We derive a new maximal inequality for stationary sequences under a martingale-type condition introduced by Maxwell and Woodroofe [Ann. Probab. 28 (2000) 713-724]. Then, we apply it to establish the Donsker invariance principle for this class of stationary sequences. A Markov chain example is given in order to show the optimality of the conditions imposed.
For a sequence $\{X_{n}, \, n \geqslant 1 \}$ of random variables satisfying $\mathbb{E} \lvert X_{n} \rvert < \infty$ for all $n \geqslant 1$, a maximal inequality is established, and used to obtain strong law of large numbers for dependent random variables.
The paper considers the martingale theory in the $G$-framework. A form of Doob's optional sampling is established, which allows to prove the exact analogue of the classical maximal inequality. The obtained results are used to improve the existing $G$-martingale representation theorems.
In this paper we study the maximal position process of branching Brownian motion in random spatial environment. The random environment is given by a process $ξ= \left(ξ(x)\right)_{x\in\mathbb{R}}$ satisfying certain conditions. We show that the maximum position $M_t$ of particles alive at time $t$ satisfies a quenched strong law of large numbers and an annealed invariance principle.
We generalize the notion of the submartingale property and Doob's inequality. Furthermore, we show how the latter leads to new inequalities for several stochastic processes: certain time series, Levy processes, random walks, processes with independent increments, branching processes and continuous state branching processes, branching diffusions and superdiffusions, as well as some Markov processes, including geometric Brownian motion.
In this paper we present a Doob type maximal inequality for stochastic processes satisfying the conditional increment control condition. If we assume, in addition, that the margins of the process have uniform exponential tail decay, we prove that the supremum of the process decays exponentially in the same manner. Then we apply this result to the construction of the almost everywhere stochastic flow to stochastic differential equations with singular time dependent divergence-free drift.
Let $f$ be a martingale with values in a uniformly $p$-smooth Banach space and $w$ any positive weight. We show that $\mathbb{E} (f^* \cdot w) \lesssim \mathbb{E}(S_p f \cdot w^*)$, where $\cdot^*$ is the martingale maximal operator and $S_p$ is the $\ell^p$ sum of martingale increments.
An inequality for the $p$th power of the norm of a stochastic convolution integral in a Hilbert space is proved. The inequality is stronger than analogues inequalities in the Literature in the sense that it is pathwise and not in expectation. An application of this inequality is provided for the semilinear stochastic evolution equations with Lévy noise and monotone nonlinear drift. The existence and uniqueness of the mild solutions in $L^p$ for these equations is proved and a sufficient condition for exponential asymptotic stability of the solutions is derived.
As an alternative to the well-known methods of "chaining" and "bracketing" that have been developed in the study of random fields, a new method, which is based on a stochastic maximal inequality derived by using the Taylor expansion, is presented. The inequality dealing with finite-dimensional discrete-time martingales is pulled up to infinite-dimensional ones by using the monotone convergence arguments. The main results are some weak convergence theorems for sequences of separable random fields of discrete-time martingales under the uniform topology with the help also of entropy methods. As s…
We consider branching random walk in spatial random branching environment (BRWRE) in dimension one, as well as related differential equations: the Fisher-KPP equation with random branching and its linearized version, the parabolic Anderson model (PAM). When the random environment is bounded, we show that after recentering and scaling, the position of the maximal particle of the BRWRE, the front of the solution of the PAM, as well as the front of the solution of the randomized Fisher-KPP equation fulfill quenched invariance principles. In addition, we prove that at time t the distance between t…
As an alternative to the well-known methods of "chaining" and "bracketing" that have been developed in the study of random fields, a new method, which is based on a {\em stochastic maximal inequality} derived by using the formula for integration by parts and on a new concept named {\em strict countability}, is presented. The main results are some weakconvergence theorems for sequences of separable random fields of discrete-time martingales under the uniform topology with the help also of entropy methods. As special cases, some new results for i.i.d.\ random sequences, including a new Donsker t…
One way to interpret smoothness of a measure in infinite dimensions is quasi-invariance of the measure under a class of transformations. Usually such settings lack a reference measure such as the Lebesgue or Haar measure, and therefore we can not use smoothness of a density with respect to such a measure. We describe how a functional inequality can be used to prove quasi-invariance results in several settings. In particular, this gives a different proof of the classical Cameron-Martin (Girsanov) theorem for an abstract Wiener space. In addition, we revisit several more geometric examples, even…
In this note, we establish a novel maximal inequality of the 2D Young integral $\int_a^b\int_c^d FdG$ in terms of the $(p,q)$-bivariation norms of the section functions $x\mapsto F(x,y)$ and $y\mapsto F(x,y)$ where $G:[a,b]\times [c,d]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a controlled path satisfying finite $(p,q)$-variation conditions. The proof is reminiscent from the Young's original ideas \cite{young1} in defining two-parameter integrals in terms of $(p,q)$-finite bivariations. Our result complements the standard maximal inequality established by Towghi \cite{towghi1} in terms of joint variations. We…
We consider a diffusion process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a generator of the form $ L:=\frac 12 e^{V(x)}div(e^{-V(x)}\nabla ) $ where $V$ is measurable and periodic. We only assume that $e^V$ and $e^{-V}$ are locally integrable. We then show that, after proper rescaling, the law of the diffusion converges to a Brownian motion for Lebesgue almost all starting points. This pointwise invariance principle was previously known under uniform ellipticity conditions (when $V$ is bounded), and was recently proved under more restrictive $L^p$ conditions on $e^V$ and $e^{-V}$. Our approach uses Dirichlet fo…
A maximal inequality is an inequality which involves the (absolute) supremum $\sup_{s\leq t}|X_{s}|$ or the running maximum $\sup_{s\leq t}X_{s}$ of a stochastic process $(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$. We discuss maximal inequalities for several classes of stochastic processes with values in an Euclidean space: Martingales, Lévy processes, Lévy-type - including Feller processes, (compound) pseudo Poisson processes, stable-like processes and solutions to SDEs driven by a Lévy process -, strong Markov processes and Gaussian processes. Using the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequalities we als discuss some relation…
In this paper we generalize the Hájek-Rényi-Chow maximal inequality for submartingales to $L^p$ type Riesz spaces with conditional expectation operators. As applications we obtain a submartingale convergence theorem and a strong law of large numbers in Riesz spaces. Along the way we develop a Riesz space variant of the Clarkson's inequality for $1\le p\le 2$.
We present lower estimates for the best constant appearing in the weak $(1,1)$ maximal inequality in the space $(\R^n,\|\cdot\|_{\iy})$. We show that this constant grows to infinity faster than $(\log n)^{1-o(1)}$ when $n$ tends to infinity. To this end, we follow and simplify the approach used by J.M. Aldaz. The new part of the argument relies on Donsker's theorem identifying the Brownian bridge as the limit object describing the statistical distribution of the coordinates of a point randomly chosen in the unit cube $[0,1]^n$ ($n$ large).
The exponential inequality of the maximum partial sums is a key to establish the law of the iterated logarithm of negatively associated random variables. In the one-indexed random sequence case, such inequalities for negatively associated random variables are established by Shao (2000) by using his comparison theorem between negatively associated and independent random variables. In the multi-indexed random field case, the comparison theorem fails. The purpose of this paper is to establish the Kolmogorov exponential inequality as well a moment inequality of the maximum partial sums of a negati…
A tight upper bound is given on the distribution of the maximum of a supermartingale. Specifically, it is shown that if $Y$ is a semimartingale with initial value zero and quadratic variation process $[Y,Y]$ such that $Y + [Y,Y]$ is a supermartingale, then the probability the maximum of $Y$ is greater than or equal to a positive constant $a$ is less than or equal to $1/(1+a).$ The proof makes use of the semimartingale calculus and is inspired by dynamic programming.
In this paper, a fourth moment bound for partial sums of functional of strongly ergodic Markov chain is established. This type of inequality plays an important role in the study of empirical process invariance principle. This one is specially adapted to the technique of Dehling, Durieu and Volný (2008). The same moment bound can be proved for dynamical system whose transfer operator has some spectral properties. Examples of applications are given.
Let $(E, \| \cdot\|)$ be a Banach space such that, for some $q\geq 2$, the function $x\mapsto \|x\|^q$ is of $C^2$ class and its first and second Fréchet derivatives are bounded by some constant multiples of $(q-1)$-th power of the norm and $(q-2)$-th power of the norm and let $S$ be a $C_0$-semigroup of contraction type on $(E, \| \cdot\|)$. We consider the following stochastic convolution process \begin{align*} u(t)=\int_0^t\int_ZS(t-s)ξ(s,z)\,\tilde{N}(\mathrm{d} s,\mathrm{d} z), \;\;\; t\geq 0, \end{align*} where $\tilde{N}$ is a compensated Poisson random measure on a measurable space $(Z…
We provide variants and improvements of the Brascamp-Lieb variance inequality which take into account the invariance properties of the underlying measure. This is applied to spectral gap estimates for log-concave measures with many symmetries and to non-interacting conservative spin systems.

Let (e^{tA})_{t \geq 0} be a C_0-contraction semigroup on a 2-smooth Banach space E, let (W_t)_{t \geq 0} be a cylindrical Brownian motion in a Hilbert space H, and let (g_t)_{t \geq 0} be a progressively measurable process with values in the space γ(H,E) of all γ-radonifying operators from H to E. We prove that for all 0<p<\infty there exists a constant C, depending only on p and E, such that for all T \geq 0 we have \E \sup_{0\le t\le T} || \int_0^t e^{(t-s)A} g_s dW_s \ ||^p \leq C \mathbb{E} (\int_0^T || g_t ||_{γ(H,E)}^2 dt)^\frac{p}{2}. For p \geq 2 the proof is based on the observation …
In a filtered measure space, a characterization of weights for which the trace inequality of a positive operator holds is given by the use of discrete Wolff's potential. A refinement of the Carleson embedding theorem is also introduced. Sawyer type characterization of weights for which a two-weight norm inequality for a generalized Doob's maximal operator holds is established by an application of our Carleson embedding theorem. Moreover, Hytönen-Pérez type one-weight norm estimate for Doob's maximal operator is obtained by the use of our two-weight characterization.
We prove an elementary yet useful inequality bounding the maximal value of certain linear programs. This leads directly to a bound on the martingale difference for arbitrarily dependent random variables, providing a generalization of some recent concentration of measure results. The linear programming inequality may be of independent interest.
We study classical weighted $L^p\to L^q$ inequalities for the fractional maximal operators on $\R^d$, proved originally by Muckenhoupt and Wheeden in the 70's. We establish a slightly stronger version of this inequality with the use of a novel extension of Bellman function method. More precisely, the estimate is deduced from the existence of a certain special function which enjoys appropriate majorization and concavity. From this result and an explicit version of the ``$A_{p-\varepsilon}$ theorem," derived also with Bellman functions, we obtain the sharp inequality of Lacey, Moen, Pérez and To…
