We give three determinantal expressions for the Hilbert series as well as the Hilbert function of a Pfaffian ring, and a closed form product formula for its multiplicity. An appendix outlining some basic facts about degeneracy loci and applications to multiplicity formulae for Pfaffian rings is also included.
We study the structure of local cohomology with support in Pfaffian varieties as a module over the Weyl algebra D_X of differential operators on the space X of n x n complex skew-symmetric matrices. The simple composition factors of these modules are known by the work of Raicu-Weyman in 2016, and when n is odd, the general theory implies that the local cohomology modules are semi-simple. When n is even, we show that the local cohomology is a direct sum of indecomposable modules coming from the pole order filtration of the Pfaffian hypersurface. We then determine the Lyubeznik numbers for Pfaff…
We consider ideals of minors of a matrix, ideals of minors of a symmetric matrix, and ideals of Pfaffians of an alternating matrix. Assuming these ideals are of generic height, we characterize the condition $G_{s}$ for these ideals in terms of the heights of other ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the same matrix. We additionally obtain bounds on the generation and concentration degrees of the Rees rings of a subclass of such ideals via specialization of the Rees rings in the generic case. We do this by proving, given sufficient height conditions on ideals of minors or Pfaffians of the matrix, …
Let $S=\mathbb{C}[x_{ij}]$ be a polynomial ring of $m\times n$ generic variables (resp. a polynomial ring of $(2n+1) \times (2n+1)$ skew-symmetric variables) over $\mathbb{C}$ and let $I$ (resp. Pf) be the determinantal ideal of maximal minors (resp. sub-maximal pfaffians) of $S$. Using the representation theoretic techniques introduced in the work of Raicu et al, we study the asymptotic behavior of the length of the local cohomology module of determinantal and pfaffian thickenings for suitable choices of cohomological degrees. This asymptotic behavior is also defined as a notion of multiplict…
Let $S$ be the coordinate ring of the space of $n\times n$ complex skew-symmetric matrices. This ring has an action of the group $\textrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$ induced by the action on the space of matrices. For every invariant ideal $I\subseteq S$, we provide an explicit description of the modules $\textrm{Ext}^{\bullet}_S(S/I,S)$ in terms of irreducible representations. This allows us to give formulas for the regularity of basic invariant ideals and (symbolic) powers of ideals of Pfaffians, as well as to characterize when these ideals have a linear free resolution. In addition, given an inclusi…
In this article, by using the technique of gluing semigroups, we give infinitely many families of 1-dimensional local rings with non-decreasing Hilbert functions. More significantly, these are local rings whose associated graded rings are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. In this sense, we give an effective technique to construct large families of 1-dimensional Gorenstein local rings associated to monomial curves, which support Rossi's conjecture saying that every Gorenstein local ring has non-decreasing Hilbert function.
We give a formula that expresses the Hilbert series of one-sided ladder determinantal rings, up to a trivial factor, in form of a determinant. This allows the convenient computation of these Hilbert series. The formula follows from a determinantal formula for a generating function for families of nonintersecting lattice paths that stay inside a one-sided ladder-shaped region, in which the paths are counted with respect to turns.
A result of Watanabe and Yoshida says that an unmixed local ring of positive characteristic is regular if and only if its Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity is one. We show that, for fixed $p$ (characteristic) and $d$ (dimension), there exist a number $ε(d,p) > 0$ such that any nonregular unmixed ring $R$ has Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity at least $1+ε(d,p)$. We also show that local rings with sufficiently small Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity are Cohen-Macaulay and $F$-rational.
In this expository paper we survey results that relate Hilbert coefficients of an m-primary ideal I in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring (R, m) with depth of the associated graded ring G(I). Several results in this area follow from two theorems of S. Huckaba and T. Marley. These were proved using homological techniques. We provide simple proofs using superficial sequences.
In this article we mainly consider the positively Z-graded polynomial ring R=F[X,Y] over an arbitrary field F and Hilbert series of finitely generated graded R-modules. The central result is an arithmetic criterion for such a series to be the Hilbert series of some R-module of positive depth. In the generic case, that is, the degrees of X and Y being coprime, this criterion can be formulated in terms of the numerical semigroup generated by those degrees.
A solution is given to the following problem: how to compute the multiplicity, or more generally the Hilbert function, at a point on a Schubert variety in an orthogonal Grassmannian. Standard monomial theory is applied to translate the problem from geometry to combinatorics. The solution of the resulting combinatorial problem forms the bulk of the paper. This approach has been followed earlier to solve the same problem for the Grassmannian and the symplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we present an interpretation of the multiplicity as the number of non-intersecting lattice paths of a ce…
We compute the Hilbert-Kunz functions of two-dimensional rings of type ADE by using representations of their indecomposable, maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules in terms of matrix factorizations, and as first syzygy modules of homogeneous ideals.
In this note, we give examples of formal power series satisfying certain conditions that cannot be realized as Hilbert series of finitely generated modules. This answers to the negative a question raised in a recent article by the second and the third author. On the other hand, we show that the answer is positive after multiplication with a scalar.
Studying Hilbert functions of concrete examples of normal toric rings, it is demonstrated that, for each $1 \leq s \leq 5$, an $O$-sequence $(h_0, h_1, \ldots, h_{2s-1}) \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^{2s}$ satisfying the properties that (i) $h_0 \leq h_1 \leq \cdots \leq h_{s-1}$, (ii) $h_{2s-1} = h_0$, $h_{2s-2} = h_1$ and (iii) $h_{2s - 1 - i} = h_i + (-1)^{i}$, $2 \leq i \leq s - 1$, can be the $h$-vector of a Cohen--Macaulay standard $G$-domain.
In this thesis we compute the Hilbert-Kunz functions of two-dimensional rings of type ADE by using representations of their indecomposable, maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules in terms of matrix factorizations, and as first syzygy modules of homogeneous ideals. For these computations we need to compute the Hilbert-series of the involved first syzygy modules as well as the fact that the surface rings of type ADE defined over the complex numbers are the rings of invariants of C[x,y] under actions defined by the finite subgroups of SL2(C). Finally, we will show that the developed tools can be used to …
Given a polynomial ring $S = \Bbbk[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ over a field $\Bbbk$, and a monomial ideal $M$ of $S$, we say the quotient ring $R = S/M$ is Macaulay-Lex if for every graded ideal of $R$, there exists a lexicographic ideal of $R$ with the same Hilbert function. In this paper, we introduce a class of quotient rings with combinatorial significance, which we call colored quotient rings. This class of rings include Clements-Lindström rings and colored squarefree rings as special cases that are known to be Macaulay-Lex. We construct two new classes of Macaulay-Lex rings, characterize all color…
In this note, we characterize the Hilbert regularity of the Stanley-Reisner ring $K[\bigtriangleup]$ in terms of the $f$-vector and the $h$-vector of a simplicial complex $\bigtriangleup$. We also compute the Hilbert regularity of a Gorenstein algebra.
In this paper we give an effective characterization of Hilbert functions and polynomials of standard algebras over an Artinian equicharacteristic local ring; the cohomological properties of such algebras are also studied. We describe algorithms to check the admissibility of a given function or polynomial as a Hilbert function or polynomial, and to produce a standard algebra with a given Hilbert function.
We present results on the Watanabe-Yoshida conjecture for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of a local ring of positive characteristic. By improving on a "volume estimate" giving a lower bound for Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity, we obtain the conjecture when the ring either has Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity less than or equal to five, or dimension less than or equal to six. For non-regular rings with fixed dimension, a new lower bound for the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity is obtained.
We give an explicit formula for the Hilbert Series of an algebra defined by a linearly presented, standard graded, residual intersection of a grade three Gorenstein ideal.
In this paper, we explore the relation between the index of reducibility and the Hilbert coefficients in local rings. Consequently, the main result of this study provides a characterization of a sequentially Cohen-Macaulay ring in terms of its Hilbert coefficients for non-parameter ideals. As corollaries to the main theorem, we obtain characterizations of a Gorenstein/Cohen-Macaulay ring in terms of its Chern coefficients for parameter ideals.
Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity and F-signature are numerical invariants of commutative rings in positive characteristic that measure severity of singularities: for a regular ring both invariants are equal to one and the converse holds under mild assumptions. A natural question is for what singular rings these invariants are closest to one. For Hilbert--Kunz multiplicity this question was first considered by the last two authors and attracted significant attention. In this paper, we study this question, i.e., an upper bound, for F-signature and revisit lower bounds on Hilbert--Kunz multiplicity.
The multigraded Hilbert scheme parametrizes all homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring graded by an abelian group with a fixed Hilbert function. We prove that any multigraded Hilbert scheme is smooth and irreducible when the polynomial ring is ZZ[x,y], which establishes a conjecture of Haiman and Sturmfels.
Given a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $(R, {\mathfrak m})$, we study the interplay between the integral closedness -- or even the normality -- of an ${\mathfrak m}$-primary $R$-ideal $I$ and conditions on the Hilbert coefficients of $I$. We relate these properties to the depth of the associated graded ring of $I$.
We develop new methods to study $\mathfrak{m}$-adic stability in an arbitrary Noetherian local ring. These techniques are used to prove results about the behavior of Hilbert-Samuel and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities under fine $\mathfrak{m}$-adic perturbations.
In this paper we find the tight closure of powers of parameter ideals of certain diagonal hypersurface rings. In many cases the associated graded ring with respect to tight closure filtration turns out to be Cohen-Macaulay. This helps us find the tight Hilbert polynomial in these diagonal hypersurfaces. We determine the tight Hilbert polynomial in the following cases: (1) F-pure diagonal hypersurfaces where number of variables is equal to the degree of defining equation, (2) diagonal hypersurface rings where characteristic of the ring is one less than the degree of defining equation and (3) qu…
Let $R$ be a local ring of characteristic $p>0$ which is $F$-finite and has perfect residue field. We compute the generalized Hilbert-Kunz invariant for certain modules over several classes of rings: hypersurfaces of finite representation type, toric rings, $F$-regular rings.
The aim of this manuscript is to discuss the Hilbert-Kunz functions over an excellent local ring regular in codimension one. We study the shape of the Hilbert-Kunz functions of modules and discuss the properties of the coefficient of the second highest term in the function. Our results extend Huneke, McDermott and Monsky's result (Math. Res. Lett. 11 (2004), no. 4, 539-546) about the shape of the Hilbert-Kunz functions, and a theorem of the second author (J. Algebra 304 (2006), no. 1, 487-499) for rings with weaker conditions. In this paper, for a Cohen-Macaulay ring, we also explores an equiv…
In this paper we solve a problem posed by M.E. Rossi: {\it Is the Hilbert function of a Gorenstein local ring of dimension one not decreasing? } More precisely, for any integer $h>1$, $h \notin\{14+22k, \, 35+46k \ | \ k\in\mathbb{N} \}$, we construct infinitely many one-dimensional Gorenstein local rings, included integral domains, reduced and non-reduced rings, whose Hilbert function decreases at level $h$; moreover we prove that there are no bounds to the decrease of the Hilbert function. The key tools are numerical semigroup theory, especially some necessary conditions to obtain decreasing…
We present short and elementary proofs of two theorems of Huckaba and Marley, while generalizing them at the same time to the case of a module. The theorems concern a characterization of the depth of the associated graded ring of a Cohen-Macaulay module, with respect to a Hilbert filtration, in terms of the Hilbert coefficient e_1. As an application, we derive bounds on the higher Hilbert coefficient e_i in terms of e_0.
In this paper, we present an algorithm for computing the minimal reductions of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals of Cohen--Macaulay local rings. Using this algorithm, we are able to compute the Hilbert--Samuel multiplicities and solve the membership problem for the integral closure of $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals.
The Del Pezzo surface $Y$ of degree 5 is the blow up of the plane in 4 general points, embedded in $\mathbb{P}^5$ by the system of cubics passing through these points. It is the simplest example of the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud theorem on arithmetically-Gorenstein subvarieties of codimension 3 being Pfaffian. Its automorphism group is the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_5$. We give canonical explicit $\mathfrak S_5$-invariant Pfaffian equations through a $6 \times 6$ antisymmetric matrix. We give concrete geometric descriptions of the irreducible representations of $\mathfrak S_5$. Finally, we give $\ma…
Let k be an arbitrary field (of arbitrary characteristic) and let X = [x_{i,j}] be a generic m x n matrix of variables. Denote by I_2(X) the ideal in k[X] = k[x_{i,j}: i = 1, ..., m; j = 1, ..., n] generated by the 2 x 2 minors of X. We give a recursive formulation for the lengths of the k[X]-module k[X]/(I_2(X) + (x_{1,1}^q,..., x_{m,n}^q)) as q varies over all positive integers using Grobner basis. This is a generalized Hilbert-Kunz function, and our formulation proves that it is a polynomial function in q. We give closed forms for the cases when m is at most 2, %as well as the closed forms …
For a pair $(M, I)$, where $M$ is finitely generated graded module over a standard graded ring $R$ of dimension $d$, and $I$ is a graded ideal with $\ell(R/I) < \infty$, we introduce a new invariant $HKd(M, I)$ called the {\em Hilbert-Kunz density function}. In Theorem 1.1, we relate this to the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity $e_{HK}(M,I)$ by an integral formula. We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz density function is additive. Moreover it satisfies a multiplicative formula for a Segre product of rings. This gives a formula for $e_{HK}$ of the Segre product of rings in terms of the HKd of the rings invo…
Let M be a finitely generated ZZ-graded module over the standard graded polynomial ring R=K[X_1, ..., X_n] with K a field, and let H_M(t)=Q_M(t)/(1-t)^d be the Hilbert series of M. We introduce the Hilbert regularity of M as the lowest possible value of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity for an R-module with Hilbert series H_M. Our main result is an arithmetical description of this invariant which connects the Hilbert regularity of M to the smallest k such that the power series Q_M(1-t)/(1-t)^k has no negative coefficients. Finally we give an algorithm for the computation of the Hilbert regula…
In 1978 Lipman presented a proof of the existence of a desingularization for any excellent surface. The strategy of Lipman's proof is based on the finiteness of the number H(R) defined as the supreme of the second Hilbert-Samuel coefficient I, where I range the set of normal m-primary ideals of a Noetherian complete local ring (R,m). The problem studied in the paper is the extension of the result of Lipman on H(R) to m-primary ideals I of a d-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay ring R such that the associated graded ring of R with respect to I^n is Cohen-Macaulay for n>> 0.
Let $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ be a $d$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local ring with infinite residue field. Let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ that has analytic spread $\ell(I)=d$, satisfies the $G_d$ condition, the weak Artin-Nagata property $AN_{d-2}^-$ and depth$(R/I)\geq\min\lbrace 1,\dim R/I \rbrace$. In this paper, we show that if $j_1(I) = λ(I/J) +λ[R/(J_{d-1} :_{R} I+(J_{d-2} :_{R}I+I) :_R, \mathfrak{m}^\infty)]+1$, then depth$(G(I))\geq d -1$ and $r_J(I)\leq 2$, where $J$ is a general minimal reduction of $I$. In addition, we extend the result by Sally who has studied the depth of associated graded ri…
Monomial ideals and toric rings are closely related. By consider a Grobner basis we can always associated to any ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring a monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$, in some special situations the monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$ is square free. On the other hand given any monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, we can define the toric $K[I]\subset S$. In this paper we will study toric rings defined by Segre embeddings, we will prove that their $h-$ vectors coincides with the so called Simon Newcomb number's in probabilities and combinatorics. We solve the original questio…
Commutative rings in which every prime ideal is the intersection of maximal ideals are called Hilbert (or Jacobson) rings. We propose to define classical Hilbert modules by the property that {\it classical prime} submodules are the intersection of maximal submodules. It is shown that all co-semisimple modules as well as all Artinian modules are classical Hilbert modules. Also, every module over a zero-dimensional ring is classical Hilbert. Results illustrating connections amongst the notions of classical Hilbert module and Hilbert ring are also provided. Rings $R$ over which all $R$-modules ar…
Let $A = K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$. We will classify all the Gotzmann ideals of $A$ with at most $n$ generators. In addition, we will study Hilbert functions $H$ for which all homogeneous ideals of $A$ with the Hilbert function $H$ have the same graded Betti numbers. These Hilbert functions will be called inflexible Hilbert functions. We introduce the notion of segmentwise critical Hilbert function and show that segmentwise critical Hilbert functions are inflexible.
We study the multigraded Poincaré-Betti series of $A=S/\aaf$, where $S$ is the ring of polynomials in $n$ indeterminates divided by the monomial ideal $\aaf$. There is a conjecture about the multigraded Poincaré-Betti series by Charalambous and Reeves which they proved in the case, where the Taylor resolution is minimal. We introduce a conjecture about the minimal $A$-free resolution of the residue class field and show that this conjecture implies the conjecture of Charalambous and Reeves. We prove our conjecture for several classes of algebras. The conjecture implies that $A$ is Golod if and …
Let $(R,\m)$ be a formally unmixed local ring of positive prime characteristic and dimension $d$. We examine the implications of having small Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity (i.e., close to 1). In particular, we show that if $R$ is not regular, there exists a lower bound, strictly greater than one, depending only on $d$, for its Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity.
In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the Hilbert series and Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring.
Let $(A,\m)$ be a Noetherian local ring with infinite residue field and let $I$ be an ideal in $A$ and let $F(I) = \oplus_{n \geq 0}I^n/\m I^n$ be the fiber-cone of $I$. We prove certain relations among the Hilbert coefficients of $F(I)$ when the $a$-invariant of the associated graded ring $G(I)$ is negative.
In this paper, we investigate a lower bound (say $s_{HK}(p,d)$) on Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities for non-regular unmixed local rings of Krull dimension $d$ with characteristic $p>0$. Especially, we focus three-dimensional local rings. In fact, as a main result, we will prove that $s_{HK}(p,3) = 4/3$ and that a three-dimensional complete local ring of Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity 4/3 is isomorphic to the non-degnerate quadric hyperplanes $k[[X,Y,Z,W]]/(X^2+Y^2+Z^2+W^2)$ under mild conditions. Furthermore, we pose a generalization of the main theorem to the case of $\dim A \ge 4$ as a conjecture, and…
Let $R$ be the polynomial ring $K[x_{i,j}]$ where $1 \le i \le r$ and $j \in \mathbb{N}$, and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$ stable under the natural action of the infinite symmetric group $S_{\infty}$. Nagel--Römer recently defined a Hilbert series $H_I(s,t)$ of $I$ and proved that it is rational. We give a much shorter proof of this theorem using tools from the theory of formal languages and a simple algorithm that computes the series.
Given an ideal of forms in an algebra (polynomial ring, tensor algebra, exterior algebra, Lie algebra, bigraded polynomial ring), we consider the Hilbert series of the factor ring. We concentrate on the minimal Hilbert series, which is achieved when the forms are generic. In the polynomial ring we also consider the opposite case of maximal series. This is mainly a survey article, but we give a lot of problems and conjectures. The only novel results concern the maximal series in the polynomial ring.
We study the geometry of standard graded Hilbert schemes of polynomial rings and exterior algebras. Our investigation is motivated by a famous theorem of Reeves and Stillman for the Grothendieck Hilbert scheme, which states that the lexicographic point is smooth. By contrast, we show that, in standard graded Hilbert schemes of polynomial rings and exterior algebras, the lexicographic point can be singular, and it can lie in multiple irreducible components. We answer questions of Peeva-Stillman and of Maclagan-Smith.
Let (R,m,k) be an excellent, local, normal ring of characteristic p with a perfect residue field and dim R=d. Let M be a finitely generated R-module. We show that there exists a real number beta(M) such that lambda(M/I^[q]M) = e_{HK}(M) q^d + beta(M) q^{d-1} + O(q^{d-2}).
We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity is upper semi-continuous in F-finite rings and algebras of essentially finite type over an excellent local ring.
In this paper we study the Hilbert function HR of one-dimensional semigroup rings R = k[[S]]. For some classes of semigroups, by means of the notion of support of the elements in S, we give conditions on the generators of S in order to have decreasing HR. When the embedding dimension v and the multiplicity e verify v + 3 ? e ? v + 4, the decrease of HR gives explicit description of the Apery set of S. In particular for e = v+3, we classify the semigroups with e = 13 and HR decreasing, further we show that HR is non-decreasing if e < 12. Finally we deduce that HR is non-decreasing for every Gor…
Let $R$ be the face ring of a simplicial complex of dimension $d-1$ and ${\mathcal R}(\mathfrak{n})$ be the Rees algebra of the maximal homogeneous ideal $\mathfrak{n}$ of $R.$ We show that the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function $HK(s)=\ell({\mathcal R}(\mathfrak n)/(\mathfrak n, \mathfrak n t)^{[s]})$ is given by a polynomial for all large $s.$ We calculate it in many examples and also provide a Macaulay2 code for computing $HK(s).$
