In this paper, a fourth moment bound for partial sums of functional of strongly ergodic Markov chain is established. This type of inequality plays an important role in the study of empirical process invariance principle. This one is specially adapted to the technique of Dehling, Durieu and Volný (2008). The same moment bound can be proved for dynamical system whose transfer operator has some spectral properties. Examples of applications are given.
We derive a new maximal inequality for stationary sequences under a martingale-type condition introduced by Maxwell and Woodroofe [Ann. Probab. 28 (2000) 713-724]. Then, we apply it to establish the Donsker invariance principle for this class of stationary sequences. A Markov chain example is given in order to show the optimality of the conditions imposed.
Many statistical applications require establishing central limit theorems for sums, integrals, or for quadratic forms of functions of a stationary process. A particularly important case is that of Appell polynomials, since the Appell expansion rank" determines typically the type of central limit theorem satisfied by these functionals. We review and extend here to multidimensional indices a functional analysis approach to this problem proposed by Avram and Brown (1989), based on the method of cumulants and on integrability assumptions in the spectral domain; several applications are presented a…
A quantitative "fourth moment theorem" is provided for any self-adjoint element in a homogeneous Wigner chaos: the Wasserstein distance is controlled by the distance from the fourth moment to two. The proof uses the free counterpart of the Stein discrepancy. On the way, the free analogue of the WSH inequality is established.
In two new papers (Bierme et al., 2013) and (Nourdin and Peccati, 2015), sharp general quantitative bounds \ are given to complement the well-known fourth moment theorem of Nualart and Peccati, by which a sequence in a fixed Wiener chaos converges to a normal law if and only if its fourth cumulant converges to $0$. The bounds show that the speed of convergence is precisely of order the maximum of the fourth cumulant and the absolute value of the third moment (cumulant). Specializing to the case of normalized centered quadratic variations for stationary Gaussian sequences, we show that a third …
We study properties of stationary determinantal point processes $\X$ on $\Z$ from different points of views. It is proved that $\X\cap \N$ is almost surely Bohr-dense and good universal for almost everywhere convergence in $L^1$, and that $\X$ is not syndetic but $\X +\X = \mathbb{Z}$. For the associated centered random field, we obtain a sub-Gaussian property, a Salem-Littlewood inequality and a Khintchine-Kahane inequality. Results can be generalized to $\Z^d$.
We prove central limit theorems for additive functionals of stationary fields under integrability conditions on the higher-order spectral densities, which are derived using the Holder-Young-Brascamp-Lieb inequality.
The concentration inequality approach for normal approximation by Stein's method is generalized to the multivariate setting. We use this approach to prove a non-smooth function distance for multivariate normal approximation for standardized sums of $k$-dimensional independent random vectors $W=\sum_{i=1}^n X_i$ with an error bound of order $k^{1/2}γ$ where $γ=\sum_{i=1}^n E|X_i|^3$. For sums of locally dependent (unbounded) random vectors, we obtain a fourth moment bound which is typically of order $O_k(1/\sqrt{n})$, as well as a third moment bound which is typically of order $O_k(\log n/\sqrt…
Let $S$ be a countable set provided with a partial order and a minimal element. Consider a Markov chain on $S\cup\{0\}$ absorbed at $0$ with a quasi-stationary distribution. We use Holley inequality to obtain sufficient conditions under which the following hold. The trajectory of the chain starting from the minimal state is stochastically dominated by the trajectory of the chain starting from any probability on $S$, when both are conditioned to nonabsorption until a certain time. Moreover, the Yaglom limit corresponding to this deterministic initial condition is the unique minimal quasi-statio…
For a multivariate stationary process, we develop explicit representations for the finite predictor coefficient matrices, the finite prediction error covariance matrices and the partial autocorrelation function (PACF) in terms of the Fourier coefficients of its phase function in the spectral domain. The derivation is based on a novel alternating projection technique and the use of the forward and backward innovations corresponding to the predictions based on the infinite past and future, respectively. We show that such representations are ideal for studying the rates of convergence of the fini…
The aim of this paper is to propose new Rosenthal-type inequalities for moments of order higher than 2 of the maximum of partial sums of stationary sequences including martingales and their generalizations. As in the recent results by Peligrad et al. [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 135 (2007) 541-550] and Rio [J. Theoret. Probab. 22 (2009) 146-163], the estimates of the moments are expressed in terms of the norms of projections of partial sums. The proofs of the results are essentially based on a new maximal inequality generalizing the Doob maximal inequality for martingales and dyadic induction. Vari…
Explicit sufficient conditions on the hypercontractivity are presented for two classes of functional stochastic partial differential equations driven by, respectively, non-degenerate and degenerate Gaussian noises. Consequently, these conditions imply that the associated Markov semigroup is $L^2$-compact and exponentially convergent to the stationary distribution in entropy, variance and total variational norm. As the log-Sobolev inequality is invalid under the framework, we apply a criterion presented in the recent paper \cite{Wang14} using Harnack inequality, coupling property and Gaussian c…
We present an improved version of the second order Gaussian Poincaré inequality, firstly introduced in Chatterjee (2009) and Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert (2009). These novel estimates are used in order to bound distributional distances between functionals of Gaussian fields and normal random variables. Several applications are developed, including quantitative CLTs for non-linear functionals of stationary Gaussian fields related to the Breuer-Major theorem, improving previous findings in the literature and obtaining presumably optimal rates of convergence.
We consider a class of self-similar, continuous Gaussian processes that do not necessarily have stationary increments. We prove a version of the Breuer-Major theorem for this class, that is, subject to conditions on the covariance function, a generic functional of the process increments converges in law to a Gaussian random variable. The proof is based on the Fourth Moment Theorem. We give examples of five non-stationary processes that satisfy these conditions.
We prove that for symmetric Markov processes of diffusion type admitting a "carré du champ", the Poincaré inequality is equivalent to the exponential convergence of the associated semi-group in one (resp. all) $Ł^p(μ)$ spaces for $p\in (1,+\infty)$. Part of this result extends to the stationary non necessarily symmetric situation.
An irreducible stochastic matrix with rational entries has a stationary distribution given by a vector of rational numbers. We give an upper bound on the lowest common denominator of the entries of this vector. Bounds of this kind are used to study the complexity of algorithms for solving stochastic mean payoff games. They are usually derived using the Hadamard inequality, but this leads to suboptimal results. We replace the Hadamard inequality with the Markov chain tree formula in order to obtain optimal bounds. We also adapt our approach to obtain bounds on the absorption probabilities of fi…
We develop a new method for bounding the relative entropy of a random vector in terms of its Stein factors. Our approach is based on a novel representation for the score function of smoothly perturbed random variables, as well as on the de Bruijn's identity of information theory. When applied to sequences of functionals of a general Gaussian field, our results can be combined with the Carbery-Wright inequality in order to yield multidimensional entropic rates of convergence that coincide, up to a logarithmic factor, with those achievable in smooth distances (such as the 1-Wasserstein distance)…
We obtain strong consistency and asymptotic normality of a least squares estimator of the drift coefficient for complex-valued Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes disturbed by fractional noise, extending the result of Y. Hu and D. Nualart, [Statist. Probab. Lett., 80 (2010), 1030-1038] to a special 2-dimensions. The strategy is to exploit the Garsia-Rodemich-Rumsey inequality and complex fourth moment theorems. The main ingredients of this paper are the sample path regularity of a multiple Wiener-Ito integral and two equivalent conditions of complex fourth moment theorems in terms of the contractions…
