We consider an embedding of a $2$-dimensional CW complex into the $3$-sphere, and construct it's dual graph. Then we obtain a homogeneous system of linear equations from the $2$-dimensional CW complex in the first homology group of the complement of the dual graph. By checking that the homogeneous system of linear equations does not have an integral solution, we show that some $2$-dimensional CW complexes cannot be embedded into the 3-sphere.
The vanishing of Van Kampen's obstruction is known to be necessary and sufficient for embeddability of a simplicial n-complex into $R^{2n}$ for $n\neq 2$, and it was recently shown to be incomplete for $n=2$. We use algebraic-topological invariants of four-manifolds with boundary to introduce a sequence of higher embedding obstructions for a class of 2-complexes in $R^4$.
We give examples of finite, simplicial $2$-complexes that do not PL embed in $\mathbb{R}^4$ and exhibit, for each such complex, a family of PL immersions into $\mathbb{R}^4$ that hide the obstruction to embedding in "higher and higher order Milnor invariants". In addition, we show that the embedding obstructions defined by Krushkal in [8] vanish for our examples. We also answer a question in a paper of Avramidi-Okun-Schreve.
This paper is the last paper in a series of five papers. Building on earlier papers in this series, we prove an analogue of Kuratowski's characterisation of graph planarity for three dimensions. More precisely, a simply connected 2-dimensional simplicial complex embeds in 3-space if and only if it has no obstruction from an explicit list of obstructions. This list of obstructions is finite except for one infinite family.
An important "stability" theorem in shape theory, due to D.A. Edwards and R. Geoghegan, characterizes those compacta having the same shape as a finite CW complex. In this note we present straightforward and self-contained proof of that theorem.
We examine surgery on a knot in $S^3$ to determine surgery obstructions to Seifert fibered integral homology spheres. We find such surgery obstructions using Heegaard Floer, Knot Floer homology and the mapping cone formula for computing Heegaard Floer homology of surgery on a knot. Here however, we take a different approach and use the number of singular fibers of a Seifert fibered integral homology sphere, which is the toroidal structure, to find obstructions. This approach allows us to show that genus one knots cannot yield Seifert fibered integral homology spheres with six or more singular …
We study $d$-dimensional simplicial complexes that are PL embeddable in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$. It is shown that such a complex must satisfy a certain homological condition. The existence of this obstruction allows us to provide a systematic approach to deriving upper bounds for the number of top-dimensional faces of such complexes, particularly in low dimensions.
Auckly gave two examples of irreducible integer homology spheres (one toroidal and one hyperbolic) which are not surgery on a knot in the three-sphere. Using Heegaard Floer homology, the authors and Karakurt provided infinitely many small Seifert fibered examples. In this note, we extend those results to give infinitely many hyperbolic examples, as well as infinitely many examples with arbitrary JSJ decomposition.
This paper gives a new obstruction for ribbon-move equivalence of 2-knots. Let $K$ and $K'$ be 2-knots. Let $K$ and $K'$ are ribbon-move equivalent. One corollary to our main theorem is as follows. A 2-dimensional fibered knot whose fiber is the punctured 3-dimensional torus is not ribbon-move equivalent to any 2-dimensional knot whose Seifert hypersurface is a punctured homology sphere.
We improve the bound on Kühnel's problem to determine the smallest $n$ such that the $k$-skeleton of an $n$-simplex $Δ_n^{(k)}$ does not embed into a compact PL $2k$-manifold $M$ by showing that if $Δ_n^{(k)}$ embeds into $M$, then $n\leq (2k+1)+(k+1)β_k(M;\mathbb Z_2)$. As a consequence we obtain improved Radon and Helly type results for set systems in such manifolds. Our main tool is a new description of an obstruction for embeddability of a $k$-complex $K$ into a compact PL $2k$-manifold $M$ via the intersection form on $M$. In our approach we need that for every map $f\colon K\to M$ the re…
Using Taubes' periodic ends theorem, Auckly gave examples of toroidal and hyperbolic irreducible integer homology spheres which are not surgery on a knot in the three-sphere. We give an obstruction to a homology sphere being surgery on a knot coming from Heegaard Floer homology. This is used to construct infinitely many small Seifert fibered examples.
We show that if a Heegaard splitting is obtained by gluing a splitting of Hempel distance at least 4 and the genus-1 splitting of $S^2 \times S^1$, then the Goeritz group of the splitting is finitely generated. To show this, we first provide a sufficient condition for a full subcomplex of the arc complex for a compact orientable surface to be contractible, which generalizes the result by Hatcher that the arc complexes are contractible. We then construct infinitely many Heegaard splittings, including the above-mentioned Heegaard splitting, for which suitably defined complexes of Haken spheres a…
Sphere-bases are constructed for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vector space formed by the $k$-dimensional subcomplexes, of $n$-simplex (or $n$-cube), for which every $(k{-}1)$-face is contained in a positive even number of $k$-cells; addition is symmetric difference of the corresponding sets of $k$-cells. The bases consist of the boundaries of an algorithmically-specified family of $k{+}1$-simplexes or $k{+}1$-cubes. Geometric properties of these bases are investigated.
With any (open or closed) cover of a space T we associate certain homotopy classes of maps T into n-spheres. These homotopy invariants can be considered as obstructions for extensions of covers of a subspace A to a space X. We using these obstructions for generalizations of the classic KKM (Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiewicz) and Sperner lemmas. In particular, we show that in the case when A is a k-sphere and X is a (k+1)-disk there exist KKM type lemmas for covers by n+2 sets if and only if the k-homotopy group of n-sphere is not zero.
Given a genus-$g$ Heegaard splitting of the $3$-sphere with $g \ge 3$, we show that the primitive disk complex for the splitting is not weakly closed under disk surgery operation. That is, there exist two primitive disks in one of the handlebodies of the splitting such that any disk surgery on one along the other one yields no primitive disks.
The SU(3)-Casson invariant for integral homology 3-spheres as studied by Boden-Herald possesses a 'spectral flow obstruction' to being an integer valued invariant which depends only on the non-degenerate (perturbed) moduli space of flat SU(3)-connections. This obstruction is the non-trivial spectral flow of a family of twisted signature operators in 3-dimensions. The parallel U(2)-Seiberg-Witten construction also has an obstruction but from the non-trivial spectral flow of a family of twisted Dirac operators. By taking the SU(3)-flat and U(2)-Seiberg-Witten equations simultaneously the obstruc…
A well-known theorem of Whitney states that a 3-connected planar graph admits an essentially unique embedding into the 2-sphere. We prove a 3-dimensional analogue: a simply-connected $2$-complex every link graph of which is 3-connected admits an essentially unique locally flat embedding into the 3-sphere, if it admits one at all. This can be thought of as a generalisation of the 3-dimensional Schoenflies theorem.
A subcomplex $X\leq \mathcal{C}$ of a simplicial complex is strongly rigid if every locally injective, simplicial map $X\to\mathcal{C}$ is the restriction of a unique automorphism of $\mathcal{C}$. Aramayona and the second author proved that the curve complex of an orientable surface can be exhausted by finite strongly rigid sets. The Hatcher sphere complex is an analog of the curve complex for isotopy classes of essential spheres in a connect sum of $n$ copies of $S^1\times S^2$. We show that there is an exhaustion of the sphere complex by finite strongly rigid sets for all $n\ge 3$ and that …
In this paper we show that the cohomology of a connected CW complex is periodic if and only if it is the base space of an orientable spherical fibration with total space that is homotopically finite dimensional. As applications we characterize those discrete groups that act freely and properly on a cartesian product of euclidean space and a sphere; we construct non-standard free actions of rank two simple groups on finite complexes Y homotopy equivalent to a product of two spheres and we prove that a finite p-group P acts freely on such a complex if and only if it does not contain a subgroup i…
An obstruction theory for representing homotopy classes of surfaces in 4-manifolds by immersions with pairwise disjoint images is developed, using the theory of non-repeating Whitney towers. The accompanying higher-order intersection invariants provide a geometric generalization of Milnor's link-homotopy invariants, and can give the complete obstruction to pulling apart 2-spheres in certain families of 4-manifolds. It is also shown that in an arbitrary simply connected 4-manifold any number of parallel copies of an immersed surface with vanishing self-intersection number can be pulled apart, a…
Let $S_0$ and $S_1$ be two homotopic, oriented 2-spheres embedded in an orientable 4-manifold $X$. After discussing several operations for modifying an immersion of a 3-manifold into a 5-manifold, we discuss the Freedman--Quinn (fq) and Stong (stong) concordance obstructions. When these are defined for the pair $S_0,S_1$, they are defined in terms of the self-intersection set of a regular homotopy from $S_0$ to $S_1$. When $S_0$ has an immersed dual sphere, we see that under some mild topological conditions on $X$, the invariants fq and stong are a complete set of concordance obstructions. Thi…
A knot in the 3-sphere is called doubly slice if it is a slice of an unknotted 2-sphere in the 4-sphere. We give a bi-sequence of new obstructions for a knot being doubly slice. We construct it following the idea of Cochran-Orr-Teichner's filtration of the classical knot concordance group. This yields a bi-filtration of the monoid of knots (under the connected sum operation) indexed by pairs of half integers. Doubly slice knots lie in the intersection of this bi-filtration. We construct examples of knots which illustrate non-triviality of this bi-filtration at all levels. In particular, these …
Concerns decompositions of smooth 4-manifolds as the union of two handlebodies, each with handles of index <=2 (``Heegard'' decompositions).Sample result: Two 2-complexes are (up to 2-deformation) dual spines of a Heegard decomposition of the 4-sphere if and only if they satisfy the conclusions of the Alexander-Lefshetz duality theorem ($H_1K\simeq H^2L$ and $H_2K\simeq H^1L$).
We provide a new obstruction for a rational homology 3-sphere to arise by Dehn surgery on a given knot in the 3-sphere. The obstruction takes the form of an inequality involving the genus of the knot, the surgery coefficient, and a count of L-structures on the 3-manifold, that is spin-c structures with the simplest possible associated Heegaard Floer group. Applications include an obstruction for two framed knots to yield the same 3-manifold, an obstruction that is particularly effective when working with families of framed knots. We introduce the rational and integral Dehn surgery genera for a…
The Powell Conjecture offers a finite generating set for the genus $g$ Goeritz group, the group of automorphisms of $S^3$ that preserve a genus $g$ Heegaard surface $Σ_g$, generalizing a classical result of Goeritz in the case $g=2$. We study the relationship between the Powell Conjecture and the reducing sphere complex $\mathcal{R}(Σ_g)$, the subcomplex of the curve complex $\mathcal{C}(Σ_g)$ spanned by the reducing curves for the Heegaard splitting. We prove that the Powell Conjecture is true if and only if $\mathcal{R}(Σ_g)$ is connected. Additionally, we show that reducing curves that meet…
A manifold which admits a reducible genus-$2$ Heegaard splitting is one of the $3$-sphere, $S^2 \times S^1$, lens spaces or their connected sums. For each of those splittings, the complex of Haken spheres is defined. When the manifold is the $3$-sphere, $S^2 \times S^1$ or the connected sum whose summands are lens spaces or $S^2 \times S^1$, the combinatorial structure of the complex has been studied by several authors. In particular, it was shown that those complexes are all contractible. In this work, we study the remaining cases, that is, when the manifolds are lens spaces. We give a precis…
This is the beginning of an obstruction theory for deciding whether a map f:S^2 --> X^4 is homotopic to a topologically flat embedding, in the presence of fundamental group and in the absence of dual spheres. The first obstruction is Wall's self-intersection number mu(f) which tells the whole story in higher dimensions. Our second order obstruction tau(f) is defined if mu(f) vanishes and has formally very similar properties, except that it lies in a quotient of the group ring of two copies of pi_1(X) modulo S_3-symmetry (rather then just one copy modulo S_3-symmetry). It generalizes to the non…
A map $f: K \to \mathbb{R}^d$ of a simplicial complex is an almost embedding if $f(σ) \cap f(τ) = \varnothing$ whenever $σ, τ$ are disjoint simplices of $K$. Fix integers $d,k \geqslant 2$ such that $k+2 \leqslant d \leqslant\frac{3k}2+1$. Assuming that the "preimage of a cycle is a cycle" we prove $\mathbf{NP}$-hardness of the algorithmic problem of recognition of almost embeddability of finite $k$-dimensional complexes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Assuming that $\mathbf{P} \ne \mathbf{NP}$ (and that the "preimage of a cycle is a cycle") we prove that the embedding obstruction is incomplete for $k$-dim…
We construct an obstruction for the existence of embeddings of homology $3$-sphere into homology $S^3\times S^1$ under some cohomological condition. The obstruction is defined as an element in the filtered version of the instanton Floer cohomology due to R.Fintushel-R.Stern. We make use of the $\mathbb{Z}$-fold covering space of homology $S^3\times S^1$ and the instantons on it.
Using the Heegaard Floer homology of Ozsvath and Szabo we investigate obstructions to definite intersection pairings bounded by rational homology spheres. As an application we obtain new lower bounds for the four-ball genus of Montesinos links.
Let EMBED(k,d) be the following algorithmic problem: Given a finite simplicial complex K of dimension at most k, does there exist a (piecewise linear) embedding of K into R^d? Known results easily imply polynomiality of EMBED(k,2) (k=1,2; the case k=1, d=2 is graph planarity) and of EMBED(k,2k) for all k>2 (even if k is not considered fixed). We observe that the celebrated result of Novikov on the algorithmic unsolvability of recognizing the 5-sphere implies that EMBED(d,d) and EMBED(d-1,d) are undecidable for each d>4. Our main result is NP-hardness of EMBED(2,4) and, more generally, of EMBED…
Delaunay has shown that the Delaunay complex of a finite set of points $P$ of Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^m$ triangulates the convex hull of $P$, provided that $P$ satisfies a mild genericity property. Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay complexes can be defined for arbitrary Riemannian manifolds. However, Delaunay's genericity assumption no longer guarantees that the Delaunay complex will yield a triangulation; stronger assumptions on $P$ are required. A natural one is to assume that $P$ is sufficiently dense. Although results in this direction have been claimed, we show that sample density alone i…
