In an earlier paper of the authors it was shown that the sheaf theoretically based recently developed abstract differential geometry of the first author can in an easy and natural manner incorporate singularities on arbitrary closed nowhere dense sets in Euclidean spaces, singularities which therefore can have arbitrary large positive Lebesgue measure. As also shown, one can construct in such a singular context a de Rham cohomology, as well as a short exponential sequence, both of which are fundamental in differential geometry. In this paper, these results are significantly strengthened, motivated by the so called space-time foam structures in general relativity, where singularities can be dense. In fact, this time one can deal with singularities on arbitrary sets, provided that their complementaries are dense, as well. In particular, the cardinal of the set of singularities can be larger than that of the nonsingular points.
This work is dedicated to some new exotic homological constructions associated with the different Morse-type inequalities for differential forms and vector fields. It contains also survey of ideas developed by the present author in 1986 for this goal.
We prove that the de Rham $L^ϕ$-cohomology of a Riemannian manifold $M$ admiting a convenient triangulation $X$ is isomorphic to the simplicial $\ell^ϕ$-cohomology of $X$ for any Young function $ϕ$. This result implies the quasi-isometry invariance of the first one.
We derive a blow-up formula for the de Rham cohomology of a local system of complex vector spaces on a compact complex manifold. As an application, we obtain the blow-up invariance of $E_{1}$-degeneracy of the Hodge-de Rham spectral sequence associated to a local system of complex vector spaces.
We focus our attention on the de Rham operators' underlying properties which are specified by intrinsic effects of differential geometry structures. And then we apply the procedure of regularization in the context of Lipschitz version of de Rham calculus on metric simplicial complexes with bounded geometry.
This is a survey on the equivariant cohomology of Lie group actions on manifolds, from the point of view of de Rham theory. Emphasis is put on the notion of equivariant formality, as well as on applications to ordinary cohomology and to fixed points.
We prove transverse Weitzenböck identities for the horizontal Laplacians of a totally geodesic foliation. As a consequence, we obtain nullity theorems for the de Rham cohomology assuming only the positivity of curvature quantities transverse to the leaves. Those curvature quantities appear in the adiabatic limit of the canonical variation of the metric.
We define quantum exterior product wedge_h and quantum exterior differential d_h on Poisson manifolds (of which symplectic manifolds are an important class of examples). Quantum de Rham cohomology, which is a deformation quantization of de Rham cohomology, is defined as the cohomology of d_h. We also define quantum Dolbeault cohomology. A version of quantum integral on symplectic manifolds is considered and the correspoding quantum Stokes theorem is proved. We also derive quantum hard Lefschetz theorem. By replacing d by d_h and wedge by wedge_h in the usual definitions, we define many quantum…
We endow the de Rham cohomology of any Poisson or Jacobi manifold with a natural homotopy Frobenius manifold structure. This result relies on a minimal model theorem for multicomplexes and a new kind of a Hodge degeneration condition.
This article constructs Von Neumann invariants for constructible complexes and coherent D-modules on compact complex manifolds, generalizing the work of the author on coherent L 2-cohomology. We formulate a conjectural generalization of Dingoyan's L 2-Mixed Hodge structures in terms of Saito's Mixed Hodge Modules and give partial results in this direction. 2020 AMS Classification: 32J27.
Let $(M,\mathcal{F})$ be a foliated manifold. We prove that there is a canonical isomorphism between the complex of base-like forms $Ω^*_b(M,\mathcal{F})$ of the foliation and the "De Rham complex" of the space of leaves $M/\mathcal{F}$ when considered as a "diffeological" quotient. Consequently, the two corresponding cohomology groups $H^*_b(M,\mathcal{F})$ and $H^*(M/\mathcal{F})$ are isomorphic.
We define quantum exterior product wedge_h and quantum exterior differential d_h on Poisson manifolds, of which symplectic manifolds are an important class of examples. Quantum de Rham cohomology is defined as the cohomology of d_h. We also define quantum Dolbeault cohomology. Quantum hard Lefschetz theorem is proved. We also define a version of quantum integral, and prove the quantum Stokes theorem. By the trick of replacing d by d_h and wedge by wedge_h in the usual definitions, we define many quantum analogues of important objects in differential geometry, e.g. quantum curvature. The quantu…
We exploit the Fedosov-Weinstein-Xu (FWX) resolution proposed in q-alg/9709043 to establish an isomorphism between the ring of Hochschild cohomology of the quantum algebra of functions on a symplectic manifold M and the ring H(M, C((h))) of De Rham cohomology of M with the coefficient field C((h)) without making use of any version of the formality theorem. We also show that the Gerstenhaber bracket induced on H(M,C((h))) via the isomorphism is vanishing. We discuss equivariant properties of the isomorphism and propose an analogue of this statement in an algebraic geometric setting.
We prove an analogue of the de Rham theorem for the extended L^2-cohomology introduced by M. Farber. This is done by establishing that the de Rham complex over a compact closed manifold with coefficients in a flat Hilbert bundle E of A-modules over a finite von Neumann algebra A is chain-homotopy equivalent (with bounded morphisms and homotopy operators) to a combinatorial complex with the same coefficients. This is established by using the Witten deformation of the de Rham complex. We also prove that the de Rham complex is chain-homotopy equivalent to the spectrally truncated de Rham complex …
We propose a produre of reduction a locally conformal symplectic structure. This procedure of reduction can be applied to wide class of submanifolds. There are no local obstructions for this procedure. But there are global obstructions. We find a necessary and sufficient condition when this reduction holds in terms of the special kind of de Rham cohomology class (tangent to the characteristic foliation) of the Lee form.
By using results by D. Witte on the superigidity of lattices in solvable Lie groups we get a different proof of a recent remarkable result obtained by D. Guan on the de Rham cohomology of a compact solvmanifold, i.e. of a quotient of a connected and simply connected solvable Lie group $G$ by a lattice $Γ$. This result can be applied to compute the Betti numbers of a compact solvmanifold $G/Γ$ even in the case that the solvable Lie group $G$ and the lattice $Γ$ do not satisfy the Mostow condition.
We compute the de Rham cohomology of the weak stable foliation of the geodesic flow of a connected orientable closed hyperbolic surface with various coefficients. For most of the coefficients, we also give certain "Hodge decompositions" of the corresponding de Rham complexes, which are not obtained by the usual Hodge theory of foliations. These results are based on unitary representation theory of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. As an application we obtain an answer to a problem considered by Haefliger and Li around 1980.
Given a compact stratified pseudomanifold with a Thom-Mather stratification and a class of riemannian metrics over its regular part, we study the relationships between the $L^{2}$ de Rham and Hodge cohomology and the intersection cohomology of $X$ associated to some perversities. More precisely, to a kind of metric which we call \emph{quasi edge with weights}, we associate two general perversities in the sense of G. Friedman, $p_{g}$ and its dual $q_{g}$. We then show that the absolute $L^{2}$ Hodge cohomology is isomorphic to the maximal $L^{2}$ de Rham cohomology and this is in turn isomorph…
The purpose of this paper is to present a ``Cech-De Rham'' model for the cohomology of leaf spaces. This model lends itself to the construction of characteristic classes (in the cohomology of classifying spaces) by explicit geometrical constructions which are immediate extensions of the standard constructions for manifolds. In particular we rediscover (and explain) the Thurston formula and the Bott formulas for cocycles on diffeomorphism groups. We also use the Cech-De Rham model to explicitly describe the relation between the cohomology of the classifying space, the basic cohomology, and the …
Let $G$ be a connected and non-necessarily compact Lie group acting on a connected manifold $M$. In this short note we announce the following result: for a $G$-invariant closed differential form on $M$, the existence of a closed equivariant extension in the Cartan model for equivariant cohomology is equivalent to the existence of an extension in the homotopy quotient.
There are two de Rham complexes in diffeology. The original one is due to Souriau and the other one is the singular de Rham complex defined by a simplicial differential graded algebra. We compare the first de Rham cohomology groups of the two complexes within the Čech--de Rham spectral sequence by making use of the {\it factor map} which connects the two de Rham complexes. As a consequence, it follows that the singular de Rham cohomology algebra of the irrational torus $T_θ$ is isomorphic to the tensor product of the original de Rham cohomology and the exterior algebra generated by a non-trivi…
For a simply connected (non-nilpotent) solvable Lie group $G$ with a lattice $Γ$ the de Rham and Dolbeault cohomologies of the solvmanifold $G/Γ$ are not in general isomorphic to the cohomologies of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ of $G$. In this paper we construct, up to a finite group, a new Lie algebra $\tilde{\mathfrak g}$ whose cohomology is isomorphic to the de Rham cohomology of $G/Γ$ by using a modification of $G$ associated with a algebraic sub-torus of the Zariski-closure of the image of the adjoint representation. This technique includes the construction due to Guan and developed by t…
We study de Rham cohomology for various differential calculi on finite groups G up to order 8. These include the permutation group S_3, the dihedral group D_4 and the quaternion group Q. Poincare' duality holds in every case, and under some assumptions (essentially the existence of a top form) we find that it must hold in general. A short review of the bicovariant (noncommutative) differential calculus on finite G is given for selfconsistency. Exterior derivative, exterior product, metric, Hodge dual, connections, torsion, curvature, and biinvariant integration can be defined algebraically. A …
Oeljeklaus-Toma (OT) manifolds are complex non-Kähler manifolds whose construction arises from specific number fields. In this note, we compute their de Rham cohomology in terms of invariants associated to the background number field. This is done by two distinct approaches, one using invariant cohomology and the other one using the Leray-Serre spectral sequence. In addition, we compute also their Morse-Novikov cohomology. As an application, we show that the low degree Chern classes of any complex vector bundle on an OT manifold vanish in the real cohomology. Other applications concern the OT …
We introduce a Hilbert $A$-module structure on the higher oscillatory module, where $A$ denotes the $C^*$-algebra of bounded endomorphisms of the basic oscillatory module. We also define the notion of an exterior covariant derivative in an $A$-Hilbert bundle and use it for a construction of an $A$-elliptic complex of differential operators for certain symplectic manifolds equipped with a symplectic connection.
Using the language and terminology of relative homological algebra, in particular that of derived functors, we introduce equivariant cohomology over a general Lie-Rinehart algebra and equivariant de Rham cohomology over a locally trivial Lie groupoid in terms of suitably defined monads (also known as triples) and the associated standard constructions. This extends a characterization of equivariant de Rham cohomology in terms of derived functors developed earlier for the special case where the Lie groupoid is an ordinary Lie group, viewed as a Lie groupoid with a single object; in that theory o…
We study the de Rham 1-cohomology H^1_{DR}(M,G) of a smooth manifold M with values in a Lie group G. By definition, this is the quotient of the set of flat connections in the trivial principle bundle $M\times G$ by the so-called gauge equivalence. We consider the case when M is a compact Kähler manifold and G is a solvable complex linear algebraic group of a special class which contains the Borel subgroups of all complex classical groups and, in particular, the group $T_n(\Bbb C)$ of all triangular matrices. In this case, we get a description of the set H^1_{DR}(M,G) in terms of the 1-cohomolo…
O-minimal geometry generalizes both semialgebraic and subanalytic geometries, and has been very successful in solving special cases of some problems in arithmetic geometry, such as André-Oort conjecture. Among the many tools developed in an o-minimal setting are cohomology theories for abstract-definable continuous manifolds such as singular cohomology, sheaf cohomology and \v Cech cohomology, which have been used for instance to prove Pillay's conjecture concerning definably compact groups. In the present paper we elaborate an o-minimal de Rham cohomology theory for abstract-definable $\mathc…
We show that the de Rham theorem, interpreted as the isomorphism between distributional de Rham cohomology and simplicial homology in the dual dimension for a simplicial decomposition of a compact oriented manifold, is a straightforward consequence of elementary properties of currents. The explicit construction of this isomorphism extends to other cases, such as relative and absolute cohomology spaces of manifolds with corners.
In this paper, we study the perturbative aspects of the half-twisted variant of Witten's topological A-model coupled to a non-dynamical gauge field with Kahler target space X being a G-manifold. Our main objective is to furnish a purely physical interpretation of the equivariant cohomology of the chiral de Rham complex, recently constructed by Lian and Linshaw in [arXiv:math/0501084], called the "chiral equivariant cohomology". In doing so, one finds that key mathematical results such as the vanishing in the chiral equivariant cohomology of positive weight classes, lend themselves to straightf…
Let $\mathbb{F}_{Θ}=G/P_{Θ}$ be a flag manifold associated to a non-compact real simple Lie group $G$ and the parabolic subgroup $% P_{Θ}$. This is a closed subgroup of $G$ determined by a subset $% Θ$ of simple restricted roots of $\mathfrak{g}=Lie(G)$. This paper computes the second de Rham cohomology group of $\mathbb{F}_Θ$. We prove that it zero in general, with some rare exceptions. When it is non-zero, we give a basis of $H^2(\mathbb{F}_Θ,\mathbb{R})$ through the Weil construction of closed 2-forms as characteristic classes of principal fiber bundles. The starting point is the computatio…
This paper extends de Rham theory of smooth manifolds to exploded manifolds. Included are versions of Stokes' theorem, De Rham cohomology, Poincare duality, and integration along the fiber. The resulting cohomology theory is used to define Gromov Witten invariants of exploded manifolds in a separate paper.
Motivated by problems in which data are given over covering generating families, we suggest a new cohomology theory for diffeological spaces, called diffeological Čech cohomology, which is an exact $ \partial $-functor of the section functor for sheaves on diffeological spaces. As applications, under the situations of a setup, i) the generalized Mayer-Vietoris sequence for a diffeological space is established; ii) a version of the de Rham theorem is obtained, which connects diffeological Čech cohomology to the de Rham cohomology. Moreover, we characterize the isomorphism classes of diffeologic…
Let G be a general (not necessarily finite dimensional compact) Lie group, let g be its Lie algebra, let Cg be the cone on g in the category of differential graded Lie algebras, and consider the functor which assigns to a chain complex V the V-valued total de Rham complex of G. We describe the G-equivariant de Rham cohomology in terms of a suitable relative differential graded Ext, defined on the appropriate category of (G,Cg)-modules. The meaning of "relative" is made precise via the dual standard construction associated with the monad involving the aforementioned functor and the associated f…
We identify two Frobenius manifolds obtained from two different differential Gerstenhaber-Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras on a compact Kaehler manifold. One is constructed on the Dolbeault cohomology, and the other on the de Rham cohomology. Our result can be considered as a generalization of the identification of the Dolbeault cohomology ring with the complexified de Rham cohomology ring on a Kaehler manifold.
We introduce smooth L^\infty differential forms on a singular (semialgebraic) set X in R^n. Roughly speaking, a smooth L^\infty differential form is a certain class of equivalence of 'stratified forms', that is, a collection of smooth forms on disjoint smooth subsets (stratification) of X with matching tangential components on the adjacent strata and bounded size (in the metric induced from R^n). We identify the singular homology of X as the homology of the chain complex generated by semialgebraic singular simplices, i.e. continuous semialgebraic maps from the standard simplices into X. Singul…
The chiral de Rham complex of Malikov, Schechtman, and Vaintrob, is a sheaf of differential graded vertex algebras that exists on any smooth manifold $Z$, and contains the ordinary de Rham complex at weight zero. Given a closed 3-form $H$ on $Z$, we construct the twisted chiral de Rham differential $D_H$, which coincides with the ordinary twisted differential in weight zero. We show that its cohomology vanishes in positive weight and coincides with the ordinary twisted cohomology in weight zero. As a consequence, we propose that in a background flux, Ramond-Ramond fields can be interpreted as …
