In these notes we consider solutions u to the evolution three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space. Set w= curl u, the vorticity of u. Our study concerns mainly the relation between Holdercontinuity assumptions on the direction of the vorticity and induced space-time integrability regularity results for w. We discuss some related open problems, consistent with our calculations. We hope that our approach should help readers interesting in carrying on the investigation.
Fractional Navier-Stokes equations -- featuring a fractional Laplacian -- provide a `bridge' between the Euler equations (zero diffusion) and the Navier-Stokes equations (full diffusion). The problem of whether an initially smooth flow can spontaneously develop a singularity is a fundamental problem in mathematical physics, open for the full range of models -- from Euler to Navier-Stokes. The purpose of this work is to present a hybrid, geometric-analytic regularity criterion for solutions to the 3D fractional Navier-Stokes equations expressed as a balance -- in the average sense -- between th…
Applying the DeGiorgi Method the Holder continuity of the swirl is proved for solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations from Lq(0,T;Lp) with 3/p+2/q < 1.
The velocity-vorticity formulation of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations was recently found to give excellent numerical results for flows with strong rotation. In this work, we propose a new regularization of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations, which we call the 3D velocity-vorticity-Voigt (VVV) model, with a Voigt regularization term added to momentum equation in velocity-vorticity form, but with no regularizing term in the vorticity equation. We prove global well-posedness and regularity of this model under periodic boundary conditions. We prove convergence of the model's velocity and vorticity to t…
We obtain a pointwise, a priori bound for the vorticity of axis symmetric solutions to the 3 dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The bound is in the form of a reciprocal of a power of the distance to the axis of symmetry. This seems to be the first general pointwise estimate established for the axis symmetric Navier-Stokes equations.
We deal with the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, in two and three dimensions, when some vortex patches are prescribed as initial data i.e. when there is an internal boundary across which the vorticity is discontinuous. We show -thanks to an asymptotic expansion- that there is a sharp but smooth variation of the fluid vorticity into a internal layer moving with the flow of the Euler equations; as long as this later exists and as t * nu is small, where nu is the viscosity coefficient.
In this paper, we study the inviscid limit of the free surface incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with or without surface tension. By delicate estimates, we prove the weak boundary layer of the velocity of the free surface Navier-Stokes equations and the existence of strong or weak vorticity layer for different conditions. When the limit of the difference between the initial Navier-Stokes vorticity and the initial Euler vorticity is nonzero, or the tangential projection on the free surface of the Euler strain tensor multiplying by normal vector is nonzero, there exists a strong vorticity l…
This paper concerns the 3-dimensional Lagrangian Navier-Stokes $α$ model and the limiting Navier-Stokes system on smooth bounded domains with a class of vorticity-slip boundary conditions and the Navier-slip boundary conditions. It establishes the spectrum properties and regularity estimates of the associated Stokes operators, the local well-posedness of the strong solution and global existence of weak solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing $α$ limit to a weak solution of the corresponding initial-boundary value problem of the Navier-Stokes s…
In this paper, we will prove a regularity criterion that guarantees solutions of the Navier--Stokes equation must remain smooth so long as the the vorticity restricted to a plane remains bounded in the scale critical space $L^4_t L^2_x$, where the plane may vary in space and time as long as the gradient of the vector orthogonal to the plane remains bounded. This extends previous work by Chae and Choe that guaranteed that solutions of the Navier--Stokes equation must remain smooth as long as the vorticity restricted to a fixed plane remains bounded in family of scale critical mixed Lebesgue spa…
We construct finite-dimensional invariant manifolds in the phase space of the Navier-Stokes equation on R^2 and show that these manifolds control the long-time behavior of the solutions. This gives geometric insight into the existing results on the asymptotics of such solutions and also allows one to extend those results in a number of ways.
We discuss the regularity of solutions of 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by singular forces. The problem is motivated by the study of complex fluids modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations coupled to a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation describing microscopic corpora embedded in the fluid. This leads naturally to bounded added stress and hence to $W^{-1,\infty}$ forcing of the Navier-Stokes equations.
In this paper, we modified the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations by adding a l-Laplacian. We provide upper bounds on the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure the level sets of the vorticity of solutions. We express them in terms of the Kolmogorov length-scale and the Landau-Lifschitz estimates of the number of degrees of freedom in turbulent flow. We also, under certain hypothesis recover the two-dimensional Hausdorff measure estimates for the usual 3D Navier-Stokes equations with potential force. Moreover, we show that the estimates depend on l, this result suggests that the modified Nav…
We deal with a weak solution v to the Navier-Stokes initial value problem in R^3 x(0,T). We denote by ω^+ a spectral projection of ω=\curl\, v, defined by means of the spectral resolution of identity associated with the self-adjoint operator \curl. We show that certain conditions imposed on ω^+ or, alternatively, only on ω^+_3 (the third component of ω^+) imply regularity of solution v.
We use the vorticity formulation to study the long-time behavior of solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation on R^3. We assume that the initial vorticity is small and decays algebraically at infinity. After introducing self-similar variables, we compute the long-time asymptotics of the rescaled vorticity equation up to second order. Each term in the asymptotics is a self-similar divergence-free vector field with Gaussian decay at infinity, and the coefficients in the expansion can be determined by solving a finite system of ordinary differential equations. As a consequence of our results, we ar…
We consider the hypodissipative Navier-Stokes equations on $[0,T]\times\mathbb{T}^{d}$ and seek to construct non-unique, Hölder-continuous solutions with epochs of regularity (smooth almost everywhere outside a small singular set in time), using convex integration techniques. In particular, we give quantitative relationships between the power of the fractional Laplacian, the dimension of the singular set, and the regularity of the solution. In addition, we also generalize the usual vector calculus arguments to higher dimensions with Lagrangian coordinates.
The main purpose of this work is to provide a Hilbertian functional framework for the analysis of the planar Navier-Stokes (NS) equations either in vorticity or in stream function formulation. The fluid is assumed to occupy a bounded possibly multiply connected domain. The velocity field satisfies either homogeneous (no-slip boundary conditions) or prescribed Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that the analysis of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations can be carried out in terms of the so-called nonprimitive variables only (vorticity field and stream function) without resorting to the classical …
We consider a family of initial problems for the Navier-Stokes type equations generated by the de Rham complex in ${\mathbb R}^n \times [0,T]$, $n\geq 2$, with a positive time $T$ over a scale weighted anisotropic Hölder spaces. As the weights control the order of zero at the infinity with respect to the space variables for vectors fields under the consideration, this actually leads to initial problems over a compact manifold with the singular conic point at the infinity. We prove that each problem from the family induces Fredholm open injective mappings on elements of the scales. At the step …
In our recent work dedicated to the Boussinesq equations [Danchin and Zhang 2016], we established the persistence of solutions with piecewise constant temperature along interfaces with Hölder regularity. We here address the same problem for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations satisfied by a viscous incompressibleand inhomogeneous fluid. We establish that, indeed, in the slightly inhomogeneous case, patches of densities with $\mathcal{C}^{1, \varepsilon}$ regularity propagate for all time. As in [Danchin and Zhang 2016], our result follows from the conservation of Hölder regularityalong v…
This paper is concerned with geometric regularity criteria for the Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^3_{+}\times (0,T)$ with no-slip boundary condition, with the assumption that the solution satisfies the `ODE blow-up rate' Type I condition. More precisely, we prove that if the vorticity direction is uniformly continuous on subsets of $$\bigcup_{t\in(T-1,T)} \big(B(0,R)\cap\mathbb{R}^3_{+}\big)\times {\{t\}},\,\,\,\,\,\, R=O(\sqrt{T-t})$$ where the vorticity has large magnitude, then $(0,T)$ is a regular point. This result is inspired by and improves the regularity criteria given by Giga,…
We show that the spatial $L^q$ ($q > 5/3$) norm of the vorticity of an incompressible viscous fluid in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or $\mathbb{T}^3$ remains bounded uniformly in time, provided that the direction of vorticity is Hölder continuous in the space variable, and that the space--time $L^q$ norm of the vorticity is finite. The Hölder index depends only on $q$. This serves as a variant of the classical result by P. Constantin and Ch. Fefferman (Direction of vorticity and the problem of global regularity for the Navier--Stokes equations, Indiana Univ. J. Math., 42 (1993), 775--789).
We will consider the Navier-Stokes equation on a Riemannian manifold M with Ricci tensor bounded below, the involved Laplacian operator is De Rham-Hodge Laplacian. The novelty of this work is to introduce a family of connections which are related to solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation, so that vorticity and helicity can be linked through the associated time-dependent Ricci tensor in intrinsic way in the case where dim(M) = 3. We consider a stochastic interacting particle system in a bounded domain with reflecting boundary, including creation of new particles on the boundary prescribed by a given source term. We show that such particle system approximates 2d Navier-Stokes equations in vorticity form and impermeable boundary, the creation of particles modeling vorticity creation at the boundary. Kernel smoothing, more specifically smoothing by means of the Neumann heat semigroup on the space domain, allows to establish uniform convergence of regularized empirical measures to (weak solutions of) Navier-Stokes equation…
We study well-posedness of a velocity-vorticity formulation of the Navier--Stokes equations, supplemented with no-slip velocity boundary conditions, a no-penetration vorticity boundary condition, along with a natural vorticity boundary condition depending on a pressure functional. In the stationary case we prove existence and uniqueness of a suitable weak solution to the system under a small data condition. The topic of the paper is driven by recent developments of vorticity based numerical methods for the Navier--Stokes equations.
In this paper, we derive sharp bounds on the semigroup of the linearized incompressible Navier-Stokes equations near a stationary shear layer in the half plane and in the half space ($\mathbb{R}_+^2$ or $\mathbb{R}_+^3$), with Dirichlet boundary conditions, assuming that this shear layer in spectrally unstable for Euler equations. In the inviscid limit, due to the prescribed no-slip boundary conditions, vorticity becomes unbounded near the boundary. The novelty of this paper is to introduce boundary layer norms that capture the unbounded vorticity and to derive sharp estimates on this vorticit…
We study the 2D Navier-Stokes equations linearized around the Couette flow $(y,0)^t$ in the periodic channel $\mathbb T \times [-1,1]$ with no-slip boundary conditions in the vanishing viscosity $ν\to 0$ limit. We split the vorticity evolution into the free evolution (without a boundary) and a boundary corrector that is exponentially localized to at most an $O(ν^{1/3})$ boundary layer. If the initial vorticity perturbation is supported away from the boundary, we show inviscid damping of both the velocity and the vorticity associated to the boundary layer. For example, our $L^2_t L^1_y$ estimat…
In this work we investigate some regularization properties of the incompressible Euler equations and of the fractional Navier-Stokes equations where the dissipative term is given by $(-Δ)^α$, for a suitable power $α\in (0,\frac{1}{2})$ (the only meaningful range for this result). Assuming that the solution $u \in L^\infty _t(C^θ_x)$ for some $θ\in (0,1)$ we prove that $u \in C^θ_{t,x}$, the pressure $p\in C^{2θ-}_{t,x}$ and the kinetic energy $e \in C^{\frac{2θ}{1-θ}}_t$. This result was obtained for the Euler equations in [Is13] with completely different arguments and we believe that our proo…
The aim of this work is to prove an existence and uniqueness result of Kato-Fujita type for the Navier-Stokes equations, in vorticity form, in $2-D$ and $3-D$, perturbed by a gradient type multiplicative Gaussian noise (for sufficiently small initial vorticity). These equations are considered in order to model hydrodynamic turbulence. The approach was motivated by a recent result by V. Barbu and the second named author in \cite{b1}, that treats the stochastic $3D$-Navier-Stokes equations, in vorticity form, perturbed by linear multiplicative Gaussian noise. More precisely, the equation is tran…
We study the second spatial derivatives of suitable weak solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in dimension three. We show that it is locally $L ^{\frac43, q}$ for any $q > \frac43$, which improves from the current result $L ^{\frac43, \infty}$. Similar improvements in Lorentz space are also obtained for higher derivatives of the vorticity for smooth solutions. We use a blow-up technique to obtain nonlinear bounds compatible with the scaling. The local study works on the vorticity equation and uses De Giorgi iteration. In this local study, we can obtain any regularity of the …
We establish a Liouville type result for a backward global solution to the Navier-Stokes equations in the half plane with the no-slip boundary condition. No assumptions on spatial decay for the vorticity nor the velocity field are imposed. We study the vorticity equations instead of the original Navier-Stokes equations. As an application, we extend the geometric regularity criterion for the Navier-Stokes equations in the three-dimensional half space under the no-slip boundary condition.
We show that the eigenvalues of the Stokes operator in a domain with a small hole converge to the eigenvalues of the Stokes operator in the whole domain, when the diameter of the hole tends to 0. The convergence of the eigenspaces and the convergence of the Stokes semigroup are also established. Concerning the Navier--Stokes equations, we prove that the vorticity of the solution in the perforated domain converges as the hole shrinks to a point $r$ to the vorticity of the solution in the punctured domain (i.e. the whole domain with the point $r$ removed). The main ingredients of the analysis ar…
In this article we derive Biot-Savar law for exterior 2D domain. No-slip condition in terms of vorticity is expressed in integral form. For non-stationary fluid dynamics equations no-slip condition generates affine invariant manifold and no-slip integral relations on vorticity can be transferred to Robin-type boundary condition.
We consider the zero viscosity limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with non-slip boundary condition in the half-space for the initial vorticity located away from the boundary. By using the vorticity formulation and Cauchy-Kowaleskaya theorem, Maekawa proved the local in time convergence of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half- plane to the Euler equations outside a boundary layer and to the Prandtl equations in the boundary layer. In this paper, we develop the direct energy method to generalize Maekawa's result to the half-space.
The Navier-Stokes equations and their various approximations can be described in terms of near identity maps, that are diffusive particle path transformations of physical space. The active velocity is obtained from the diffusive path transformation and a virtual velocity using the Weber formula. The active vorticity is obtained from the diffusive path transformation and a virtual vorticity using a Cauchy formula. The virtual velocity and the virtual vorticity obey diffusive equations, which reduce to passive advection formally, if the viscosity is zero. Apart from being proportional to the vis…
We propose two different proofs of the fact that Oseen's vortex is the unique solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation with a Dirac mass as initial vorticity. The first argument, due to C.E. Wayne and the second author, is based on an entropy estimate for the vorticity equation in self-similar variables. The second proof is new and relies on symmetrization techniques for parabolic equations.
We prove that the densities of the finite dimensional projections of weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations driven by Gaussian noise are bounded and Hölder continuous, thus improving the results of Debussche and Romito [DebRom2014]. The proof is based on analytical estimates on a conditioned Fokker-Planck equation solved by the density, that has a "non-local" term that takes into account the influence of the rest of the infinite dimensional dynamics over the finite subspace under observation.
We establish the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the whole plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ for initial data having vorticity as a superposition of point vortices and a regular component. In particular, this rigorously justifies the vortex-wave system from the physical Navier-Stokes flows in the vanishing viscosity limit, a model that was introduced by Marchioro and Pulvirenti in the early 90s to describe the dynamics of point vortices in a regular ambient vorticity background. The proof rests on the previous analysis of Gallay in his derivation of the vortex-point system.
We show that any solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation whose vorticity distribution is uniformly bounded in $L^1(R^2)$ for positive times is entirely determined by the trace of the vorticity at $t = 0$, which is a finite measure. When combined with previous existence results by Cottet, by Giga, Miyakawa, and Osada, and by Kato, this uniqueness property implies that the Cauchy problem for the vorticity equation in $R^2$ is globally well-posed in the space of finite measures. In particular, this provides an example of a situation where the Navier-Stokes equation is well-posed fo…
The paper is concerned with the vanishing viscosity limit of the two-dimensional degenerate viscous lake equations when the Navier slip conditions are prescribed on the impermeable boundary of a simply connected bounded regular domain. When the initial vorticity is in the Lebesgue space $L^q$ with $2<q\le\infty$, we show the degenerate viscous lake equations possess a unique global solution and the solution converges to a corresponding weak solution of the inviscid lake equations. In the special case when the vorticity is in $L^\infty$, an explicit convergence rate is obtained.
We consider a system of two incompressible fluids separated by a free interface. The first fluid is inviscid, governed by the Euler system, while the second fluid has positive viscosity and is governed by the Navier-Stokes system. We formulate a notion of splash-type self-intersection singularities, and show that this system cannot form such a singularity in finite time. The main obstacle in our analysis is to handle the effect of bulk vorticity induced by the Navier-Stokes flow. To the best of our knowledge this is the first result on preclusion of splash-type singularities in the presence of…
In this note, we investigate the 3D steady axially symmetric Navier-Stokes equations, and obtained Liouville type theorems if the velocity or the vorticity satisfies some a priori decay assumptions.
In this paper we give elementary proofs of energy conservation for weak solutions to the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in the class of Hölder continuous functions, relaxing some of the assumptions on the time variable (both integrability and regularity at initial time) and presenting them in a unified way. Then, in the final section we prove (for the Navier-Stokes equations) a result of energy conservation in presence of a solid boundary and with Dirichlet boundary conditions. This result seems the first one -- in the viscous case -- with Hölder type assumptions, but without additional ass…
In their classical work Caflisch and Sammartino proved the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for well-prepared data with analytic regularity in the half-space. Their proof is based on the detailed construction of Prandtl's boundary layer asymptotic expansions. In this paper, we give a direct proof of the inviscid limit for general analytic data without having to construct Prandtl's boundary layer correctors. Our analysis makes use of the boundary vorticity formulation and the abstract Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem on analytic boundary layer function spaces that capture…
Bounding curves in the energy,enstrophy-plane are derived for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations under an assumption on coherence of the vorticity direction. The analysis in the critical case where the direction is Hölder continuous with exponent $r=1/2$ results in a curve with extraordinarily large maximal enstrophy (exponential in Grashof), in marked contrast to the subcritical case, $r>1/2$ (algebraic in Grashof).
We present new interior regularity criteria for suitable weak solutions of the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations: a suitable weak solution is regular near an interior point $z$ if either the scaled $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$-norm of the velocity with $3/p+2/q\leq 2$, $1\leq q\leq \infty$, or the $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$-norm of the vorticity with $3/p+2/q\leq 3$, $1 \leq q < \infty$, or the $L^{p,q}_{x,t}$-norm of the gradient of the vorticity with $3/p+2/q\leq 4$, $1 \leq q$, $1 \leq p$, is sufficiently small near $z$.
We introduce a rough perturbation of the Navier-Stokes system and justify its physical relevance from balance of momentum and conservation of circulation in the inviscid limit. We present a framework for a well-posedness analysis of the system. In particular, we define an intrinsic notion of solution based on ideas from the rough path theory and study the system in an equivalent vorticity formulation. In two space dimensions, we prove that well-posedness and enstrophy balance holds. Moreover, we derive rough path continuity of the equation, which yields a Wong-Zakai result for Brownian driving…
The goal of this article is to present -- in a cohesive, and somewhat self-contained fashion -- several recent results revealing an experimentally, numerically, and mathematical analysis-supported \emph{geometric scenario} manifesting \emph{large data} logarithmic \emph{sub-criticality} of the 3D Navier-Stokes regularity problem. Shortly -- in this scenario -- the \emph{transversal small scales} produced by the mechanism of vortex stretching (coupled with the decay of the volume of the regions of intense vorticity) reach the threshold sufficient for the \emph{locally anisotropic diffusion} to …
