We prove global existence of solutions to multiple speed, Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities satisfying the null condition in the exterior of compact obstacles. This extends the result of our previous paper by allowing general higher order terms. In the currect setting, these terms are much more difficult to handle than for the free wave equation, and we do so using an analog of a pointwise estimate due to Kubota and Yokoyama.
We prove the existence of the modified wave operators for a scalar quasilinear wave equation satisfying the weak null condition. This is accomplished in three steps. First, we derive a new reduced asymptotic system for the quasilinear wave equation by modifying Hörmander's method. Next, we construct an approximate solution, by solving our new reduced system given some scattering data at infinite time. Finally, we prove that the quasilinear wave equation has a global solution which agrees with the approximate solution at infinite time.
The authors show that bilinear estimates for null forms hold for Dirichlet-wave equations outside of convex obstacle. This generalizes results for the Euclidean case of Klainerman and Machedon, and of Sogge for the variable coefficient boundaryless case. The estimates are used to prove a local existence theorem for semilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition.
We are interested in the three-dimensional quasilinear wave equations with null condition. Global existence and pointwise decay for this model have been proved in the celebrated works of Klainerman \cite{Klainerman86} and Christodoulou \cite{Christodoulou86} for small smooth initial data. In this work, we illustrate the precise pointwise asymptotic behavior of the solutions for initial data posed on a hyperboloid and show that the decay rate $v^{-1}u^{-1}$ is optimal for a generic set of initial data.
We explore the global existence of solutions to systems of quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition when the initial data are sufficiently small. We adapt an approach of Keel, Smith, and Sogge, which relies on integrated local energy estimates and a weighted Sobolev estimate that yields decay in $|x|$, by using the $r^p$-weighted local energy estimates of Dafermos and Rodnianski. One advantage of this approach is that all time-dependent vector fields can be avoided and the proof can be readily adapted to address wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles.
In this paper, we show that one-dimension systems of quasilinear wave equations with null conditions admit global classical solutions for small initial data. This result extends Luli, Yang and Yu's seminal work [G. Luli, S. Yang, P. Yu, On one-dimension semi-linear wave equations with null conditions, Adv. Math.329 (2018) 174-188] from the semilinear case to the quasilinear case. Furthermore, we also prove that the global solution is asymptotically free in the energy sense. In order to achieve these goals, we will employ Luli, Yang and Yu's weighted energy estimates with positive weights, intr…
We consider a class of quasilinear wave equations in $3+1$ space-time dimensions that satisfy the "weak null condition" as defined by Lindblad and Rodnianski \cite{LR1}, and study the large time behavior of solutions to the Cauchy problem. The prototype for the class of equations considered is $-\partial_t^2 u + (1+u) Δu = 0$. Global solutions for such equations have been constructed by Lindblad \cite{Lindblad1,Lindblad2} and Alinhac \cite{Alinhac1}. Our main results are the derivation of a precise asymptotic system with good error bounds, and a detailed description of the behavior of solution…
We consider the two-dimensional quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities. We introduce a new class of null forms and prove uniform boundedness of the highest order norm of the solution for all time. This class of null forms include several prototypical strong null conditions as special cases. To handle the critical decay near the light cone we inflate the nonlinearity through a new normal form type transformation which is based on a deep cancelation between the tangential and normal derivatives with respect to the light cone. Our proof does not employ the Lorentz boost and can …
In this paper we prove global existence for certain multispeed Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities outside of obstacles. We assume the natural null condition for systems of quasilinear wave equations with multiple speeds. The null condition only puts restrictions on the self-interactions of each wave family. We use the method of commuting vector fields and weighted space-time $L^2$ estimates.
We establish global existence in 3+1 dimensions of small-amplitude solutions of quasilinear Dirichlet-wave equations satisfying the null condition outside of star-shapped obstacles.
We consider the two-dimensional quasilinear wave equations with standard null-form type quadratic nonlinearities. We prove global wellposedness without using the Lorentz boost vector fields.
We prove global existence for quasilinear wave equations outside of a wide class of obstacles. The obstacles may contain trapped hyperbolic rays as long as there is local exponential energy decay for the associated linear wave equation. Thus, we can handle all non-trapping obstacles. We are also able to handle non-diagonal systems satisfying the appropriate null condition.
For the 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(\nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients independent of the solution $u$, a blowup result for small data solutions has been established in [1,2] provided that the null condition does not hold and a generic nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is fulfilled. In this paper, we are concerned with the more general 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients that depend simultaneously on $u$ and $\nabla u$. When the null condition does not hold an…

A combination of some weighted energy estimates is applied for the Cauchy problem of quasilinear wave equations with the standard null conditions in three spatial dimensions. Alternative proofs for global solutions are shown including the exterior domain problems.
The paper is devoted to investigating long time behavior of smooth small data solutions to 3-D quasilinear wave equations outside of compact convex obstacles with Neumann boundary conditions.
A key feature of $(1+1)$-dimensional nonlinear wave equations is that they admit left or right traveling waves, under appropriate algebraic conditions on the nonlinearities. In this paper, we prove global stability of such traveling wave solutions for $(1+1)$-dimensional systems of nonlinear wave equations, given a certain asymptotic null condition and sufficient decay for the traveling wave. We first consider semilinear systems as a simpler model problem; we then proceed to treat more general quasilinear systems.
We consider the problem of small data global existence for quasilinear wave equations with null condition on a class of Lorentzian manifolds $(\mathbb{R}^{3+1}, g)$ with \textbf{time dependent} inhomogeneous metric. We show that sufficiently small data give rise to a unique global solution for metric which is merely $C^1$ close to the Minkowski metric inside some large cylinder $\{\left.(t, x)\right||x|\leq R\}$ and approaches the Minkowski metric weakly as $|x|\rightarrow \infty$. Based on this result, we give weak but sufficient conditions on a given large solution of quasilinear wave equati…
In the significant work of [2], Alinhac proved the global existence of small solutions for 2D quasilinear wave equations under the null conditions. The proof heavily relies on the fact that the initial data have compact support [22]. Whether this constraint can be removed or not is still unclear. In this paper, for fully nonlinear wave equations under the null conditions, we prove the global well-posedness for small initial data without compact support. Moreover, we apply our result to a class of quasilinear wave equations.
We prove the global existence of the small solutions to the Cauchy problem for quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition on $(R^3, g)$, where the metric $g$ is a small perturbation of the flat metric and approaches the Euclidean metric like $(1+|x|)^{-a}$ with $a>1$. Global and almost global existence for systems without the null condition are also discussed for certain small time-dependent perturbations of the flat metric in the appendix.
We consider the finite-time stabilization of homogeneous quasilinear hyperbolic systems with one side controls and with nonlinear boundary condition at the other side. We present time-independent feedbacks leading to the finite-time stabilization in any time larger than the optimal time for the null controllability of the linearized system if the initial condition is sufficiently small. One of the key technical points is to establish the local well-posedness of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with nonlinear, non-local boundary conditions.
We provide a proof of global existence of solutions to quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition in certain exterior domains. In particular, our proof does not require estimation of the fundamental solution for the free wave equation. We instead rely upon a class of Keel-Smith-Sogge estimates for the perturbed wave equation. Using this, a notable simplification is made as compared to previous works concerning wave equations in exterior domains: one no longer needs to distinguish the scaling vector field from the other admissible vector fields.
Alinhac solved a long-standing open problem in 2001 and established that quasilinear wave equations in two space dimensions with quadratic null nonlinearities admit global-in-time solutions, provided that the initial data are compactly supported and sufficiently small in Sobolev norm. In this work, Alinhac obtained an upper bound with polynomial growth in time for the top-order energy of the solutions. A natural question then arises whether the time-growth is a true phenomena, despite the possible conservation of basic energy. Analogous problems are also of central importance for Schrödinger e…
We deal with the ``nonrelativistic limit'', i.e. the limit c to infinity, where c is the speed of light, of the nonlinear PDE system obtained by coupling the Dirac equation for a 4-spinor to the Maxwell equations for the self-consistent field created by the ``moving charge'' of the spinor. This limit, sometimes also called ``Post-Newtonian'' limit, yields a Schroedinger-Poisson system, where the spin and the magnetic field no longer appear. However, our splitting of the 4-spinor into two 2-spinors preserves the symmetry of "electrons'' and "positrons''; the latter obeying a Schroedinger equati…
In this manuscript we first give the explicit variational structure of the nonlinear elastic waves for isotropic, homogeneous, hyperelastic materials in 2-D. Based on this variational structure, we suggest a null condition which is a kind of structural condition on the nonlinearity in order to stop the formation of finite time singularities of local smooth solutions. In the radial symmetric case, inspired by Alinhac's work [3] on 2-D quasilinear wave equations, we show that such null condition can ensure the globalexistence of smooth solutions with small initial data.
In his 2007 monograph, D. Christodoulou proved a breakthrough result giving a detailed description of the formation of shocks in solutions to the relativistic Euler equations in three spatial dimensions. He assumed that the data have small $H^N$ norm, where $N$ is a sufficiently large integer. To deduce the shock formation, he also assumed that the data verify a signed integral inequality. In the present monograph, we extend Christodoulou's framework and use it to prove that shock singularities often develop in initially small, regular solutions to two important classes of quasilinear wave equ…
This paper is concerned with the small smooth data problem for the 3-D nonlinear wave equation $\partial_t^2u-\left (1+u+\p_t u\right)Δu=0$. This equation is prototypical of the more general equation $\dsize\sum_{i,j=0}^3g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$, where $x_0=t$ and $g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)=c_{ij}+d_{ij}u+\dsize\sum_{k=0}^3e_{ij}^k\partial_ku+O(|u|^2+|\nabla u|^2)$ are smooth functions of their arguments, with $c_{ij}, d_{ij}$ and $e_{ij}^k$ being constants, and $d_{ij}\neq0$ for some $(i,j)$; moreover, $\dsize\sum_{i,j,k=0}^3e_{ij}^k(\partial_ku)\p_{ij} u$ does not fulfill the null cond…
In his 2007 monograph, D. Christodoulou proved a remarkable result giving a detailed description of shock formation, for small $H^s$-initial conditions ($s$ sufficiently large), in solutions to the relativistic Euler equations in three space dimensions. His work provided a significant advancement over a large body of prior work concerning the long-time behavior of solutions to higher-dimensional quasilinear wave equations, initiated by F. John in the mid 1970's and continued by S. Klainerman, T. Sideris, L. Hörmander, H. Lindblad, S. Alinhac, and others. Our goal in this paper is to give an ov…
The paper is devoted to the study of shock formation of the 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equation \begin{equation}\label{Main Equation} - \big(1+3G^{\prime\prime}(0) (\partial_tϕ)^2\big)\partial^2_t ϕ+Δϕ=0,\tag{\textbf{$\star$}} \end{equation} where $G^{\prime\prime}(0)$ is a non-zero constant. We will exhibit a family of smooth initial data and show that the foliation of the incoming characteristic hypersurfaces collapses. Similar to 1-dimensional conservational laws, we refer this specific type breakdown of smooth solutions as shock formation. Since $(\star)$ satisfies the classical null c…
We consider the Cauchy problem of systems of quasilinear wave equations in 2-dimensional space. We assume that the propagation speeds are distinct and that the nonlinearities contain quadratic and cubic terms of the first and second order derivatives of the solution. We know that if the all quadratic and cubic terms of nonlinearities satisfy $Strong$ $Null$-$condition$, then there exists a global solution for sufficiently small initial data. In this paper, we study about the lifespan of the smooth solution, when the cubic terms in the quasi-linear nonlinearities do not satisfy the Strong null-…
We give a short proof of the existence of a small piece of null infinity for $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes evolving from asymptotically flat initial data as solutions of the Einstein vacuum equations. We introduce a modification of the standard wave coordinate gauge in which all non-physical metric degrees of freedom have strong decay at null infinity. Using a formulation of the gauge-fixed Einstein vacuum equations which implements constraint damping, we establish this strong decay regardless of the validity of the constraint equations. On a technical level, we use notions from geometric sin…
Two global stability theorems for small-data $3D$ compressible Euler solutions: Unique maximal globally hyperbolic developments with gradient-blowup & smooth global existence in the entire spacetime

We prove global existence for Einstein's equations with a charged scalar field for initial conditions sufficiently close to the Minkowski spacetime without matter. The proof relies on generalized wave coordinates adapted to the outgoing Schwarzschild light cones and the estimates for the massless Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system, on the background of metrics asymptotically approaching Schwarzschild at null infinity in such coordinates, by Kauffman. The generalized wave coordinates are obtained from a change of variables, introduced by Lindblad, to asymptotically Schwarzschild coordinates at null in…
In this paper we prove the nonlinear stability of Minkowski space-time with a translation Killing field. In the presence of such a symmetry, the 3 + 1 vacuum Einstein equations reduce to the 2 + 1 Einstein equations with a scalar field. We work in generalised wave coordinates. In this gauge Einstein equations can be written as a system of quasilinear quadratic wave equations. The main difficulty in this paper is due to the weaker decay of free solutions to the wave equation in 2 dimensions, compared to 3 dimensions. This weak decay seems to be a deterrent for proving a stability result in the …
This is the main paper in a sequence in which we give a complete proof of the bounded $L^2$ curvature conjecture. More precisely we show that the time of existence of a classical solution to the Einstein-vacuum equations depends only on the $L^2$-norm of the curvature and a lower bound on the volume radius of the corresponding initial data set. We note that though the result is not optimal with respect to the standard scaling of the Einstein equations, it is nevertheless critical with respect to its causal geometry. Indeed, $L^2$ bounds on the curvature is the minimum requirement necessary to …
We study classical solutions of one dimensional rotating shallow water system which plays an important role in geophysical fluid dynamics. The main results contain two contrasting aspects. First, when the solution crosses certain threshold, we prove finite-time singularity formation for the classical solutions by studying the weighted gradients of Riemann invariants and utilizing conservation of physical energy. In fact, the singularity formation will take place for a large class of ${C}^1$ initial data whose gradients and physical energy can be arbitrarily small and higher order derivatives s…
