In order to investigate corrections to the common KdV approximation for surface water waves in a canal, we derive modulation equations for the evolution of long wavelength initial data. We work in Lagrangian coordinates. The equations which govern corrections to the KdV approximation consist of linearized and inhomogeneous KdV equations plus an inhomogeneous wave equation. These equations are explicitly solvable and we prove estimates showing that they do indeed give a significantly better approximation than the KdV equation alone.
It is universally accepted that the cubic, nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) models the dynamics of narrow-bandwidth wave packets consisting of short dispersive waves, while the Kortewegde Vries equation (KdV) models the propagation of long waves in dispersive media. A system that couples the two equations seems attractive to model the interaction of long and short waves and such a system has been studied over the last few decades. However, questions about the validity of the system in the study of water waves were raised in our previous work where we presented our analysis using the fifth…
In order to investigate corrections to the common KdV approximation to long waves, we derive modulation equations for the evolution of long wavelength initial data for a Boussinesq equation. The equations governing the corrections to the KdV approximation are explicitly solvable and we prove estimates showing that they do indeed give a significantly better approximation than the KdV equation alone. We also present the results of numerical experiments which show that the error estimates we derive are essentially optimal.
We consider a quasilinear KdV equation that admits compactly supported traveling wave solutions (compactons). This model is one of the most straightforward instances of degenerate dispersion, a phenomenon that appears in a variety of physical settings as diverse as sedimentation, magma dynamics and shallow water waves. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions with sufficiently smooth, spatially localized initial data.
We consider the Cauchy problem associated to the recently derived higher order hamiltonian model for unidirectional water waves and prove global existence for given data in the Sobolev space $H^s$, $s\geq 1$. We also prove an ill-posedness result by showing that the flow-map is not continuous if the given data has Sobolev regularity $s< 1$. The results obtained in this work are sharp.
We study here the water-waves problem for uneven bottoms in a highly nonlinear regime where the small amplitude assumption of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is enforced. It is known, that for such regimes, a generalization of the KdV equation (somehow linked to the Camassa-Holm equation) can be derived and justified by A. Constantin, D. Lannes "The hydrodynamical relevance of the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Processi equations" when the bottom is flat. We generalize here this result with a new class of equations taking into account variable bottom topographies. Of course, the many variabl…
We study the spectral stability of roll-wave solutions of the viscous St. Venant equations modeling inclined shallow-water flow, both at onset in the small-Froude number or "weakly unstable" limit $F\to 2^+$ and for general values of the Froude number $F$, including the limit $F\to +\infty$. In the former, $F\to 2^+$, limit, the shallow water equations are formally approximated by a Korteweg de Vries/Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (KdV-KS) equation that is a singular perturbation of the standard Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation modeling horizontal shallow water flow. Our main analytical result is to rig…
This paper is devoted to the study of the long wave approximation for water waves under the influence of the gravity and a Coriolis forcing. We start by deriving a generalization of the Boussinesq equations in 1D (in space) and we rigorously justify them as an asymptotic model of the water waves equations. These new Boussinesq equations are not the classical Boussinesq equations. A new term due to the vorticity and the Coriolis forcing appears that can not be neglected. Then, we study the Boussinesq regime and we derive and fully justify different asymptotic models when the bottom is flat : a …
In this article, we will prove $L^2(\mathbb{R})$-stability of $1$-solitons for the KdV equation by using exponential stability property of the semigroup generated by the linearized operator. The proof follows the lines of recent stability argument of Mizumachi [Asymptotic stability of lattice solitons in the energy space, Comm. Math. Phys., (2009)] and Mizumachi, Pego and Quintero [Asymptotic stability of solitary waves in the Benney-Luke model of water waves, Differential Integral Equations, (2013)] which show stability in the energy class by using strong linear stability of solitary waves in…

We study the variable bottom generalized Korteweg-de Vries (bKdV) equation dt u=-dx(dx^2 u+f(u)-b(t,x)u), where f is a nonlinearity and b is a small, bounded and slowly varying function related to the varying depth of a channel of water. Many variable coefficient KdV-type equations, including the variable coefficient, variable bottom KdV equation, can be rescaled into the bKdV. We study the long time behaviour of solutions with initial conditions close to a stable, b=0 solitary wave. We prove that for long time intervals, such solutions have the form of the solitary wave, whose centre and scal…
This work is devoted to prove the exponential decay for the energy of solutions of a higher order Korteweg -de Vries (KdV)--Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation on a periodic domain with a localized damping mechanism. Following the method in [11], which combines energy estimates, multipliers and compactness arguments, the problem is reduced to prove the Unique Continuation Property (UCP) for weak solutions of the model. Then, this is done by deriving Carleman estimates for a system of coupled elliptic-hyperbolic equations.
In this paper we derive and prove the wellposedness of a deep water model that generalizes the Saut-Xu system for nonflat bottoms. Then, we present a new numerical method based on a splitting approach for studying this system. The advantage of this method is that it does not require any low pass filter to avoid spurious oscillations. We prove a local error estimate and we show that our scheme represents a good approximation of order one in time. Then, we perform some numerical experiments which confirm our theoretical result and we study three physical phenomena : the evolution of water waves …
In this paper we focus on the water waves problem for uneven bottoms on a two-dimensionnal domain. Starting from the symmetric Boussinesq systems derived in [Chazel, Influence of topography on long water waves, 2007], we recover the uncoupled Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) approximation justified by Schneider and Wayne for flat bottoms, and by Iguchi in the context of bottoms tending to zero at infinity at a substantial rate. The goal of this paper is to investigate the validity of this approximation for more general bathymetries. We exhibit two kinds of topography for which this approximation diverg…

Formally second-order correct, mathematical descriptions of long-crested water waves propagating mainly in one direction are derived. These equations are analogous to the first-order approximations of KdV- or BBM-type. The advantage of these more complex equations is that their solutions corresponding to physically relevant initial perturbations of the rest state may be accurate on a much longer time scale. The initial-value problem for the class of equations that emerges from our derivation is then considered. A local well-posedness theory is straightforwardly established by way of a contract…
In 1895, Korteweg and de Vries (KdV), derived their celebrated equation describing the motion of waves of long wavelength in shallow water. In doing so they made a number of quite reasonable assumptions, incompressibility of the water and irrotational fluid. The resulting equation, the celebrated KdV equation, has been shown to be a very reasonable description of real water waves. However there are other phenomena which have an impact on the shape of the wave, that of vorticity and viscosity. This paper examines how a constant vorticity affects the shape of waves in electrohydrodynamics. For c…
Our aim is to study the effect of a continuous prescribed density variation on the propagation of ocean waves. More precisely, we derive KdV-type shallow water model equations for unidirectional flows along the Equator from the full governing equations by taking into account a prescribed but arbitrary depth-dependent density distribution. In contrast to the case of constant density, we obtain for each fixed water depth a different model equation for the horizontal component of the velocity field. We derive explicit formulas for traveling wave solutions of these model equations and perform a de…
We prove that the Cauchy problem of the mass-critical generalized KdV equation is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R)$ for $s>6/13$. Of course, we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state in the focusing case. The main approach is the "I-method" together with the multilinear correction analysis. Moreover, we use some "partially refined" argument to lower the upper control of the multiplier in the resonant interactions. The result improves the previous works of Fonseca, Linares, Ponce (2003) and Farah (2009).
The aim of this work is to study solitary water wave interactions between two topographic obstacles for the forced Korteweg-de Vries equation (fKdV). Focusing on the details of the interactions, we identify regimes in which solitary wave interactions maintain two well separated crests and regimes where the number of local maxima varies according to the laws $2\rightarrow 1\rightarrow 2\rightarrow 1\rightarrow 2$ or $2\rightarrow 1\rightarrow 2$. It shows that the geometric Lax-categorization of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) two-soliton interactions still holds for the fKdV equation.
In this paper, we study various dissipative mechanics associated with the Boussinesq systems which model two-dimensional small amplitude long wavelength water waves. We will show that the decay rate for the damped one-directional model equations, such as the KdV and BBM equations, holds for some of the damped Boussinesq systems which model two-directional waves.
We prove an asymptotic stability result for the water wave equations linearized around small solitary waves. The equations we consider govern irrotational flow of a fluid with constant density bounded below by a rigid horizontal bottom and above by a free surface under the influence of gravity neglecting surface tension. For sufficiently small amplitude waves, with waveform well-approximated by the well-known sech-squared shape of the KdV soliton, solutions of the linearized equations decay at an exponential rate in an energy norm with exponential weight translated with the wave profile. This …
We consider the general Degasperis-Procesi model of shallow water out-flows. This fife parametric family of conservation laws contains, in particular, KdV, Camassa-Holm, and Degasperis-Procesi equations. The main result consists of a criterion which guarantees the existence of a smooth soliton type solution. We discuss also the scenario of soliton interaction for this model in the nonintegrable case.
The classical equations of irrotational water waves have recently been reformulated as a system of two equations, one of which is an explicit non-local equation for the wave height and for the velocity potential evaluated on the free surface. Here, in the two dimensional case, (a) we generalise the relevant formulation to the case of constant vorticity, as well as to the case where the free surface is described by a multi-valued function; (b) in the case of travelling waves we derive an upper bound for the free surface; (c) in the case of constant vorticity we construct a sequence of nearly Ha…
We review here the derivation of many of the most important models that appear in the literature (mainly in coastal oceanography) for the description of waves in shallow water. We show that these models can be obtained using various asymptotic expansions of the "turbulent" and non-hydrostatic terms that appear in the equations that result from the vertical integration of the free surface Euler equations. Among these models are the well-known nonlinear shallow water (NSW), Boussinesq and Serre-Green-Naghdi (SGN) equations for which we review several pending open problems. More recent models suc…
This paper investigates the stability of traveling wave solutions to the free boundary Euler equations with a submerged point vortex. We prove that sufficiently small-amplitude waves with small enough vortex strength are conditionally orbitally stable. In the process of obtaining this result, we develop a quite general stability/instability theory for bound state solutions of a large class of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems in the presence of symmetry. This is in the spirit of the seminal work of Grillakis, Shatah, and Strauss, but with hypotheses that are relaxed in a number of ways …
The viability of the Whitham equation as a nonlocal model for capillary-gravity waves at the surface of an inviscid incompressible fluid is under study. A nonlocal Hamiltonian system of model equations is derived using the Hamiltonian structure of the free surface water wave problem and the Dirichlet-Neumann operator. The system features gravitational and capillary effects, and when restricted to one-way propagation, the system reduces to the capillary Whitham equation. It is shown numerically that in various scaling regimes the Whitham equation gives a more accurate approximation of the free-…
We investigate the decay for $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ of weak Sobolev type solutions of semilinear nonlocal equations $Pu=F(u)$. We consider the case when $P=p(D)$ is an elliptic Fourier multiplier with polyhomogeneous symbol $p(ξ)$ and derive sharp algebraic decay estimates in terms of weighted Sobolev norms. In particular, we state a precise relation between the singularity of the symbol at the origin and the rate of decay of the corresponding solutions. Our basic example is the celebrated Benjamin-Ono equation {equation} \label{BO}(|D|+c)u=u^2, \qquad c>0,{equation} for internal solitary wav…
The Whitham equation is a nonlocal shallow water-wave model which combines the quadratic nonlinearity of the KdV equation with the linear dispersion of the full water wave problem. Whitham conjectured the existence of a highest, cusped, traveling-wave solution, and his conjecture was recently verified in the periodic case by Ehrnström and Wahlén. In the present paper we prove it for solitary waves. Like in the periodic case, the proof is based on global bifurcation theory but with several new challenges. In particular, the small-amplitude limit is singular and cannot be handled using regular b…
We are concerned with numerical approximations of breather solutions for the cubic Whitham equation which arises as a water-wave model for interfacial waves. The model combines strong nonlinearity with the non-local character of the water-wave problem. The equation is non-integrable as suggested by the inelastic interaction of solitary waves. As a non local model, it generalizes, in the low frequency limit, the well known modified KdV (mKdV) equation which is a completely-integrable model. The mKdV equation has breather solutions, i.e. periodic in time and localized in space biparametric solut…
We consider the gravity water waves system in the case of a one dimensional interface, for sufficiently smooth and localized initial data, and prove global existence of small solutions. This improves the almost global existence result of Wu \cite{WuAG}. We also prove that the asymptotic behavior of solutions as time goes to infinity is different from linear, unlike the three dimensional case \cite{GMS2,Wu3DWW}. In particular, we identify a suitable nonlinear logarithmic correction and show modified scattering. The solutions we construct in this paper appear to be the first global smooth nontri…
In this paper, we study the motion of the free surface of a body of fluid over a variable bottom, in a long wave asymptotic regime. We assume that the bottom of the fluid region can be described by a stationary random process $β(x, ω)$ whose variations take place on short length scales and which are decorrelated on the length scale of the long waves. This is a question of homogenization theory in the scaling regime for the Boussinesq and KdV equations. The analysis is performed from the point of view of perturbation theory for Hamiltonian PDEs with a small parameter, in the context of which we…
