In this paper we disprove a conjecture about numerators of divided Bernoulli numbers $B_n/n$ and $B_n/n(n-1)$ which was suggested by Roland Bacher. We give some counterexamples. Finally, we extend the results to the general case.
For any positive integer $n$ along with parameters $α$ and $ν$, we define and investigate $α$-shifted, $ν$-offset, floor sequences of length $n$. We find exact and asymptotic formulas for the number of integers in such a sequence that are in a particular congruence class. As we will see, these quantities are related to certain problems of counting lattice points contained in regions of the plane bounded by conic sections. We give specific examples for the number of lattice points contained in elliptical regions and make connections to a few well-known rings of integers, including the Gaussian …
Motivated by the study of integer partitions, we consider partitions of integers into fractions of a particular form, namely with constant denominators and distinct odd or even numerators. When numerators are odd, the numbers of partitions for integers smaller than the denominator form symmetric patterns. If the number of terms is restricted to $h$, then the nonzero terms of the generating function are unimodal, with the integer $h$ having the most partitions. Such properties can be applied to a particular class of nonlinear Diophantine equations. We also examine partitions with even numerator…
We give an instant evaluation of multiple Zeta function at non-positive integers by elementary methods and discuss the Fourier theory (on unit interval) of the product of Bernoulli polynomials. We also show that the polynomial expression for Hurwitz Zeta function(at non-positive integral values of the first variable) and the polynomial expression for Bernoulli polynomials are equivalent.
In this paper, we exploit the r-Stirling numbers of both kinds in order to give explicit formulae for the values of the high order Bernoulli numbers and polynomials of both kinds at integers. We give also some identities linked the r-Stirling numbers and binomial coefficients.
We present a new approach to deal with Fraenkel's conjecture, which describes how the integers can be partitioned into sets of rational Beatty sequences, in the case where the numerators of the moduli are equal. We use this approach to give a new proof of the known $n=4$ case when the numerators are equal.
Consider the average of the first n k-th powers. We pose and answer the following natural question: For which values of n and k is this average an integer? If k is odd the answer is easy; it is an integer as long as n is incongruent to 2 modulo 4. If k is even then the criterion involves the denominator of the k-th Bernoulli number. The average is an integer iff $n$ is not divisible by any prime which divides the denominator of the k-th Bernoulli number.
We study the interplay between recurrences for zeta related functions at integer values, `Minor Corner Lattice' Toeplitz determinants and integer composition based sums. Our investigations touch on functional identities due to Ramanujan and Grosswald, the transcendence of the zeta function at odd integer values, the Li Criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis and pseudo-characteristic polynomials for zeta related functions. We begin with a recent result for ζ(2s) and some seemingly new Bernoulli relations, which we use to obtain a generalised Ramanujan polynomial and properties thereof.
Let $[x]$ be the integral part of $x$, $n>1$ be a positive integer and $χ_n$ denote the trivial Dirichlet character modulo $n$. In this paper, we use an identity established by Z. H. Sun to get congruences of $T_{m,k}(n)=\sum_{x=1}^{[n/m]}\frac{χ_n(x)}{x^k}\left(\bmod n^{r+1}\right)$ for $r\in \{1,2\}$, any positive integer $m $ with $n \equiv \pm 1 \left(\bmod m \right)$ in terms of Bernoulli polynomials. As its an application, we also obtain some new congruences involving binomial coefficients modulo $n^4$ in terms of generalized Bernoulli numbers.
There are classical congruences between the class number of an imaginary quadratic field and a Bernoulli number or an Euler number. Under the BSD conjecture, Onishi obtained an elliptic generalization of these congruences, which gives congruences between the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of certain elliptic curves with CM by the Gauss integers ring and Mordell-Weil rank 0, and a coefficient of power series expansion of an elliptic function associated to Gauss integers ring. In this paper, we provide Onishi's type congruences for the Eisenstein integers case.
Let $B_n$ ($n = 0, 1, 2, ...$) denote the usual $n$-th Bernoulli number. Let $l$ be a positive even integer where $l=12$ or $l \geq 16$. It is well known that the numerator of the reduced quotient $|B_l/l|$ is a product of powers of irregular primes. Let $(p,l)$ be an irregular pair with $B_l/l \not\equiv B_{l+p-1}/(l+p-1) \modp{p^2}$. We show that for every $r \geq 1$ the congruence $B_{m_r}/m_r \equiv 0 \modp{p^r}$ has a unique solution $m_r$ where $m_r \equiv l \modp{p-1}$ and $l \leq m_r < (p-1)p^{r-1}$. The sequence $(m_r)_{r \geq 1}$ defines a $p$-adic integer $χ_{(p, l)}$ which is a zer…
This paper presents a new generalization of the Genocchi numbers and the Genocchi theorem. As consequences, we obtain some important families of integer-valued polynomials those are closely related to the Bernoulli polynomials. Denoting by ${(B_n)}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ the sequence of the Bernoulli numbers and by ${(B_n(X))}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ the sequence of the Bernoulli polynomials, we especially obtain that for any natural number $n$, the reciprocal polynomial of the polynomial $\big(B_n(X) - B_n\big)$ is integer-valued.
This article gives a direct formula for the computation of B(n) using the asymptotic formula $$B (n) \approx 2 {\frac {n!}{π^{n}{2}^{n}}}$$ where n is even and $n >> 1$. This is simply based on the fact that $ζ(n)$ is very near 1 when n is large and since $B (n) = 2 {\frac {ζ(n) n!}{π^{n}{2}^{n}}}$ exactly. The formula chosen for the Zeta function is the one with prime numbers from the well-known Euler product for $ζ(n)$. This algorithm is far better than the recurrence formula for the Bernoulli numbers even if each B(n) is computed individually. The author could compute $B (750,000)$ in a few…
We construct and study a certain zeta function which interpolates multi-poly-Bernoulli numbers at non-positive integers and whose values at positive integers are linear combinations of multiple zeta values. This function can be regarded as the one to be paired up with the $ξ$-function defined by Arakawa and the first-named author. We show that both are closely related to the multiple zeta functions. Further we define multi-indexed poly-Bernoulli numbers, and generalize the duality formulas for poly-Bernoulli numbers by introducing more general zeta functions.
We study a special Dirichlet series studied before by Apostol and Matsuoka and specify its values at negative integers. These values are related to a certain convolution of Bernoulli numbers
We prove formulas for the Bernoulli numbers by using the Newton-Girard identities to evaluate the Riemann zeta function at positive even integers. To do this, we define a sequence of positive integers, a sequence of polynomials, and a sequence of linear operators on the space of functions. We prove properties of these polynomials, such as the positivity of their coefficients, and present a combinatorial formula for the Bernoulli numbers as a positive sum over plane trees which can be generalized as a transform of sequences. We also combinatorially prove the Newton-Girard identities using the s…
A prime $p$ is a Wolstenholme prime if $\binom{2p}{p}\equiv2$ mod $p^4$, or, equivalently, if $p$ divides the numerator of the Bernoulli number $B_{p-3}$; a Vandiver prime $p$ is one that divides the Euler number $E_{p-3}$. Only two Wolstenholme primes and eight Vandiver primes are known. We increase the search range in the first case by a factor of $10$, and show that no additional Wolstenholme primes exist up to $10^{11}$, and in the second case by a factor of $20$, proving that no additional Vandiver primes occur up to this same bound. To facilitate this, we develop a number of new congruen…

Let ${\mathcal{P}_{n}}$ denote the set of positive integers which are prime to $n$. Let $B_{n}$ be the $n$-th Bernoulli number. For any prime $p \ge 11$ and integer $r\ge 2$, we prove that $$ \sum\limits_{\begin{smallmatrix} {{l}_{1}}+{{l}_{2}}+\cdots +{{l}_{6}}={{p}^{r}} {{l}_{1}},\cdots ,{{l}_{6}}\in {\mathcal{P}_{p}} \end{smallmatrix}}{\frac{1}{{{l}_{1}}{{l}_{2}}{{l}_{3}}{{l}_{4}}{{l}_{5}}{l}_{6}}}\equiv - \frac{5!}{18}p^{r-1}B_{p-3}^{2} \pmod{{{p}^{r}}}. $$ This extends a family of curious congruences. We also obtain other interesting congruences involving multiple harmonic sums and Bernou…
The Markov numbers are the positive integer solutions of the Diophantine equation $x^2 + y^2 + z^2 = 3xyz$. Already in 1880, Markov showed that all these solutions could be generated along a binary tree. So it became quite usual (and useful) to index the Markov numbers by the rationals between 0 and 1 which stand at the same place in the Stern-Brocot binary tree. The Frobenius conjecture claims that each Markov number appears at most once in the tree. In particular, if the conjecture is true, the order of Markov numbers would establish a new strict order on the rationals. Aigner suggested thre…
We find general solutions to the generating-function equation sum c_q^{(X)} z^q = F(z)^X, where X is a complex number and F(z) is a convergent power series with |F(0)| >0. We then use these results to derive finite expressions containing only integers or simple fractions for partition functions and for Euler, Bernoulli, and Stirling numbers.
We first review our previous works of Arakawa and the authors on two, closely related single-variable zeta functions. Their special values at positive and negative integer arguments are respectively multiple zeta values and poly-Bernoulli numbers. We then introduce, as a generalization of Sasaki's work, level 2 analogue of one of the two zeta functions and prove results analogous to those by Arakawa and the first named author.
A sequence of rational numbers as a generalization of the sequence of Bernoulli numbers is introduced. Sums of products involving the terms of this generalized sequence are then obtained using an application of the Faà di Bruno's formula. These sums of products are analogous to the higher order Bernoulli numbers and are used to develop the closed form expressions for the sums of products involving the power sums $\displaystyle Ψ_k(x,n):=\sum_{d|n}μ(d)d^k S_k(\frac{x}{d}), n\in\mathbb{Z}^+$ which are defined via the Möbius function $μ$ and the usual power sum $S_k(x)$ of a real or complex varia…
In this note, starting with a little-known result of Kuo, I derive a recurrence relation for the Bernoulli numbers $B_{2 n}$, $n$ being any positive integer. This new recurrence seems advantageous in comparison to other known formulae since it allows the computation of both $B_{4 n}$ and $B_{4 n +2}$ from only $B_0, B_2,..., B_{2n}$.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the sums of divisors when the integers are modelled with the Bernoulli random walk; We prealably study the correlation properties of the corresponding system.
We discuss the asymptotic expansions of certain products of Bernoulli numbers and factorials, e.g., \[ \prod_{ν=1}^n |B_{2ν}| \quad \text{and} \quad \prod_{ν=1}^n (k ν)!^{ν^r} \quad \text{as} \quad n \to \infty \] for integers $k \geq 1$ and $r \geq 0$. Our main interest is to determine exact expressions, in terms of known constants, for the asymptotic constants of these expansions and to show some relations among them.
Poly-Bernoulli numbers are one of generalizations of the classical Bernoulli numbers. Since a negative index poly-Bernoulli number is an integer, it is an interesting problem to study this number from combinatorial viewpoint. In this short article, we give a new combinatorial relation between symmetrized poly-Bernoulli numbers and the Dumont-Foata polynomials.
We develop a method for generating pseudorandom binary sequences using the Bernoulli map on cubic algebraic integers. The distinguishing characteristic of our generator is that it generates chaotic true orbits of the Bernoulli map by exact computation. In particular, we clarify a way to properly prepare a set of initial points (i.e., seeds), which is needed when generating multiple pseudorandom sequences. With this seed selection method, we can distribute the initial points almost uniformly in the unit interval and can also guarantee that the orbits starting from them do not merge. We also rep…
By using $q$-Volkenborn integration and uniform differentiable on $\mathbb{Z}%_{p}$, we construct $p$-adic $q$-zeta functions. These functions interpolate the $q$-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. The value of $p$-adic $q$-zeta functions at negative integers are given explicitly. We also define new generating functions of $q$-Bernoulli numbers and polynomials. By using these functions, we prove analytic continuation of some basic (or $q$-) $L$% -series. These generating functions also interpolate Barnes' type Changhee $% q $-Bernoulli numbers with attached to Dirichlet character as well. By a…
Let $m$, $r$ and $n$ be positive integers. We denote by ${\bf k}\vdash n$ any tuple of odd positive integers ${\bf k}=(k_1,\dots,k_t)$ such that $k_1+\dots+k_t=n$ and $k_j\ge 3$ for all $j$. In this paper we prove that for every sufficiently large prime $p$ $$ \sum_{\substack{l_1+l_2+\cdots+l_n=mp^r p\nmid l_1 l_2 \cdots l_n }} \frac1{l_1l_2\cdots l_n} \equiv p^{r-1} \sum_{{\bf k}\vdash n} C_{m,{\bf k}} B_{p-{\bf k}} \pmod{p^r} $$ where $B_{p-{\bf k}}=B_{p-k_1}B_{p-k_2}\cdots B_{p-k_t}$ are products of Bernoulli numbers and the coefficients $C_{m,{\bf k}}$ are polynomials of $m$ independent of…
The \emph{Barnes $ζ$-function} is \[ ζ_n (z, x; \a) := \sum_{\m \in \Z_{\ge 0}^n} \frac{1}{\left(x + m_1 a_1 + \dots + m_n a_n \right)^z} \] defined for $\Re(x) > 0$ and $\Re(z) > n$ and continued meromorphically to $\C$. Specialized at negative integers $-k$, the Barnes $ζ$-function gives \[ ζ_n (-k, x; \a) = \frac{(-1)^n k!}{(k+n)!} \, B_{k+n} (x; \a) \] where $B_k(x; \a)$ is a \emph{Bernoulli--Barnes polynomial}, which can be also defined through a generating function that has a slightly more general form than that for Bernoulli polynomials. Specializing $B_k(0; \a)$ gives the \emph{Bernoul…
In recent years, studying degenerate versions of various special polynomials and numbers have attracted many mathematicians. Here we introduce degenerate type 2 Bernoulli polynomials, fully degenerate type 2 Bernoulli polynomials and degenerate type 2 Euler polynomials, and their corresponding numbers, as degenerate and type 2 versions of Bernoulli and Euler numbers. Regarding to those polynomials and numbers, we derive some identities, distribution relations, Witt type formulas and analogues for the Bernoulli's interpretation of powers of the first $m$ positive integers in terms of Bernoulli …
This paper sets the groundwork for the consideration of families of recursively defined polynomials and rational functions capable of describing the Bernoulli numbers. These families of functions arise from various recursive definitions of the Bernoulli numbers. The derivation of these recursive definitions is shown here using the original application of the Bernoulli numbers: sums of powers of positive integers, i.e., Faulhaber's problem. Since two of the three recursive forms of the Bernoulli numbers shown here are readily available in literature and simple to derive, this paper focuses on t…
In this paper we construct the $q$-analogue of Barnes's Bernoulli numbers and polynomials of degree 2, for positive even integers, which is an answer to a part of Schlosser's question. For positive odd integers, Schlosser's question is still open. Finally, we will treat the $q$-analogue of the sums of powers of consecutive integers.
In this paper we construct the q-analogue of Barnes' Bernoulli numbers and plynomials of degree 2, which is an answer to a part of Schlosser's question. Finally, we treat the q-analogue of the sums of powers of consecutive integrs.
Alternating variants of multiple poly-Bernoulli numbers and finite multiple zeta values in characteristic 0 and p This paper consists of two parts: the characteristic 0 part and the characteristic p part. In characteristic 0 part, we introduce an alternating extension of multiple poly-Bernoulli numbers of K. Imatomi, M. Kaneko and E. Takeda and obtain explicit presentations of the alternating finite multiple zeta values introduced by J. Zhao in term of the alternating extension of multiple poly-Bernoulli numbers. In characteristic p part, we introduce positive characteristic analogues of alter…
We give a new identity involving Bernoulli polynomials and combinatorial numbers. This provides, in particular, a Faulhaber-like formula for sums of the form $1^m (n-1)^m + 2^m (n-2)^m + \cdots + (n-1)^m 1^m$ for positive integers $m$ and $n$.
Let $λ\in (1,\sqrt{2}]$ be an algebraic integer with Mahler measure $2.$ A classical result of Garsia shows that the Bernoulli convolution $μ_λ$ is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure with a density function in $L^\infty$. In this paper, we show that the density function is continuous.
Recently, the two variable $q$-$L$-functions which interpolate the generalized $q$-Bernoulli polynomials associated with $χ$ are introduced and studied, cf. [2]. In this paper, we construct multiple Dirichlet's $q$-$L$-function which interpolates the generalized multiple $q$-Bernoulli numbers attached to $χ$ at negative integer and study its properties.
In the paper, the authors establish an explicit formula for computing Bernoulli polynomials at non-negative integer points in terms of $r$-Stirling numbers of the second kind.
In 2003, Zhao discovered a curious congruence involving harmonic series and Bernoulli numbers: for any odd prime $p$, $$\sum_{\substack{i,j,k\ge 1\\\gcd(ijk,p)=1\ı+j+k=p}}\frac{1}{ijk}\equiv -2B_{p-3} \pmod{p},$$ where $B_n$ is the $n$-th Bernoulli number. This congruence was generalized by Wang and Cai in 2014, and Cai, Shen and Jia in 2017 by replacing the odd prime $p$ in the summation and modulus with an odd prime power, and a product of two odd prime powers, respectively. In particular, Cai, Shen and Jia proposed a conjectural congruence: for any positive integer $n$ with an odd prime fac…
An existing dialogue between number theory and dynamical systems is advanced. A combinatorial device gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a sequence of non-negative integers to count the periodic points in a dynamical system. This is applied to study linear recurrence sequences which count periodic points. Instances where the $p$-parts of an integer sequence themselves count periodic points are studied. The Mersenne sequence provides one example, and the denominators of the Bernoulli numbers provide another. The methods give a dynamical interpretation of many classical congruences suc…
In this paper, we use two different approaches to introduce $q$-analogs of Riemann's zeta function and prove that their values at even integers are related to the $q$-Bernoulli and $q$ Euler's numbers introduced by Ismail and Mansour [Analysis and Applications, {\bf{17}}, 6, 2019, 853--895].
This is a collection of definitions, notations and proofs for the Bernoulli numbers $B_n$ appearing in formulas for the sum of integer powers, some of which can be found scattered in the large related historical literature in French, English and German. We provide elementary proofs for the original convention with ${\mathcal B}_1=1/2$ and also for the current convention with $B_1=-1/2$, using only the binomial theorem and the concise Blissard symbolic (umbral) notation.
In this paper, we deal with q-Euler numbers and q-Bernoulli numbers. We derive some interesting relations for q-Euler numbers and polynomials by using their generating function and derivative operator. Also, we show between the q-Euler numbers and q-Bernoulli numbers via the p-adic q-integral in the p-adic integer ring.
