Let $R$ be a compact, connected, orientable surface of genus $g$, $Mod_R^*$ be the extended mapping class group of $R$, $\mathcal{C}(R)$ be the complex of curves on $R$, and $\mathcal{N}(R)$ be the complex of nonseparating curves on $R$. We prove that if $g \geq 2$ and $R$ has at most $g-1$ boundary components, then a simplicial map $λ: \mathcal{N}(R) \to \mathcal{N}(R)$ is superinjective if and only if it is induced by a homeomorphism of $R$. We prove that if $g \geq 2$ and $R$ is not a closed surface of genus two then $Aut(\mathcal{N}(R))= Mod_R^*$, and if $R$ is a closed surface of genus two then $Aut(\mathcal{N}(R))= Mod_R ^* /\mathcal{C}(Mod_R^*)$. We also prove that if $g=2$ and $R$ has at most one boundary component, then a simplicial map $λ: \mathcal{C}(R) \to \mathcal{C}(R)$ is superinjective if and only if it is induced by a homeomorphism of $R$. As a corollary we prove some new results about injective homomorphisms from finite index subgroups to $Mod_R^*$. The last two results complete the author's previous results to connected orientable surfaces of genus at least two.
We show that for any periodic mapping class, there is some power which maps a nonseparating, simple closed curve to a distinct, disjoint nonseparating curve. As an application of this result, we introduce the notion of stable specific torsion length of a group element and show that the stable specific torsion length of a Dehn twist is bounded above by six.
Let S be any orientable surface of infinite genus with a finite number of boundary components. In this work we consider the curve complex C(S), the nonseparating curve complex N(S) and the Schmutz graph G(S) of S. When all the topological ends of S carry genus, we show that all elements in the automorphism groups Aut(C(S)), Aut(N(S)) and Aut(G(S)) are geometric, i.e. these groups are naturally isomorphic to the extended mapping class group MCG*(S) of the infinite surface S. Finally, we study rigidity phenomena within Aut(C(S)) and Aut(N(S))

This note is devoted to a trick which yields almost trivial proofs that certain complexes associated to topological surfaces are connected or simply connected. Applications include new proofs that the complexes of curves, separating curves, nonseparating curves, pants, and cut systems are all connected for genus $g \gg 0$. We also prove that two new complexes are connected : one involves curves which split a genus $2g$ surface into two genus $g$ pieces, and the other involves curves which are homologous to a fixed curve. The connectivity of the latter complex can be interpreted as saying the `…
On a compact oriented surface of genus $g$ with $n\geq 1$ boundary components, $δ_1, δ_2,\ldots, δ_n$, we consider positive factorizations of the boundary multitwist $t_{δ_1} t_{δ_2} \cdots t_{δ_n}$, where $t_{δ_i}$ is the positive Dehn twist about the boundary $δ_i$. We prove that for $g\geq 3$, the boundary multitwist $t_{δ_1} t_{δ_2}$ can be written as a product of arbitrarily large number of positive Dehn twists about nonseparating simple closed curves, extending a recent result of Baykur and Van Horn-Morris, who proved this result for $g\geq 8$. This fact has immediate corollaries on the …
We give new upper bounds on the stable commutator lengths of Dehn twists in mapping class groups and new lower bounds on the stable commutator lengths of Dehn twists in hyperelliptic mapping class groups. In particular, we show that the stable commutator lengths of Dehn twists about a nonseparating and a separating curve on an oriented closed surface of genus 2 are not equal to each other.
Margalit and Schleimer observed that Dehn twists on orientable surfaces have nontrivial roots. We investigate the problem of roots of a Dehn twist t_c about a nonseparating circle c in the mapping class group M(N_g) of a nonorientable surface N_g of genus g. We explore the existence of roots and, following the work of McCullough, Rajeevsarathy and Monden, give a simple arithmetic description of their conjugacy classes. We also study roots of maximal degree and prove that if we fix an odd integer n>1, then for each sufficiently large g, t_c has a root of degree n in M(N_g). Moreover, for any po…
We calculate the Heegaard Floer homologies$HF^+(M,s) for mapping tori M associated to certain surface diffeomorphisms, where s is any Spin^c structure on M whose first Chern class is non-torsion. Let gamma and delta be a pair of geometrically dual nonseparating curves on a genus g Riemann surface Sigma_g, and let sigma be a curve separating Sigma_g into components of genus 1 and g-1. Write t-gamma, t_delta, and t_sigma for the right-handed Dehn twists about each of these curves. The examples we consider are the mapping tori of the diffeomorphisms t_gamma^m circ t_delta^n for m,n in Z and that …
Let $S$ be a closed, connected, orientable surface of genus at least 3, $\mathcal{C}(S)$ be the complex of curves on $S$ and $Mod_S^*$ be the extended mapping class group of $S$. We prove that a simplicial map, $λ: \mathcal{C}(S) \to \mathcal{C}(S)$, preserves nondisjointness (i.e. if $α$ and $β$ are two vertices in $\mathcal{C}(S)$ and $i(α, β) \neq 0$, then $i(λ(α), λ(β)) \neq 0$) iff it is induced by a homeomorphism of $S$. As a corollary, we prove that if $K$ is a finite index subgroup of $Mod_S^*$ and $f: K \to Mod_S^*$ is an injective homomorphism, then $f$ is induced by a homeomorphism …
Let R be a compact, connected, orientable surface of genus g with p boundary components. Let C(R) be the complex of curves on R and Mod_R^* be the extended mapping class group of R. Suppose that either g = 2 and p > 1 or g > 2 and p >= 0. We prove that a simplicial map lambda from C(R) to C(R) is superinjective if and only if it is induced by a homeomorphism of R. As a corollary, we prove that if K is a finite index subgroup of Mod_R^* and f is an injective homomorphism from K to Mod_R^*, then f is induced by a homeomorphism of R and f has a unique extension to an automorphism of Mod_R^*. This…
In all possible cases, we prove that local embeddings between two curve complexes whose complexities do not increase from domain to codomain are induced by surface homeomorphism. This is our first main result. From this we can deduce our second, a strong local co-Hopfian result for mapping class groups.
It is proved that the stable commutator length of a Dehn twist in the mapping class group is positive and the tenth power of a Dehn twist about a nonseparating simple closed curve is a product of two commutators. As an application a new proof of the fact that the growth rate of a Dehn twist is linear is given.
Let $S_g$ denote the closed orientable surface of genus $g$. We construct exponentially many mapping class group orbits of collections of $2g+1$ simple closed curves on $S_g$ which pairwise intersect exactly once, extending a result of the first author and further answering a question of Malestein-Rivin-Theran. To distinguish such collections up to the action of the mapping class group, we analyze their dual cube complexes in the sense of Sageev. In particular, we show that for any even $k$ between $\lfloor g/2 \rfloor$ and $g$, there exists such collections whose dual cube complexes have dime…
Let $M$ be an orientable, irreducible $3$-manifold admitting a weakly reducible genus three Heegaard splitting as a minimal genus Heegaard splitting. In this article, we prove that if $[f]$, $[g]\in Mod(M)$ give the same correspondence between two isotopy classes of generalized Heegaard splittings consisting of two Heegaard splittings of genus two, say $[\mathbf{H}]\to[\mathbf{H}']$, then there exists a representative $h$ of the difference $[h]=[g]\cdot[f]^{-1}$ such that (i) $h$ preserves a suitably chosen embedding of the Heegaard surface $F'$ obtained by amalgamation from $\mathbf{H}'$ whic…
Let $N$ be a connected nonorientable surface of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures. Suppose that $g$ is odd and $g+n \geqslant 6$. We prove that the automorphism group of the complex of curves of $N$ is isomorphic to the mapping class group $\mathcal M_{N}$ of $N$.
Combinatorial aspects of the Torelli-Johnson-Morita theory of surface automorphisms are extended to certain subgroups of the mapping class groups. These subgroups are defined relative to a specified homomorphism from the fundamental group of the surface onto an arbitrary group $K$. For $K$ abelian, there is a combinatorial theory akin to the classical case, for example, providing an explicit cocycle representing the first Johnson homomophism with target $Λ^3 K$. Furthermore, the Earle class with coefficients in $K$ is represented by an explicit cocyle.
Let Mod(S) be the extended mapping class group of a surface S. For S the twice-punctured torus, we show that there exists an isomorphism of finite index subgroups of Mod(S) which is not the restriction of an inner automorphism. For S a torus with at least three punctures, we show that every injection of a finite index subgroup of Mod(S) into Mod(S) is the restriction of an inner automorphism; this completes a program begun by Irmak. For all of the above surfaces, we establish the co-Hopf property for finite index subgroups of Mod(S).
A family of interpolating graphs $\calC (S, ξ)$ of complexity $ξ$ is constructed for a surface $S$ and $-2 \leq ξ\leq ξ(S)$. For $ξ= -2, -1, ξ(S) -1$ these specialise to graphs quasi-isometric to the marking graph, the pants graph and the curve graph respectively. We generalise Theorems of Brock-Farb and Behrstock-Minsky to show that the rank of $\calC (S, ξ)$ is $r_ξ$, the largest number of disjoint copies of subsurfaces of complexity greater than $ξ$ that may be embedded in $S$. The interpolating graphs $\calC (S, ξ)$ interpolate between the pants graph and the curve graph.
Random walks on spaces with hyperbolic properties tend to sublinearly track geodesic rays which point in certain hyperbolic-like directions. Qing-Rafi-Tiozzo recently introduced the sublinearly Morse boundary and proved that this boundary is a quasi-isometry invariant which captures a notion of generic direction in a broad context. In this article, we develop the geometric foundations of sublinear Morseness in the mapping class group and Teichmüller space. We prove that their sublinearly Morse boundaries are visibility spaces and admit continuous equivariant injections into the boundary of the…
Given a genus two Heegaard splitting for a non-prime 3-manifold, we define a special subcomplex of the disk complex for one of the handlebodies of the splitting, and then show that it is contractible. As applications, first we show that the complex of Haken spheres for the splitting is contractible, which refines the results of Lei and Lei-Zhang. Secondly, we classify all the genus two Heegaard splittings for non-prime 3-manifolds, which is a generalization of the result of Montesinos-Safont. Finally, we show that the mapping class group of the splitting, called the Goeritz group, is finitely …
In this note, we fill in a gap in the literature by proving that the Teichmueller modular groups (mapping class groups) are not Poincare duality groups and the complexes of curves of surfaces have infinite homotopy type (i.e. are not homotopy equivalent to a finite CW-complex).
We prove that many normal subgroups of the extended mapping class group of a surface with punctures are geometric, that is, that their automorphism groups and abstract commensurator groups are isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. In order to apply our theorem to a normal subgroup we require that the "minimal supports" of its elements satisfy a certain complexity condition that is easy to check in practice. The key ingredient is proving that the automorphism groups of many simplicial complexes associated to punctured surfaces are isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. This r…
The Kakimizu complex is usually defined in the context of knots, where it is known to be quasi-Euclidean. We here generalize the definition of the Kakimizu complex to surfaces and 3-manifolds (with or without boundary). Interestingly, in the setting of surfaces, the complexes and the techniques turn out to replicate those used to study the Torelli group, {\it i.e.,} the "nonlinear" subgroup of the mapping class group. Our main results are that the Kakimizu complexes of a surface are contractible and that they need not be quasi-Euclidean. It follows that there exist (product) $3$-manifolds whos…
Given any modular category $\mathcal{C}$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, we extract a sequence $(M_g)_{g\geq 0}$ of $\mathcal{C}$-bimodules. We show that the Hochschild chain complex $CH(\mathcal{C};M_g)$ of $\mathcal{C}$ with coefficients in $M_g$ carries a canonical homotopy coherent projective action of the mapping class group of the surface of genus $g+1$. The ordinary Hochschild complex of $\mathcal{C}$ corresponds to $CH(\mathcal{C};M_0)$. This result is obtained as part of the following more comprehensive topological structure: We construct a symmetric monoidal functor $\mathfra…
By recognizing them as fundamental groups of developable complexes of groups we prove that mapping class groups of compact orientable surfaces have finite asymptotic dimension.
The mapping class group of a closed surface of genus $g$ is an extension of the Torelli group by the symplectic group. This leads to two natural problems: (a) compute (stably) the symplectic decomposition of the lower central series of the Torelli group and (b) compute (stably) the Poincaré polynomial of the cohomology of the mapping group with coefficients in a symplectic representation $V$. Using ideas from graph cohomology, we give an effective computation of the symplectic decomposition of the quadratic dual of the lower central series of the Torelli group, and assuming the later is Kozsul…
The first aim of this paper is to give four types of examples of surface bundles over surfaces with non-zero signature. The first example is with base genus 2, a prescribed signature, a 0-section and the fiber genus greater than a certain number which depends on the signature. This provides a new upper bound on the minimal base genus for fixed signature and fiber genus. The second one gives a new asymptotic upper bound for this number in the case that fiber genus is odd. The third one has a small Euler characteristic. The last is a non-holomorphic example. The second aim is to improve upper bo…
Suppose $X$ and $Y$ are finite complexes, with $Y$ simply connected. Gromov conjectured that the number of mapping classes in $[X,Y]$ which can be realized by $L$-Lipschitz maps grows asymptotically as $L^α$, where $α$ is an integer determined by the rational homotopy type of $Y$ and the rational cohomology of $X$. This conjecture was disproved in a recent paper of the author and Weinberger; we gave an example where the `predicted' growth is $L^8$ but the true growth is $L^8\log L$. Here we show, via a different mechanism, that the universe of possible such growth functions is quite large. In …
We prove that if a normal subgroup of the extended mapping class group of a closed surface has an element of sufficiently small support then its automorphism group and abstract commensurator group are both isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. The proof relies on another theorem we prove, which states that many simplicial complexes associated to a closed surface have automorphism group isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. These results resolve the metaconjecture of N.V. Ivanov, which asserts that any "sufficiently rich" object associated to a surface has automorphism group…
We study the large scale geometry of mapping class groups MCG(S), using hyperbolicity properties of curve complexes. We show that any self quasi-isometry of MCG(S) (outside a few sporadic cases) is a bounded distance away from a left-multiplication, and as a consequence obtain quasi-isometric rigidity for MCG(S), namely that groups quasi-isometric to MCG(S) are virtually equal to it. (The latter theorem was proved by Hamenstadt using different methods). As part of our approach we obtain several other structural results: a description of the tree-graded structure on the asymptotic cone of MCG(S…
We prove that curve complexes of surfaces are finitely rigid: for every orientable surface S of finite topological type, we identify a finite subcomplex X of the curve complex C(S) such that every locally injective simplicial map from X into C(S) is the restriction of an element of Aut(C(S)), unique up to the (finite) point-wise stabilizer of X in Aut(C(S)). Furthermore, if S is not a twice-punctured torus, then we can replace Aut(C(S)) in this statement with the extended mapping class group.
In the context of CAT(0) cubical groups, we develop an analogue of the theory of curve complexes and subsurface projections. The role of the subsurfaces is played by a collection of convex subcomplexes called a \emph{factor system}, and the role of the curve graph is played by the \emph{contact graph}. There are a number of close parallels between the contact graph and the curve graph, including hyperbolicity, acylindricity of the action, the existence of hierarchy paths, and a Masur--Minsky-style distance formula. We then define a \emph{hierarchically hyperbolic space}; the class of such spac…
We show that any isomorphism between mapping class groups of orientable infinite-type surfaces is induced by a homeomorphism between the surfaces. Our argument additionally applies to automorphisms between finite-index subgroups of these `big' mapping class groups and shows that each finite-index subgroup has finite outer automorphism group. As a key ingredient, we prove that all simplicial automorphisms between curve complexes of infinite-type orientable surfaces are induced by homeomorphisms.
The primary purpose of this paper concerns the relation of (compact) generalized manifolds to finite Poincaré duality complexes (PD complexes). The problem is that an arbitrary generalized manifold $X$ is always an ENR space, but it is not necessarily a complex. Moreover, finite PD complexes require the Poincaré duality with coefficients in the group ring $Λ$ ($Λ$-complexes). Standard homology theory implies that $X$ is a $\mathbb{Z}$-PD complex. Therefore by Browder's theorem, $X$ has a Spivak normal fibration which in turn, determines a Thom class of the pair $(N,\partial N)$ of a mapping cy…
After Fossas-Parlier, we consider two graphs $\mathcal{G}_{0}(S)$ and $\mathcal{G}_{\infty}(S)$, constructed from multicurves on connected, orientable surfaces of infinite-type. Our first result asserts that $\mathcal{G}_{\infty}(S)$ has finite diameter, which extends a result of Fossas-Parlier. Next, we prove that the group of (label-preserving) automorphisms of $\mathcal{G}_{0}(S)$ is the extended mapping class group of $S$, which may be regarded as an infinite-type analog of a theorem of Margalit about pants complexes.
This survey is concerned with random walks on mapping class groups. We illustrate how the actions of mapping class groups on Teichmüller spaces or curve complexes reveal the nature of random walks, and vice versa. Our emphasis is on the analogues of classical theorems, including laws of large numbers and central limit theorems, and the properties of harmonic measures, under optimal moment conditions. We also explain the geometric analogy between Gromov hyperbolic spaces and Teichmüller spaces that has been used to copy the properties of random walks from one to the other.
This is a (very subjective) survey paper for nonspecialists covering group actions on Gromov hyperbolic spaces. The first section is about hyperbolic groups themselves, while the rest of the paper focuses on mapping class groups and $Out(F_n)$, and the way to understand their large scale geometry using their actions on various hyperbolic spaces constructed using projection complexes. This understanding for $Out(F_n)$ significantly lags behind that of mapping class groups and the paper ends with a few open questions.
In two seminal papers Kontsevich used a construction called_graph homology_ as a bridge between certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras and various topological objects, including moduli spaces of curves, the group of outer automorphisms of a free group, and invariants of odd dimensional manifolds. In this paper, we show that Kontsevich's graph complexes, which include graph complexes studied earlier by Culler and Vogtmann and by Penner, have a rich algebraic structure. We define a Lie bracket and cobracket on graph complexes, and in fact show that they are Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras, and th…
In this work, we study the asymptotic geometry of the mapping class group and Teichmueller space. We introduce tools for analyzing the geometry of `projection' maps from these spaces to curve complexes of subsurfaces; from this we obtain information concerning the topology of their asymptotic cones. We deduce several applications of this analysis. One of which is that the asymptotic cone of the mapping class group of any surface is tree-graded in the sense of Drutu and Sapir; this tree-grading has several consequences including answering a question of Drutu and Sapir concerning relatively hype…
We study dismantling properties of the arc, disc and sphere graphs. We prove that any finite subgroup H of the mapping class group of a surface with punctures, the handlebody group, or Out(F_n) fixes a filling (resp. simple) clique in the appropriate graph. We deduce realisation theorems, in particular the Nielsen Realisation Problem in the case of a nonempty set of punctures. We also prove that infinite H have either empty or contractible fixed point sets in the corresponding complexes. Furthermore, we show that their spines are classifying spaces for proper actions for mapping class groups a…
We prove the equivalence between a relative bottleneck property and being quasi-isometric to a tree-graded space. As a consequence, we deduce that the quasi-trees of spaces defined axiomatically by Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara are quasi-isometric to tree-graded spaces. Using this we prove that mapping class groups quasi-isometrically embed into a finite product of simplicial trees. In particular, these groups have finite Assouad-Nagata dimension, direct embeddings exhibiting $\ell^p$ compression exponent $1$ for all $p\geq 1$ and they quasi-isometrically embed into $\ell^1(\mathbb N)$. We deduce…
Homological stability for sequences of groups is often proved by studying the spectral sequence associated to the action of a typical group in the sequence on a highly-connected simplicial complex whose stabilizers are related to previous groups in the sequence. In the case of mapping class groups of manifolds, suitable simplicial complexes can be made using isotopy classes of various geometric objects in the manifold. In this paper we focus on the case of surfaces and show that by using more refined geometric objects consisting of certain configurations of curves with arcs that tether these c…
