We consider the Navier-Stokes system in two and three space dimensions perturbed by transport noise and subject to periodic boundary conditions. The noise arises from perturbing the advecting velocity field by space-time dependent noise that is smooth in space and rough in time. We study the system within the framework of rough path theory and, in particular, the recently developed theory of unbounded rough drivers. We introduce an intrinsic notion of a weak solution of the Navier-Stokes system, establish suitable a priori estimates and prove existence. In two dimensions, we prove that the solution is unique and stable with respect to the driving noise.
We consider a parameter estimation problem to determine the viscosity $ν$ of a stochastically perturbed 2D Navier-Stokes system. We derive several different classes of estimators based on the first $N$ Fourier modes of a single sample path observed on a finite time interval. We study the consistency and asymptotic normality of these estimators. Our analysis treats strong, pathwise solutions for both the periodic and bounded domain cases in the presence of an additive white (in time) noise.
We introduce a rough perturbation of the Navier-Stokes system and justify its physical relevance from balance of momentum and conservation of circulation in the inviscid limit. We present a framework for a well-posedness analysis of the system. In particular, we define an intrinsic notion of solution based on ideas from the rough path theory and study the system in an equivalent vorticity formulation. In two space dimensions, we prove that well-posedness and enstrophy balance holds. Moreover, we derive rough path continuity of the equation, which yields a Wong-Zakai result for Brownian driving…
This paper presents a new approach to the local well-posedness of the $1d$ compressible Navier-Stokes systems with rough initial data. Our approach is based on establishing some smoothing and Lipschitz-type estimates for the $1d$ parabolic equation with piecewise continuous coefficients.
We consider the barotropic Navier--Stokes system driven by a physically well-motivated transport noise in both continuity as well as momentum equation. We focus on three different situations: (i) the noise is smooth in time and the equations are understood as in the sense of the classical weak deterministic theory, (ii) the noise is rough in time and we interpret the equations in the framework of rough paths with unbounded rough drivers and (iii) we have a Brownian noise of Stratonovich type and study the existence of martingale solutions. The first situation serves as an approximation for (ii…
We consider point vortex systems on the two dimensional torus perturbed by environmental noise. It is shown that, under a suitable scaling of the noises, weak limit points of the empirical measures are solutions to the vorticity formulation of deterministic 2D Navier-Stokes equations.
We prove the existence of short time, low regularity solutions to the incompressible, isotropic Lagrangian Averaged Navier-Stokes equations with initial data in Sobolev spaces. In the special case of initial datum in the Sobolev space $H^{3/2,2}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, we obtain a global solution, improving on previous results, which required data in $H^{3,2}(\mathbb{R}^3)$.
In this paper we investigate the stochastic 3D Navier-Stokes equations perturbed by linear multiplicative Gaussian noise of convolution type by transformation to random PDEs. We are not interested in the regularity of the initial data. We focus on obtaining bounds from below for the life span associated with regular initial data. The key point of the proof is the fixed point argument.
We study the large-time behavior of the 1D barotropic Navier-Stokes flow perturbed from Riemann data generating a composition of two shock waves with small amplitudes. We prove that the perturbed Navier-Stokes flow converges, uniformly in space, towards a composition of two viscous shock waves as time goes to infinity, up to dynamical shifts. Especially, the strengths of the two waves can be chosen independently. This is the first result for the convergence to a composite wave of two viscous shocks with independently small amplitudes.
The aim of this work is to prove an existence and uniqueness result of Kato-Fujita type for the Navier-Stokes equations, in vorticity form, in $2-D$ and $3-D$, perturbed by a gradient type multiplicative Gaussian noise (for sufficiently small initial vorticity). These equations are considered in order to model hydrodynamic turbulence. The approach was motivated by a recent result by V. Barbu and the second named author in \cite{b1}, that treats the stochastic $3D$-Navier-Stokes equations, in vorticity form, perturbed by linear multiplicative Gaussian noise. More precisely, the equation is tran…
We prove that the small scale structures of the stochastically forced Navier-Stokes equations approach those of the naturally associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as the scales get smaller. Precisely, we prove that the rescaled k-th spatial Fourier mode converges weakly on path space to an associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process as |k| --> infty . In addition, we prove that the Navier-Stokes equations and the naturally associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process induce equivalent transition densities if the viscosity is replaced with sufficient hyperviscosity. This gives a simple proof of unique ergo…
We consider the Navier-Stokes equation in a domain with irregular boundaries. The irregularity is modeled by a spatially homogeneous random process, with typical size $\eps \ll 1$. In a parent paper, we derived a homogenized boundary condition of Navier type as $\eps \to 0$. We show here that for a large class of boundaries, this Navier condition provides a $O(\eps^{3/2} |\ln \eps|^{1/2})$ approximation in $L^2$, instead of $O(\eps^{3/2})$ for periodic irregularities. Our result relies on the study of an auxiliary boundary layer system. Decay properties of this boundary layer are deduced from …
We prove the existence and uniqueness of maximal solutions to the 3D SALT (Stochastic Advection by Lie Transport, [Holm arXiv:1410.8311]) Navier-Stokes Equation in velocity and vorticity form, on the torus and the bounded domain respectively. The current work partners the paper [Goodair et al, arXiv:2209.09137] as an application of the abstract framework presented there, justifying the results first announced in [Goodair, arXiv:2202.09242v2]. In particular this represents the first well-posedness result for a fluid equation perturbed by a general transport type noise on a bounded domain.
We show that in bounded domains with no-slip boundary conditions, the Navier-Stokes pressure can be determined in a such way that it is strictly dominated by viscosity. As a consequence, in a general domain we can treat the Navier-Stokes equations as a perturbed vector diffusion equation, instead of as a perturbed Stokes system. We illustrate the advantages of this view in a number of ways. In particular, we provide simple proofs of (i) local-in-time existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for an unconstrained formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, and (ii) the unconditional stabilit…
In this paper, we study the initial and boundary value problem of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half space. We prove the unique existence of weak solution $u\in L^q(\R_+\times (0,T))$ with $\nabla u\in L^{\frac{q}{2}}_{loc}(\R_+\times (0,T))$ for a short time interval when the initial data $h\in {B}_q^{-\frac{2}{q}}(\R_+)$ and the boundary data $ g\in L^q(0,T;B^{-\frac{1}{q}}_q(\Rn))+L^q(\Rn;B^{-\frac{1}{2q}}_q(0,T)) $ with normal component $g_n\in L^q(0,T;\dot{B}^{-\frac{1}{q}}_q(\Rn))$, $n+2<q<\infty$ are given.
We study the high Reynolds number limit of a viscous fluid in the presence of a rough boundary. We consider the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier slip boundary condition, in a domain whose boundaries exhibit fast oscillations in the form $x_2 = \varepsilon^{1+α} η(x_1/\varepsilon)$, $α> 0$. Under suitable conditions on the oscillating parameter $\varepsilon$ and the viscosity $ν$, we show that solutions of the Navier-Stokes system converge to solutions of the Euler system in the vanishing limit of both $ν$ and $\varepsilon$. The main issue is that the curvature…
In this paper, we consider inverse time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic scattering from locally perturbed rough surfaces in three dimensions. The scattering interface is supposed to be the graph of a Lipschitz continuous function with compact support. It is proved that an acoustically sound-soft or sound-hard surface can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern of infinite number of incident plane waves with distinct directions. Moreover, a single point source or plane wave can be used to uniquely determine a scattering surface of polyhedral type. These uniqueness results apply to…
The paper concerns with the global well-posedness issue of the 2D incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes (INS) equations with fractional dissipation and rough density. We first establish the $L^q_t(L^p)$-maximal regularity estimate for the generalized Stokes system with fractional dissipation, and then we employ it to obtain the global existence of solution for the 2D fractional INS equations with large velocity field, provided that the $L^2\cap L^\infty$-norm of density minus constant 1 is small enough. Moreover, by additionally assuming that the density minus 1 is sufficiently small in t…
In this paper, we study the global well-posedness problem for the 1d compressible Navier-Stokers system (cNSE) in gas dynamics with rough initial data. Frist, Liu- Yu (2022) established the global well-posedness theory for the 1d isentropic cNSE with initial velocity data in BV space. Then, it was extended to the 1d cNSE for the polytropic ideal gas with initial velocity and temperature data in BV space by Wang-Yu-Zhang (2022). We improve the global well-posedness result of Liu-Yu with initial velocity data in $W^{2γ,1}$ space; and of Wang-Yu-Zhang with initial velocity data in $ L^2\cap W^{2γ…
We study the Cauchy problem for the (generalized) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations \begin{align} u_t+(-Δ)^αu+u\cdot \nabla u +\nabla p=0, \ \ {\rm div} u=0, \ \ u(0,x)= u_0. \nonumber \end{align} We show the analyticity of the local solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation ($α=1$) with any initial data in critical Besov spaces $\dot{B}^{n/p-1}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ with $1< p<\infty, \ 1\le q\le \infty $ and the solution is global if $u_0$ is sufficiently small in $\dot{B}^{n/p-1}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. In the case $p=\infty$, the analyticity for the local solutions of the Navier-Stokes equ…
The general concern of this paper is the effect of rough boundaries on fluids. We consider a stationary flow, governed by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, in an infinite domain bounded by two horizontal rough plates. The roughness is modeled by a spatially homogeneous random field, with characteristic size $\eps$. A mathematical analysis of the flow for small $\eps$ is performed. The Navier's wall law is rigorously deduced from this analysis.
We introduce a new technique for studying well posedness and energy estimates for evolution equations with a rough transport term. The technique is based on finding suitable space-time weight functions for the equations at hand. As an example we study the well posedness of the generalized viscous Burgers equation perturbed by a rough path transport noise.
We consider the homogenization of the Navier-Stokes equation, set in a channel with a rough boundary, of small amplitude and wavelength $ε$. It was shown recently that, for any non-degenerate roughness pattern, and for any reasonable condition imposed at the rough boundary, the homogenized boundary condition in the limit $ε= 0$ is always no-slip. We give in this paper error estimates for this homogenized no-slip condition, and provide a more accurate effective boundary condition, of Navier type. Our result extends those obtained in previous works, in which the special case of a Dirichlet condi…
We consider a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation driven by a deterministic rough path which describes the conditional probability of a McKean-Vlasov diffusion with "common" noise. To study the equation we build a self-contained framework of non-linear rough integration theory which we use to study McKean-Vlasov equations perturbed by rough paths. We construct an appropriate notion of solution of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation and prove well-posedness.
In this paper we prove the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution (in PDE sense) to the stochastic Navier-Stokes equations on the rotating 2-dimensional unit sphere perturbed by stable Lévy noise. This strong solution turns out to exist globally in time.
In this paper we focus on the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with a rough external force. If the given rough external force is small, we prove the local-in-time existence of this system for any initial data belonging to the critical Besov space $\dot{B}_{p,p}^{-1+\frac{3}{p}}$, where $3<p<\infty$. Moreover, We show the long-time behavior of the priori global solutins constructed by us. Also, we give three kinds of uniqueness results of the forced Navier-Stokes equations.
In this paper we study a fractional diffusion Boussinesq model which couples a Navier-Stokes type equation with fractional diffusion for the velocity and a transport equation for the temperature. We establish global well-posedness results with rough initial data.
We prove an optimal dispersive $L^{\infty}$ decay estimate for a three dimensional wave equation perturbed with a large non smooth potential belonging to a particular Kato class. The proof is based on a spectral representation of the solution and suitable resolvent estimates for the perturbed operator.
By applying Wiegner' method in \cite{Wiegner}, we first prove the large time decay estimate for the global solutions of a 2.5 dimensional Navier-Stokes system, which is a sort of singular perturbed 2-D Navier-Stokes system in three space dimension. As an application of this decay estimate, we give a simplified proof for the global wellposedness result in \cite{cg3} for 3-D Navier-Stokes system with one slow variable. Let us also mention that compared with the assumptions for the initial data in \cite{cg3}, here the assumptions in Theorem \ref{slowvarsimplifie} are weaker.
In this paper we derive local estimates of solutions of the Perturbed Stokes system. This system arises as a reduction of the Stokes system near a curved part of the boundary of the domain if one applies a diffeomorphism flatting the boundary. The estimates obtained in the paper play the crucial role in the investigation of partial regularity of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes system near a curved part of the boundary of the domain.
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system on time-dependent domains with prescribed motion of the boundary. For both the no-slip boundary conditions as well as slip boundary conditions we prove local-in-time existence of strong solutions. These results are obtained using a transformation of the problem to a fixed domain and an existence theorem for Navier-Stokes like systems with lower order terms and perturbed boundary conditions. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness principle for slip boundary conditions which remained so far open question.
Consider the elastic scattering of a plane or point incident wave by an unbounded and rigid rough surface. The angular spectrum representation (ASR) for the time-harmonic Navier equation is derived in three dimensions. The ASR is utilized as a radiation condition to the elastic rough surface scattering problem. The uniqueness is proved through a Rellich-type identity for surfaces given by uniformly Lipschitz functions. In the case of flat surfaces with a local perturbation, we deduce an equivalent variational formulation in a truncated bounded domain and show the existence results for general …
We address the issue of existence of weak solutions for the non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes system with Navier friction boundary conditions allowing the presence of vacuum zones and assuming rough conditions on the data. We also study the convergence, as the viscosity goes to zero, of weak solutions for the non-homogeneous Navier-Stokes system with Navier friction boundary conditions to the strong solution of the Euler equations with variable density, provided that the initial data converge in $L^{2}$ to a smooth enough limit.
In this paper, we show that Landau solutions to the Navier-Stokes system are asymptotically stable under $L^3$-perturbations. We give the local well-posedness of solutions to the perturbed system with initial data in $L_σ^3$ space and the global well-posedness with small initial data in $L_σ^3$ space, together with a study of the $L^q$ decay for all $q>3.$ Moreover, we have also studied the local well-posedness, global well-posedness and stability in $L^p$ spaces for $3<p<\infty$.
In this paper we are concerned with the initial boundary value problem of the 2, 3-D Navier-Stokes equations with mixed boundary conditions including conditions for velocity, static pressure, stress, rotation and Navier slip condition together. Under a compatibility condition at the initial instance it is proved that for the small data there exists a unique solution on the given interval of time. Also, it is proved that if a solution is given, then there exists a unique solution for small perturbed data satisfying the compatibility condition. Our smoothness condition for initial functions in t…
The ergodic properties of the randomly forced Navier-Stokes system have been extensively studied in the literature during the last two decades. The problem has always been considered in bounded domains, in order to have, for example, suitable spectral properties for the Stokes operator, to ensure some compactness properties for the resolving operator of the system and the associated functional spaces, etc. In the present paper, we consider the Navier-Stokes system in an unbounded domain satisfying the Poincaré inequality. Assuming that the system is perturbed by a bounded non-degenerate noise,…
We consider a system describing the long-time dynamics of an hydrodynamical, density-dependent flow under the effects of gravitational forces. We prove that if the Froude number is sufficiently small such system is globally well posed with respect to a $ H^s, \ s>1/2 $ Sobolev regularity. Moreover if the Froude number converges to zero we prove that the solutions of the aforementioned system converge (strongly) to a stratified three-dimensional Navier-Stokes system. No smallness assumption is assumed on the initial data.
From the steady Stokes and Navier-Stokes models, a penalization method has been considered by several authors for approximating those fluid equations around obstacles. In this work, we present a justification for using fictitious domains to study obstacles immersed in incompressible viscous fluids through a simplified version of Brinkman's law for porous media. If the scalar function $ψ$ is considered as the inverse of permeability, it is possible to study the singularities of $ψ$ as approximations of obstacles (when $ψ$ tends to $\infty$) or of the domain corresponding to the fluid (when $ψ= …
We show the unique existence of solutions to stationary Navier-Stokes equations with small singular external forces belonging to a critical space. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest critical space that is available up to now for this kind of existence. This result can be viewed as the stationary counterpart of the existence result obtained by H. Koch and D. Tataru for the free non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations with initial data in BMO$^{-1}$. The stability of the stationary solutions in such spaces is also obtained by a series of sharp estimates for resolvents of a singular…
Let G be the (open) set of~$\dot H^{\frac 1 2}$ divergence free vector fields generating a global smooth solution to the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We prove that any element of G can be perturbed by an arbitrarily large, smooth divergence free vector field which varies slowly in one direction, and the resulting vector field (which remains arbitrarily large) is an element of G if the variation is slow enough. This result implies that through any point in G passes an uncountable number of arbitrarily long segments included in G.
In this article, we study optimal feedback control synthesis of stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations perturbed Levy type noise with distributed stochastic control process acting on the state equation. We use the dynamic programming approach to solve this control problem which involves the study of second order infinite dimensional Hamilton- Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation consisting of an integro-differential operator with Levy measure associated with the stochastic control problem. Using the regularizing properties of the transition semigroup corresponding to the stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes eq…
In this paper, we introduce a finite propagation speed perturbation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NS). The model we consider is inspired by a hyperbolic perturbation of the heat equation due to Cattaneo (Sulla conduzione del calore. Atti Semin. Mat. Fis. Univ., Modena, 1949, 3:83-101) and by an equation that Vishik and Fursikov (Solutions statistiques homogènes des systèmes différentiels paraboliques et du système de Navier-Stokes. Ann. Scuola Norm. Sup. Pisa Cl. Sci., 1977, 4:531-576) investigated in order to find statistical solutions to (NS). We prove that the solutions to …
In this paper, we are concerned with the system of the non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the Maxwell equations through the Lorentz force in three space dimensions. The global existence of solutions near constant steady states is established, and the time-decay rates of perturbed solutions are obtained. The proof for existence is due to the classical energy method, and the investigation of large-time behavior is based on the linearized analysis of the non-isentropic Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations and the electromagnetic part for the linearized isentropic Navier-S…
