For a continuous ${\cal L}_2$-bounded Martingale with no intervals of constancy, starting at $0$ and having final variance $σ^2$, the expected local time at $x \in \cal{R}$ is at most $\sqrt{σ^2+x^2}-|x|$. This sharp bound is attained by Standard Brownian Motion stopped at the first exit time from the interval $(x-\sqrt{σ^2+x^2},x+\sqrt{σ^2+x^2})$. Sharp bounds for the expected maximum, maximal absolute value, maximal diameter and maximal number of upcrossings of intervals, have been established by Dubins and Schwarz (1988), Dubins, Gilat and Meilijson (2009) and by the authors (2017).
In this paper non-asymptotic moment estimates are derived for tail of distribution for discrete time polynomial martingale by means of martingale differences as a rule in the terms of unconditional and unconditional relative moments and tails of distributions of summands. We show also the exactness of obtained estimations.
Using the argument of Geiss, Montgomery-Smith and Saksman \cite{GMSS}, and a new martingale inequality, the $L^p$--norms of certain Fourier multipliers in $\R^d$, $d\geq 2$, are identified. These include, among others, the second order Riesz transforms $R_j^2$, $j=1, 2,..., d$, and some of the Lévy multipliers studied in \cite{BBB}, \cite{BB}
For any two real-valued continuous-path martingales $X=\{X_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ and $Y=\{Y_t\}_{t\geq 0}$, with $X$ and $Y$ being orthogonal and $Y$ being differentially subordinate to $X$, we obtain sharp $L^p$ inequalities for martingales of the form $aX+bY$ with $a, b$ real numbers. The best $L^p$ constant is equal to the norm of the operator $aI+bH$ from $L^p$ to $L^p$, where $H$ is the Hilbert transform on the circle or real line. The values of these norms were found by Hollenbeck, Kalton and Verbitsky \cite{HKV}.
We prove new sharp $L^p$, logarithmic, and weak-type inequalities for martingales under the assumption of differentially subordination. The $L^p$ estimates are "Fyenman-Kac" type versions of Burkholder's celebrated martingale transform inequalities. From the martingale $L^p$ inequalities we obtain that Riesz transforms on manifolds of nonnegative Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature have exactly the same $L^p$ bounds as those known for Riesz transforms in the flat case of $\R^n$. From the martingale logarithmic and weak-type inequalities we obtain similar inequalities for Riesz transforms on compact Li…
We provide sharp bounds for the exponential moments and $p$-moments, $1\leqslant p \leqslant 2$, of the terminate distribution of a martingale whose square function is uniformly bounded by one. We introduce a Bellman function for the corresponding extremal problem and reduce it to the already known Bellman function on $\mathrm{BMO}([0,1])$. In the case of tail estimates, a similar reduction does not work exactly, so we come up with a fine supersolution that leads to sharp tail estimates.

We give concentration bounds for martingales that are uniform over finite times and extend classical Hoeffding and Bernstein inequalities. We also demonstrate our concentration bounds to be optimal with a matching anti-concentration inequality, proved using the same method. Together these constitute a finite-time version of the law of the iterated logarithm, and shed light on the relationship between it and the central limit theorem.
We prove sharp maximal inequalities for $L^q$-valued stochastic integrals with respect to any Hilbert space-valued local martingale. Our proof relies on new Burkholder-Rosenthal type inequalities for martingales taking values in an $L^q$-space.
We prove a martingale analog of van Schaftingen's theorem and give sharp estimates on the lower Hausdorff dimension of measures in martingale shift invariant spaces. We also provide martingale analogs of trace theorems for Sobolev functions.
The $L^p$ maximal inequalities for martingales are one of the classical results in the theory of stochastic processes. Here we establish the sharp moderate maximal inequalities for one-dimensional diffusion processes, which include the $L^p$ maximal inequalities as special cases. Moreover, we apply our theory to many specific examples, including the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) process, Brownian motion with drift, reflected Brownian motion with drift, Cox-Ingersoll-Ross process, radial OU process, and Bessel process. The results are further applied to establish the moderate maximal inequalities for…
We derive inequalities for time-discrete and time-continuous martingales that are similar to the well-known Burkholder inequalities. For the time-discrete case arbitrary martingales in $L^p(Ω)$ are treated, whereas in the time-continuous case martingales defined by Itô integrals w.r.t. a multi-dimensional Wiener process are considered. The estimates for the time-discrete martingales are related to the more general results by I. Pinelis (1994) and are proved to be sharp by a different and more elementary proof for this special setting. Further, for time-continuous martingales the presented ineq…
Freedman's inequality is a martingale counterpart to Bernstein's inequality. This result shows that the large-deviation behavior of a martingale is controlled by the predictable quadratic variation and a uniform upper bound for the martingale difference sequence. Oliveira has recently established a natural extension of Freedman's inequality that provides tail bounds for the maximum singular value of a matrix-valued martingale. This note describes a different proof of the matrix Freedman inequality that depends on a deep theorem of Lieb from matrix analysis. This argument delivers sharp constan…
Let $X$ be a supermartingale starting from $0$ which has only nonnegative jumps. For each $0<p<1$ we determine the best constants $c_p$, $C_p$ and $\mathfrak{c}_p$ such that $$ \,\,\,\,\sup_{t\geq 0}\left|\left|X_t\right|\right|_p\leq C_p\left|\left|-\inf_{t\geq 0}X_t\right|\right|_p,$$ $$ \,\,||\sup_{t\geq 0}X_t||_p\leq c_p\left|\left|-\inf_{t\geq 0}X_t\right|\right|_p$$ and $$ ||\sup_{t\geq 0}|X_t|\;||_p\leq \mathfrak{c}_p\left|\left|-\inf_{t\geq 0}X_t\right|\right|_p.$$ The estimates are shown to be sharp if $X$ is assumed to be a stopped one-dimensional Brownian motion. The inequalities ar…
We use the Bellman function method to give an elementary proof of a sharp weighted estimate for the Haar shifts, which is linear in the $A_2$ norm of the weight and in the complexity of the shift. Together with the representation of a general Calderón--Zygmund operator as a weighted average (over all dyadic lattices) of Haar shifts, (cf. arXiv:1010.0755v2[math.CA], arXiv:1007.4330v1[math.CA]) it gives a significantly simpler proof of the so-called the $A_2$ conjecture. The main estimate is a very general fact about concave functions, which can be very useful in other problems of martingale Har…
The constructive martingale representation theorem of functional Itô calculus is extended, from the space of square integrable martingales, to the space of local martingales. The setting is that of an augmented filtration generated by a Wiener process.
We give tight concentration bounds for mixtures of martingales that are simultaneously uniform over (a) mixture distributions, in a PAC-Bayes sense; and (b) all finite times. These bounds are proved in terms of the martingale variance, extending classical Bernstein inequalities, and sharpening and simplifying prior work.
Let $\{d_k\}_{k \geq 0}$ be a complex martingale difference in $L^p[0,1],$ where $1<p<\infty,$ and $\{\e_k\}_{k \geq 0}$ a sequence in $\{\pm 1\}.$ We obtain the following generalization of Burkholder's famous result. If $τ\in [-\frac 12, \frac 12]$ and $n \in \Z_+$ then $$|\sum_{k=0}^n{(\{c} \e_k τ) d_k}|_{L^p([0,1], \C^2)} \leq ((p^*-1)^2 + τ^2)^{\frac 12}|\sum_{k=0}^n{d_k}|_{L^p([0,1], \C)},$$ where $((p^*-1)^2 + τ^2)^{\frac 12}$ is sharp and $p^*-1 = \max\{p-1, \frac 1{p-1}\}.$ For $2\leq p<\infty$ the result is also true with sharp constant for $τ\in \R.$
In this paper we show sharp lower bounds for norms of even homogeneous Fourier multipliers in $\mathcal L(L^p(\mathbb R^d; X))$ for $1<p<\infty$ and for a UMD Banach space $X$ in terms of the range of the corresponding symbol. For example, if the range contains $a_1,\ldots,a_N \in \mathbb C$, then the norm of the multiplier exceeds $\|a_1R_1^2 + \cdots + a_NR_N^2\|_{\mathcal L(L^p(\mathbb R^N; X))}$, where $R_n$ is the corresponding Riesz transform. We also provide sharp upper bounds of norms of Bañuelos-Bogdan type multipliers in terms of the range of the functions involved. The main tools th…
Let $M,N$ be real-valued martingales such that $N$ is differentially subordinate to $M$. The paper contains the proofs of the following weak-type inequalities: (i) If $M\geq0$ and $0<p\leq1$, then \[\Vert N\Vert_{p,\infty}\leq2\Vert M\Vert_p\] and the constant is the best possible. (ii) If $M\geq0$ and $p\geq2$, then \[\Vert N\Vert_{p,\infty}\leq\frac{p}{2}(p-1)^{-1/p}\Vert M\Vert_p\] and the constant is the best possible. (iii) If $1\leq p\leq2$ and $M$ and $N$ are orthogonal, then \[\Vert N\Vert_{p,\infty}\leq K_p\Vert M\Vert_p,\] where \[K_p^p=\frac{1}{Γ(p+1)}\cdot\biggl(\fracπ{2}\biggr)^{p…
This paper gives new concentration inequalities for the spectral norm of a wide class of matrix martingales in continuous time. These results extend previously established Freedman and Bernstein inequalities for series of random matrices to the class of continuous time processes. Our analysis relies on a new supermartingale property of the trace exponential proved within the framework of stochastic calculus. We provide also several examples that illustrate the fact that our results allow us to recover easily several formerly obtained sharp bounds for discrete time matrix martingales.
Following the ideas of A. Lerner, F. Nazarov, S. Ombrosi from [12] we prove that there is a sequence of weights $w\in A^d_1$ such that $[w]^d_{A_1}\to \infty$, and martingale transforms $T$ such that with an absolute positive $c$ $\|T: L^1(w) \to L^{1, \infty}(w)\| \ge c [w]^d_{A_1}\log [w]^d_{A_1}$. We also show the existence of the sequence of weights (now in $A_2$) such that $[w]^d_{A_2}\to \infty$, and such that the following holds: $[w]_{A_2^d}\asymp \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}^2$; $\|S_{w}: L^{2} (w) \to L^2(w^{-1})\| \ge c\, \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}\sqrt{\log \|M^d\|_{w^{-1}}}$; $\|S_{w}: L^{2,1} (w) \to …
The $L^p$ maximal inequalities for martingales are one of the classical results in probability theory. Here we establish the sharp moderate maximal inequalities for upward skip-free Markov chains, which include the $L^p$ maximal inequalities as special cases. Furthermore, we apply our theory to two specific examples and obtain their moderate maximal inequalities: the first one is the M/M/1 queue and the second one is an upward skip-free Markov chain with large death jumps. These two examples have the same total birth and death rates. However, the former exhibits a phase transition phenomenon w…
In this paper, we aim at characterizing generalized functionals of discrete-time normal martingales. Let $M=(M_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ be a discrete-time normal martingale that has the chaotic representation property. We first construct testing and generalized functionals of $M$ with an appropriate orthonormal basis for $M$'s square integrable functionals. Then we introduce a transform, called the Fock transform, for these functionals and characterize them via the transform. Several characterization theorems are established. Finally we give some applications of these characterization theorems. O…
We develop the self similarity argument known as sparse domination in an abstract martingale setting, using a continuous time parameter. With this method, we prove a sharp weighted L^p estimate for the maximal operator Y^* of Y with respect to X. Here Y and X are uniformly integrable càdllàg Hilbert space valued martingales and Y differentially subordinate to X via the square bracket process. We also present a second, very simple proof of the special case Y=X. In this generality, notably including processes with jumps, the special case Y = X addresses a question raised in the late 70s by Bonam…
We show that, under certain smoothness conditions, a Brownian martingale at a fixed time can be represented as an exponential of its value at a later time. The time-dependent generator of this exponential operator is equal to one half times the Malliavin derivative. This result can also be seen as a generalization of the semi-group theory of parabolic partial differential equations to the parabolic path-dependent partial differential equations introduced by Dupire (2009) and Cont and Founié (2011). The exponential operator can be calculated explicitly in a series expansion, which resembles the…

For a real Borel measurable function b, which satisfies certain integrability conditions, it is possible to define a stochastic integral of the process b(Y) with respect to a Brownian motion W, where Y is a diffusion driven by W. It is well know that the stochastic exponential of this stochastic integral is a local martingale. In this paper we consider the case of an arbitrary Borel measurable function b where it may not be possible to define the stochastic integral of b(Y) directly. However the notion of the stochastic exponential can be generalized. We define a non-negative process Z, called…
This paper does not suppose a priori that the evolution of the price of a financial asset is a semimartingale. Since possible strategies of investors are self-financing, previous prices are forced to be finite quadratic variation processes. The non-arbitrage property is not excluded if the class ${\cal A}$ of admissible strategies is restricted. The classical notion of martingale is replaced with the notion of ${\cal A}$-martingale. A calculus related to ${\cal A}$-martingales with some examples is developed. Some applications to the maximization of the utility of an insider are expanded.
Let $\mathfrak{z}$ be a stochastic exponential, i.e., $\mathfrak{z}_t=1+\int_0^t\mathfrak{z}_{s-}dM_s$, of a local martingale $M$ with jumps $\triangle M_t>-1$. Then $\mathfrak{z}$ is a nonnegative local martingale with $\E\mathfrak{z}_t\le 1$. If $\E\mathfrak{z}_T= 1$, then $\mathfrak{z}$ is a martingale on the time interval $[0,T]$. Martingale property plays an important role in many applications. It is therefore of interest to give natural and easy verifiable conditions for the martingale property. In this paper, the property $\E\mathfrak{z}_{_T}=1$ is verified with the so-called linear gro…
We obtain bounds on the distribution of the maximum of a martingale with fixed marginals at finitely many intermediate times. The bounds are sharp and attained by a solution to $n$-marginal Skorokhod embedding problem in Obłój and Spoida [An iterated Azéma-Yor type embedding for finitely many marginals (2013) Preprint]. It follows that their embedding maximizes the maximum among all other embeddings. Our motivating problem is superhedging lookback options under volatility uncertainty for an investor allowed to dynamically trade the underlying asset and statically trade European call options fo…
Let $\mathcal{H}^{\mathbb{T}}$ denote the Hilbert transform on the circle. The paper contains the proofs of the sharp estimates \begin{equation*} \frac{1}{2π}|\{ ξ\in\mathbb{T} : \mathcal{H}^{\mathbb{T}}f(ξ) \geq 1 \}| \leq \frac{4}π\arctan\left(\exp\left(\fracπ{2}\|f\|_1\right)\right) -1, \quad f\in L^{1}(\mathbb{T}), \end{equation*} and \begin{equation*} \frac{1}{2π}|\{ ξ\in\mathbb{T} : \mathcal{H}^{\mathbb{T}}f(ξ) \geq 1 \}| \leq \frac{\|f\|_2^2}{1+\|f\|_2^2},\quad f\in L^{2}(\mathbb{T}). \end{equation*} Related estimates for orthogonal martingales satisfying a subordination condition are a…
We develop a nonanticipative calculus for functionals of a continuous semimartingale, using an extension of the Ito formula to path-dependent functionals which possess certain directional derivatives. The construction is based on a pathwise derivative, introduced by Dupire, for functionals on the space of right-continuous functions with left limits. We show that this functional derivative admits a suitable extension to the space of square-integrable martingales. This extension defines a weak derivative which is shown to be the inverse of the Ito integral and which may be viewed as a nonanticip…
In this paper we prove exponential inequalities (also called Bernstein's inequality) for fractional martingales. As an immediate corollary, we will discuss weak law of large numbers for fractional martingales under divergence assumption on the $β-$variation of the fractional martingale. A non trivial example of application of this convergence result is proposed.
We prove that for a so-called sticky process $S$ there exists an equivalent probability $Q$ and a $Q$-martingale $\tilde{S}$ that is arbitrarily close to $S$ in $L^p(Q)$ norm. For continuous $S$, $\tilde{S}$ can be chosen arbitrarily close to $S$ in supremum norm. In the case where $S$ is a local martingale we may choose $Q$ arbitrarily close to the original probability in the total variation norm. We provide examples to illustrate the power of our results and present applications in mathematical finance.
This papers addresses the stock option pricing problem in a continuous time market model where there are two stochastic tradable assets, and one of them is selected as a numéraire. It is shown that the presence of arbitrarily small stochastic deviations in the evolution of the numéraire process causes significant changes in the market properties. In particular, an equivalent martingale measure is not unique for this market, and there are non-replicable claims. The martingale prices and the hedging error can vary significantly and take extreme values, for some extreme choices of the equivalent …
We provide an analogue of Gundy's decomposition for L1-bounded non-commutative martingales. An important difference from the classical case is that for any L1-bounded non-commutative martingale, the decomposition consists of four martingales. This is strongly related with the row/column nature of non-commutative Hardy spaces of martingales. As applications, we obtain simpler proofs of the weak type (1,1) boundedness for non-commutative martingale transforms and the non-commutative analogue of Burkholder's weak type inequality for square functions. A sequence (x_n) in a normed space X is called…
We introduce a new class of processes for the evaluation of multivariate equity derivatives. The proposed setting is well suited for the application of the standard copula function theory to processes, rather than variables, and easily enables to enforce the martingale pricing requirement. The martingale condition is imposed in a general multidimensional Markov setting to which we only add the restriction of no-Granger-causality of the increments (Granger-independent increments). We call this class of processes GIMP (Granger Independent Martingale Processes). The approach can also be extended …
We extend some sharp inequalities for martingale-differences to general multiplicative systems of random variables. The key ingredient in the proofs is a technique reducing the general case to the case of Rademacher random variables without change of the constants in inequalities.
Hamza-Klebaner posed the problem of constructing martingales with Brownian marginals that differ from Brownian motion, so called fake Brownian motions. Besides its theoretical appeal, the problem represents the quintessential version of the ubiquitous fitting problem in mathematical finance where the task is to construct martingales that satisfy marginal constraints imposed by market data. Non-continuous solutions to this challenge were given by Madan-Yor, Hamza-Klebaner, Hobson, and Fan-Hamza-Klebaner whereas continuous (but non-Markovian) fake Brownian motions were constructed by Oleszkiewic…
We study the influence of additional intermediate marginal distributions on the value of the martingale optimal transport problem. From a financial point of view, this corresponds to taking into account call option prices not only, as usual, for those call options where the respective future maturities coincide with the maturities of some exotic derivative but also additional maturities and then to study the effect on model-independent price bounds for the exotic derivative. We characterize market settings, i.e., combinations of the payoff of exotic derivatives, call option prices and marginal…
We study a variant of the martingale optimal transport problem in a multi-period setting to derive robust price bounds of a financial derivative. On top of marginal and martingale constraints, we introduce a time-homogeneity assumption, which restricts the variability of the forward-looking transitions of the martingale across time. We provide a dual formulation in terms of superhedging and discuss relaxations of the time-homogeneity assumption by adding market frictions. In financial terms, the introduced time-homogeneity corresponds to a time-consistency condition for call prices, given the …
