It is shown that the ratio between the expected diameter of an L2-bounded martingale and the standard deviation of its last term cannot exceed sqrt(3). Moreover, a one-parameter family of stopping times on standard Brownian Motion is exhibited, for which the sqrt(3) upper bound is attained. These stopping times, one for each cost-rate c, are optimal when the payoff for stopping at time t is the diameter D(t) obtained up to time t minus the hitherto accumulated cost c t. A quantity related to diameter, maximal drawdown (or rise), is introduced and its expectation is shown to be bounded by sqrt(2) times the standard deviation of the last term of the martingale. These results complement the Dubins and Schwarz respective bounds 1 and sqrt(2) for the ratios between the expected maximum and maximal absolute value of the martingale and the standard deviation of its last term. Dynamic programming (gambling theory) methods are used for the proof of optimality.
This work is about the existence of martingale solutions and weak solutions for a stochastic nonlocal Burgers equation on bounded intervals. The existence of a martingale solution is shown by using a Galerkin approximation, Prokhorov's theorem and Skorokhod's embedding theorem. The same Galerkin approximation also leads to the existence of weak solution for the corresponding deterministic nonlocal Burgers equation on a bounded domain.
The Bernstein inequality is a tight upper bound on tail probabilities for independent random variables. Freedman extended the Bernstein inequality to martingales with differences bounded from above, and then Dzhaparidze and van Zanten generalized Freedman's result to non-bounded locally square integrable martingales. In this paper, we derive some Dzhaparidze-van Zanten type inequalities for self-normalized martingales with square integrable and non-square integrable differences.
For a continuous ${\cal L}_2$-bounded Martingale with no intervals of constancy, starting at $0$ and having final variance $σ^2$, the expected local time at $x \in \cal{R}$ is at most $\sqrt{σ^2+x^2}-|x|$. This sharp bound is attained by Standard Brownian Motion stopped at the first exit time from the interval $(x-\sqrt{σ^2+x^2},x+\sqrt{σ^2+x^2})$. Sharp bounds for the expected maximum, maximal absolute value, maximal diameter and maximal number of upcrossings of intervals, have been established by Dubins and Schwarz (1988), Dubins, Gilat and Meilijson (2009) and by the authors (2017).
Martingale-like sequences in vector lattice and Banach lattice frameworks are defined in the same way as martingales are defined in [Positivity 9 (2005), 437--456]. In these frameworks, a collection of bounded $X$-martingales is shown to be a Banach space under the supremum norm, and under some conditions it is also a Banach lattice with coordinate-wise order. Moreover, a necessary and sufficient condition is presented for the collection of $\mathcal{E}$-martingales to be a vector lattice with coordinate-wise order. It is also shown that the collection of bounded $\mathcal{E}$-martingales is a…
Let $X=(X_t)_{t\geq 0}$ be a one-dimensional Lévy process such that each $X_t$ has a $C^1_b$-density w.r.t. Lebesgue measure and certain polynomial or exponential moments. We characterize all polynomially bounded functions $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$, and exponentially bounded functions $g:\mathbb{R}\to (0,\infty)$, such that $f(X_t)-\mathbb{E} f(X_t)$, resp. $g(X_t)/\mathbb{E} g(X_t)$, are martingales.
We provide an analogue of Gundy's decomposition for L1-bounded non-commutative martingales. An important difference from the classical case is that for any L1-bounded non-commutative martingale, the decomposition consists of four martingales. This is strongly related with the row/column nature of non-commutative Hardy spaces of martingales. As applications, we obtain simpler proofs of the weak type (1,1) boundedness for non-commutative martingale transforms and the non-commutative analogue of Burkholder's weak type inequality for square functions. A sequence (x_n) in a normed space X is called…
This letter derives some new exponential bounds for discrete time, real valued, conditionally symmetric martingales with bounded jumps. The new bounds are extended to conditionally symmetric sub/ supermartingales, and they are compared to some existing bounds.
We provide sharp bounds for the exponential moments and $p$-moments, $1\leqslant p \leqslant 2$, of the terminate distribution of a martingale whose square function is uniformly bounded by one. We introduce a Bellman function for the corresponding extremal problem and reduce it to the already known Bellman function on $\mathrm{BMO}([0,1])$. In the case of tail estimates, a similar reduction does not work exactly, so we come up with a fine supersolution that leads to sharp tail estimates.
We show that the weak disorder phase for the directed polymer model in a bounded random environment is characterized by the integrability of the running supremum $\sup_{n\in \mathbb N}W_n^β$ of the associated martingale $(W_n^β)_{n\in \mathbb N}$. Using this characterization, we prove that $(W_n^β)_{n\in \mathbb N}$ is $L^p$-bounded in the whole weak disorder phase, for some $p>1$. The argument generalizes to non-negative martingales with a certain product structure.
In this paper, we derive the moderate deviation principle for stationary sequences of bounded random variables with values in a Hilbert space. The conditions obtained are expressed in terms of martingale-type conditions. The main tools are martingale approximations and a new Hoeffding inequality for non adpated sequences of Hilbert-valued random variables. Applications to Cramer-Von Mises statistics, functions of linear processes and stable Markov chains are given.
For a $d$-dimensional stochastic process $(S_n)_{n=0}^N$ we obtain criteria for the existence of an equivalent martingale measure, whose density $z$, up to a normalizing constant, is bounded from below by a given random variable $f$. We consider the case of one-period model (N=1) under the assumptions $S\in L^p$; $f,z\in L^q$, $1/p+1/q=1$, where $p\in [1,\infty]$, and the case of $N$-period model for $p=\infty$. The mentioned criteria are expressed in terms of the conditional distributions of the increments of $S$, as well as in terms of the boundedness from above of an utility function relate…
We investigate the properties of a discrete-time martingale $\{X_m\}_{m\in \mathbb Z_{\geq 0}}$, where all differences between adjacent random variables are limited to be not more than a constant as a promise. In this situation, it is known that the Azuma-Hoeffding inequality holds, which gives an upper bound of a probability for exceptional events. The inequality gives a simple form of the upper bound, and it has been utilized for many investigations. However, the inequality is not tight. We give an explicit expression of a tight upper bound, and we show that it and the bound obtained from th…
Let $(X_i, \mathcal{F}_i)_{i\geq1}$ be a martingale difference sequence in a smooth Banach space. Let $S_n=\sum_{i=1}^nX_i, n\geq 1,$ be the partial sums of $(X_i, \mathcal{F}_i)_{i\geq 1}$. We give upper bounds on the quantity $\mathbb{P}\left(\max_{1\leq k\leq n}\lVert S_k\rVert>nx\right)$ in terms of $ n\geq 1$ and $x>0$ in two different situations: when the martingale differences have uniformly bounded exponential moments and when the decay of the tail of the increments is polynomial.
Using the martingale approach we find sufficient conditions for exponential boundedness of first passage times over a level for ergodic first order autoregressive sequences (AR(1)). Further, we prove a martingale identity to be used in obtaining explicit bounds for the expectation of first passage times.
We consider a stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with multiplicative noise in an abstract framework that covers subcritical focusing and defocusing stochastic NLS in $H^1$ on compact manifolds and bounded domains. We construct a martingale solution using a modified Faedo-Galerkin-method based on the Littlewood-Paley-decomposition. For 2d manifolds with bounded geometry, we use Strichartz estimates to show pathwise uniqueness.
The existence and uniqueness in Sobolev spaces of solutions of the Cauchy problem to parabolic integro-differential equation of the order α\in(0,2) is investigated. The principal part of the operator has kernel m(t,x,y)/|y|^{d+α} with a bounded nondegenerate m, Hölder in x and measurable in y. The lower order part has bounded and measurable coefficients. The result is applied to prove the existence and uniqueness of the corresponding martingale problem.
We establish a local martingale $M$ associate with $f(X,Y)$ under some restrictions on $f$, where $Y$ is a process of bounded variation (on compact intervals) and either $X$ is a jump diffusion (a special case being a Lévy process) or $X$ is some general (cádlág metric space valued) Markov process. In the latter case $f$ is restricted to the form $f(x,y)=\sum_{k=1}^Kξ_k(x)η_k(y)$. This local martingale unifies both Dynkin's formula for Markov processes and the Lebesgue-Stieltjes integration (change of variable) formula for (right continuous) functions of bounded variation. For the jump diffusi…
We prove that, for locally bounded processes, absence of arbitrage opportunities of the first kind is equivalent to the existence of a dominating local martingale measure. This is related to and motivated by results from the theory of filtration enlargements.
In this note we connect the notion of solutions of a martingale problem to the notion of a strongly continuous and locally equi-continuous semigroup on the space of bounded continuous functions equipped with the strict topology. This extends the classical connection of semigroups to Markov processes that was used successfully in the context of compact spaces to the context of Polish spaces. In addition, we consider the context of locally compact spaces and show how the transition semigroup on the space of functions vanishing at infinity can be extended to the space of bounded continuous functi…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the maximum interpoint distance of random points in a $d$-dimensional set with a unique diameter and a smooth boundary at the poles. Instead of investigating only a fixed number of $n$ points as $n$ tends to infinity, we consider the much more general setting in which the random points are the supports of appropriately defined Poisson processes. The main result covers the case of uniformly distributed points within a $d$-dimensional ellipsoid with a unique major axis. Moreover, several generalizations of the main result are established, for example a limit l…
Lévy-type perpetuities being the a.s. limits of particular generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes are a natural continuous-time generalization of discrete-time perpetuities. These are random variables of the form $S:=\int_{[0,\infty)}e^{-X_{s-}}{\mathrm{d}}Z_s$, where $(X,Z)$ is a two-dimensional Lévy process, and $Z$ is a drift-free Lévy process of bounded variation. We prove an ultimate criterion for the finiteness of power moments of $S$. This result and the previously known assertion due to Erickson and Maller (2005) concerning the a.s. finiteness of $S$ are then used to derive ultimate …
We give a definitive treatment of duality for optimal consumption over the infinite horizon, in a semimartingale incomplete market satisfying no unbounded profit with bounded risk (NUPBR). Rather than base the dual domain on (local) martingale deflators, we use a class of supermartingale deflators such that deflated wealth plus cumulative deflated consumption is a supermartingale for all admissible consumption plans. This yields a strong duality, because the enlarged dual domain of processes dominated by deflators is naturally closed, without invoking its closure. In this way we automatically …
Consider a discrete-time martingale, and let $V^2$ be its normalized quadratic variation. As $V^2$ approaches 1, and provided that some Lindeberg condition is satisfied, the distribution of the rescaled martingale approaches the Gaussian distribution. For any $p\geq 1$, (Ann. Probab. 16 (1988) 275-299) gave a bound on the rate of convergence in this central limit theorem that is the sum of two terms, say $A_p+B_p$, where up to a constant, $A_p={\|V^2-1\|}_p^{p/(2p+1)}$. Here we discuss the optimality of this term, focusing on the restricted class of martingales with bounded increments. In this…
We study the empirical process indexed by F^2=\{f^2 : f \in F\}, where F is a class of mean-zero functions on a probability space. We present a sharp bound on the supremum of that process which depends on the ψ_1 diameter of the class F (rather than on the ψ_2 one) and on the complexity parameter γ_2(F,ψ_2). In addition, we present optimal bounds on the random diameters \sup_{f \in F} \max_{|I|=m} (\sum_{i \in I} f^2(X_i))^{1/2} using the same parameters. As applications, we extend several well known results in Asymptotic Geometric Analysis to any isotropic, log-concave ensemble on R^n.
We introduce a new class of estimators for the linear response of steady states of stochastic dynamics. We generalize the likelihood ratio approach and formulate the linear response as a product of two martingales, hence the name "martingale product estimators". We present a systematic derivation of the martingale product estimator, and show how to construct such estimator so its bias is consistent with the weak order of the numerical scheme that approximates the underlying stochastic differential equation. Motivated by the estimation of transport properties in molecular systems, we present a …
In this paper we derive the moderate deviation principle for stationary sequences of bounded random variables under martingale-type conditions. Applications to functions of $ϕ$-mixing sequences, contracting Markov chains, expanding maps of the interval, and symmetric random walks on the circle are given.
This paper focuses on martingale optimal transport problems when the martingales are assumed to have bounded quadratic variation. First, we give a result that characterizes the existence of a probability measure satisfying some convex transport constraints in addition to having given initial and terminal marginals. Several applications are provided: martingale measures with volatility uncertainty, optimal transport with capacity constraints, and Skorokhod embedding with bounded times. Next, we extend this result to multi-marginal constraints. Finally, we consider an optimal transport problem w…
In the complete graph on n vertices, when each edge has a weight which is an exponential random variable, Frieze proved that the minimum spanning tree has weight tending to zeta(3)=1/1^3+1/2^3+1/3^3+... as n goes to infinity. We consider spanning trees constrained to have depth bounded by k from a specified root. We prove that if k > log_2 log n+omega(1), where omega(1) is any function going to infinity with n, then the minimum bounded-depth spanning tree still has weight tending to zeta(3) as n -> infinity, and that if k < log_2 log n, then the weight is doubly-exponentially large in log_2 lo…
