We study here the water-waves problem for uneven bottoms in a highly nonlinear regime where the small amplitude assumption of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is enforced. It is known, that for such regimes, a generalization of the KdV equation (somehow linked to the Camassa-Holm equation) can be derived and justified by A. Constantin, D. Lannes "The hydrodynamical relevance of the Camassa-Holm and Degasperis-Processi equations" when the bottom is flat. We generalize here this result with a new class of equations taking into account variable bottom topographies. Of course, the many variable depth KdV equations existing in the literature are recovered as particular cases. Various regimes for the topography regimes are investigated and we prove consistency of these models, as well as a full justification for some of them. We also study the problem of wave breaking for our new variable depth and highly nonlinear generalizations of the KDV equations.
We prove well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a class of third order quasilinear evolution equations with variable coefficients in projective Gevrey spaces. The class considered is connected with several equations in Mathematical Physics as the KdV and KdVB equation and some of their many generalizations.
Starting from a stochastic Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation on a lattice, the previous work [ST21] by the last two authors gave a derivation of the homogeneous 3-wave kinetic equation at the kinetic limit under very general assumptions: the initial condition is out of equilibrium, the dimension $d\ge 2$, the smallness of the nonlinearity $λ$ is allowed to be independent of the size of the lattice, the weak noise is chosen not to compete with the weak nonlinearity and not to inject energy into the equation. In the present work, we build on the framework of [ST21], following the formal derivatio…
We study here some asymptotic models for the propagation of internal and surface waves in a two-fluid system. We focus on the so-called long wave regime for one dimensional waves, and consider the case of a flat bottom. Starting from the classical Boussinesq/Boussinesq system, we introduce a new family of equivalent symmetric hyperbolic systems. We study the well-posedness of such systems, and the asymptotic convergence of their solutions towards solutions of the full Euler system. Then, we provide a rigorous justification of the so-called KdV approximation, stating that any bounded solution o…
In most of the studies concerning nonlinear wave equations of Korteweg-de Vries type, the authors focus on waves of elevation. Such waves have general form ~$u_{\text{u}}(x,t)=A f(x-vt)$, where ~$A>0$. In this communication we show that if ~$u_{\text{up}}(x,t)=A f(x-vt)$ is the solution of a given nonlinear equation, then $u_{\text{down}}(x,t)=-A f(x-vt)$, that is, an inverted wave is the solution of the same equation, but with changed sign of the parameter ~$α$. This property is common for KdV, extended KdV, fifth-order KdV, Gardner equations, and generalizations for cases with an uneven bott…
We study the variable bottom generalized Korteweg-de Vries (bKdV) equation dt u=-dx(dx^2 u+f(u)-b(t,x)u), where f is a nonlinearity and b is a small, bounded and slowly varying function related to the varying depth of a channel of water. Many variable coefficient KdV-type equations, including the variable coefficient, variable bottom KdV equation, can be rescaled into the bKdV. We study the long time behaviour of solutions with initial conditions close to a stable, b=0 solitary wave. We prove that for long time intervals, such solutions have the form of the solitary wave, whose centre and scal…
We revisit the phenomenon of instability of solitons in the two dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, $u_t + \partial_{x_1} (Δu + u^p) = 0, (x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb R^2$. It is known that solitons are unstable in this two dimensional equation for nonlinearities $p > 3$. This was shown by Anne de Bouard in [4] generalizing the arguments of Bona-Souganidis-Strauss in [1] for the generalized KdV equation. In this paper, we use a different method to obtain the instability of solitons, namely, truncation and monotonicity propert…
In this work we present a new method for solving of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation q'_t = - \dfrac{3}{2} q q'_x + \dfrac{1}{4} q"'_{xxx}. The proposed method is a particular case of the theory of evolutionary vessels, developed in this work. Inverse scattering of the Sturm-Liouville operator and evolution of its potential are the basic ingredients, similar to the existing methods developed by Gardner-Greene-Kruskal-Miura (1967), Zacharov-Shabbath (1974) and Peter Lax (1977). Evolutionary KdV vessel may be considered as a generalization of these previous works. The advantage of the new me…
This paper is devoted to the study of the long wave approximation for water waves under the influence of the gravity and a Coriolis forcing. We start by deriving a generalization of the Boussinesq equations in 1D (in space) and we rigorously justify them as an asymptotic model of the water waves equations. These new Boussinesq equations are not the classical Boussinesq equations. A new term due to the vorticity and the Coriolis forcing appears that can not be neglected. Then, we study the Boussinesq regime and we derive and fully justify different asymptotic models when the bottom is flat : a …
We discuss a new non-linear PDE, u_t + (2 u_xx/u) u_x = epsilon u_xxx, invariant under scaling of dependent variable and referred to here as SIdV. It is one of the simplest such translation and space-time reflection-symmetric first order advection-dispersion equations. This PDE (with dispersion coefficient unity) was discovered in a genetic programming search for equations sharing the KdV solitary wave solution. It provides a bridge between non-linear advection, diffusion and dispersion. Special cases include the mKdV and linear dispersive equations. We identify two conservation laws, though i…
In this work we present a scheme for construction of solutions for evolutionary PDEs of some polynomial types q'_t = P(q,q'_x,...), where P is a polynomial in a finite number of variables. This scheme is a generalization of the existing technique for solution of completely integrable PDEs using Inverse Scattering of the Sturm-Liouville differential equation. The KdV equation q'_t = - 3/2 q q'_x + 1/4 q"'_{xxx} is a special case, corresponding to type 1 evolutionary equations. We present a complete solution of type 0, and present a KdV hierarchy corresponding to infinite number of polynomial ev…
We start by constructing a Hilbert manifold T of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle (modulo the group of bi-holomorphic self-mappings of the disc). This space, which could be thought of as a completion of the universal Teichmueller space, is endowed with a right-invariant Kaehler metric. Using results from the theory of quasiconformal mappings we construct an embedding of T into the infinite dimensional Segal-Wilson Grassmannian. The latter turns out to be a very natural ambient space for T. This allows us to prove that T's sectional curvature is negative in the holomorphic d…
Our aim is to study the effect of a continuous prescribed density variation on the propagation of ocean waves. More precisely, we derive KdV-type shallow water model equations for unidirectional flows along the Equator from the full governing equations by taking into account a prescribed but arbitrary depth-dependent density distribution. In contrast to the case of constant density, we obtain for each fixed water depth a different model equation for the horizontal component of the velocity field. We derive explicit formulas for traveling wave solutions of these model equations and perform a de…
We study the spectral stability of a family of periodic standing wave solutions to the generalized KdV (g-KdV) in a neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane using what amounts to a rigorous Whitham modulation theory calculation. In particular we are interested in understanding the role played by the null directions of the linearized operator in the stability of the traveling wave to perturbations of long wavelength. A study of the normal form of the characteristic polynomial of the monodromy map (the periodic Evan's function) in a neighborhood of the origin in the spectral plane leads …
The Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) and various generalized, most often semi- linear versions have been studied for about 50 years. Here, the focus is made on a quasi-linear generalization of the KdV equation, which has a fairly general Hamil- tonian structure. This paper presents a local in time well-posedness result, that is existence and uniqueness of a solution and its continuity with respect to the initial data. The proof is based on the derivation of energy estimates, the major inter- est being the method used to get them. The goal is to make use of the structural properties of the equa…
We consider periodic solutions to equations of Korteweg-Devries type. While the stability theory for periodic waves has received much some attention the theory is much less developed than the analogous theory for solitary wave stability, and appears to be mathematically richer. We prove an index theorem giving an exact count of the number of unstable eigenvalues of the linearized operator in terms of the number of zeros of the derivative of the traveling wave profile together with geometric information about a certain map between the constants of integration of the ordinary differential equati…
We prove that solitons (or solitary waves) of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, a physically relevant high dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation appearing in Plasma Physics, and having mixed KdV and nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) dynamics, are strongly asymptotically stable in the energy space in the physical region. We also prove that the sum of well-arranged solitons is stable in the same space. Orbital stability of ZK solitons is well-known since the work of de Bouard. Our proofs follow the ideas by Martel and Martel and Merle, applied for generalized KdV equat…
We show that breather solutions of the Gardner equation, a natural generalization of the KdV and mKdV equations, are $H^2(\mathbb{R})$ stable. Through a variational approach, we characterize Gardner breathers as minimizers of a new Lyapunov functional and we study the associated spectral problem, through $(i)$ the analysis of the spectrum of explicit linear systems (\emph{spectral stability}), and $(ii)$ controlling degenerated directions by using low regularity conservation laws.
We propose integrable discretizations of derivative nonlinear Schroedinger (DNLS) equations such as the Kaup-Newell equation, the Chen-Lee-Liu equation and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation by constructing Lax pairs. The discrete DNLS systems admit the reduction of complex conjugation between two dependent variables and possess bi-Hamiltonian structure. Through transformations of variables and reductions, we obtain novel integrable discretizations of the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS), modified KdV (mKdV), mixed NLS, matrix NLS, matrix KdV, matrix mKdV, coupled NLS, coupled Hirota, coupled Sasa-Sats…
In this paper we prove local well-posedness of a space-time fractional generalization of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a power-type nonlinearity. The linear equation coincides with a model proposed by Naber, and displays a nonlocal behavior both in space and time which accounts for long-range interactions and a so-called memory effect. Because of a loss of derivatives produced by the latter and the lack of semigroup structure of the solution operator, we employ a strategy of proof based on exploiting some smoothing effect similar to that used by Kenig, Ponce and Vega for the KdV equa…
