We introduce a rough perturbation of the Navier-Stokes system and justify its physical relevance from balance of momentum and conservation of circulation in the inviscid limit. We present a framework for a well-posedness analysis of the system. In particular, we define an intrinsic notion of solution based on ideas from the rough path theory and study the system in an equivalent vorticity formulation. In two space dimensions, we prove that well-posedness and enstrophy balance holds. Moreover, we derive rough path continuity of the equation, which yields a Wong-Zakai result for Brownian driving paths, and show that for a large class of driving signals, the system generates a continuous random dynamical system. In dimension three, the noise is not enstrophy balanced, and we establish the existence of local in time solutions.
We will consider the Navier-Stokes equation on a Riemannian manifold M with Ricci tensor bounded below, the involved Laplacian operator is De Rham-Hodge Laplacian. The novelty of this work is to introduce a family of connections which are related to solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation, so that vorticity and helicity can be linked through the associated time-dependent Ricci tensor in intrinsic way in the case where dim(M) = 3. We consider a stochastic interacting particle system in a bounded domain with reflecting boundary, including creation of new particles on the boundary prescribed by a given source term. We show that such particle system approximates 2d Navier-Stokes equations in vorticity form and impermeable boundary, the creation of particles modeling vorticity creation at the boundary. Kernel smoothing, more specifically smoothing by means of the Neumann heat semigroup on the space domain, allows to establish uniform convergence of regularized empirical measures to (weak solutions of) Navier-Stokes equation…
The paper is devoted to the open problem of regularization by noise of 3D Navier-Stokes equations. Opposite to several attempts made with additive noise which remained inconclusive, we show here that a suitable multiplicative noise of transport type has a regularizing effect. It is proven that stochastic transport noise provides a bound on vorticity which gives well posedness, with high probability. The result holds for sufficiently large noise intensity and sufficiently high spectrum of the noise.
We develop a new approach for regularity estimates, especially vorticity estimates, of solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with periodic initial data, by exploiting carefully formulated linearized vorticity equations. An appealing feature of the linearized vorticity equations is the inheritance of the divergence-free property of solutions, so that it can intrinsically be employed to construct and estimate solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. New regularity estimates of strong solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are obtained by deriving new exp…
We consider the Navier-Stokes system in two and three space dimensions perturbed by transport noise and subject to periodic boundary conditions. The noise arises from perturbing the advecting velocity field by space-time dependent noise that is smooth in space and rough in time. We study the system within the framework of rough path theory and, in particular, the recently developed theory of unbounded rough drivers. We introduce an intrinsic notion of a weak solution of the Navier-Stokes system, establish suitable a priori estimates and prove existence. In two dimensions, we prove that the sol…
We consider point vortex systems on the two dimensional torus perturbed by environmental noise. It is shown that, under a suitable scaling of the noises, weak limit points of the empirical measures are solutions to the vorticity formulation of deterministic 2D Navier-Stokes equations.
In this article we show that three dimensional vector advection equation is self dual in certain sense defined below. As a consequence, we infer classical result of Serrin of existence of strong solution of Navier-Stokes equation. Also we deduce Feynman-Kac type formula for solution of the vector advection equation and show that the formula is not unique i.e. there exist flows which differ from standard flow along which vorticity is conserved.
We consider the two dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in vorticity form with a stochastic forcing term given by a gaussian noise, white in time and coloured in space. First, we prove existence and uniqueness of a weak (in the Walsh sense) solution process $ξ$ and we show that, if the initial vorticity $ξ_0$ is continuous in space, then there exists a space-time continuous version of the solution. In addition we show that the solution $ξ(t,x)$ (evaluated at fixed points in time and space) is locally differentiable in the Malliavin calculus sense and that its image law is absolutely continuous…
We consider an interacting particle system modeled as a system of $N$ stochastic differential equations driven by Brownian motions. We prove that the (mollified) empirical process converges, uniformly in time and space variables, to the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation written in vorticity form. The proofs follow a semigroup approach.
We consider the Navier-Stokes equations in vorticity form in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with a white noise forcing term of multiplicative type, whose spatial covariance is not regular enough to apply the Itô calculus in $L^q$ spaces, $1<q<\infty$. We prove the existence of a unique strong (in the probability sense) solution.
We show that the system of point vortices, perturbed by a certain transport type noise, converges weakly to the vorticity form of 2D Navier--Stokes equations driven by the space-time white noise.
In this paper, we use forward-backward stochastic differential systems to study the solution of two and d dimensional ($d\geq 3$) Navier-Stokes-$α$ equation. For the two dimensional Navier-Stokes-$α$ equation with space periodic boundary conditions, we derive the Feynmann-Kac formula associated with the vorticity equation and prove the global existence and uniqueness of the solution. For the d dimensional ($d\geq 3$) case, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solution in Sobolev space.
We prove that the small scale structures of the stochastically forced Navier-Stokes equations approach those of the naturally associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as the scales get smaller. Precisely, we prove that the rescaled k-th spatial Fourier mode converges weakly on path space to an associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as |k| --> infty . In addition, we prove that the Navier-Stokes equations and the naturally associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process induce equivalent transition densities if the viscosity is replaced with sufficient hyperviscosity. This gives a simple proof of unique ergo…
We consider a family of stochastic 2D Euler equations in vorticity form on the torus, with transport type noises and $L^2$-initial data. Under a suitable scaling of the noises, we show that the solutions converge weakly to that of the deterministic 2D Navier--Stokes equations. Consequently, we deduce that the weak solutions of the stochastic 2D Euler equations are approximately unique and "weakly quenched exponential mixing".
We consider the 3D hyperviscous Navier-Stokes equations in vorticity form, where the dissipative term $-Δ\vec ξ$ of the Navier-Stokes equations is substituted by $(-Δ)^{1+c} \vec ξ$. We investigate how big the correction term $c$ has to be in order to prove, by means of Girsanov transform, that the vorticity equations are equivalent (in law) to easier reference equations obtained by neglecting the stretching term. This holds as soon as $c>\frac 12$, improving previous results obtained with $c>\frac 32$ in a different setting in [5,14].
We derive a quantiative propagation of chaos result for a mixed-sign point vortex system on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with independent Brownian noise, at an optimal rate. We introduce a pairing between vortices of opposite sign, and using the vorticity formulation of 2D Navier-Stokes, we define an associated tensorized vorticity equation on $\mathbb{T}^2\times\mathbb{T}^2$ with the same well-posedness theory as the original equation. Solutions of the new PDE can be projected onto solutions of Navier-Stokes, and the tensorized equation allows us to exploit existing propagation of chaos theory for identica…
