We give an algorithm to decide which elements of pi_2(S^2\times S^1#...#S^2\times S^1) can be represented by embedded spheres. Such spheres correspond to splittings of the free group on k generators. Equivalently our algorithm decides whether, for a handlebody N, an element in pi_2(N,\partial N) can be represented by an embedded disc. We also give an algorithm to decide when classes in $π_2(S^2\times S^1#...#S^2\times S^1)$ can be represented by disjoint embedded spheres.
We introduce the splitting complex of a free group which is analogous to the complex of curves of a surface. We show that the splitting complex of the free group on k generators embeds in the complex of curves of a surface of genus $k$ as a quasi-convex subset.
A surface in the 4-sphere is trivially embedded, if it bounds a 3-dimensional handle body in the 4-sphere. For a surface trivially embedded in the 4-sphere, a diffeomorphism over this surface is extensible if and only if this preserves the Rokhlin quadratic form of this embedded surface.
For a non-orientable closed surface standardly embedded in the 4-sphere, a diffeomorphism over this surface is extendable if and only if this diffeomorphism preserves the Guillou-Marin quadratic form of this embedded surface.
A strategy for constructing an embedded sphere in a 4-manifold realizing a given homology class which has been successfully applied in the past is to represent the class as a first step stably by an embedded sphere, i.e. after adding products of 2-spheres, and to move that sphere back into the original manifold. In this paper, we study under what conditions the first step of this approach can be carried out if the 4-manifold at hand is not simply connected. One of our main results is that there are - apart from the well known Arf invariant - additional bordism theoretical obstructions to stabl…
In this note we study whether specific elements in the second homology of specific simply connected closed $4$-manifolds can be represented by smooth or topologically flat embedded spheres.
For n >2, we shall show that the group Aut(NS(M)) of simplicial automorphisms of the complex NS(M) of non-separating embedded spheres in the manifold M,connected sum of n copies of S^2 X S^1, isomorphic to the group Out(F_n) of outer automorphisms of the free group F_n, where $F_n$ is identified with the fundamental group of M up to conjugacy of the base point in M.
This paper studies certain embedded spheres in closed affine manifolds. For $n \geq 3$, we investigate the dome bodies in a closed affine $n$-manifold $M$ with its boundary homeomorphic to a sphere under the assumption that a developing map restricted to a component of $\partial\hat{M}$ is an embedding onto a strictly convex sphere in $\mathbb{A}^n$. By using the recurrent property of an incomplete geodesic we show that dome bodies are compact. Then a maximal dome body is a closed solid ball bounded by a component of $\partial\hat{M}$, and hence equals $\hat{M}$. The main theorem is that the s…
The author proves that there is an open non empty set of metrics on any 3-manifold such that there exists a family of stably embedded minimal 2-spheres whose area is unbounded. This generalizes the work of T. Colding and W. Minicozzi who have shown an analogous result for the torus and B. Dean who showed the positive genus case.
A graph embedded in the 3-sphere is called irreducible if it is non-splittable and for any 2-sphere embedded in the 3-sphere that intersects the graph at one point the graph is contained in one of the 3-balls bounded by the 2-sphere. We show that irreducibility is preserved under certain deformations of embedded graphs. We show that certain embedded graphs are irreducible.
It is one of the most important facts in 4-dimensional topology that not every spherical homology class of a 4-manifold can be represented by an embedded sphere. In 1978, M. Freedman and R. Kirby showed that in the simply connected case, many of the obstructions to constructing such a sphere vanish if one modifies the ambient 4-manifold by adding products of 2-spheres, a process which is usually called stabilisation. In this paper, we extend this result to non-simply connected 4-manifolds and show how it is related to the Spin^c-bordism groups of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces.
We prove that the moduli space of 2-convex embedded n-spheres in R^{n+1} is path-connected for every n. Our proof uses mean curvature flow with surgery and can be seen as an extrinsic analog to Marques' influential proof of the path-connectedness of the moduli space of positive scalar curvature metics on three-manifolds.
Given a properly embedded graph Gamma in a ball B and a punctured sphere Sigma properly embedded in B - Gamma, we examine the conditions on Gamma that are necessary to assure that Sigma is boundary parallel.
In this note we derive an upper bound on the number of 2-spheres in the fixed point set of a smooth and homologically trivial cyclic group action of prime order on a simply-connected 4-manifold. This improves the a priori bound which is given by one half of the Euler characteristic of the 4-manifold. The result also shows that in some cases the 4-manifold does not admit such actions of a certain order at all or that any such action has to be pseudofree.
We construct infinitely many smooth oriented 4-manifolds containing pairs of homotopic, smoothly embedded 2-spheres that are not topologically isotopic, but that are equivalent by an ambient diffeomorphism inducing the identity on homology. These examples show that Gabai's recent "Generalized" 4D Lightbulb Theorem does not generalize to arbitrary 4-manifolds. In contrast, we also show that there are smoothly embedded 2-spheres that are both equivalent and topologically isotopic, but not smoothly isotopic.
We study intersection of two polyhedral spheres without self-intersections in 3-space. We find necessary and sufficient conditions on sequences x = x_1,x_2,...,x_n, y = y_1,y_2,...,y_n of positive integers, for existence of 2-dimensional polyhedra f,g in R^3 homeomorphic to the sphere and such that * f-g has n connected components, of which the i-th one has x_i neighbors in f and * g-f has n connected components, of which the i-th one has y_i neighbors in g. Analogously we study intersection of three polyhedral spheres without self-intersections in 3-space. Russian version is accessible to hig…
Let G be a finite group acting orthogonally on a pair (S^d,Γ) where Γis a finite, connected graph of genus g>1 embedded in the sphere S^d. The 3-dimensional case d=3 has recently been considered in a paper by C. Wang, S. Wang, Y. Zhang and the present author where for each genus g>1 the maximum order of a G-action on a pair (S^3,Γ) is determined and the corresponding graphs Γare classified. In the present paper we consider arbitrary dimensions d and prove that the order of G is bounded above by a polynomial of degree d/2 in g if d is even, and of degree (d+1)/2 if d is odd; moreover the degree…
It is known that the surface of a cone over the unit disc with large height has smaller distortion than the standard embedding of the 2-sphere in $\mathbb R^3$. In this note we show that distortion minimisers exist among convex embedded 2-spheres and have uniformly bounded eccentricity. Moreover, we prove that $π/2$ is a sharp lower bound on the distortion of embedded closed surfaces of positive genus.
We compute the group of link homotopy classes of link maps of two 2-spheres into 4-space. It turns out to be free abelian, generated by geometric constructions applied to the Fenn-Rolfsen link map and detected by two self-intersection invariants introduced by Paul Kirk in this setting. As a corollary, we show that any link map with one topologically embedded component is link homotopic to the unlink. Our proof introduces a new basic link homotopy, which we call a Whitney homotopy, that shrinks an embedded Whitney sphere constructed from four copies of a Whitney disk. Freedman's disk embedding …
For an integral homology 3-sphere embedded asymptotically flatly in an Euclidean space, we find a natural framing extending the standard trivialization on the asymptotically flat part.
This paper classifies embedded, codimension-one spheres which are null homotopic. This information is used to show that all null homotopic, immersed codimension-one spheres which are taut in the sense of Terng and Thorbergsson are actually distance spheres.
We use surgery along 2-tori embedded in a union of two copies of a product of punctured 2-tori to produce a new collection of homotopy 4-spheres (4-manifolds homotopy equivalent to $S^4$ and hence homeomorphic to $S^4$ but possibly not diffeomorphic to $S^4$). It is still unknown if these new examples are in fact exotic.
We prove that if an integer homology three-sphere contains an embedded incompressible torus, then its fundamental group admits irreducible SU(2)-representations. Our methods use instanton Floer homology, and in particular the surgery exact triangle, holonomy perturbations, and a non-vanishing result due to Kronheimer-Mrowka, as well as results about surgeries on cables due to Gordon.
We show that for any C^0 Jordan curve C in the sphere at infinity of H^3, there exists an embedded $H$-plane P_H in H^3 with asymptotic boundary C for any H in (-1,1). As a corollary, we proved that any quasi-Fuchsian hyperbolic 3-manifold M=SxR contains an H-surface S_H in the homotopy class of the core surface S for any H in (-1,1). We also proved that for any C^1 Jordan curve J in the sphere at infinity, there exists a unique minimizing H-plane P_H with asymptotic boundary J for a generic H in (-1,1).
We show that the following algorithmic problem is decidable: given a $2$-dimensional simplicial complex, can it be embedded (topologically, or equivalently, piecewise linearly) in $\mathbf{R}^3$? By a known reduction, it suffices to decide the embeddability of a given triangulated 3-manifold $X$ into the 3-sphere $S^3$. The main step, which allows us to simplify $X$ and recurse, is in proving that if $X$ can be embedded in $S^3$, then there is also an embedding in which $X$ has a short meridian, i.e., an essential curve in the boundary of $X$ bounding a disk in $S^3\setminus X$ with length bou…
We prove a discrete Jordan-Brouwer-Schoenflies separation theorem telling that a (d-1)-sphere H embedded in a d-sphere G defines two different connected graphs A,B in G such a way that the intersection of A and B is H and the union is G and such that the complementary graphs A,B are both d-balls. The graph theoretic definitions are due to Evako: the unit sphere of a vertex x of a graph G=(V,E) is the graph generated by {y | (x,y) in E} Inductively, a finite simple graph is called contractible if there is a vertex x such that both its unit sphere S(x) as well as the graph generated by V-{x} are…
We discuss an "extrinsic" property of knots in a 3-subspace of the 3-sphere $S^3$ to characterize how the subspace is embedded in $S^3$. Specifically, we show that every knot in a subspace of the 3-sphere is transient if and only if the exterior of the subspace is a disjoint union of handlebodies, i.e. regular neighborhoods of embedded graphs, where a knot in a 3-subspace of $S^3$ is said to be transient if it can be moved by a homotopy within the subspace to the trivial knot in $S^3$. To show this, we discuss relation between certain group-theoretic and homotopic properties of knots in a comp…
For embedded 2-spheres in a 4-manifold sharing the same embedded transverse sphere homotopy implies isotopy, provided the ambient 4-manifold has no $\BZ_2$-torsion in the fundamental group. This gives a generalization of the classical light bulb trick to 4-dimensions, the uniqueness of spanning discs for a simple closed curve in $S^4$ and $π_0(\Diff_0(S^2\times D^2)/\Diff_0(B^4))=1$. In manifolds with $\BZ_2$-torsion, one surface can be put into a normal form relative to the other.
We show that for any simple closed curve in the sphere at infinity of a Gromov hyperbolic 3-space with cocompact metric, there exist a properly embedded least area plane in the space spanning the given curve. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture of Gabai. Soma has already proven this conjecture earlier. Our technique here is simpler and more general, and it can be applied to many similar settings.
We consider an embedding of a $2$-dimensional CW complex into the $3$-sphere, and construct it's dual graph. Then we obtain a homogeneous system of linear equations from the $2$-dimensional CW complex in the first homology group of the complement of the dual graph. By checking that the homogeneous system of linear equations does not have an integral solution, we show that some $2$-dimensional CW complexes cannot be embedded into the 3-sphere.
We characterize those unions of embedded disjoint circles in the 2-sphere which can be the multiple point set of a generic immersion of the 2-sphere into 3-dimensional space in terms of the interlacement of the given circles. Our result is the one higher dimensional analogue of Rosenstiehl's characterization of words being Gauss codes of self-crossing plane curves. Our proof uses a result of Lippner and we further generalize the ideas of Fraysseix and Ossona de Mendez, which leads us to directed interlacement graphs of paired trees and their local complementation.
In this paper, we study punctured spheres in two dimensional ball quotient compactifications $(X, D)$. For example, we show that smooth toroidal compactifications of ball quotients cannot contain properly holomorphically embedded $3$-punctured spheres. We also use totally geodesic punctured spheres to prove ampleness of $K_X + αD$ for $α\in (\frac{1}{4}, 1)$, giving a sharp version of a theorem of the first author with G. Di Cerbo. Finally, we produce the first examples of bielliptic ball quotient compactifications modeled on the Gaussian integers.
