Let $A = K[x_1, ..., x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$. We will classify all the Gotzmann ideals of $A$ with at most $n$ generators. In addition, we will study Hilbert functions $H$ for which all homogeneous ideals of $A$ with the Hilbert function $H$ have the same graded Betti numbers. These Hilbert functions will be called inflexible Hilbert functions. We introduce the notion of segmentwise critical Hilbert function and show that segmentwise critical Hilbert functions are inflexible.
For standard graded Artinian $K$-algebras defined by componentwise linear ideals and Gotzmann ideals, we give conditions for the weak Lefschetz property in terms of numerical invariants of the defining ideals.
In this paper we characterize the componentwise lexsegment ideals which are componentwise linear and the lexsegment ideals generated in one degree which are Gotzmann.
A Gotzmann monomial ideal of the polynomial ring is a monomial ideal which is generated in one degree and which satisfies Gotzmann's persistence theorem. A subset $V$ is said to be a Gotzmann subset if the ideal generated by $V$ is a Gotzmann monomial ideal. In the present paper, we find all integers $a>0$ such that every Gotzmann subset $V$ with $|V|=a$ is lexsegment (up to the permutation of the variables). In addition, we classify all Gotzmann subsets of $K[x_1,x_2,x_3]$.
Gotzmann proved the persistence for minimal growth for ideals. His theorem is called Gotzmann's persistence theorem. In this paper, based on the combinatorics on binomial coefficients, a simple combinatorial proof of Gotzmann's persistence theorem in the special case of monomial ideals is given.
Let P = k[x_1, ..., x_n] be the polynomial ring in n variables. A homogeneous ideal I of P generated in degree d is called Gotzmann if it has the smallest possible Hilbert function out of all homogeneous ideals with the same dimension in degree d. The edge ideal of a simple graph G on vertices x_1, ..., x_n is the quadratic square-free monomial ideal generated by all x_i x_j where {x_i,x_j} is an edge of G. The only edge ideals that are Gotzmann are those edge ideals corresponding to star graphs.
Gotzmann's Persistence states that the growth of an arbitrary ideal can be controlled by comparing it to the growth of the lexicographic ideal. This is used, for instance, in finding equations which cut out the Hilbert scheme (of subschemes of $\mathbf{P}^n$ with fixed Hilbert polynomial) sitting inside an appropriate Grassmannian. We introduce the notion of an {\it extremal ideal} which extends the notion of the lex ideal to other term orders. We then state and prove a version of Gotzmann's theorem for these ideals, valid in an open subset of a Grassmannian.
The purpose of this note is to characterize the finite Hilbert functions which force all of their artinian algebras to enjoy the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Curiously, they turn out to be exactly those (characterized by Wiebe in $[Wi]$) whose Gotzmann ideals have the WLP. This implies that, if a Gotzmann ideal has the WLP, then all algebras with the same Hilbert function (and hence lower Betti numbers) have the WLP as well. However, we will answer in the negative, even in the case of level algebras, the most natural question that one might ask after reading the previous sentence: If $A$ is …
Macaulay's theorem and Fröberg's conjecture deal with the Hilbert function of homogeneous ideals in polynomial rings $S$ over a field $K$. In this short note we present some questions related to variants of Macaulay's theorem and Fröberg's conjecture for $K$-subalgebras of polynomial rings. In details, given a subspace $V$ of forms of degree $d$ we consider the $K$-subalgebra $K[V]$ of $S$ generated by $V$. What can be said about Hilbert function of $K[V]$? The analogy with the ideal case suggests several questions. To state them we start by recalling Macaulay's theorem, Fröberg's conjecture a…
In this paper we want to revive the object sectional matrix which encodes the Hilbert functions of successive hyperplane sections of a homogeneous ideal. We translate and/or reprove recent results in this language. Moreover, some new results are shown about their maximal growth and Persistence Theorem, a gen- eralization of Gotzmann's persistence Theorem. This suggests that further investigation of this object might cast a new light in the study of geometric consequences of maximal growth of the Hilbert function.
We consider trace ideals in Noetherian rings and focus our attention to one-dimensional analytically irreducible local rings. For such rings we classify those Gorenstein rings which admit only a finite number of trace ideals.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. In this paper, we introduce the concept of quasi $J$-ideal which is a generalization of $J$-ideal. A proper ideal of $R$ is called a quasi $J$-ideal if its radical is a $J$-ideal. Many characterizations of quasi $J$-ideals in some special rings are obtained. We characterize rings in which every proper ideal is quasi $J$-ideal. Further, as a generalization of presimplifiable rings, we define the notion of quasi presimplifiable rings. We call a ring $R$ a quasi presimplifiable ring if whenever $a,b\in R$ and $a=ab$, then either $a$ is a nilpotent or $…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. An ideal $I$ of $R$ is said to be a big ideal (resp. an upper big ideal) if whenever $J\subsetneqq I$ (resp. $I\subsetneqq J$), $J^{n}\subsetneqq I^{n}$ (resp. $I^{n}\subsetneqq J^{n}$) for every $n\geq 1$; and $R$ itself is a big ideal ring provided that every ideal of $R$ is a big ideal. In this paper we study the notions of big ideals, upper big ideals and big ideal rings in different contexts of commutative rings such us integrally closed domains, pullbacks and trivial ring extensions etc. We show that the notions of big and upper big ideals are…
A famous result due to I. M. Isaacs states that if a commutative ring $R$ has the property that every prime ideal is principal, then every ideal of $R$ is principal. This motivates ring theorists to study commutative rings for which every ideal is a direct sum of cyclically presented modules. In this paper, we study commutative rings whose ideals are direct sum of cyclically presented modules.
This study investigates the structure of Arf rings. From the perspective of ring extensions, a decomposition of integrally closed ideals is given. Using this, we present a kind of their prime ideal decomposition in Arf rings, and determine their structure in the case where both R and the integral closure of R are local rings.
In this paper we give versions of Hilbert's syzygy theorem for finitely generated modules over polynomial rings over direct product of principal ideal rings.
In this study, we introduce the concept of "uniformly 2-absorbing primary ideals" of commutative rings, which imposes a certain boundedness condition on the usual notion of 2-absorbing primary ideals of commutative rings. Then we investigate some properties of uniformly 2-absorbing primary ideals of commutative rings with examples. Also, we investigate a specific kind of uniformly 2-absorbing primary ideals by the name of "special 2-absorbing primary ideals".
Let $k$ be a field. We determine the ideals $I$ in a finitely generated graded $k$-algebra $A$, whose associated graded rings are isomorphic to $A$. Also we compute the graded local cohomologies of the Rees rings $A[I t]$ and give the condition for $A[I t]$ to be generalized Cohen-Macaulay.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of N-pure ideal as a generalization of pure ideal. Using this concept, a new and interesting type of rings is presented, we call it mid ring. Also, we provide new characterizations for von Neumann regular and zero-dimensional rings. Moreover, some results about mp-ring are given. Finally, a characterization for mid rings is provided. Then it is shown that the class of mid rings is strictly between the class of reduced mp-rings (p.f. rings) and the class of mp-rings.
This paper studies Ulrich ideals in one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. A correspondence between Ulrich ideals and overrings is given. Using the correspondence, chains of Ulrich ideals are closely explored. The specific cases where the rings are of minimal multiplicity and \operatorname{GGL} rings are analyzed.
For commutative rings with identity, we introduce and study the concept of semi $r$-ideals which is a kind of generalization of both $r$-ideals and semiprime ideals. A proper ideal $I$ of a commutative ring $R$ is called semi $r$-ideal if whenever $a^{2}\in I$ and $Ann_{R}(a)=0$, then $a\in I$. Several properties and characterizations of this class of ideals are determined. In particular, we investigate semi $r$-ideal under various contexts of constructions such as direct products, localizations, homomorphic images, idealizations and amalagamations rings. We extend semi $r$-ideals of rings to …
We consider a classification problem of ideals by codimension in case rings are the local rings of irreducible curve singularities. In this paper, we introduce a systematic method to solve this problem.
In this paper, we study conditions guaranteeing that a product of ideals defines a Golod ring. We show that for a $3$-dimensional regular local ring (or $3$-variable polynomial ring) $(R , \m)$, the ideal $I \m$ always defines a Golod ring for any proper ideal $I \subset R$. We also show that non-Golod products of ideals are ubiquitous; more precisely, we prove that for any proper ideal with grade $\geq 4$, there exists an ideal $J \subseteq I$ such that $IJ$ is not Golod. We conclude by showing that if $I$ is any proper ideal in a $3$-dimensional regular local ring and $\mfa \subseteq I$ a co…
In commutative ring theory, there is a theorem of Cohen which states that if in a commutative ring all prime ideals are finitely generated then every ideal is finitely generated. However, it is known that having only maximal ideals finitely generated doesn't imply all ideals be finitely generated. In his article we ask the question that what happens if we assume all non-maximal ideals are finitely generated, and we answer the question by showing that indeed then all maximal ideals are also finitely generated i.e. the ring becomes Noetherian.
We discuss projective equivalence of ideals in Noetherian rings and the existence or failure of existence of projectively full ideals. We describe connections with the Rees valuations and Rees integers of an ideal, and consider the question of whether improvements can be made by passing to an integral extension ring.
We investigate the presence of Cohen-Macaulay ideals in invariant rings and show that an ideal of an invariant ring corresponding to a modular representation of a $p$-group is not Cohen-Macaulay unless the invariant ring itself is. As an intermediate result, we obtain that non-Cohen-Macaulay factorial rings cannot contain Cohen-Macaulay ideals. For modular cyclic groups of prime order, we show that the quotient of the invariant ring modulo the transfer ideal is always Cohen-Macaulay, extending a result of Fleischmann.
Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $M$ a finitely generated $R$-module. Under various hypotheses, it is proved that the center of $\mbox{End}_R(M)$ coincides with the endomorphism ring of the trace ideal of $M$. These results are exploited to establish results for balanced and rigid modules, and to settle certain cases of a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand.
The structure of the complex $\operatorname{\mathbf{R}Hom}_R(R/I,R)$ is explored for an Ulrich ideal $I$ in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring $R$. As a consequence, it is proved that in a one-dimensional almost Gorenstein but non-Gorenstein local ring, the only possible Ulrich ideal is the maximal ideal. It is also studied when Ulrich ideals have the same minimal number of generators.
All rings are commutative with $1\neq0$. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of weakly $n$-absorbing ideals generalizing weakly 2-absorbing ideals. We prove that over a $u$-ring $R$ the Anderson-Badawi's conjectures about $n$-absorbing ideals and the Badawi-Yousefian's question about weakly 2-absorbing ideals hold.
In this paper, we introduce a concept of $\mathfrak{X}$-element with respect to an $M$-closed set $\mathfrak{X}$ in multiplicative lattices and study properties of $\mathfrak{X}$-elements. For a particular $M$-closed subset $\mathfrak{X}$, we define the concept of $r$-element, $n$-element and $J$-element. These elements generalize the notion of $r$-ideals, $n$-ideals and $J$-ideals of a commutative ring with unity to multiplicative lattices. In fact, we prove that an ideal $I$ of a commutative ring $R$ with unity is a $n$-ideal ($J$-ideal) of $R$ if and only if it is an $n$-element ($J$-elemen…
Given a square matrix $A$ with entries in a commutative ring $S$, the ideal of $S[X]$ consisting of polynomials $f$ with $f(A) =0$ is called the null ideal of $A$. Very little is known about null ideals of matrices over general commutative rings. We compute a generating set of the null ideal of a matrix in case $S = D/dD$ is the residue class ring of a principal ideal domain $D$ modulo $d\in D$. We discuss two applications. At first, we compute a decomposition of the $S$-module $S[A]$ into cyclic $S$-modules and explain the strong relationship between this decomposition and the determined gene…
In this study, we present the generalization of the concept of $r$-ideals in commutative rings with nonzero identity. Let $R$ be a commutative ring with $0\neq1$ and $L(R)$ be the lattice of all ideals of $R$. Suppose that $ϕ:L(R)\rightarrow L(R)\cup\left\{\emptyset\right\}$ is a function. A proper ideal $I$ of $R$ is called a $ϕ-r$-ideal of $R$ if whenever $ab\in I$ and $Ann(a)=(0)$ imply that $b\in I$ for each $a,b\in R.$ In addition to giving many properties of $ϕ-r$-ideal, we also examine the concept of $ϕ-r$-ideal in trivial ring extension and use them to characterize total quotient rings…
In this work, we investigate the transfer of some homological properties from a ring $R$ to his amalgamated duplication along some ideal $I$ of $R$, and then generate new and original families of rings with these properties.
By definition, an $\m$-primary ideal $I$ in a 2-dimensional regular local ring $(R, \m)$ is contracted if $I=R \cap IR[\m/x]$ for some $x \in \m \setminus \m^2$. Contracted ideals have been introduced by Zariski and used for proving the unique factorization theorem for complete (i.e. integrally closed) ideals. Any complete ideal is contracted but not the other way round. While the associated graded rings to complete ideals are always Cohen-Macaulay, this is not the case for contracted ideals. Our goal is to study depth, Hilbert function and defining equations of the graded rings of homogeneous…
We study the ring extensions R \subseteq T having the same set of prime ideals provided Nil(R) is a divided prime ideal. Some conditions are given under which no such T exist properly containing R. Using idealization theory, the examples are also discussed to strengthen the results.
Let $R$ be a commutative chain ring. We use a variation of Gröbner bases to study the lattice of ideals of $R[x]$. Let $I$ be a proper ideal of $R[x]$. We are interested in the following two questions: When is $R[x]/I$ Frobenius? When is $R[x]/I$ Frobenius and local? We develop algorithms for answering both questions. When the nilpotency of $\text{rad}\,R$ is small, the algorithms provide explicit answers to the questions.
Let $R$ be a Noetherian local ring. We prove that $R$ is regular of dimension at most four if, and only if, every prime ideal, defining a Gorenstein quotient ring, is syzygetic. We deduce a characterization of these rings in terms of the André-Quillen homology.
Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring possessing a canonical module. In this paper we consider when the maximal ideal of R is self-dual, i.e. it is isomorphic to its canonical dual as an R-module. local rings satisfying this condition are called Teter rings, and studied by Teter, Huneke-Vraciu, Ananthnarayan-Avramov-Moore, and so on. On the positive dimensional case, we show such rings are exactly the endomorphism rings of the maximal ideals of some Gorenstein local rings of dimension one. We also provide some connection between the self-duality of the maximal ideal and near Gorensteinness.
We study one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings whose trace ideal of the canonical module is as small as possible. In this paper we call such rings far-flung Gorenstein rings. We investigate far-flung Gorenstein rings in relation with the endomorphism algebras of the maximal ideals and numerical semigroup rings. We show that the solution of the Rohrbach problem in additive number theory provides an upper bound for the multiplicity of far-flung Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings. Reflexive modules over far-flung Gorenstein rings are also studied.
The notion of 2-AGL ring in dimension one which is a natural generalization of almost Gorenstein local ring is posed in terms of the rank of Sally modules of canonical ideals. The basic theory is developed, investigating also the case where the rings considered are numerical semigroup rings over fields. Examples are explored.
Irreducible decompositions of monomial ideals in polynomial rings over a field are well-understood. In this paper, we investigate decompositions in the set of monomial ideals in the semigroup ring A[\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}^d] where A is an arbitrary commutative ring with identity. We classify the irreducible elements of this set, which we call m-irreducible, and we classify the elements that admit decompositions into finite intersections of m-irreducible ideals.
In this paper, we give a characterization for the amalgamation to be a SIT-ring and also we give a characterization for the bi-amalgamation to be a SITT-ring. We also give some characterizations for strong weakly SIT-rings.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Lindo and Pande have recently posed the question asking when every ideal of R is isomorphic to some trace ideal of R. This paper studies this question and gives several answers. In particular, a complete answer is given in the case where R is local: it is proved in this paper that every ideal of R is isomorphic to a trace ideal if and only if R is an artinian Gorenstein ring, or a 1-dimensional hypersurface with multiplicity at most 2, or a unique factorization domain.
The properties of the intersection algebra of two principal monomial ideals in a polynomial ring are investigated in detail. Results are obtained regarding the Hilbert series and the canonical ideal of the intersection algebra using methods from the theory of diophantine linear equations with integer coefficients.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with non-zero identity. In this paper, we introduce the concept of weakly $J$-ideals as a new generalization of $J$-ideals. We call a proper ideal $I$ of a ring $R$ a weakly $J$-ideal if whenever $a,b\in R$ with $0\neq ab\in I$ and $a\notin J(R)$, then $a\in I$. Many of the basic properties and characterizations of this concept are studied. We investigate weakly $J$-ideals under various contexts of constructions such as direct products, localizations, homomorphic images. Moreover, a number of examples and results on weakly $J$-ideals are discussed. Finally, the th…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring and let $I$ be an ideal of $R$. In this paper, we introduce the cozero-divisor graph $\acuteΓ_I(R)$ of $R$ and obtain some related results.
