Scheme-theoretic methods are used to classify ternary quadratic forms with values in line bundles over arbitrary schemes and to canonically determine the isomorphisms between them. The association of a quadratic bundle to its even Clifford algebra induces a natural bijection from the set of equivalence classes of line-bundle-valued quadratic forms on rank 3 vector bundles upto tensoring by twisted discriminant bundles and the set of isomorphism classes of schematic specialisations of rank 4 Azumaya bundles over any fixed scheme X. This statement is a limiting version of the following statement: the set of orbits of Disc(X) in the 1-cohomology of X in the fppf topology with values in O(3) is in bijection with the 1-cohomology with values in PGL(2). The various orthogonal groups of a quadratic bundle are canonically determined in terms of the automorphisms of its even Clifford algebra. Any automorphism of the latter arises from a similarity, and in fact from an orthogonal transformation if its determinant is a square. The special orthogonal group is thus identified with the subgroup of automorphisms with trivial determinant. A specialised algebra arises from a honest quadratic form iff its determinant has a square root and arises from a bilinear form iff the line subbundle generated by 1 is a direct summand.
We prove that the relative log de Rham cohomology groups of a projective semistable log smooth degeneration admit a natural \textit{limiting} mixed Hodge structure. More precisely, we construct a family of increasing filtrations and a family of nilpotent endomorphisms on the relative log de Rham cohomology groups and show that they satisfy a part of good properties of a nilpotnet orbit in several variables.
We introduce a "limiting Frobenius structure" attached to any degeneration of projective varieties over a finite field of characteristic p which satisfies a p-adic lifting assumption. Our limiting Frobenius structure is shown to be effectively computable in an appropriate sense for a degeneration of projective hypersurfaces. We conjecture that the limiting Frobenius structure relates to the rigid cohomology of a semistable limit of the degeneration through an analogue of the Clemens-Schmidt exact sequence. Our construction is illustrated, and conjecture supported, by a selection of explicit ex…
This paper is a sequel to [Ga1]. We study the semi-infinite category on the Ran version of the affine Grassmannian, and study a particular object in it that we call the semi-infinite intersection cohomology sheaf. Unlike the situation of [Ga1], this version of the semi-infinite intersection IC sheaf is defined as the middle of extension of the constant (more precisely, dualizing) sheaf on the basic stratum, in a certain t-structure. We give several explicit description and characterizations of our semi-infinite intersection IC sheaf: we describe its !- and *- stalks; we present it explicitly a…
We construct a polarization on the relative log de Rham cohomology groups of a projective log deformation. To this end, we study the behavior of weight and Hodge filtrations under the cup product and construct a trace morphism for a log deformation.
In this article, we propose noncommutative versions of Tate conjecture and Hodge conjecture. If we consider these conjectures for a dg-category of perfect complexes over a certain schemes $X$, then they are equivalent to the classical Tate and Hodge conjectures for $X$ respectively. We also propose a strategy of how to prove these conjectures by utilizing a version of motivic Bass conjecture.
In 1986, Spencer Bloch gave an abstract definition of a (regulator) map from higher Chow groups to Deligne-Beilinson cohomology. This map can be defined on the underlying complexes, and Kerr, Lewis and Müller-Stach gave an explicit description of this map in terms of currents. Using a multiplicative version of the Deligne complex, we give a commutative version of this map.
In this paper we construct a spectral sequence computing a modified version of morphic cohomology of a toric variety (even when it is singular) in terms of combinatorial data coming from the fan of the toric variety.
We construct a geometric version of BRST cohomology complex of a chiral module over a Lie-* algebra using the language of differential graded Lie algebroids in the category of D-modules on a compact curve $X$.
To a coarse structure we associate a Grothendieck topology which is determined by coarse covers. A coarse map between coarse spaces gives rise to a morphism of Grothendieck topologies. This way we define sheaves and sheaf cohomology on coarse spaces. We obtain that sheaf cohomology is a functor on the coarse category: if two coarse maps are close they induce the same map in cohomology. There is a coarse version of a Mayer-Vietoris sequence and for every inclusion of coarse spaces there is a coarse version of relative cohomology. Cohomology with constant coefficients can be computed using the n…
We develop a formalism involving Atiyah classes of sheaves on a smooth manifold, Hochschild chain and cochain complexes. As an application we prove a version of the Riemann--Roch theorem.
Deligne cohomology can be viewed as a differential refinement of integral cohomology, hence captures both topological and geometric information. On the other hand, it can be viewed as the simplest nontrivial version of a differential cohomology theory. While more involved differential cohomology theories have been explicitly twisted, the same has not been done to Deligne cohomology, although existence is known at a general abstract level. We work out what it means to twist Deligne cohomology, by taking degree one twists of both integral cohomology and de Rham cohomology. We present the main pr…
We prove a duality theorem for graded algebras over a field that implies several known duality results : graded local duality, versions of Serre duality for local cohomology and of Suzuki duality for generalized local cohomology, and Herzog-Rahimi bigraded duality.
Results in the preliminary version have been strengthed. In addition, Batyrev's conjectural formula for quantum cohomology of projective bundles associated to direct sum of line bundles over $\Pee^n$ is partially verified.
We examine various versions of oriented cohomology and Borel-Moore homology theories in algebraic geometry and put these two together in the setting of an "oriented duality theory", a generalization of Bloch-Ogus twisted duality theory. This combines and exends work of Panin and Mocanasu. We apply this to give a Borel-Moore homology version $MGL'_{*,*}$ of Voevodsky's $MGL^{*,*}$-theory, and a natural map $\vartheta:Ω_*\to MGL'_{2*,*}$, where $Ω_*$ is the algebraic cobordism theory defined by Levine-Morel. We conjecture that $\vartheta$ is an isomorphism and describe a program for proving this…
We construct and study some vertex theoretic invariants associated to Poisson varieties, specialising in the conformal weight $0$ case to the familiar package of Poisson homology and cohomology. In order to do this conceptually we sketch a version of the \emph{calculus}, in the sense of \cite{TT}, adapted to the context of vertex algebras. We obtain the standard theorems of Poisson (co)homology in this \emph{chiral} context. This is part of a larger project related to promoting non-commutative geometric structures to chiral versions of such.
This note corrects a certain construction in (the old version of) the paper [GL]. The construction in question starts from a Brylinski-Deligne datum, which is an extension of a group G by K_2, and produces a factorization line bundle on the affine Grassmannian of the group G.
We completely revised the paper after the referee's comments. In the new version, we replaced two erroneous examples, studied a link with earlier work of Koh and Stilmann, and strengthened the main theorem.
We show that for $p$small highest weight $λ$, 1) there is a $\Z_p$-integral version of the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand complex, still a direct summand subcomplex of the standard complex for $V(λ)$ 2) Similarly, a $\Z_p$-integral (as well as a mod. p) version of Kostant formula holds true. This paper is a companion paper to the one by Mokrane-Tilouine (AG, subm. 12/12/00), where these results are requested.
We compute the generalized slices (as defined by Spitzweck-Østvær) of the motivic spectrum KO (representing hermitian K-theory) in terms of motivic cohomology and (a version of) generalized motivic cohomology, obtaining good agreement with the situation in classical topology and the results predicted by Markett-Schlichting. As an application, we compute the homotopy sheaves of (this version of) generalized motivic cohomology, which establishes a version of a conjecture of Morel.
We develop an integral version of Deligne cohomology for smooth proper real varieties. For this purpose the role played by singular cohomology in the complex case has to be replaced by ordinary bigraded G-equivariant cohomology, where G=Gal(C/R). This is the G-equivariant counterpart of singular cohomology. We establish the basic properties of the theory and give a geometric interpretation for the groups in dimension 2 in weights 1 and 2.
Thomason's étale descent theorem for Bott periodic algebraic $K$-theory \cite{aktec} is generalized to any $MGL$ module over a regular Noetherian scheme of finite dimension. Over arbitrary Noetherian schemes of finite dimension, this generalizes the analog of Thomason's theorem for Weibel's homotopy $K$-theory. This is achieved by amplifying the effects from the case of motivic cohomology, using the slice spectral sequence in the case of the universal example of algebraic cobordism. We also obtain integral versions of these statements: Bousfield localization at étale motivic cohomology is the …
This is the first in a series of papers in which we construct and study a new $p$-adic cohomology theory for varieties over Laurent series fields $k(\!(t)\!)$ in characteristic $p$. This will be a version of rigid cohomology, taking values in the bounded Robba ring $\mathcal{E}_K^\dagger$, and in this paper, we give the basic definitions and constructions. The cohomology theory we define can be viewed as a relative version of Berthelot's rigid cohomology, and is constructed by compactifying $k(\!(t)\!)$-varieties as schemes over $k[\![ t]\!]$ rather than over $k(\!(t)\!)$. We reprove the found…
We construct a relative version of the $A_{\rm inf}$-cohomology theory developed by Bhatt-Morrow-Scholze and relate it to the prismatic theory of Bhatt-Scholze. The construction relies on the fiber product of topoi. As an application we show that there is an étale comparison of the $q$-crystalline pushforward after inverting $μ\in A_{\rm inf}$.
We prove equivariant versions of the Beilinson-Lichtenbaum conjecture for Bredon motivic cohomology of smooth complex and real varieties with an action of the group of order two. This identifies equivariant motivic and topological invariants in a large range of degrees.
Using results of Gathmann, we prove the following theorem: If a smooth projective variety X has generically semisimple (p,p)-quantum cohomology, then the same is true for the blow-up of X at any number of points. This a successful test for a modified version of Dubrovin's conjecture from the ICM 1998.
For a local complete intersection subvariety $X=V({\mathcal I})$ in ${\mathbb P}^n$ over a field of characteristic zero, we show that, in cohomological degrees smaller than the codimension of the singular locus of $X$, the cohomology of vector bundles on the formal completion of ${\mathbb P}^n$ along $X$ can be effectively computed as the cohomology on any sufficiently high thickening $X_t=V({\mathcal I^t})$; the main ingredient here is a positivity result for the normal bundle of $X$. Furthermore, we show that the Kodaira vanishing theorem holds for all thickenings $X_t$ in the same range of …
We show that in positive characteristic special loci of deformation spaces of rank one $\ell$-adic local systems are quasilinear. From this we deduce the Hard Lefschetz theorem for rank one $\ell$-adic local systems and a generic vanishing theorem. Last version: a few typos corrected
The proof of Theorem 7.12 of "Uniqueness of smooth cohomology theories" by the authors of this note is not correct. The said theorem identifies the flat part of a differential extension of a generalized cohomology theory E with ER/Z (there called "smooth extension"). In this note, we give a correct proof. Moreover, we prove slightly stronger versions of some of the other results of that paper.
The rational cohomology of the moduli space of rank two, odd degree stable bundles over a curve (of genus g > 1) has been studied intensely in recent years and in particular the invariant subring generated by Newstead's generators alpha, beta, gamma. Several authors have independently found a minimal complete set of relations for this subring. Their methods are very different from the methods originally employed by Kirwan to prove Mumford's conjecture -- that relations derived from the vanishing Chern classes of a particular rank 2g-1 bundle are a complete set of relations for the entire cohom…
We develop a geometric version of the circle method and use it to compute the compactly supported cohomology of the space of rational curves through a point on a smooth affine hypersurface of sufficiently low degree.
We construct a cohomology theory with compact support H^i_c(X_ar,Z(n))$ for separated schemes of finite type over a finite field, which should play a role analog to Lichtenbaum's Weil-etale cohomology groups for smooth and projective schemes. In particular, if Tate's conjecture holds and rational and numerical equivalence agree up to torsion, then the groups H^i_c(X_ar,Z(n)) are finitely generated, form an integral version of l-adic cohomology with compact support, and admit a formula for the special values of the zeta-function of X.
We explain how the generalized Milnor-Wood inequality for reductive representations of a cocompact complex-hyperbolic lattice into a Hermitian Lie group translates, under the non-abelian Hodge correspondence, into various kinds of Milnor-Wood inequalities for Higgs bundles. This clarifies the relation between the representation theoretic generalized Milnor-Wood inequality and the various different versions of Milnor-Wood inequalities for Higgs bundles that are known in the literature.
