In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the Hilbert series and Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring.
In this paper, we estimate the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of the (extended) Rees algebras in terms of some invariants of the base ring. Also, we give an explicit formula for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities of Rees algebras over Veronese subrings.
Let $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a sequence of integers such that its generating series satisfies $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_nt^n = \frac{h(t)}{(1-t)^d}$ for some polynomial $h(t)$. For any $r \geq 1$ we study the coefficient sequence of the numerator polynomial $h_0(a^{<r >}) +...+ h_{λ'}(a^{<r >}) t^{λ'}$ of the $r$\textsuperscript{th} Veronese series $a^{<r >}(t) = \sum_{n \geq 0} a_{nr} t^n$. Under mild hypothesis we show that the vector of successive differences of this sequence up to the $\lfloor \frac{d}{2} \rfloor$\textsuperscript{th} entry is the $f$-vector of a simplicial complex for large $r$. In …
We study the minimal free resolution of the Veronese modules of the polynomial ring in n variables, by giving a formula for the Betti numbers in terms of the reduced homology of some skeleton of a simplicial complex. We characterize when they are Cohen-Macaulay and we give a sufficient condition for the linearity of their minimal free resolution. We also conjecture that in 2 variables the Veronese modules have always pure resolutions. In addition, we give a closed formula for their Hilbert series. As an application of our results, we calculate the complete Betti diagrams of the Veronese subrin…
We study real sequences $\{a_{n}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ that eventually agree with a polynomial. We show that if the numerator polynomial of its rational generating series is of degree $s$ and has only nonnegative coefficients, then the numerator polynomial of the subsequence $\{ a_{rn+i}\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$, $0\leq i<r$, has only nonpositive, real roots for all $r\geq s-i$. We apply our results to combinatorially positive valuations on polytopes and to Hilbert functions of Veronese submodules of graded Cohen-Macaulay algebras. In particular, we prove that the Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomial of the…
Let $(a_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a sequence of complex numbers such that its generating series satisfies $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_nt^n = \frac{h(t)}{(1-t)^d}$ for some polynomial $h(t)$. For any $r \geq 1$ we study the transformation of the coefficient series of $h(t)$ to that of $h^{< r >}(t)$ where $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_{nr} t^n = \frac{h^{< r >}(t)}{(1-t)^d}$. We give a precise description of this transformation and show that under some natural mild hypotheses the roots of $h^{< r >}(t)$ converge when $r$ goes to infinity. In particular, this holds if $\sum_{n \geq 0} a_n t^n$ is the Hilbert series of a st…
Absolutely Koszul algebras are a class of rings over which any finite graded module has a rational Poincaré series. We provide a criterion to detect non-absolutely Koszul rings. Combining the criterion with machine computations, we identify large families of Veronese subrings and Segre products of polynomial rings which are not absolutely Koszul. In particular, we classify completely the absolutely Koszul algebras among Segre products of polynomial rings, at least in characteristic $0$.
In a recent preprint, Ilse Fischer and Martina Kubitzke, proved the bilinearity of the Segre transform under some restricted hypothesis, motivated by their results we show in this paper the bilinearity of the Segre transform in general. We apply these results to compute the postulation number of a series. Our second application is motivated by the paper of David A. Cox, and Evgeny Materov (2009), where is computed the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Segre Veronese embedding, we can extend partially their result and compute the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the Segre product of Cohen-…

Using Macaulay's correspondence we study the family of Artinian Gorenstein local algebras with fixed symmetric Hilbert function decomposition. As an application we give a new lower bound for cactus varieties of the third Veronese embedding. We discuss the case of cubic surfaces, where interesting phenomena occur.
In [7] we obtained a formula for the Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring by relating it to the Hilbert depth of powers of the irrelevant maximal ideal. In this paper, we prove that these two Hilbert depth formulas are equivalent to each other. Our result reveals that there is a strong connection between these two classes of seemingly unrelated monomial ideals. We conjecture that their Stanley depths are equivalent as well.
We study the minimal bigraded free resolution of an ideal with three generators of the same bidegree, contained in the bihomogeneous maximal ideal $ \langle s,t\rangle \cap \langle u,v \rangle$ of the bigraded ring K[s,t;u,v]. Our analysis involves tools from algebraic geometry (Segre-Veronese varieties), classical commutative algebra (Buchsbaum-Eisenbud criteria for exactness, Hilbert-Burch theorem), and homological algebra (Koszul homology, spectral sequences). We treat in detail the case in which the bidegree is (1,n). We connect our work to a conjecture of Fröberg-Lundqvist on bigraded Hil…
We study the linear map sending the numerator of the rational function representing the Hilbert series of a module to that of its r-th Veronese submodule. We show that the asymptotic behaviour as r tends to infinity depends on the multidegree of the module and the underlying positively multigraded polynomial ring. More importantly, we give a polyhedral description for the asymptotic polynomial and prove that the coefficients are log-concave. In particular, we extend some results by Beck-Stapledon and Diaconis-Fulman beyond the standard graded situation.
We analyse the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of $d$ points on $\mathbb{P}^n$ i.e. the open subscheme parameterising zero-dimensional Gorenstein subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$. We give new sufficient criteria for smoothability and smoothness of points of the Gorenstein locus. In particular we prove that this locus is irreducible when $d\leq 13$ and find its components when $d = 14$. The proof is relatively self-contained and it does not rely on a computer algebra system. As a by--product, we give equations of the fourth secant variety to the $d$-th Veronese reembedding of $…
We give an explicit formula for the Hilbert Series of an algebra defined by a linearly presented, standard graded, residual intersection of a grade three Gorenstein ideal.
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ denote the corresponding binomial edge ideal in the polynomial ring $S = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n].$ In this article, we compute the Hilbert series of binomial edge ideal of decomposable graphs in terms of Hilbert series of its indecomposable subgraphs. Also, we compute the Hilbert series of binomial edge ideal of join of two graphs and as a consequence we obtain the Hilbert series of complete $k$-partite graph, fan graph, multi-fan graph and wheel graph.
In this expository style of writing I will give an introduction of Gröbner bases and compute it for some algebras and then show how to use it to compute Hilbert series for algebras from chains.
The equivariant Hilbert series of an ideal generated by an orbit of a monomial under the action of the monoid $\mbox{Inc}(\mathbb{N})$ of strictly increasing functions is determined. This is used to find the dimension and degree of such an ideal. The result also suggests that the description of the denominator of an equivariant Hilbert series of an arbitrary $\mbox{Inc}(\mathbb{N})$-invariant ideal as given by Nagel and Römer is rather efficient.
We use the results of our paper "p-Fractals and power series--I" (Journal of Algebra 280, 2004, pp. 505--536) to prove the rationality of the Hilbert-Kunz series of a large family of power series, including those of the form \sum_i f_i(x_i,y_i), where the f_i(x_i,y_i) are power series with coefficients in a finite field. The methods are effective, as we illustrate with examples. In the final section, which can be read independently of the others, we obtain more precise results for the Hilbert-Kunz function of the 3 variable power series z^D-h(x,y).
We give conjectures on the "asymptotic" behaviour of the Hilbert series of (quotients by) generic ideals in the exterior algebra, as the number of variables tend to infinity. Our conjectures are supported by extensive computer calculations.

We give an explicit formula for the Hilbert-Poincaré series of the parity binomial edge ideal of a complete graph $K_{n}$ or equivalently for the ideal generated by all $2\times 2$-permanents of a $2\times n$-matrix. It follows that the depth and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of these ideals are independent of $n$.
We determine the class of Hilbert series H so that if M is a finitely generated zero-dimensional R-graded module with the strong Lefschetz property, then the tensor product of M and k[y]/(y^m) has the strong Lefschetz property for y an indeterminate and all positive integers m if and only if the Hilbert series of M is in H. Given two finite graded R-modules M and N with the strong Lefschetz property, we determine sufficient conditions in order that the tensor product of M and N has the strong Lefschetz property.
There is a longstanding conjecture by Fröberg about the Hilbert series of the ring $R/I$, where $R$ is a polynomial ring, and $I$ an ideal generated by generic forms. We prove this conjecture true in the case when $I$ is generated by a large number of forms, all of the same degree. We also conjecture that an ideal generated by $m$'th powers of forms of degree $d$ gives the same Hilbert series as an ideal generated by generic forms of degree $md$. We verify this in several cases. This also gives a proof of the first conjecture in some new cases.
Let $S_1$ and $S_2$ be two affine semigroups and let $S$ be the gluing of $S_1$ and $S_2$. Several invariants of $S$ are then related to those of $S_1$ and $S_2$; we review some of the most important properties preserved under gluings. The aim of this paper is to prove that this is the case for the Frobenius vector and the Hilbert series. Applications to complete intersection affine semigroups are also given.
Let $R$ be the polynomial ring $K[x_{i,j}]$ where $1 \le i \le r$ and $j \in \mathbb{N}$, and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ stable under the natural action of the infinite symmetric group $S_{\infty}$. Nagel--Römer recently defined a Hilbert series $H_I(s,t)$ of $I$ and proved that it is rational. We give a much shorter proof of this theorem using tools from the theory of formal languages and a simple algorithm that computes the series.
Let $R$ be a positively graded algebra over a field. We say that $R$ is Hilbert-cyclotomic if the numerator of its reduced Hilbert series has all of its roots on the unit circle. Such rings arise naturally in commutative algebra, numerical semigroup theory and Ehrhart theory. If $R$ is standard graded, we prove that, under the additional hypothesis that $R$ is Koszul or has an irreducible $h$-polynomial, Hilbert-cyclotomic algebras coincide with complete intersections. In the Koszul case, this is a consequence of some classical results about the vanishing of deviations of a graded algebra.

We derive the duality relation for the Hilbert series H(d^m;z) of almost symmetric numerical semigroup S(d^m) combining it with its dual H(d^m;z^{-1}). On this basis we establish the bijection between the multiset of degrees of the syzygy terms and the multiset of the gaps F_j, generators d_i and their linear combinations. We present the relations for the sums of the Betti numbers of even and odd indices separately. We apply the duality relation to the simple case of the almost symmetric semigroups of maximal embedding dimension, and give the necessary and efficient conditions for minimal set …
We study the Hilbert function and the Hilbert series of the vertex cover algebra $A(G)$, where $G$ is a Cohen-Macaulay bipartite graph.
We find explicit formulas for the Hilbert series of residual intersections of a scheme in terms of the Hilbert series of its conormal modules. In a previous paper we proved that such formulas should exist. We give applications to the dimension of secant varieties of surfaces and three-folds.
There are several remarks on Hilbert series of finitely presented (f. p.) associative algebras over a field and their modules. First, given an integer $D$, the set of Hilbert series of right-sided ideals with generators and relations of degrees at most $D$ in a f. p. algebra is finite. Second, every f. p. module of linear growth over noetherian or coherent algebra has periodic Hilbert function. Third, every ideal in a Koszul family of ideals (defined in math.AG/0412441) in a f. p. algebra has rational Poincare series.

We compute the reduced Gröbner basis of the toric ideal with respect to a suitable monomial order and we study the Hilbert series of the vertex cover algebra $A(G)$, where $G$ is an unmixed bipartite graph without isolated vertices.
Given an ideal of forms in an algebra (polynomial ring, tensor algebra, exterior algebra, Lie algebra, bigraded polynomial ring), we consider the Hilbert series of the factor ring. We concentrate on the minimal Hilbert series, which is achieved when the forms are generic. In the polynomial ring we also consider the opposite case of maximal series. This is mainly a survey article, but we give a lot of problems and conjectures. The only novel results concern the maximal series in the polynomial ring.
If $I=(f_1,\ldots,f_r)$ is an ideal in $S=k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, and $f_i$ are "general" elements of given degrees, there is a conjecture on the Hilbert series of $S/I$. We are considering the corresponding concepts in bigraded rings.
The vanishing ideal I of a subspace arrangement is an intersection of linear ideals. We give a formula for the Hilbert polynomial of I if the subspaces meet transversally. We also give a formula for the Hilbert series of a product J of the linear ideals without any assumptions on the subspace arrangement. It turns out that the Hilbert series of J is a combinatorial invariant of the subspace arrangement: it only depends on the intersection lattice and the dimension function. The graded Betti numbers of J are determined by the Hilbert series, so they are combinatorial invariants as well. The res…
The Hilbert series of a polarised algebraic variety $(X,D)$ is a powerful invariant that, while it captures some features of the geometry of $(X,D)$ precisely, often cannot recover much information about its singular locus. This work explores the extent to which the Hilbert series of an orbifold del Pezzo surface fails to pin down its singular locus, which provides nonexistence results describing when there are no orbifold del Pezzo surfaces with a given Hilbert series, supplies bounds on the number of singularities on such surfaces, and has applications to the combinatorics of lattice polytop…

In this note, we give examples of formal power series satisfying certain conditions that cannot be realized as Hilbert series of finitely generated modules. This answers to the negative a question raised in a recent article by the second and the third author. On the other hand, we show that the answer is positive after multiplication with a scalar.
Let P be a simple thin polyomino, roughly speaking a polyomino that has no holes and does not contain a square tetromino as a subpolyomino. In this paper, we determine the reduced Hilbert series $h(t)/(1-t)^d$ of K[P] by proving that $h(t)$ is the rook polynomial of P. As an application, we characterize the Gorenstein simple thin polyominoes.
Let (R, m) be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring and I be an m-primary ideal. We introduce ideals of almost minimal mixed multiplicty which are analogues of ideals studied by J. Sally. The main theorem describes the Hilbert series of fiber cones of these ideals.
Toric ideals to hierarchical models are invariant under the action of a product of symmetric groups. Taking the number of factors, say m, into account, we introduce and study invariant filtrations and their equivariant Hilbert series. We present a condition that guarantees that the equivariant Hilbert series is a rational function in m+1 variables with rational coefficients. Furthermore we give explicit formulas for the rational functions with coefficients in a number field and an algorithm for determining the rational functions with rational coefficients. A key is to construct finite automata…
We compute the Hilbert series of the graded algebra of regular functions on a symplectic quotient of a unitary circle representation. Additionally, we elaborate explicit formulas for the lowest coefficients of the Laurent expansion of such a Hilbert series in terms of rational symmetric functions of the weights. Considerable efforts are devoted to including the cases where the weights are degenerate. We find that these Laurent expansions formally resemble Laurent expansions of Hilbert series of graded rings of real invariants of finite subgroups of $\U_n$. Moreover, we prove that certain Laure…

In this paper, we consider the exterior algebra $Λ(W)$ of a polynomial $\mathrm{GL}(n)$-module $W$ and use previously developed methods to determine the Hilbert series of the algebra of invariants $Λ(W)^G$, where $G$ is one of the classical complex subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}(n)$, namely $\mathrm{SL}(n)$, $\mathrm{O}(n)$, $\mathrm{SO}(n)$, or $\mathrm{Sp}(2d)$ (for $n=2d$). Since $Λ(W)^G$ is finite dimensional, we apply the described method to compute a lot of explicit examples. For $Λ(S^3\mathbb{C}^3)^{\mathrm{SL}(3)}$, using the computed Hilbert series, we obtain an explicit set of generators.
A numerical semigroup $S$ is a subset of the non-negative integers containing $0$ that is closed under addition. The Hilbert series of $S$ (a formal power series equal to the sum of terms $t^n$ over all $n \in S$) can be expressed as a rational function in $t$ whose numerator is characterized in terms of the topology of a simplicial complex determined by membership in $S$. In this paper, we obtain analogous rational expressions for the related power series whose coefficient of $t^n$ equals $f(n)$ for one of several semigroup-theoretic invariants $f:S \to \mathbb R$ known to be eventually quasi…
Let $R=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and let $M_{n,t}=(x^{e_1},\ldots, x^{e_n})$ be a monomial ideal of $R$, where $x^{e_i}=x_1^t\ldots x_{i-1}^tx_{i+1}^t\ldots x_n^t$. We study the unmixedness of its integral closure. Furthermore, we compute the Hilbert series of this ideal and we show that this ideal is Freiman.
We present a conjecture about the reduced Hilbert series of the coordinate ring of a simple polyomino in terms of particular arrangements of non-attacking rooks that can be placed on the polyomino. By using a computational approach, we prove that the above conjecture holds for all simple polyominoes up to rank $11$. In addition, we prove that the conjecture holds true for the class of parallelogram polyominoes, by looking at those as simple planar distributive lattices. Finally, we give a combinatorial interpretation of the Gorensteinnes of parallelogram polyominoes.
The denominator of the Hilbert series of a finitely generated R-module M does not always divide the denominator of the Hilbert series of R. For this reason, we define the universal denominator. The universal denominator of a module M is the least common multiple of the denominators of the Hilbert series of all submodules of M. The universal denominator behaves nicely with respect to short exact sequences and tensor products. It also has interesting geometric interpretations. Formulas are given for the universal denominator for rings of invariants. Dixmier gave a conjectural formula for the den…

We compute the Hilbert series of the graded algebra of real regular functions on the symplectic quotient associated to an $\operatorname{SU}_2$-module and give an explicit expression for the first nonzero coefficient of the Laurent expansion of the Hilbert series at $t = 1$. Our expression for the Hilbert series indicates an algorithm to compute it, and we give the output of this algorithm for representations of dimension at most $10$. Along the way, we compute the Hilbert series of the module of covariants of an arbitrary $\operatorname{Sl}_2$- or $\operatorname{SU}_2$-module as well its firs…

In this paper we present a procedure for computing the rational sum of the Hilbert series of a finitely generated monomial right module $N$ over the free associative algebra $K\langle x_1,\ldots,x_n \rangle$. We show that such procedure terminates, that is, the rational sum exists, when all the cyclic submodules decomposing $N$ are annihilated by monomial right ideals whose monomials define regular formal languages. The method is based on the iterative application of the colon right ideal operation to monomial ideals which are given by an eventual infinite basis. By using automata theory, we p…
The present paper studies multiple failure and signature analysis of coherent systems using the theory of monomial ideals. While system reliability has been studied using Hilbert series of monomial ideals, this is not enough to understand in a deeper sense the ideal structure features that reflect the behavior of the system under multiple simultaneous failures and signature. Therefore, we introduce the lcm-filtration of a monomial ideal, and we study the Hilbert series and resolutions of the corresponding ideals. Given a monomial ideal, we explicitly compute the resolutions for all ideals in t…
Sets of zero-dimensional ideals in the polynomial ring $k[x,y]$ that share the same leading term ideal with respect to a given term ordering are known to be affine spaces called Gröbner cells. Conca-Valla and Constantinescu parametrize such Gröbner cells in terms of certain canonical Hilbert-Burch matrices for the lexicographical and degree-lexicographical term orderings, respectively. In this paper, we give a parametrization of $(x,y)$-primary ideals in Gröbner cells which is compatible with the local structure of such ideals. More precisely, we extend previous results to the local setting by…

An appendix outlining some basic facts about degeneracy loci and applications to multiplicity formulae for Pfaffian rings is also included.
In this article we mainly consider the positively Z-graded polynomial ring R=F[X,Y] over an arbitrary field F and Hilbert series of finitely generated graded R-modules. The central result is an arithmetic criterion for such a series to be the Hilbert series of some R-module of positive depth. In the generic case, that is, the degrees of X and Y being coprime, this criterion can be formulated in terms of the numerical semigroup generated by those degrees.
