Let $R$ be a positively graded algebra over a field. We say that $R$ is Hilbert-cyclotomic if the numerator of its reduced Hilbert series has all of its roots on the unit circle. Such rings arise naturally in commutative algebra, numerical semigroup theory and Ehrhart theory. If $R$ is standard graded, we prove that, under the additional hypothesis that $R$ is Koszul or has an irreducible $h$-polynomial, Hilbert-cyclotomic algebras coincide with complete intersections. In the Koszul case, this is a consequence of some classical results about the vanishing of deviations of a graded algebra.
We describe the cone of Hilbert functions of artinian graded modules finitely generated in degree 0 over the polynomial ring R = k[x, y] with the non-standard grading deg(x) = 1 and deg(y) = n, where n is any natural number.
In this paper we give an effective characterization of Hilbert functions and polynomials of standard algebras over an Artinian equicharacteristic local ring; the cohomological properties of such algebras are also studied. We describe algorithms to check the admissibility of a given function or polynomial as a Hilbert function or polynomial, and to produce a standard algebra with a given Hilbert function.
Let M be a finitely generated ZZ-graded module over the standard graded polynomial ring R=K[X_1, ..., X_n] with K a field, and let H_M(t)=Q_M(t)/(1-t)^d be the Hilbert series of M. We introduce the Hilbert regularity of M as the lowest possible value of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for an R-module with Hilbert series H_M. Our main result is an arithmetical description of this invariant which connects the Hilbert regularity of M to the smallest k such that the power series Q_M(1-t)/(1-t)^k has no negative coefficients. Finally we give an algorithm for the computation of the Hilbert regula…
Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over the field $K$, and let $I\subset S$ be a graded ideal. It is shown that the higher iterated Hilbert coefficients of the graded $S$-modules $\Tor_i^S(M,I^k)$ and $\Ext^i_S(M,I^k)$ are polynomial functions in $k$, and an upper bound for their degree is given. These results are derived by considering suitable bigraded modules.
Given a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $(R, {\mathfrak m})$, we study the interplay between the integral closedness -- or even the normality -- of an ${\mathfrak m}$-primary $R$-ideal $I$ and conditions on the Hilbert coefficients of $I$. We relate these properties to the depth of the associated graded ring of $I$.
We give two algorithms for computing the Hilbert depth of a \emph{graded ideal} in the polynomial ring. These algorithms work efficiently for (squarefree) lex ideals. As a consequence, we construct counterexamples to some conjectures made by Shen in \cite{B:Sh2}.
We prove that the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function of a graded module $M$ over a two-dimensional standard graded normal $K$-domain over an algebraically closed field $K$ of prime characteristic $p$ has the form $gHK(M,q)=e_{gHK}(M)q^{2}+γ(q)$, with rational generalized Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity $e_{gHK}(M)$ and a bounded function $γ(q)$. Moreover we prove that if $R$ is a $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra, the limit for $p\rightarrow+\infty$ of the generalized Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity $e_{gHK}^{R_p}(M_p)$ over the fibers $R_p$ exists and it is a rational number.
We show that there exists a saturated graded ideal in a standard graded polynomial ring which has the largest total Betti numbers among all saturated graded ideals for a fixed Hilbert polynomial.
We compute the Hilbert coefficients of a graded module with pure resolution and discuss lower and upper bounds for these coefficients for arbitrary graded modules.
Let $(A,\m)$ be a Noetherian local ring with infinite residue field and let $I$ be an ideal in $A$ and let $F(I) = \oplus_{n \geq 0}I^n/\m I^n$ be the fiber-cone of $I$. We prove certain relations among the Hilbert coefficients of $F(I)$ when the $a$-invariant of the associated graded ring $G(I)$ is negative.
In this paper, we give a way to construct graded filtrations of graded modules. We then apply it to the Sally module, which describes a correction term of the Hilbert function. As a result, we obtain the inequality of the Hilbert coefficients for ideals of reduction number $2$ or $3$.
In this expository paper we present proofs of Grothendieck-Serre Formula for multi-graded algebras and Rees algebras for admissible multi-graded filtrations. As applications, we derive formulas of Sally for postulation number of admissible filtrations and Hilbert coefficients. We also discuss a partial solution of Itoh's conjecture by Kummini and Masuti. We present an alternate proof of Huneke-Ooishi Theorem and a generalisation for multi-graded filtrations.
We introduce the $k$-strong Lefschetz property ($k$-SLP) and the $k$-weak Lefschetz property ($k$-WLP) for graded Artinian $K$-algebras, which are generalizations of the Lefschetz properties. The main results obtained in this paper are as follows: 1. Let $I$ be a graded ideal of $R=K[x_1, x_2, x_3]$ whose quotient ring $R/I$ has the SLP. Then the generic initial ideal of $I$ is the unique almost revlex ideal with the same Hilbert function as $R/I$. 2. Let $I$ be a graded ideal of $R=K[x_1, x_2, ..., x_n]$ whose quotient ring $R/I$ has the $n$-SLP. Suppose that all $k$-th differences of the Hil…
Let $R$ be a polynomial ring over a field and $M= \bigoplus_n M_n$ a finitely generated graded $R$-module, minimally generated by homogeneous elements of degree zero with a graded $R$-minimal free resolution $\mathbf{F}$. A Cohen-Macaulay module $M$ is Gorenstein when the graded resolution is symmetric. We give an upper bound for the first Hilbert coefficient, $e_1$ in terms of the shifts in the graded resolution of $M$. When $M = R/I$, a Gorenstein algebra, this bound agrees with the bound obtained in \cite{ES} in Gorenstein algebras with quasi-pure resolution. We conjecture a similar bound f…
It is known that graded cyclic modules over $S=K[x,y]$ have the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). This is not true for non-cyclic modules over $S$. The purpose of this note is to study which conditions on $S$-modules ensure the WLP. We give an algorithm to test the WLP for graded modules with fixed Hilbert function. In particular, we prove that indecomposable graded modules over $S$ with the Hilbert function $(h_0,h_1)$ have the WLP.
Let S be a finitely generated standard multi-graded algebra over a Noetherian local ring A. This paper first expresses mixed multiplicities of S in term of Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity that explained the mixed multiplicities S as the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicities for quotient modules of S. As an application, we get formulas for the mixed multiplicities of ideals that covers the main result of Trung-Verma 2007 [TV].
Let R denote a two-dimensional normal standard-graded domain over the algebraic closure K of a finite field of characteristic p, and let I denote a homogeneous primary ideal. We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz function of I has the form = e_{HK}(I) q^{2} + g (q) with rational Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity e_{HK}(I) and an eventually periodic function g (q).
In this article we mainly consider the positively Z-graded polynomial ring R=F[X,Y] over an arbitrary field F and Hilbert series of finitely generated graded R-modules. The central result is an arithmetic criterion for such a series to be the Hilbert series of some R-module of positive depth. In the generic case, that is, the degrees of X and Y being coprime, this criterion can be formulated in terms of the numerical semigroup generated by those degrees.
We show that the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity is a rational number for an R_+-primary homogeneous ideal I=(f_1, ..., f_n) in a two-dimensional graded domain R of finite type over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Moreover we give a formula for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity in terms of certain rational numbers coming from the strong Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the syzygy bundle Syz(f_1, . . ., f_n) on the projective curve Y = Proj R.
In this expository paper we survey results that relate Hilbert coefficients of an m-primary ideal I in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring (R, m) with depth of the associated graded ring G(I). Several results in this area follow from two theorems of S. Huckaba and T. Marley. These were proved using homological techniques. We provide simple proofs using superficial sequences.
We describe the graded characters and Hilbert functions of certain graded artinian Gorenstein quotients of the polynomial ring which are also representations of the symmetric group. Specifically, we look at those algebras whose socles are trivial representations and whose principal apolar submodules are generated by the sum of the orbit of a power of a linear form.
In this note, we give examples of formal power series satisfying certain conditions that cannot be realized as Hilbert series of finitely generated modules. This answers to the negative a question raised in a recent article by the second and the third author. On the other hand, we show that the answer is positive after multiplication with a scalar.
We determine the class of Hilbert series H so that if M is a finitely generated zero-dimensional R-graded module with the strong Lefschetz property, then the tensor product of M and k[y]/(y^m) has the strong Lefschetz property for y an indeterminate and all positive integers m if and only if the Hilbert series of M is in H. Given two finite graded R-modules M and N with the strong Lefschetz property, we determine sufficient conditions in order that the tensor product of M and N has the strong Lefschetz property.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring, $I$ an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal of $R$ and $J=(x_1,...,x_d)$ a minimal reduction of $I$. We show that if $J_{d-1}=(x_1,...,x_{d-1})$ and $\sum\limits_{n=1}^\inftyλ{({I^{n+1}\cap J_{d-1}})/({J{I^n} \cap J_{d-1}})=i}$ where i=0,1, then depth $G(I)\geq{d-i-1}$. Moreover, we prove that if $e_2(I) = \sum_{n=2}^\infty (n-1) λ(I^n/JI^{n-1})-2;$ or if $I$ is integrally closed and $e_2(I) = \sum_{n=2}^\infty (n-1)λ({I^{n}}/JI^{n-1})-i$ where $i=3,4$, then $e_1(I) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty λ(I^n / JI^{n-1})-1.$ In addition, we show tha…
Let $R=\bigoplus_{n\ges0}R_n$ be a graded commutative ring generated over a field $K=R_0$ by homogeneous elements $x_1,\dots,x_e$ of positive degrees $d_1,\dots,d_e$. The Hilbert-Serre Theorem shows that for each finite graded $R$--module $M=\bigoplus_{n\in\BZ}M_n$ the {\it Hilbert series\/} $\sum_{n\in\BZ}(\rank_K M_n)t^n$ is the Laurent expansion around $0$ of a rational function $$ H_M(t)=\frac{q_M(t)}{\prod_{i=1}^e(1-t^{d_i})} $$ with $q_M(t)\in\BZ[t,\ti]$. We demonstrate that Laurent expansions $\left[M\right]_z$ of $H_M(t)$ around other points $z$ of the extended complex plane $\overline…
The Hilbert function of standard graded algebras are well understood by Macaulay's theorem and very little is known in the local case, even if we assume that the local ring is a complete intersection. An extension to the power series ring $R$ of the theory of Gröbner bases (w.r.t. local degree orderings) enable us to characterize the Hilbert function of one dimensional quadratic complete intersections $A=R/I$, and we give a structure theorem of the minimal system of generators of $I$ in terms of the Hilbert function. We find several restrictions for the Hilbert function of $A$ in the case that…
We give an explicit formula for the Hilbert Series of an algebra defined by a linearly presented, standard graded, residual intersection of a grade three Gorenstein ideal.
We study inequalities between graded Betti numbers of ideals in a standard graded algebra over a field and their images under embedding maps, defined earlier by us in [Math. Z. 274, (2013), no. 3-4, pp. 809-819; arXiv:1009.4488]. We show that if graded Betti numbers do not decrease when we replace ideals in an algebra by their embedded versions, then the same behaviour is carried over to ring extensions. As a corollary we give alternative inductive proofs of earlier results of Bigatti, Hulett, Pardue, Mermin-Peeva-Stillman and Murai. We extend a hypersurface restriction theorem of Herzog-Popes…
We prove the existence of HK density function for a pair $(R, I)$, where $R$ is a ${\mathbb N}$-graded domain of finite type over a perfect field and $I\subset R$ is a graded ideal of finite colength. This generalizes our earlier result where one proves the existence of such a function for a pair $(R, I)$, where, in addition $R$ is standard graded. As one of the consequences we show that if $G$ is a finite group scheme acting linearly on a polynomial ring $R$ of dimension $d$ then the HK density function $f_{R^G, {\bf m}_G}$, of the pair $(R^G, {\bf m}_G)$, is a piecewise polynomial function o…
We present an algorithm which computes the Hilbert depth of a graded module based on a theorem of Uliczka. Connected to a Herzog's question we see that the Hilbert depth of a direct sum of modules can be strictly bigger than the Hilbert depth of all the summands.
The growth of Hilbert coefficients for powers of ideals are studied. For a graded ideal $I$ in the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,...,x_n]$ and a finitely generated graded $S$-module, the Hilbert coefficients $e_i(M/I^kM)$ are polynomial functions. Given two families of graded ideals $(I_k)_{k\geq 0}$ and $(J_k)_{k\geq 0}$ with $J_k\subset I_k$ for all $k$ with the property that $J_kJ_\ell\subset J_{k+\ell}$ and $I_kI_\ell\subset I_{k+\ell}$ for all $k$ and $\ell$, and such that the algebras $A=\Dirsum_{k\geq 0}J_k$ and $B=\Dirsum_{k\geq 0}I_k$ are finitely generated, we show the function $k \mapsto…
For a standard graded ring $R$ of dimension $\geq 2$ over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ and a homogeneous ideal $I$ of finite colength, the HK density function of $R$ with respect to $I$ is a compactly supported continuous function $f_{R, I}:[0, \infty)\longto [0, \infty)$, whose integration yields the \mbox{HK} multiplicity $e_{HK}(R, I)$. Here we answer a question of V. Trivedi about the Hilbert-Kunz density function of the tensor product of standard graded rings and show that it is the convolution of the Hilbert-Kunz density function of the factor rings. Using Fourier transform, a…
Let I and J be homogeneous ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring. We study upper bounds of the Hilbert function of the intersection of I and g(J), where g is a general change of coordinates. Our main result gives a generalization of Green's hyperplane section theorem.
In this paper we study Hilbert functions and isomorphism classes of Artinian level local algebras via Macaulay's inverse system. Upper and lower bounds concerning numerical functions admissible for level algebras of fixed type and socle degree are known. For each value in this range we exhibit a level local algebra with that Hilbert function, provided that the socle degree is at most three. Furthermore we prove that level local algebras of socle degree three and maximal Hilbert function are graded. In the graded case the extremal strata have been parametrized by Cho and Iarrobino.
Hilbert's 14th problem studies the finite generation property of the intersection of an integral algebra of finite type with a subfield of the field of fractions of the algebra. It has a negative answer due to the counterexample of Nagata. We show that a subfinite version of Hilbert's 14th problem has a confirmative answer. We then establish a graded analogue of this result, which permits to show that the subfiniteness of graded linear series does not depend on the function field in which we consider it. Finally, we apply the subfiniteness result to the study of geometric and arithmetic graded…
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring with infinite residue field. Let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ that has analytic spread $\ell(I)=d$, satisfies the $G_d$ condition, the weak Artin-Nagata property $AN_{d-2}^-$ and depth$(R/I)\geq\min\lbrace 1,\dim R/I \rbrace$. In this paper, we show that if $j_1(I) = λ(I/J) +λ[R/(J_{d-1} :_{R} I+(J_{d-2} :_{R}I+I) :_R, \mathfrak{m}^\infty)]+1$, then depth$(G(I))\geq d -1$ and $r_J(I)\leq 2$, where $J$ is a general minimal reduction of $I$. In addition, we extend the result by Sally who has studied the depth of associated graded ri…
In the present paper, we characterize all possible Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a polynomial ring whose regularity is smaller than or equal to $d$, where $d$ is a positive integer. In addition, we prove the following result which is a generalization of Bigatti, Hulett and Pardue's result: Let $p \geq 0$ and $d>0$ be integers. If the base field is a field of characteristic 0 and there is a graded ideal $I$ whose projective dimension $\mathrm{proj\ dim}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $p$ and whose regularity $\mathrm{reg}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $d$, then there exists a monomia…

This article surveys results on graded algebras and their Hilbert series. We give simple constructions of finitely generated graded associative algebras $R$ with Hilbert series $H(R,t)$ very close to an arbitrary power series $a(t)$ with exponentially bounded nonnegative integer coefficients. Then we summarize some related facts on algebras with polynomial identity. Further we discuss the problem how to find series $a(t)$ which are rational/algebraic/transcendental over ${\mathbb Q}(t)$. Applying a classical result of Fatou we conclude that if a finitely generated graded algebra has a finite G…
We begin with proving a formula relating the Hilbert series of a graded algebra $A$ and the Poincaré series for $A$ in two variables. This gives the Fröberg formula in the case where the bigraded $Tor^A(k,k)$ is concentrated on the diagonal, which we take as definition of $A$ being "Koszul". We look at a resolution in the commutative case obtained from the Koszul complex in the "trivially Golod" case. The algebra structure of $Ext_A(k,k)$ is introduced in different ways. Its subalgebra generated by the one-dimensional elements is by definition the "Koszul" dual of $A$. We define the"generalize…
This paper deals with the problem of the classification of the local graded Artinian quotients $\mathbb{K}[x,y]/I$ where $\mathbb{K}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. They have a natural invariant called Hilbert-Samuel sequence. We say that a Hilbert-Samuel sequence is of homogeneous finite type, if it is the Hilbert-Samuel sequence of a finite number of isomorphism classes of graded local algebras. We give the list of all the Hilbert-Samuel sequences of homogeneous finite type in the case of algebras generated by $2$ elements of degree $1$.
We study the geometry of standard graded Hilbert schemes of polynomial rings and exterior algebras. Our investigation is motivated by a famous theorem of Reeves and Stillman for the Grothendieck Hilbert scheme, which states that the lexicographic point is smooth. By contrast, we show that, in standard graded Hilbert schemes of polynomial rings and exterior algebras, the lexicographic point can be singular, and it can lie in multiple irreducible components. We answer questions of Peeva-Stillman and of Maclagan-Smith.
In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the Hilbert series and Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring.
For a pair $(M, I)$, where $M$ is finitely generated graded module over a standard graded ring $R$ of dimension $d$, and $I$ is a graded ideal with $\ell(R/I) < \infty$, we introduce a new invariant $HKd(M, I)$ called the {\em Hilbert-Kunz density function}. In Theorem 1.1, we relate this to the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity $e_{HK}(M,I)$ by an integral formula. We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz density function is additive. Moreover it satisfies a multiplicative formula for a Segre product of rings. This gives a formula for $e_{HK}$ of the Segre product of rings in terms of the HKd of the rings invo…
In this paper, we consider $\mathbb{Z}^{r}-$graded modules on the $\mathrm{Cl}(X)$ $-$graded Cox ring $\mathbb{C}[x_{1},\dotsc,x_{r}]$ of a smooth complete toric variety $X$. Using the theory of Klyachko filtrations in the reflexive case, we construct a collection of lattice polytopes codifying the multigraded Hilbert function of the module. We apply this approach to reflexive $\mathbb{Z}^{s+r+2}$-graded modules over non-standard bigraded polynomial rings $\mathbb{C}[x_{0},\dotsc,x_{s},y_{0},\dotsc,y_{r}]$. In this case, we give sharp bounds for the multigraded regularity index of their multig…
The purpose of this paper is to initiate a new attack on Arveson's resistant conjecture, that all graded submodules of the $d$-shift Hilbert module $H^2$ are essentially normal. We introduce the stable division property for modules (and ideals): a normed module $M$ over the ring of polynomials in $d$ variables has the stable division property if it has a generating set $\{f_1, ..., f_k\}$ such that every $h \in M$ can be written as $h = \sum_i a_i f_i$ for some polynomials $a_i$ such that $\sum \|a_i f_i\| \leq C\|h\|$. We show that certain classes of modules have this property, and that the s…
Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over the field $K$, and let $I\subset S$ be a graded ideal. It is shown that for $k \gg0$ the postulation number of $I^k$ is bounded by a linear function of $k$, and it is a linear function of $k$, if $I$ is generated in a single degree. By using the relationship of the $h$-vector with the higher iterated Hilbert coefficients of $I^k$ it is shown that the Hilbert coefficients $e_i(I^k)$ of $I^k$ are polynomials for $k \gg 0$, whenever $I$ is generated in a single degree.
We consider the following open questions. Fix a Hilbert function, $h$, that occurs for a reduced zero-dimensional subscheme of $\mathbb P^2$. Among all subschemes, $X$, with Hilbert function $h$, what are the possible Hilbert functions and graded Betti numbers for the first infinitesimal neighborhood, $Z$, of $X$ (i.e. the double point scheme supported on $X$)? Is there a minimum ($h^{\min}$) and maximum ($h^{\max}$) such function? The numerical information encoded in $h$ translates to a {\it type vector}, which allows us to find unions of points on lines, called {\it linear configurations}, w…
