We prove existence results that give information about the space of minimal immersions of 2-tori into $ S ^ 3 $. More specifically, we show that \begin{enumerate} \item For every positive integer $ n $, there are countably many real $n $-dimensional families of minimally immersed 2-tori in $ S ^ 3 $. Every linearly full minimal immersion $ T ^ 2\to S ^ 3 $ belongs to exactly one of these families. \item Let $ \mathcal A $ be the space of rectangular 2-tori. There is a countable dense subset $\mathcal B $ of $\mathcal A $ such that every torus in $\mathcal B$ can be minimally immersed into $ S ^ 3 $. \end{enumerate} The main content of this manuscript lies in finding minimal immersions that satisfy {\bf periodicity conditions} and hence obtaining maps of tori, rather than simply immersions of the plane. We make use of a correspondence, established by Hitchin, between minimal tori in $S^3$ and algebraic curve data.
Minimal tori that are linearly full in the 3-sphere possess a natural invariant g called their spectral genus, which was introduced by Hitchin. We show that for each g>0, there are countably many real g-dimensional families of minimally immersed tori with spectral genus g (two of these dimensions are just reparametrisations of the torus). Each family maps from a fixed torus of rectangular conformal type.
We formulate a class of minimal tori in S^3 in terms of classical mechanics, reveal a curious property of the Clifford torus, and note that the question of periodicity can be made more explicit in a simple way.
We show that any minimal torus in $S^3$ which is Alexandrov immersed must be rotationally symmetric. An analogous result holds for surfaces of constant mean curvature.
Special class of surfaces in five-dimensional sphere in $C^3$ is considered. Immersion equations for minimal tori of that class are shown to be reducible to the equation $u_{z\bar z}=e^u-e^{-2u}$ which is integrable by means of inverse scattering method. Finite-gap minimal tori are constructed.
In this paper, we consider new components of the key space of the Moduli space of minimal surfaces in flat 4-tori and calculate their dimensions. Moreover, we construct an example of minimal surfaces in 4-tori and obtain an element of the Moduli. In the process of the construction, we give an example of minimal surfaces with good property in a 3-torus distinct from classical examples.
In this paper, we study trigonal minimal surfaces in flat tori. First, we show a topological obstruction similar to that of hyperelliptic minimal surfaces. Actually, the genus of trigonal minimal surface in 3-dimensional flat torus must be 1 (mod 3). Next, we construct an explicit example in the higher codimensional case. This surface satisfies good properties and is theoretically distinct from traditional examples.
We study the energy functional on the set of Lagrangian tori in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ . We prove that the value of the energy functional on a certain family of Hamiltonian minimal Lagrangian tori in $\mathbb{C}P^2$ is strictly larger than energy of the Clifford torus.
We investigate which orbits of an $n$-dimensional torus action on a $2n$-dimensional toric Kähler manifold $M$ are minimal. In other words, we study minimal submanifolds appearing as the fibres of the moment map on a toric Kähler manifold. Amongst other questions we investigate and give partial answers to the following: (1) How many such minimal Lagrangian tori exist? (2) Can their stability, as critical points of the area functional, be characterised just from the ambient geometry? (3) Given a toric symplectic manifold, for which sets of orbits $S$, is there a compatible toric Kähler metric w…
This paper is devoted to the study of minimal immersions of flat $n$-tori into spheres, especially those immersed by the first eigenfunctions (such immersion is called $λ_1$-minimal immersion), which also play important roles in spectral geometry. It is known that there are only two non-congruent $λ_1$-minimal $2$-tori in spheres, which are both flat. For higher dimensional case, the Clifford $n$-torus in $\mathbb{S}^{2n-1}$ might be the only known example in the literature. In this paper, by discussing the general construction of homogeneous minimal flat $n$-tori in spheres, we construct many…
In this paper by reduction we construct a family of conformally flat Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian tori in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ as the image of the composition of the Hopf map $\mathcal{H}: \mathbb{S}^7\to \mathbb{CP}^3$ and a map $ψ:\mathbb{R}^3 \to \mathbb{S}^7$ with certain conditions.
We show that for every non-negative integer n there is a real n-dimensional family of minimal Lagrangian tori in CP^2, and hence of special Lagrangian cones in C^3 whose link is a torus. The proof utilises the fact that such tori arise from integrable systems, and can be described using algebro-geometric (spectral curve) data.
A Euclidean minimal torus with planar ends gives rise to an immersed Willmore torus in the conformal 3--sphere $S^3=\R^3\cup \{\infty\}$. The class of Willmore tori obtained this way is given a spectral theoretic characterization as the class of Willmore tori with reducible spectral curve. A spectral curve of this type is necessarily the double of the spectral curve of an elliptic KP soliton. The simplest possible examples of minimal tori with planar ends are related to 1--gap Lamé potentials, the simplest non--trivial algebro geometric KdV potentials. If one allows for translational periods, …
Let (M,g) be a compact, connected riemannian manifold that is homogeneous, i.e. each pair of points p,q in M have isometric neighborhoods. This paper is a first step towards an understanding of the extent to which it is true that for each "generic" initial condition f0, the solution to the Heat Equation is such that for sufficiently large t, f(.,t) is a minimal Morse function, i.e., a Morse function whose total number of critical points is the minimal possible on M. In this paper we show that this is true for flat tori and round spheres in all dimensions.
For each integer m>1 and l>0 we construct a pair of compact embedded minimal surfaces of genus 1+4m(m-1)l. These surfaces desingularize the m Clifford tori meeting each other along a great circle at the angle of π/m. They are invariant under a finite group of screw motions and have no reflection symmetry across a great sphere.
H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in general Kähler manifolds generalize special Lagrangian submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper we will use the deformation theory of H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in Kähler manifolds to construct minimal Lagrangian torus in certain Kähler-Einstein manifolds with negative first Chern class.
Generalizing earlier work by Ros in ambient dimension three, we prove an affine lower bound for the Morse index of closed minimal hypersurfaces inside a flat torus in terms of their first Betti number (with purely dimensional coefficients).
Let $\mathcal{K}$ be the space of properly embedded minimal tori in quotients of $\R^3$ by two independent translations, with any fixed (even) number of parallel ends. After an appropriate normalization, we prove that $\mathcal{K}$ is a 3-dimensional real analytic manifold that reduces to the finite coverings of the examples defined by Karcher, Meeks and Rosenberg in \cite{ka4,ka6,mr3}. The degenerate limits of surfaces in $\mathcal{K}$ are the catenoid, the helicoid and three 1-parameter families of surfaces: the simply and doubly periodic Scherk minimal surfaces and the Riemann minimal examp…
In this paper we show that all totally real superconformal minimal tori in $CP^2$ correspond with doubly-periodic finite gap solutions of the Tzitzeica equation $$ω_{z{\overline z}}=e^{-2ω}-e^ω$$ Using the results on the Tzitzeica equation in integrable system theory, we describe explicitly all these tori by Prym-theta functions.
In this paper we give an explicit parametrisation of the moduli space of equivariant harmonic maps from a 2-torus to the 3-sphere. As Hitchin proved, a harmonic map of a 2-torus is described by its spectral data, which consists of a hyperelliptic curve together with a pair of differentials and a line bundle. The space of spectral data is naturally a fibre bundle over the space of spectral curves. For homogeneous tori the space of spectral curves is a disc and the bundle is trivial. For tori with a one-dimensional invariance group, we enumerate the path connected components of the space of spec…
The normalized eigenvalues $Λ_i(M,g)$ of the Laplace-Beltrami operator can be considered as functionals on the space of all Riemannian metrics $g$ on a fixed surface $M$. In recent papers several explicit examples of extremal metrics were provided. These metrics are induced by minimal immersions of surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^3$ or $\mathbb{S}^4$. In the present paper a family of extremal metrics induced by minimal immersions in $\mathbb{S}^5$ is provided.
In this paper we use structure preserving torus actions on Kahler-Einstein manifolds to construct minimal Lagrangian submanifolds. Our main result is: Let N^2n be a Kahler-Einstein manifold with positive scalar curvature with an effective T^n-action. Then precisely one regular orbit L of the T-action is a minimal Lagrangian submanifold of N. Moreover there is an (n-1)-torus T^n-1 in T^n and a sequence of non-flat immersed minimal Lagrangian tori L_k in N, invariant under T^n-1 s.t. L_k locally converge to L (in particular the supremum of the sectional curvatures of L_k and the distance between…
The nullity of a minimal submanifold $M\subset S^{n}$ is the dimension of the nullspace of the second variation of the area functional. That space contains as a subspace the effect of the group of rigid motions $SO(n+1)$ of the ambient space, modulo those motions which preserve $M$, whose dimension is the Killing nullity $kn(M)$ of $M$. In the case of 2-dimensional tori $M$ in $S^{3}$, there is an additional naturally-defined 2-dimensional subspace; the dimension of the sum of the action of the rigid motions and this space is the natural nullity $nnt(M)$. In this paper we will study minimal to…
A peculiarity of the geometry of the euclidean 3-sphere $\S3$ is that it allows for the existence of compact without boundary minimally immersed surfaces. Despite a wealthy of examples of such surfaces, the only known tori minimally embedded in $\S3$ are the ones congruent to the Clifford torus. In 1970 Lawson conjectured that the Clifford torus is, up to congruences, the only torus minimally embedded in $\S3$. We prove here Lawson conjecture to be true. Two results are instrumental to this work, namely, a characterization of the Clifford torus in terms of its first eingenfunctions (\cite{MR})…
We classify irreducible representations of connected compact Lie groups whose orbit space is isometric to the orbit space of a representation of a finite extension of (positive dimensional) toric group. They turn out to be exactly the non-polar irreducible representations preserving an isoparametric submanifold and acting with cohomogeneity one on it.
We describe a 3-parametric family $\mathcal{K}$ of properly embedded minimal tori with four parallel ends in quotients of $\mathbb{R}^3$ by two independent translations, which we will call the \textit{Standard Examples.} These surfaces generalize the examples given by Karcher, Meeks and Rosenberg in \cite{ka4,ka6,mr3}. $\mathcal{K}$ can be endowed with a natural structure of a self-conjugated 3-dimensional real analytic manifold diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}\times(\mathbb{R}^2-\{(\pm 1,0)\})$ whose degenerate limits are the catenoid, the helicoid, the simply and doubly periodic Scherk minimal s…
We prove that the conformal immersions of complex two tori into $S^3$ which locally minimize their conformal volume in their conformal class all satisfy some elliptic PDE. We prove that they are either minimal tori, CMC flat tori, elliptic conformally constrained minimal tori or critical point of the area under some fixed conformally congruent area. On the way to establish this result we prove that tori which are critical points of the area for perturbations within a given conformal class and which are degenerate points of the conformal class mapping - i.e. isothermic - are either minimal surf…
Extending work of Kapouleas and Yang, for any integers $N \geq 2$, $k, \ell \geq 1$, and $m$ sufficiently large, we apply gluing methods to construct in the round $3$-sphere a closed embedded minimal surface that has genus $k\ell m^2(N-1)+1$ and is invariant under a $D_{km} \times D_{\ell m}$ subgroup of $O(4)$, where $D_n$ is the dihedral group of order $2n$. Each such surface resembles the union of $N$ nested topological tori, all small perturbations of a single Clifford torus $\mathbb{T}$, that have been connected by $k\ell m^2 (N-1)$ small catenoidal tunnels, with $k \ell m^2$ tunnels join…
For each integer $k \geq 2$, we apply gluing methods to construct sequences of minimal surfaces embedded in the round $3$-sphere. We produce two types of sequences, all desingularizing collections of intersecting Clifford tori. Sequences of the first type converge to a collection of $k$ Clifford tori intersecting with maximal symmetry along these two circles. Near each of the circles, after rescaling, the sequences converge smoothly on compact subsets to a Karcher-Scherk tower of order $k$. Sequences of the second type desingularize a collection of the same $k$ Clifford tori supplemented by an…
We associate a periodic two-dimensional Schrodinger operator to every Lagrangian torus in CP^2 and define the spectral curve of a torus as the Floquet spectrum of this operator on the zero energy level. In this event minimal Lagrangian tori correspond to potential operators. We show that Novikov-Veselov hierarchy of equations induces integrable deformations of minimal Lagrangian torus in CP^2 preserving the spectral curve. We also show that the highest flows on the space of smooth periodic solutions of the Tzizeica equation are given by the Novikov-Veselov hierarchy.
We characterize Willmore tori in the 4-sphere with nontrivial normal bundle as Twistor projections of elliptic curves in complex projective space or as inverted minimal tori (with planar ends) in Euclidean 4-space.
The study of minimal surfaces has a long history, due to the important applications. Given a fixed boundary, one wants to minimise the surface area: this can be used, for example, to minimise the area of the roof of a building. Similarly, looking for constant mean curvature (CMC) provides us with many interesting applications in physics: one of the easiest examples are soap bubbles. In this work however we occupy ourselves with minimal and constant mean curvature surfaces in the three-dimensional sphere $S^3$ and its dual space $Σ^3$. In Chapter 1 we give a brief overview of the tools of Riema…
In this paper we investigate the space of harmonic maps from a 2-torus to $\mathbb{S}^3$ using the spectral curve correspondence and Whitham deformations. In an open and dense subset of a parameter space we find that the space of harmonic maps is smooth and has dimension two. We also show that the points that correspond to minimal tori (conformal harmonic maps) are either smooth points of dimension two or singular.
The i-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a surface can be viewed as a functional on the space of Riemannian metrics of fixed area. Extremal points of these functionals correspond to surfaces admitting minimal isometric immersions into spheres. Recently, critical metrics for the first eigenvalue were classified on tori and on Klein bottles. The present paper is concerned with extremal metrics for higher eigenvalues on these surfaces. We apply a classical construction due to Lawson. The ranks of the extremal eigenvalues are obtained for the bipolar surfaces $\tilde τ_{r,k}$ of the corresponding L…
