Let $\Om$ be a Borel subset of $S^\Bbb N$ where $S$ is countable. A measure is called exchangeable on $\Om$, if it is supported on $\Om$ and is invariant under every Borel automorphism of $\Om$ which permutes at most finitely many coordinates. De-Finetti's theorem characterizes these measures when $\Om=S^\Bbb N$. We apply the ergodic theory of equivalence relations to study the case $\Om\neq S^\Bbb N$, and obtain versions of this theorem when $\Om$ is a countable state Markov shift, and when $\Om$ is the collection of beta expansions of real numbers in $[0,1]$ (a non-Markovian constraint).
We study a class of strongly irreducible, multidimensional, topological Markov shifts, comparing two notions of "symmetric measure": exchangeability and the Gibbs (or conformal) property. We show that equilibrium measures for such shifts (unique and weak Bernoulli in the one dimensional case) exhibit a variety of spectral properties.
In this paper, we consider which kind of invariant measure on hereditary subshifts is not Gibbs measure. For the hereditary closure of a subshift $(X,S)$, we prove that in some situation, the invariant measure $ν*B_{p,1-p}$ can not be a Gibbs measure where $ν$ is an invariant measure on $(X,S)$. As an application, we show that for some $\B$-free subshifts, the unique equilibrium state $ν_η*B_{p,1-p}$ is not Gibbs measure.
Explicit formulas for complexity and unique invariant measure of the period-doubling subshift can be derived from those for the Thue-Morse subshift, obtained by Brlek, De Luca and Varricchio, and Dekking. In this note we give direct proofs based on combinatorial properties of the period-doubling sequence. We also derive explicit formulas for correlation integral and other recurrence characteristics of the period-doubling subshift. As a corollary we obtain that the determinism of this subshift converges to 1 as the distance threshold approaches 0.
We consider the problem of when a symbolic dynamical system supports a Borel probability measure that is invariant under every element of its automorphism group. It follows readily from a classical result of Parry that the full shift on finitely many symbols, and more generally any mixing subshift of finite type, supports such a measure. Frisch and Tamuz recently dubbed such measures characteristic, and further showed that every zero entropy subshift has a characteristic measure. While it remains open if every subshift over a finite alphabet has a characteristic measure, we define a new class …
In this note we show that for any subshift $X$ of finite $S$-rank every invariant measure $μ$ is determined by its values on finitely many cylinders. Under mild conditions these cylinders are given by the letters of the alphabet in question.
We prove that a shift ergodic measure on a topologically mixing sub-shift is isomorphic to a Bernoulli shift whenever it is quasi invariant under permutations of finite number of coordinates. We prove also that Gibbs measures on topologically mixing subshift of finite type are quasi invariant.
The class of substitutions of some primitive components is introduced. A bilateral subshift arising from a substitution of some primitive components is decomposed into pairwise disjoint, locally compact, shift-invariant sets, on each of which an invariant Radon measure is unique up to scaling. It is completely characterized in terms of eigenvalues of an incidence matrix when the unique invariant measure is finite.
We show that for every metrizable Choquet simplex $K$ and for every group $G$, which is infinite, countable, amenable and residually finite, there exists a Toeplitz $G$-subshift whose set of shift-invariant probability measures is affine homeomorphic to $K$. Furthermore, we get that for every integer $d\geq 1$ and every Toeplitz flow $(X,T)$, there exists a Toeplitz ${\mathbb Z}^d$-subshift which is topologically orbit equivalent to $(X,T)$.
A subshift with linear block complexity has at most countably many ergodic measures, and we continue of the study of the relation between such complexity and the invariant measures. By constructing minimal subshifts whose block complexity is arbitrarily close to linear but has uncountably many ergodic measures, we show that this behavior fails as soon as the block complexity is superlinear. With a different construction, we show that there exists a minimal subshift with an ergodic measure whose slow entropy grows slower than any given rate tending to infinitely but faster than any other rate m…
It is shown that for a non-singular conservative shift on a topologically mixing Markov subshift with Doeblin Condition the only possible absolutely continuous shift-invariant measure is a Markov measure. Moreover, if it is not equivalent to a homogeneous Markov measure then the shift is of Krieger-type $\mathrm{III}_1$. A criterion for equivalence of Markov measures is included.
We introduce a class of rank-one transformations, which we call extremely elevated staircase transformations. We prove that they are measure-theoretically mixing and, for any $f : \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ with $f(n)/n$ increasing and $\sum 1/f(n) < \infty$, that there exists an extremely elevated staircase with word complexity $p(n) = o(f(n))$. This improves the previously lowest known complexity for mixing subshifts, resolving a conjecture of Ferenczi.
We bound the number of distinct minimal subsystems of a given transitive subshift of linear complexity, continuing work of Ormes and Pavlov [7]. We also bound the number of generic measures such a subshift can support based on its complexity function. Our measure-theoretic bounds generalize those of Boshernitzan [1] and are closely related to those of Cyr and Kra [2].
Consider a Hölder continuous potential $ϕ$ defined on the full shift $A^\nn$, where $A$ is a finite alphabet. Let $X\subset A^\nn$ be a specified sofic subshift. It is well-known that there is a unique Gibbs measure $μ_ϕ$ on $X$ associated to $ϕ$. Besides, there is a natural nested sequence of subshifts of finite type $(X_m)$ converging to the sofic subshift $X$. To this sequence we can associate a sequence of Gibbs measures $(μ_ϕ^m)$. In this paper, we prove that these measures weakly converge at exponential speed to $μ_ϕ$ (in the classical distance metrizing weak topology). We also establish…
We give a sufficient condition for the simplex of invariant measures for a hereditary system to be Poulsen. In particular, we show that this simplex is Poulsen in case of positive entropy $\mathscr{B}$-free systems. We also give an example of a positive entropy hereditary system whose simplex of invariant measures is not Poulsen.
Given an irreducible subshift of finite type X, a subshift Y, a factor map π: X \to Y, and an ergodic invariant measure νon Y, there can exist more than one ergodic measure on X which projects to νand has maximal entropy among all measures in the fiber, but there is an explicit bound on the number of such maximal entropy preimages.
In this note we give simple examples of a one-dimensional mixing subshift with positive topological entropy which have two distinct measures of maximal entropy. We also give examples of subshifts which have two mutually singular equilibrium states for Hölder continuous functions. We also indicate how the construction can be extended to yield examples with any number of measures of maximal entropy of equilibrium states.
If $\mathcal{A}$ is a finite set (alphabet), the shift dynamical system consists of the space $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{N}}$ of sequences with entries in $\mathcal{A}$, along with the left shift operator $S$. Closed $S$-invariant subsets are called subshifts and arise naturally as encodings of other systems. In this paper, we study the number of ergodic measures for transitive subshifts under a condition ("regular bispecial condition") on the possible extensions of words in the associated language. Our main result shows that under this condition, the subshift can support at most $\frac{K+1}{2}$ er…
In 1984 Boshernitzan proved an upper bound on the number of ergodic measures for a minimal subshift of linear block growth and asked if it could be lowered without further assumptions on the shift. We answer this question, showing that Boshernitzan's bound is sharp. We further prove that the same bound holds for the, a priori, larger set of nonatomic generic measures, and that this bound remains valid even if one drops the assumption of minimality. Applying these results to interval exchange transformations, we give an upper bound on the number of nonatomic generic measures of a minimal IET, a…
In this paper we study the quenched distributions of hitting times for a class of random dynamical systems. We prove that hitting times to dynamically defined cylinders converge to a Poisson point process under the law of random equivariant measures with super-polynomial decay of correlations. In particular, we apply our results to uniformly aperiodic random subshifts of finite type equipped with random invariant Gibbs measures. We emphasize that we make no assumptions about the mixing property of the marginal measure.
We prove inequalities relating the measures of maximal entropy of two patterns u,v where the extender set of u is contained in the extender set of v. Our main results are two generalizations of a Theorem of Meyerovitch; the first applies to all such v,w when G=Z, and the second to v,w with the same shape and any countable amenable finitely generated torsion-free G. As a consequence of our results we give new and simpler proofs of several facts about synchronizing subshifts and we answer a question of Climenhaga.
We study the thermodynamic formalism for particular types of sub-additive sequences on a class of subshifts over countable alphabets. The subshifts we consider include factors of irreducible countable Markov shifts under certain conditions. We show the variational principle for topological pressure. We also study conditions for the existence and uniqueness of invariant ergodic Gibbs measures and the uniqueness of equilibrium states. As an application, we extend the theory of factors of (generalized) Gibbs measures on subshifts on finite alphabets to that on certain subshifts over countable alp…
For SFTs, any equilibrium measure is Gibbs, as long a $f$ has $d$-summable variation. This is a theorem of Lanford and Ruelle. Conversely, a theorem of Dobru{š}in states that for strongly-irreducible subshifts, shift-invariant Gibbs-measures are equilibrium measures. Here we prove a generalization of the Lanford-Ruelle theorem: for all subshifts, any equilibrium measure for a function with $d$-summable variation is "topologically Gibbs". This is a relaxed notion which coincides with the usual notion of a Gibbs measure for SFTs. In the second part of the paper, we study Gibbs and equilibrium me…
We construct a family of ergodic measures on random substitution subshifts (RS-subshifts) associated to a primitive random substitution. In particular, the word frequencies of every finite legal word exist for almost every element of the random substitution subshift with respect to these measures. As an application, we show that for a certain class of random substitutions the measures of maximal entropy are frequency measures.
The notion of Gibbs Measure is used by many researchers of the communities of Mathematical Physics, Probability, Thermodynamic Formalism, Symbolic Dynamics, and others. A natural question is when these several different notions of Gibbs measure coincide. We study the properties of Gibbs measures for functions with $d-$summable variation defined on a subshift $X$. Based on Meyerovitch's work, we prove that if $X$ is a subshift of finite type (SFT), then any equilibrium measure is also a Gibbs measure. Although the definition provided by Meyerovitch does not make any mention to conditional expec…
Simon's subshift conjecture states that for every aperiodic minimal subshift of Verblunsky coefficients, the common essential support of the associated measures has zero Lebesgue measure. We disprove this conjecture in this paper, both in the form stated and in the analogous formulation of it for discrete Schrödinger operators. In addition we prove a weak version of the conjecture in the Schrödinger setting. Namely, under some additional assumptions on the subshift, we show that the density of states measure, a natural measure associated with the operator family and whose topological support i…
In this work we analyze the concept of swap-invariance, which is a weaker variant of exchangeability. A random vector $ξ$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is called swap-invariant if $\,{\mathbf E}\,\big| \!\sum_j u_j ξ_j \big|\,$ is invariant under all permutations of $(ξ_1, \ldots, ξ_n)$ for each $u \in \mathbb{R}^n$. We extend this notion to random measures. For a swap-invariant random measure $ξ$ on a measure space $(S,\mathcal{S},μ)$ the vector $(ξ(A_1), \ldots, ξ(A_n))$ is swap-invariant for all disjoint $A_j \in \mathcal{S}$ with equal $μ$-measure. Various characterizations of swap-invariant random me…
The notion of entropy dimension has been introduced to measure the subexponential complexity of zero entropy systems. In this work we present a general construction of a strictly ergodic subshift of topological entropy dimension $α$ for each $α\in (0,1)$. It is shown that the system satisfies some sort of regularity in the size of atoms and the first return time. Moreover, we modify the construction to obtain a variant system that is weakly mixing.
We show the existence of a bounded Borel measurable saturated compensation function for a factor map between subshifts. As an application, we find the Hausdorff dimension and measures of full Hausdorff dimension for a compact invariant set of an expanding nonconformal map on the torus given by an integer-valued diagonal matrix. These problems were studied in [19] for a compact invariant set whose symbolic representation is a shift of finite type under the condition of the existence of a saturated compensation function. We extend the results by presenting a formula for the Hausdorff dimension f…
Gao, Jackson, and Seward (see arXiv:1201.0513) proved that every countably infinite group $Γ$ admits a nonempty free subshift $X \subseteq \{0,1\}^Γ$. Furthermore, a theorem of Seward and Tucker-Drob (see arXiv:1402.4184) implies that every countably infinite group $Γ$ admits a free subshift $X \subseteq \{0,1\}^Γ$ that supports an invariant probability measure. Aubrun, Barbieri, and Thomassé (see arXiv:1507.03369) used the Lovász Local Lemma to give a short alternative proof of the Gao--Jackson--Seward theorem. Recently, Elek (see arXiv:1702.01631) followed another approach involving the Lová…
We show that linear complexity is the threshold for the emergence of Kakutani inequivalence for measurable systems supported on a minimal subshift. In particular, we show that there are minimal subshifts of arbitrarily low super-linear complexity that admit both loosely Bernoulli and non-loosely Bernoulli ergodic measures and that no minimal subshift with linear complexity can admit inequivalent measures.
Any coded subshift X defined by a set C of code words contains a subshift, which we call L, consisting of limits of single code words. We show that when C satisfies a unique decomposition property, the topological entropy h(X) of X is determined completely by h(L) and the number of code words of each length. More specifically, we show that h(X) = h(L) exactly when a certain infinite series is less than or equal to 1, and when that series is greater than 1, we give a formula for h(X_C). In the latter case, an immediate corollary (using results of Climenhaga and Thompson) is that X has a unique …
We generalize Brudno's theorem of $1$-dimensional shift dynamical system to $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (or $\mathbb{Z}_+^d$) subshifts. That is to say, in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (or $\mathbb{Z}^d_+$) subshift, the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy is equivalent to the Kolmogorov complexity density almost everywhere for an ergodic shift-invariant measure.
In this work, we study the problem of finding the asymptotic growth rate of the number of of $d$-dimensional arrays with side length $n$ over a given alphabet which avoid a list of one-dimensional "forbidden" words along all cardinal directions, as both $n$ and $d$ tend to infinity. Louidor, Marcus, and the second author called this quantity the "limiting entropy"; it is the limit of a sequence of topological entropies of a sequence of isotropic $\mathbb{Z}^d$ subshifts with the dimension $d$ tending to infinity. We find an expression for this limiting entropy which involves only one-dimension…
Let $π:X\to Y$ be a factor map, where $(X,σ_X)$ and $(Y,σ_Y)$ are subshifts over finite alphabets. Assume that $X$ satisfies weak specification. Let $\ba=(a_1,a_2)\in \R^2$ with $a_1>0$ and $a_2\geq 0$. Let $f$ be a continuous function on $X$ with sufficient regularity (Hölder continuity, for instance). We show that there is a unique shift invariant measure $μ$ on $X$ that maximizes $μ(f)+a_1h_μ(σ_X)+ a_2h_{μ\circ π^{-1}}(σ_Y)$. In particular, taking $f\equiv 0$ we see that there is a unique invariant measure $μ$ on $X$ that maximizes the weighted entropy $a_1h_μ(σ_X)+ a_2h_{μ\circ π^{-1}}(σ_Y…

We study the Borel complexity of sets of normal numbers in several numeration systems. Taking a dynamical point of view, we offer a unified treatment for continued fraction expansions and base $r$ expansions, and their various generalisations: generalised Lüroth series expansions and $β$-expansions. In fact, we consider subshifts over a countable alphabet generated by all possible expansions of numbers in $[0,1)$. Then normal numbers correspond to generic points of shift-invariant measures. It turns out that for these subshifts the set of generic points for a shift-invariant probability measur…
In this paper we show that for every congruent monotileable amenable group $G$ and for every metrizable Choquet simplex $K$, there exists a minimal $G$-subshift, which is free on a full measure set, whose set of invariant probability measures is affine homeomorphic to $K$. If the group is virtually abelian, the subshift is free. Congruent monotileable amenable groups are a generalization of amenable residually finite groups. In particular, we show that this class contains all the infinite countable virtually nilpotent groups. This article is a generalization to congruent monotileable amenable …
We prove that if $Σ_{\mathbf A}(\mathbb N)$ is an irreducible Markov shift space over $\mathbb N$ and $f:Σ_{\mathbf A}(\mathbb N) \rightarrow \mathbb R$ is coercive with bounded variation then there exists a maximizing probability measure for f, whose support lies on a Markov subshift over a finite alphabet. Furthermore, the support of any maximizing measure is contained in this same compact subshift. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first proof beyond the finitely primitive case on the general irreducible non-compact setting. It's also noteworthy that our technique works for the full…
We prove that any divisible dynamical simplex is the set of invariant measures of some Toeplitz subshift. We apply our construction to prove that orbit equivalence of Toeplitz subshifts is Borel bireducible to the universal equivalence relation induced by a Borel action of a nonarchimedean Polish group.
