For $S=S_{g,n}$ a closed orientable differentiable surface of genus $g$ from which $n$ points have been removed, such that $χ(S)=2-2g-n<0$, let $\mathrm{P}Γ(S)$ be the pure mapping class group of $S$ and $\mathrm{P}\widehatΓ(S)$ and $\mathrm{P}\checkΓ(S)$ be, respectively, its profinite and its congruence completions, the latter being identified with the image of the natural representation $\mathrm{P}\widehatΓ(S)\to\operatorname{Out}({\widehatπ}_1(S))$ (where ${\widehatπ}_1(S)$ is the profinite completion of the fundamental group of $S$). We determine the automorphism groups of procongruence completions under a natural rigidity condition, and show that the profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group embeds into the outer automorphism group of the profinite completion.
Let $\operatorname{Out}^{\mathbb{I}_0}(\mathrm{P}\widehatΓ(S))$ and $\operatorname{Out}^{\mathbb{I}_0}(\mathrm{P}\checkΓ(S))$ be the groups of outer automorphisms which preserve the conjugacy class of a procyclic subgroup generated by a nonseparating Dehn twist (a condition trivially satisfied for $g=0$). Our main result gives that, for $χ(S)<g-2$ and $(g,n)\neq (1,2)$, there is a natural isomorphism: \[\operatorname{Out}^{\mathbb{I}_0}(\mathrm{P}\checkΓ(S))\congΣ_n\times\widehat{\operatorname{GT}},\] where $Σ_{n}$ is the symmetric group on $n$ letters and $\widehat{\operatorname{GT}}$ denotes the profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group. We also prove that, for $χ(S)<g-2$, there is a natural faithful representation $\widehat{\operatorname{GT}}\hookrightarrow\operatorname{Out}^{\mathbb{I}_0}(\mathrm{P}\widehatΓ(S))$.
In this paper we determine the automorphism groups of the profinite braid groups with four or more strings in terms of the profinite Grothendieck-Teichmüller group.
It is proved that the profinite completion of the mapping class group Mod (g,n) of a surface of genus g with n boundary components is isomorphic to such of the arithmetic group GL(6g-6+2n, Z). We establish a relation between the normal subgroups of Mod (g,n) and the absolute Galois group G(K) of a number field K. Using the Tits alternative, we prove the Shafarevich Conjecture saying that the group G(Q^ab) of the maximal abelian extension of the field of rationals is isomorphic to a free profinite group.
In this paper we study some consequences of the author's classification of graph manifolds by their profinite fundamental groups. In particular we study commensurability, the behaviour of knots, and relation to mapping classes. We prove that the exteriors of graph knots are distinguished among all 3-manifold groups by their profinite fundamental groups. We also prove a strong conjugacy separability result for certain mapping classes of surfaces.
Using quantum representations of mapping class groups we prove that profinite completions of Burnside-type surface group quotients are not virtually prosolvable, in general. Further, we construct infinitely many finite simple characteristic quotients of surface groups.
Let Ng be the connected closed nonorientable surface of genus g >= 5 and Mod(Ng) denote the mapping class group of Ng. We prove that the outer automorphism group of Mod(Ng) is either trivial or Z if g is odd, and injects into the mapping class group of sphere with four holes if g is even.
We show that the natural map from the mapping class groups of surfaces to the automorphism groups of free groups, induces an infinite loop map on the classifying spaces of the stable groups after plus construction. The proof uses automorphisms of free groups with boundaries which play the role of mapping class groups of surfaces with several boundary components.
Let $G$ be the mapping torus of a polynomially growing automorphism of a finitely generated free group. We determine which epimorphisms from $G$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ have finitely generated kernel, and we compute the rank of the kernel. We thus describe all possible ways of expressing $G$ as the mapping torus of a free group automorphism. This is similar to the case for 3--manifold groups, and different from the case of mapping tori of exponentially growing free group automorphisms. The proof uses a hierarchical decomposition of $G$ and requires determining the Bieri-Neumann-Strebel invariant of th…
Fix a prime number ell. In this paper we develop the theory of relative pro-ell completion of discrete and profinite groups -- a natural generalization of the classical notion of pro-ell completion -- and show that the pro-ell completion of the Torelli group does not inject into the relative pro-ell completion of the corresponding mapping class group when the genus is at least 3. As an application, we prove that when g > 2, the action of the pro-ell completion of the Torelli group T_{g,1} on the pro-ell fundamental group of a pointed genus g surface is not faithful. The choice of a first-order…
We analyze the mapping class group of extendible automorphisms of the exterior boundary W of a compression body of dimension 3 or 4, which extend over the compression body (Q,V), where V is the interior boundary. Those that extend as automorphisms of (Q,V) rel V are called discrepant automorphisms, forming the mapping class group of discrepant automorphisms of W in Q. We describe a short exact sequence of these mapping class groups. For an orientable, compact, reducible 3 manifold W, there is a canonical "maximal" 4-dimensional compression body Q whose exterior boundary is W and whose interior…
Let $S$ be a nonorientable surface of genus $g\ge 5$ with $n\ge 0$ punctures, and $\Mcg(S)$ its mapping class group. We define the complexity of $S$ to be the maximum rank of a free abelian subgroup of $\Mcg(S)$. Suppose that $S_1$ and $S_2$ are two such surfaces of the same complexity. We prove that every isomorphism $\Mcg(S_1)\to\Mcg(S_2)$ is induced by a diffeomorphism $S_1\to S_2$. This is an analogue of Ivanov's theorem on automorphisms of the mapping class groups of an orientable surface, and also an extension and improvement of the first author's previous result.
For every irreducible automorphism $ϕ\in\text{SL}_3({\mathbb Z})$ of the $3$-torus, for which the product of the expanding eigenvalues is positive, we construct a pseudo-Anosov mapping $f$ of an associated surface, semi-conjugate and almost-isomorphic to $ϕ$, whose stretch factor is the product of the expanding eigenvalues of $ϕ$. This shows that any norm-$1$ cubic Pisot number occurs as the stretch factor of a pseudo-Anosov mapping, proving a conjecture of Fried in degree $3$. A similar construction works for the $4$-torus on condition that $ϕ$ has exactly two eigenvalues outside the unit cir…
In this paper, we study the relationship between the mapping class group of an infinite-type surface and the simultaneous flip graph, a variant of the flip graph for infinite-type surfaces defined by Fossas and Parlier. We show that the extended mapping class group is isomorphic to a proper subgroup of the automorphism group of the flip graph, unlike in the finite-type case. This shows that Ivanov's metaconjecture, which states that any "sufficiently rich" object associated to a finite-type surface has the extended mapping class group as its automorphism group, does not extend to simultaneous …
We show that the extended based mapping class group of an infinite-type surface is naturally isomorphic to the automorphism group of the loop graph of that surface. Additionally, we show that the extended mapping class group stabilizing a finite set of punctures is isomorphic to the arc graph relative to that finite set of punctures. This extends a known result for sufficiently complex finite-type surfaces, and provides a new angle from which to study the mapping class groups of infinite-type surfaces.
We show that any isomorphism between mapping class groups of orientable infinite-type surfaces is induced by a homeomorphism between the surfaces. Our argument additionally applies to automorphisms between finite-index subgroups of these `big' mapping class groups and shows that each finite-index subgroup has finite outer automorphism group. As a key ingredient, we prove that all simplicial automorphisms between curve complexes of infinite-type orientable surfaces are induced by homeomorphisms.
We prove that the mapping torus group $\FN \rtimes_α \Z$ of any automorphism $α$ of a free group $\FN$ of finite rank $n \geq 2$ is weakly hyperbolic relative to the canonical (up to conjugation) family $\mathcal H(α)$ of subgroups of $\FN$ which consists of (and contains representatives of all) conjugacy classes that grow polynomially under iteration of $α$. Furthermore, we show that $\FN \rtimes_α \Z$ is strongly hyperbolic relative to the mapping torus of the family $\mathcal H(α)$. As an application, we use a result of Drutu-Sapir to deduce that $\FN \rtimes_α \Z$ has Rapic Decay.
The mapping class group of a Heegaard splitting is the group of automorphisms of the ambient 3-manifold that take the surface onto itself, modulo isotopies that keep the surface on itself. We characterize the mapping classes that restrict to periodic and reducible automorphisms of the surface.
The mapping class group of a Heegaard splitting is the group of connected components in the set of automorphisms of the ambient manifold that map the Heegaard surface onto itself. For the genus three Heegaard splitting of the 3-torus, we find an eight element generating set for this group. Six of these generators induce generating elements of the mapping class group of the 3-torus and the remaining two are isotopy trivial in the 3-torus.
We prove that if a normal subgroup of the extended mapping class group of a closed surface has an element of sufficiently small support then its automorphism group and abstract commensurator group are both isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. The proof relies on another theorem we prove, which states that many simplicial complexes associated to a closed surface have automorphism group isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. These results resolve the metaconjecture of N.V. Ivanov, which asserts that any "sufficiently rich" object associated to a surface has automorphism group…
We compute the rational stable homology of the automorphism groups of free nilpotent groups. These groups interpolate between the general linear groups over the ring of integers and the automorphism groups of free groups, and we employ functor homology to reduce to the abelian case. As an application, we also compute the rational stable homology of the outer automorphism groups and of the mapping class groups of the associated aspherical nil-manifolds in the TOP, PL, and DIFF categories.
Thanks to a theorem of Brock on comparison of Weil-Petersson translation distances and hyperbolic volumes of mapping tori for pseudo-Anosovs, we prove that the entropy of a surface automorphism in general has linear bounds in terms of Gromov norm of its mapping torus from below and in bounded geometry case from above. We also prove that the Weil-Petersson translation distance does the same from both sides in general. The proofs are in fact immediately derived from the theorem of Brock together with some other strong theorems and small observations.
The braided Thompson group $\mathcal B$ is an asymptotic mapping class group of a sphere punctured along the standard Cantor set, endowed with a rigid structure. Inspired from the case of finite type surfaces we consider a Hatcher-Thurston cell complex whose vertices are asymptotically trivial pants decompositions. We prove that the automorphism group $\hat{\mathcal B^{\frac{1}{2}}}$ of this complex is also an asymptotic mapping class group in a weaker sense. Moreover $\hat{\mathcal B^{\frac{1}{2}}}$ is obtained by $\mathcal B$ by first adding new elements called half-twists and further comple…
Recently there has been renewed interest in the mapping-class group of a compact surface of genus $g \ge 2$ and also in its finite order elements. A finite order element of the mapping-class group will be a conformal automorphisms on some Riemann surface of genus $g$. Here we give the details of the proof that there is an {\sl adapted basis} for any conformal automorphism of prime order on a surface of genus $g$ and extend the original result to apply to fixed point free automorphisms. An adapted basis is one that reflects the action of the automorphism in the optimal manner described below. T…
Let $N$ be a connected nonorientable surface of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures. Suppose that $g$ is odd and $g+n \geqslant 6$. We prove that the automorphism group of the complex of curves of $N$ is isomorphic to the mapping class group $\mathcal M_{N}$ of $N$.
In this paper, it is shown that any surface automorphism of positive mapping-class entropy possesses a virtual homological eigenvalue which lies outside the unit circle of the complex plane.
A complex of incompressible surfaces in a handlebody is constructed so that it contains, as a subcomplex, the complex of curves of the boundary of the handlebody. For genus 2 handlebodies, the group of automorphisms of this complex is used to characterize the mapping class group of the handlebody. In particular, it is shown that all automorphisms of the complex of incompressible surfaces are geometric, that is, induced by a homeomorphism of the handlebody.
Given any connected compact orientable surface, a pair of mapping classes are said to be procongruently conjugate if they induce a conjugate pair of outer automophisms on the profinite completion of the fundamental group of the surface. For example, this occurs if they induce conjugate outer automorphisms on every characteristic finite quotient of the fundamental group. In this paper, it is shown that every procongruent conjugacy class of mapping classes, as a subset of the surface mapping class group, is the disjoint union of at most finitely many conjugacy classes of mapping classes. For any…
We prove that many normal subgroups of the extended mapping class group of a surface with punctures are geometric, that is, that their automorphism groups and abstract commensurator groups are isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. In order to apply our theorem to a normal subgroup we require that the "minimal supports" of its elements satisfy a certain complexity condition that is easy to check in practice. The key ingredient is proving that the automorphism groups of many simplicial complexes associated to punctured surfaces are isomorphic to the extended mapping class group. This r…
A normal subgroup of the (extended) mapping class group of a surface is said to be geometric if its automorphism group is the mapping class group. We prove that in the case of the Cantor tree surface, every normal subgroup is geometric. We note that there is no non-trivial finite-type mapping class group for which this statement is true. We study a generalisation of the curve graph, proving that its automorphism group is again the mapping class group. This strategy is adapted from that of Brendle-Margalit and the author for certain normal subgroups in the finite-type setting.
Building on work of Farb and the second author, we prove that the group of automorphisms of the fine curve graph for a surface is isomorphic to the group of homeomorphisms of the surface. This theorem is analogous to the seminal result of Ivanov that the group of automorphisms of the (classical) curve graph is isomorphic to the extended mapping class group of the corresponding surface.
We define and discuss a notion called fibered commensurability of outer automorphisms of free groups. This notion lets us study symmetry of outer automorphisms. The notion of fibered commensurability is first defined by Calegari-Sun-Wang on mapping class groups. The Nielsen-Thurston type of mapping classes is a commensurability invariant. One of the important facts of fibered commensurability on mapping class groups is for the case of pseudo-Anosovs, there is a unique minimal element in each fibered commensurability class. For outer automorphisms, we first show that being atoroidal and fully i…
Dilation surfaces, or twisted quadratic differentials, are variants of translation surfaces. In this paper, we study the question of what elements or subgroups of the mapping class group can be realized as affine automorphisms of dilation surfaces. We show that dilation surfaces can have exotic Dehn twists in their affine automorphism groups and will establish that only certain types of mapping class group elements can arise as affine automorphisms of dilation surfaces. We also generalize a construction of Thurston that constructs a translation surface from a pair of filling multicurves to dil…
We consider a planar surface Σof infinite type which has the Thompson group T as asymptotic mapping class group. We construct the asymptotic pants complex C of Σand prove that the group T acts transitively by automorphisms on it. Finally, we establish that the automorphism group of the complex C is an extension of the Thompson group T by Z/2Z.
Using the canonical JSJ splitting, we describe the outer automorphism group $\Out(G)$ of a one-ended word hyperbolic group $G$. In particular, we discuss to what extent $\Out(G)$ is virtually a direct product of mapping class groups and a free abelian group, and we determine for which groups $\Out(G)$ is infinite. We also show that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of torsion elements in $\Out(G)$, for $G$ any torsion-free hyperbolic group. More generally, let $Γ$ be a finite graph of groups decomposition of an arbitrary group $G$ such that edge groups $G_e$ are rigid (i.e\. $\Out…
We prove that the homology of the mapping class group of any 3-manifold stabilizes under connected sum and boundary connected sum with an arbitrary 3-manifold when both manifolds are compact and orientable. The stabilization also holds for the quotient group by twists along spheres and disks, and includes as particular cases homological stability for symmetric automorphisms of free groups, automorphisms of certain free products, and handlebody mapping class groups. Our methods also apply to manifolds of other dimensions in the case of stabilization by punctures.
We compute the automorphism groups of the Torelli complex and the complex of separating curves for all but finitely many compact orientable surfaces. As an application, we show that the abstract commensurators of the Torelli group and the Johnson kernel for such surfaces are naturally isomorphic to the extended mapping class group.
In this paper, we prove that each automorphism of a surface braid group is induced by a homeomorphism of the underlying surface, provided that this surface is a closed, connected, orientable surface of genus at least 2, and the number of strings is at least three. This result generalizes previous results for classical braid groups, mapping class groups, and Torelli groups.
The group of 2-by-2 matrices with integer entries and determinant $\pm > 1$ can be identified either with the group of outer automorphisms of a rank two free group or with the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of a 2-dimensional torus. Thus this group is the beginning of three natural sequences of groups, namely the general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}(n,\Z)$, the groups of outer automorphisms of free groups of rank $n\geq 2$, and the mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Much of the work on mapping class groups and automorphisms of free groups is motivate…
Combinatorial aspects of the Torelli-Johnson-Morita theory of surface automorphisms are extended to certain subgroups of the mapping class groups. These subgroups are defined relative to a specified homomorphism from the fundamental group of the surface onto an arbitrary group $K$. For $K$ abelian, there is a combinatorial theory akin to the classical case, for example, providing an explicit cocycle representing the first Johnson homomophism with target $Λ^3 K$. Furthermore, the Earle class with coefficients in $K$ is represented by an explicit cocyle.
In this paper we find a unique normal form for the symplectic matrix representation of the conjugacy class of a prime order element of the mapping-class group. We find a set of generators for the fundamental group of a surface with a conformal automorphism of prime order which reflects the action the automorphism in an optimal way. This is called an {\sl adapted} homotopy basis and there is a corresponding {\sl adapted presentation}. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a prime order symplectic matrix to be the image of a prime order element in the mapping-class group.
