Stokes equation in function of |u|_\infty and |\nabla u |_\infty and provide an application to the well-posed problem
With the previous results for the analytical blowup solutions of the N-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations, we extend the similar structure to construct an analytical family of solutions for the isothermal Navier-Stokes equations and pressureless Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity.
We prove some criteria for the convergence of weak solutions of the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier slip boundary conditions to a strong solution of incompressible Euler. The slip rate depends on a power of the Reynolds number, and it is increasingly apparent that the power 1 may be critical for L^2 convergence, as hinted at in [hal-01093331].
In this paper we consider the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in an infinite channel. We provide a sufficient condition, in terms of $\partial_z p$, where $p$ is the pressure, for the global existence of the strong solutions to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations.
We investigate the long-term dynamics of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Voight model of viscoelastic incompressible fluid. Specifically, we derive upper bounds for the number of determining modes for the 3D Navier-Stokes-Voight equations and for the dimension of a global attractor of a semigroup generated by these equations. Viewed from the numerical analysis point of view we consider the Navier-Stokes-Voight model as a non-viscous (inviscid) regularization of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. Furthermore, we also show that the weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes-Voight equat…
We study spatial analyticity properties of solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations and obtain new growth rate estimates for the analyticity radius. We also study stability properties of strong global solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations with data in H^r, r greater or equal 1/2, and prove a stability result for the analyticity radius.
In this paper we establish a Serrin type regularity criterion on the gradient of pressure in weak spaces for the Leray-Hopf weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in R3.

We study the 4-dimensional pressureless Navier--Stokes-Poisson equations with density-dependent viscosity. The analytical solutions with arbitrary time blowup, in radial symmetry, are constructed in this paper.
The velocity-vorticity formulation of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations was recently found to give excellent numerical results for flows with strong rotation. In this work, we propose a new regularization of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, which we call the 3D velocity-vorticity-Voigt (VVV) model, with a Voigt regularization term added to momentum equation in velocity-vorticity form, but with no regularizing term in the vorticity equation. We prove global well-posedness and regularity of this model under periodic boundary conditions. We prove convergence of the model's velocity and vorticity to t…
In these notes we consider solutions u to the evolution three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space. Set w= curl u, the vorticity of u. Our study concerns mainly the relation between Holdercontinuity assumptions on the direction of the vorticity and induced space-time integrability regularity results for w. We discuss some related open problems, consistent with our calculations. We hope that our approach should help readers interesting in carrying on the investigation.
We obtain a pointwise, a priori bound for the vorticity of axis symmetric solutions to the 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The bound is in the form of a reciprocal of a power of the distance to the axis of symmetry. This seems to be the first general pointwise estimate established for the axis symmetric Navier-Stokes equations.
We deal with the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, in two and three dimensions, when some vortex patches are prescribed as initial data i.e. when there is an internal boundary across which the vorticity is discontinuous. We show -thanks to an asymptotic expansion- that there is a sharp but smooth variation of the fluid vorticity into a internal layer moving with the flow of the Euler equations; as long as this later exists and as t * nu is small, where nu is the viscosity coefficient.
We develop a new approach for regularity estimates, especially vorticity estimates, of solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with periodic initial data, by exploiting carefully formulated linearized vorticity equations. An appealing feature of the linearized vorticity equations is the inheritance of the divergence-free property of solutions, so that it can intrinsically be employed to construct and estimate solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. New regularity estimates of strong solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are obtained by deriving new exp…
In this paper, we study the inviscid limit of the free surface incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with or without surface tension. By delicate estimates, we prove the weak boundary layer of the velocity of the free surface Navier-Stokes equations and the existence of strong or weak vorticity layer for different conditions. When the limit of the difference between the initial Navier-Stokes vorticity and the initial Euler vorticity is nonzero, or the tangential projection on the free surface of the Euler strain tensor multiplying by normal vector is nonzero, there exists a strong vorticity l…
We consider a family of Stokes waves on vorticity flow parameterized by a parameter. For large value of the parameter the Stokes waves approach the Stokes extreme wave. We prove that there are infinitely many subharmonic bifurcation points on such branches.
We will consider the Navier-Stokes equation on a Riemannian manifold M with Ricci tensor bounded below, the involved Laplacian operator is De Rham-Hodge Laplacian. The novelty of this work is to introduce a family of connections which are related to solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation, so that vorticity and helicity can be linked through the associated time-dependent Ricci tensor in intrinsic way in the case where dim(M) = 3. This paper concerns the 3-dimensional Lagrangian Navier-Stokes $α$ model and the limiting Navier-Stokes system on smooth bounded domains with a class of vorticity-slip boundary conditions and the Navier-slip boundary conditions. It establishes the spectrum properties and regularity estimates of the associated Stokes operators, the local well-posedness of the strong solution and global existence of weak solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing $α$ limit to a weak solution of the corresponding initial-boundary value problem of the Navier-Stokes s…
We consider stochastic Navier-Stokes equations in a 2D-bounded domain with the Navier with friction boundary condition. We establish the existence and the uniqueness of the solutions and study the vanishing viscosity limit. More precisely, we prove that solutions of stochastic Navier-Stokes equations converge, as the viscosity goes to zero, to solutions of the corresponding stochastic Euler equations.
We consider a stochastic interacting particle system in a bounded domain with reflecting boundary, including creation of new particles on the boundary prescribed by a given source term. We show that such particle system approximates 2d Navier-Stokes equations in vorticity form and impermeable boundary, the creation of particles modeling vorticity creation at the boundary. Kernel smoothing, more specifically smoothing by means of the Neumann heat semigroup on the space domain, allows to establish uniform convergence of regularized empirical measures to (weak solutions of) Navier-Stokes equation…
In this paper, we will prove a regularity criterion that guarantees solutions of the Navier--Stokes equation must remain smooth so long as the the vorticity restricted to a plane remains bounded in the scale critical space $L^4_t L^2_x$, where the plane may vary in space and time as long as the gradient of the vector orthogonal to the plane remains bounded. This extends previous work by Chae and Choe that guaranteed that solutions of the Navier--Stokes equation must remain smooth as long as the vorticity restricted to a fixed plane remains bounded in family of scale critical mixed Lebesgue spa…
We construct finite-dimensional invariant manifolds in the phase space of the Navier-Stokes equation on R^2 and show that these manifolds control the long-time behavior of the solutions. This gives geometric insight into the existing results on the asymptotics of such solutions and also allows one to extend those results in a number of ways.
In this paper, we modified the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations by adding a l-Laplacian. We provide upper bounds on the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure the level sets of the vorticity of solutions. We express them in terms of the Kolmogorov length-scale and the Landau-Lifschitz estimates of the number of degrees of freedom in turbulent flow. We also, under certain hypothesis recover the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure estimates for the usual 3D Navier-Stokes equations with potential force. Moreover, we show that the estimates depend on l, this result suggests that the modified Nav…
We deal with a weak solution v to the Navier-Stokes initial value problem in R^3 x(0,T). We denote by ω^+ a spectral projection of ω=\curl\, v, defined by means of the spectral resolution of identity associated with the self-adjoint operator \curl. We show that certain conditions imposed on ω^+ or, alternatively, only on ω^+_3 (the third component of ω^+) imply regularity of solution v.
We use the vorticity formulation to study the long-time behavior of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation on R^3. We assume that the initial vorticity is small and decays algebraically at infinity. After introducing self-similar variables, we compute the long-time asymptotics of the rescaled vorticity equation up to second order. Each term in the asymptotics is a self-similar divergence-free vector field with Gaussian decay at infinity, and the coefficients in the expansion can be determined by solving a finite system of ordinary differential equations. As a consequence of our results, we ar…
This is a rather comprehensive study on the dynamics of Navier-Stokes and Euler equations via a combination of analysis and numerics. We focus upon two main aspects: (a). zero viscosity limit of the spectra of linear Navier-Stokes operator, (b). heteroclinics conjecture for Euler equation, its numerical verification, Melnikov integral, and simulation and control of chaos. Besides Navier-Stokes and Euler equations, we also study two models of them.
The main purpose of this work is to provide a Hilbertian functional framework for the analysis of the planar Navier-Stokes (NS) equations either in vorticity or in stream function formulation. The fluid is assumed to occupy a bounded possibly multiply connected domain. The velocity field satisfies either homogeneous (no-slip boundary conditions) or prescribed Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that the analysis of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations can be carried out in terms of the so-called nonprimitive variables only (vorticity field and stream function) without resorting to the classical …
We show that the Navier-Stokes as well as a random perturbation of this equation can be derived from a stochastic variational principle where the pressure is introduced as a Lagrange multiplier. Moreover we describe how to obtain corresponding constants of the motion.
In this paper, we rigorously derive the compressible one-fluid Navier-Stokes equation from the scaled compressible two-fluid Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations locally in time under the assumption that the initial data are well prepared. We justify the singular limit by proving the uniform decay of the error system, which is obtained by elaborate energy estimates.
The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ model for fast rotating geophysical fluids is considered. The Navier-Stokes-$α$ model is a nonlinear dispersive regularization of the exact Navier-Stokes equations obtained by Lagrangian averaging and tend to the Navier-Stokes equations as $α\rightarrow 0^+$. We estimate upper bounds for the dimensions of global attractors and study the dependence of the dimensions on the parameter $α$. All the estimates are uniform in $α$, and our estimate of attractor dimensions remain finite when $α\rightarrow 0^+$.
This paper is concerned with geometric regularity criteria for the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^3_{+}\times (0,T)$ with no-slip boundary condition, with the assumption that the solution satisfies the `ODE blow-up rate' Type I condition. More precisely, we prove that if the vorticity direction is uniformly continuous on subsets of $$\bigcup_{t\in(T-1,T)} \big(B(0,R)\cap\mathbb{R}^3_{+}\big)\times {\{t\}},\,\,\,\,\,\, R=O(\sqrt{T-t})$$ where the vorticity has large magnitude, then $(0,T)$ is a regular point. This result is inspired by and improves the regularity criteria given by Giga,…
We study Caccioppoli's inequalities of the non-stationary Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes equations. Our analysis is local near boundary and we prove that, in contrast to the interior case, the Caccioppoli's inequalities of the Stokes equations and the Navier-Stokes equations, in general, fail near boundary.
This paper studies two well-known models for two-phase fluid flow at constant temperature, the isothermal Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn and the isothermal Navier-Stokes-Cahn-Hilliard equations, both of which consist of equations for the (total) fluid density rho, the (mass-averaged)velocity u and the concentration (of one of the phases,) c. Assuming in either case that both phases are incompressible with different densities, each of the models is shown to reduce to a system of evolution equations in rho and u alone. In the case of the Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn model, this reduced system is the class…
An algebraic upper bound for the decay rate of solutions to the Navier-Stokes and Navier-Stokes-Coriolis equations in the critical space $\dot{H} ^{\frac{1}{2}} (\mathbb{R} ^3)$ is derived using the Fourier Splitting Method. Estimates are framed in terms of the decay character of initial data, leading to solutions with algebraic decay and showing in detail the roles played by the linear and nonlinear parts.
In this paper, we first prove the global well-posedness of a scaled anisotropic Navier-Stokes system and the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system in a 2-D striped domain with small analytic data in the tangential variable. Then we justify the limit from the anisotropic Navier-Stokes system to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes system with analytic data.
In this paper, we shall establish the global well-posedness, the space-time analyticity of the Navier-Stokes equations for a class of large periodic data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. This improves the classical result of Koch \& Tataru \cite{koch-tataru}, for the global well-posedness with small initial data $u_0 \in BMO^{-1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
