As an alternative to the well-known methods of "chaining" and "bracketing" that have been developed in the study of random fields, a new method, which is based on a stochastic maximal inequality derived by using the Taylor expansion, is presented. The inequality dealing with finite-dimensional discrete-time martingales is pulled up to infinite-dimensional ones by using the monotone convergence arguments. The main results are some weak convergence theorems for sequences of separable random fields of discrete-time martingales under the uniform topology with the help also of entropy methods. As special cases, some new results for i.i.d. random sequences, including a new Donsker theorem and a moment bound for suprema of empirical processes indexed by classes of sets or functions, are obtained.
We give a representation of the fractional integral for symmetric Markovian semigroups as the projection of martingale transforms and prove the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev(HLS) inequality based on this representation. The proof rests on a new inequality for a fractional Littlewood-Paley $g$-function.
The paper considers the martingale theory in the $G$-framework. A form of Doob's optional sampling is established, which allows to prove the exact analogue of the classical maximal inequality. The obtained results are used to improve the existing $G$-martingale representation theorems.
We obtain a Bernstein type Gaussian concentration inequality for martingales. Our inequality improves the Azuma-Hoeffding inequality for moderate deviations $x$. Following the work of McDiarmid (1989), Talagrand (1996) and Boucheron, Lugosi and Massart (2000,2003), we show that our result can be applied to the concentration of random functions, Erdös-Rényi random graph, and maxima of empirical processes. Several interesting Gaussian concentration inequalities have been obtained.
Freedman's inequality is a martingale counterpart to Bernstein's inequality. This result shows that the large-deviation behavior of a martingale is controlled by the predictable quadratic variation and a uniform upper bound for the martingale difference sequence. Oliveira has recently established a natural extension of Freedman's inequality that provides tail bounds for the maximum singular value of a matrix-valued martingale. This note describes a different proof of the matrix Freedman inequality that depends on a deep theorem of Lieb from matrix analysis. This argument delivers sharp constan…
Let $f$ be a martingale with values in a uniformly $p$-smooth Banach space and $w$ any positive weight. We show that $\mathbb{E} (f^* \cdot w) \lesssim \mathbb{E}(S_p f \cdot w^*)$, where $\cdot^*$ is the martingale maximal operator and $S_p$ is the $\ell^p$ sum of martingale increments.
In this paper, we consider the measure determined by a fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. For such measure, we establish a martingale representation theorem and consequently obtain the Logarithmic-Sobolev inequality. To this end, we also present the integration by parts formula for such measure, which is obtained via its pull back formula and the Bismut method.
Multi-dimensional continuous local martingales, enhanced with their stochastic area process, give rise to geometric rough paths with a.s. finite homogenous p-variation, p>2. Here we go one step further and establish quantitative bounds of the p-variation norm in the form of a BDG inequality. Our proofs are based on old ideas by Lepingle. We also discuss geodesic and piecewise linear approximations.
We prove a new inequality controlling the large deviations of the empirical measure of a Markov chain. This inequality is based on the martingale used by Donsker and Varadhan and the minimax theorem. It holds for convex sets and it requires to take an infimum over the starting point. In the case of a compact space, this inequality is a partial improvement of the large deviations estimates of Donsker and Varadhan. In the case of a non compact space, we condition on the event that the process visits $n$ times a compact subset of the space and we still obtain a control on the exponential scale.
The purpose of this paper is to give a survey of a class of maximal inequalities for purely discontinuous martingales, as well as for stochastic integral and convolutions with respect to Poisson measures, in infinite dimensional spaces. Such maximal inequalities are important in the study of stochastic partial differential equations with noise of jump type.
For a Hilbert space valued martingale $(f_n)$ and an adapted sequence of positive random variables $(w_n)$, we show the weighted Davis type inequality \[ \mathbb{E} \Bigl( |f_0| w_0 + \frac{1}{4} \sum_{n=1}^{N} \frac{|df_n|^2}{f^*_n} w_n \Bigr) \leq \mathbb{E} ( f^*_N w^*_N). \] This inequality is sharp and implies several results about the martingale square function. We also obtain a variant of this inequality for martingales with values in uniformly convex Banach spaces.
The $L^p$ maximal inequalities for martingales are one of the classical results in the theory of stochastic processes. Here we establish the sharp moderate maximal inequalities for one-dimensional diffusion processes, which include the $L^p$ maximal inequalities as special cases. Moreover, we apply our theory to many specific examples, including the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process, Brownian motion with drift, reflected Brownian motion with drift, Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process, radial OU process, and Bessel process. The results are further applied to establish the moderate maximal inequalities for…
The Bernstein inequality is a tight upper bound on tail probabilities for independent random variables. Freedman extended the Bernstein inequality to martingales with differences bounded from above, and then Dzhaparidze and van Zanten generalized Freedman's result to non-bounded locally square integrable martingales. In this paper, we derive some Dzhaparidze-van Zanten type inequalities for self-normalized martingales with square integrable and non-square integrable differences.
For each 1 < p < infinity, there exists a positive constant c_p, depending only on p, such that the following holds. Let (d_k), (e_k) be real-valued martingale difference sequences. If for for all bounded nonnegative predictable sequences (s_k) and all positive integers k we have E[s_k vee |e_k|] le E[s_k vee |d_k|] then for all positive integers n we have || sum_{k=1}^n e_k ||_p le c_p || \sum_{k=1}^n d_k ||_p .
We prove maximal inequalities for $L_q$-valued martingales obtained by stochastic integration with respect to compensated random measures. A version of these estimates for integrals with respect to compensated Poisson random measures were first obtained by Dirksen (arXiv:1208:3885) using arguments based on inequalities for sums of independent Banach-space-valued random variables, geometric properties of Banach spaces, and decoupling inequalities. Our proofs are completely different and rely almost exclusively on classical stochastic analysis for real semimartingales.
It was shown by the authors that two one-dimensional probability measures in the convex order admit a martingale coupling with respect to which the integral of $\vert x-y\vert$ is smaller than twice their $\mathcal W_1$-distance (Wasserstein distance with index $1$). We showed that replacing $\vert x-y\vert$ and $\mathcal W_1$ respectively with $\vert x-y\vert^ρ$ and $\mathcal W_ρ^ρ$ does not lead to a finite multiplicative constant. We show here that a finite constant is recovered when replacing $\mathcal W_ρ^ρ$ with the product of $\mathcal W_ρ$ times the centred $ρ$-th moment of the second …
As an alternative to the well-known methods of "chaining" and "bracketing" that have been developed in the study of random fields, a new method, which is based on a {\em stochastic maximal inequality} derived by using the formula for integration by parts and on a new concept named {\em strict countability}, is presented. The main results are some weakconvergence theorems for sequences of separable random fields of discrete-time martingales under the uniform topology with the help also of entropy methods. As special cases, some new results for i.i.d.\ random sequences, including a new Donsker t…
We provide a variant of Azuma's concentration inequality for martingales, in which the standard boundedness requirement is replaced by the milder requirement of a subgaussian tail.
In this paper, the classical Dellacherie's theorem about stochastic process is extended to variable exponent Lebesgue spaces. As its applications, we obtain variable exponent analogues of several famous inequalities in classical martingale theory, including convexity lemma, Burkholder-Gundy-Davis' inequality and Chevalier's inequality. Moreover, we investigate some other equivalent relations between variable exponent martingale Hardy spaces.
Freedman's inequality is a supermartingale counterpart to Bennett's inequality. This result shows that the tail probabilities of a supermartingale is controlled by the quadratic characteristic and a uniform upper bound for the supermartingale difference sequence. Replacing the quadratic characteristic by $\textrm{H}_k^y:= \sum_{i=1}^k\left(\mathbf{E}(ξ_i^2 |\mathcal{F}_{i-1}) +ξ_i^2\textbf{1}_{\{|ξ_i|> y\}}\right),$ Dzhaparidze and van Zanten (\emph{Stochastic Process. Appl.}, 2001) have extended Freedman's inequality to martingales with unbounded differences. In this paper, we prove that $\te…
In this paper we study processes which are constructed by a convolution of a deterministic kernel with a martingale. A special emphasis is put on the case where the driving martingale is a centred Lévy process, which covers the popular class of fractional Lévy processes. As a main result we show that, under appropriate assumptions on the kernel and the martingale, the maximum process of the corresponding `convoluted martingale' is $p$-integrable and we derive maximal inequalities in terms of the kernel and of the moments of the driving martingale.
A proof of the continuous martingale convergence theorem is provided. It relies on a classical martingale inequality and the almost sure convergence of a uniformly bounded non-negative super-martingale, after a truncation argument.
We show existence and uniqueness of solutions of stochastic path-dependent differential equations driven by cadlag martingale noise under joint local monotonicity and coercivity assumptions on the coefficients with a bound in terms of the supremum norm. In this set-up, the usual proof using the ordinary Gronwall lemma together with the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequality seems impossible. In order to solve this problem, we prove a new and quite general stochastic Gronwall lemma for cadlag martingales using Lenglart's inequality.
We give a short summary of Varopoulos' generalised Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality for self-adjoint $C_{0}$ semigroups and give a new probabilistic representation of the classical fractional integral operators on $\R^n$ as projections of martingale transforms. Using this formula we derive a new proof of the classical Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality based on Burkholder-Gundy and Doob's inequalities for martingales.
The central limit theorem of martingales is the fundamental tool for studying the convergence of stochastic processes, especially stochastic integrals and differential equations. In this paper, general central limit theorems and functional central limit theorems are obtained for martingale like random variables under the sub-linear expectation. As applications, the Lindeberg central limit theorem and functional central limit theorem are obtained for independent but not necessarily identically distributed random variables, and a new proof of the Lévy characterization of a G-Brownian motion with…
We study a class of martingale inequalities involving the running maximum process. They are derived from pathwise inequalities introduced by Henry_Labordere et al. (2013) and provide an upper bound on the expectation of a function of the running maximum in terms of marginal distributions at n intermediate time points. The class of inequalities is rich and we show that in general no inequality is uniformly sharp - for any two inequalities we specify martingales such that one or the other inequality is sharper. We then use our inequalities to recover Doob's L^p inequalities. For p in (0,1] we ob…
For a continuous ${\cal L}_2$-bounded Martingale with no intervals of constancy, starting at $0$ and having final variance $σ^2$, the expected local time at $x \in \cal{R}$ is at most $\sqrt{σ^2+x^2}-|x|$. This sharp bound is attained by Standard Brownian Motion stopped at the first exit time from the interval $(x-\sqrt{σ^2+x^2},x+\sqrt{σ^2+x^2})$. Sharp bounds for the expected maximum, maximal absolute value, maximal diameter and maximal number of upcrossings of intervals, have been established by Dubins and Schwarz (1988), Dubins, Gilat and Meilijson (2009) and by the authors (2017).
We present novel martingale concentration inequalities for martingale differences with finite Orlicz-$ψ_α$ norms. Such martingale differences with weak exponential-type tails scatters in many statistical applications and can be heavier than sub-exponential distributions. In the case of one dimension, we prove in general that for a sequence of scalar-valued supermartingale difference, the tail bound depends solely on the sum of squared Orlicz-$ψ_α$ norms instead of the maximal Orlicz-$ψ_α$ norm, generalizing the results of Lesigne & Volný (2001) and Fan et al. (2012). In the multidimensional ca…
In this paper we consider the martingale Hardy spaces defined with the help of the mixed $L_{\pv}$-norm. Five mixed martingale Hardy spaces will be investigated: $H_{\pv}^{s}$, $H_{\pv}^S$, $H_{\pv}^M$, $\cP_{\pv}$ and $\cQ_{\pv}$. Several results are proved for these spaces, like atomic decompositions, Doob's inequality, boundedness, martingale inequalities and the generalization of the well-known Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequality.
We prove a stochastic Gronwall lemma of the following type: if $Z$ is an adapted nonnegative continuous process which satisfies a linear integral inequality with an added continuous local martingale $M$ and a process $H$ on the right hand side, then for any $p \in (0,1)$ the $p$-th moment of the supremum of $Z$ is bounded by a constant $κ_p$ (which does not depend on $M$) times the $p$-th moment of the supremum of $H$. Our main tool is a martingale inequality which is due to D. Burkholder. We provide an alternative simple proof of the martingale inequality which provides an explicit numerical …
Given a probability space $(Ω, \mathsf{A}, μ)$, let $\mathsf{A}_1, \mathsf{A}_2, ...$ be a filtration of $σ$-subalgebras of $\mathsf{A}$ and let $\mathsf{E}_1, \mathsf{E}_2, ...$ denote the corresponding family of conditional expectations. Given a martingale $f = (f_1, f_2, ...)$ adapted to this filtration and bounded in $L_p(Ω)$ for some $2 \le p < \infty$, Burkholder's inequality claims that $$\|f\|_{L_p(Ω)} \sim_{\mathrm{c}_p} \Big\| \Big(\sum_{k=1}^\infty \mathsf{E}_{k-1}(|df_k|^2) \Big)^{1/2} \Big\|_{L_{p}(Ω)} + \Big(\sum_{k=1}^\infty \|df_k\|_p^p \Big)^{1/p}.$$ Motivated by quantum proba…

In this paper, we study the connections between three concepts - the reverse Hölder inequality for matrix-valued martingales, the well-posedness of linear BSDEs with unbounded coefficients, and the well-posedness of quadratic BSDE systems. In particular, we show that a linear BSDE with bmo (bounded mean oscillation) coefficients is well-posed if and only if the stochastic exponential of a related matrix-valued martingale satisfies a reverse Hölder inequality. Furthermore, we give structural conditions under which these two equivalent conditions are satisfied. Finally, we apply our results on l…
We investigate the properties of a discrete-time martingale $\{X_m\}_{m\in \mathbb Z_{\geq 0}}$, where all differences between adjacent random variables are limited to be not more than a constant as a promise. In this situation, it is known that the Azuma-Hoeffding inequality holds, which gives an upper bound of a probability for exceptional events. The inequality gives a simple form of the upper bound, and it has been utilized for many investigations. However, the inequality is not tight. We give an explicit expression of a tight upper bound, and we show that it and the bound obtained from th…
Evaluation of the Bellman functions is a difficult task. The exact Bellman functions of the dyadic Carleson Embedding Theorem 1.1 and the dyadic maximal operators are obtained in [3] and [4]. Actually, the same Bellman functions also work for the tree-like structure. In this paper, we give a self-complete proof of the coincidence of the Bellman functions on the more general infinitely refining filtered probability space, see Definition 1.3. The proof depends on a remodeling of the Bellman function of the dyadic Carleson Embedding Theorem.
We study martingale inequalities from an analytic point of view and show that a general martingale inequality can be reduced to a pair of deterministic inequalities in a small number of variables. More precisely, the optimal bound in the martingale inequality is determined by a fixed point of a simple nonlinear operator involving a concave envelope. Our results yield an explanation for certain inequalities that arise in mathematical finance in the context of robust hedging.
We prove a deviation inequality for noncommutative martingales by extending Oliveira's argument for random matrices. By integration we obtain a Burkholder type inequality with satisfactory constant. Using continuous time, we establish noncommutative Poincaré type inequalities for "nice" semigroups with a positive curvature condition. These results allow us to prove a general deviation inequality and a noncommutative transportation inequality due to Bobkov and Götze in the commutative case. To demonstrate our setting is general enough, we give various examples, including certain group von Neuma…
The variation of a martingale $p_0^k=p_0,...,p_k$ of probabilities on a finite (or countable) set $X$ is denoted $V(p_0^k)$ and defined by $V(p_0^k)=E(\sum_{t=1}^k|p_t-p_{t-1}|_1)$. It is shown that $V(p_0^k)\leq \sqrt{2kH(p_0)}$, where $H(p)$ is the entropy function $H(p)=-\sum_xp(x)\log p(x)$ and $\log$ stands for the natural logarithm. Therefore, if $d$ is the number of elements of $X$, then $V(p_0^k)\leq \sqrt{2k\log d}$. It is shown that the order of magnitude of the bound $\sqrt{2k\log d}$ is tight for $d\leq 2^k$: there is $C>0$ such that for every $k$ and $d\leq 2^k$ there is a marting…
We generalize a famous tail Doob's inequality, relative two non-negative random variables, arising in the martingale theory, in two directions: on the more general source data and on the random variables belonging to the so-called Grand Lebesgue Spaces. We bring also several examples in each sections in order to show the exactness of our estimates.
In this paper, we study the John-Nirenberg inequality for BMO and the atomic decomposition for H1 of noncommutative martingales. We first establish a crude version of the column (resp. row) John-Nirenberg inequality for all 0 < p < \infty. By an extreme point property of Lp -space for 0 < p \leq 1, we then obtain a fine version of this in equality. The latter corresponds exactly to the classical John-Nirenberg inequality and enables us to obtain an exponential integrability inequality like in the classical case. These results extend and improve Junge and Musat's John-Nirenberg inequality. By d…
We prove existence of weak martingale solutions satisfying an almost sure version of the energy inequality and which constitute a (almost sure) Markov process.
It is shown that the ratio between the expected diameter of an L2-bounded martingale and the standard deviation of its last term cannot exceed sqrt(3). Moreover, a one-parameter family of stopping times on standard Brownian Motion is exhibited, for which the sqrt(3) upper bound is attained. These stopping times, one for each cost-rate c, are optimal when the payoff for stopping at time t is the diameter D(t) obtained up to time t minus the hitherto accumulated cost c t. A quantity related to diameter, maximal drawdown (or rise), is introduced and its expectation is shown to be bounded by sqrt(…
The motivation for this paper comes from the following question on comparison of norms of conformal martingales $X$, $Y$ in $\R^d$, $d\geq 2$. Suppose that $Y$ is differentially subordinate to $X$. For $0<p<\infty$, what is the optimal value of the constant $C_{p,d}$ in the inequality $$ Y_p\leq C_{p,d}X_p ?$$ We answer this question by considering a more general related problem for nonnegative submartingales. This enables us to study extension of the above inequality to the case when $d>1$ is not an integer, which has further interesting applications to stopped Bessel processes and to the beh…
We prove a martingale triangular array generalization of the Chow-Birnbaum-Marshall's inequality. The result is used to derive a strong law of large numbers for martingale triangular arrays whose rows are asymptotically stable in a certain sense. To illustrate, we derive a simple proof, based on martingale arguments, of the consistency of kernel regression with dependent data. Another application can be found in \cite{atchadeetfort08} where the new inequality is used to prove a strong law of large numbers for adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods.
An analogue of the Fourier transform will be introduced for all square integrable continuous martingale processes whose quadratic variation is deterministic. Using this transform we will formulate and prove a stochastic Heisenberg inequality.
In this paper, using martingale techniques, we prove a generalization of Doob's maximal identity in the setting of continuous nonnegative local submartingales $(X_{t})$ of the form: $X_{t}=N_{t}+A_{t}$, where the measure $(dA_{t})$ is carried by the set $\left\{t: X_{t}=0\right\}$. In particular, we give a multiplicative decomposition for the Azéma supermartingale associated with some last passage times related to such processes and we prove that these non-stopping times contain very useful information. As a consequence, we obtain the law of the maximum of a continuous nonnegative local martin…
We characterize the random times $ρ$ whose Azema supermartingales $Z^ρ$ take the form $Z^ρ=U/U^*$ for some non negative local martingales $U$ starting from 1 vanishing at infinity, where $U^*$ denotes the running maximum process of $U$.
For a sequence $\{X_{n}, \, n \geqslant 1 \}$ of random variables satisfying $\mathbb{E} \lvert X_{n} \rvert < \infty$ for all $n \geqslant 1$, a maximal inequality is established, and used to obtain strong law of large numbers for dependent random variables.
