We study one-sided Markov shifts, corresponding to positively recurrent Markov chains with countable (finite or infinite) state spaces. The following classification problem is considered: when two one-sided Markov shifts are isomorphic up to a measure preserving isomorphism In this paper we solve the problem for the class of rho-uniform (or finitely rho-Bernoulli) one-sided Markov shifts considered in Ru_6
We show that every ergodic rho-uniform Markov shift T can be represented in a canonical form T = T_G by means of a canonical (uniquely determined by T) stochastic graph G. In the canonical form, two such shifts T_{G_1} and T_{G_2} are isomorphic if and only if their canonical stochastic graphs G_1 and G_2 are isomorphic.
We introduce notions of suspension and flow equivalence on one-sided topological Markov shifts, which we call one-sided suspension and one-sided flow equivalence, respectively. We prove that one-sided flow equivalence is equivalent to continuous orbit equivalence on one-sided topological Markov shifts. We also show that the zeta function of the flow on a one-sided suspension is a dynamical zeta function with some potential function and that the set of certain dynamical zeta functions is invariant under one-sided flow equivalence of topological Markov shifts.
We will characterize topological conjugate one-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of their subgroups of continuous full groups and subalgebras of Cuntz--Krieger algebras.
We will characterize topological conjugacy classes of one-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of the associated Cuntz--Krieger algebras and its gauge actions with potentials.
We introduce a notion of coded equivalence in one-sided topological Markov shifts. The notion is inspired by coding theory. One-sided topological conjugacy implies coded equivalence. We will show that coded equivalence implies continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts.
It is well-known that discrete-time finite-state Markov Chains, which are described by one-sided conditional probabilities which describe a dependence on the past as only dependent on the present, can also be described as one-dimensional Markov Fields, that is, nearest-neighbour Gibbs measures for finite-spin models, which are described by two-sided conditional probabilities. In such Markov Fields the time interpretation of past and future is being replaced by the space interpretation of an interior volume, surrounded by an exterior to the left and to the right. If we relax the Markov requirem…
In this review-type paper written at the occasion of the Oberwolfach workshop {\em One-sided vs. Two-sided stochastic processes} (february 22-29, 2020), we discuss and compare Markov properties and generalisations thereof in more directions, as well as weaker forms of conditional dependence, again either in one or more directions. In particular, we discuss in both contexts various extensions of Markov chains and Markov fields and their properties, such as $g$-measures, Variable Length Markov Chains, Variable Neighbourhood Markov Fields, Variable Neighbourhood (Parsimonious) Random Fields, and …
We study the equilibrium behaviour of a two-sided topological Markov shift with a countable number of states. We assume the potential associated with this shift is Walters with finite first variation and that the shift is topologically transitive. We show the equilibrium measure of the system is Bernoulli up to a period. In the process we generalize several theorems on countable Markov shifts. We prove a variational principle and the uniqueness of equilibrium measures. A key step is to show that functions with Walters property on a two-sided shift are cohomologous to one-sided functions with t…
Ott, Tomforde, and Willis proposed a useful compactification for one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets. Building from their idea we develop a notion of two-sided shift spaces over infinite alphabets, with an eye towards generalizing a result of Kitchens. As with the one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets our shift spaces are compact Hausdorff spaces but, in contrast to the one-sided setting, our shift map is continuous everywhere. We show that many of the classical results from symbolic dynamics are still true for our two-sided shift spaces. In particular, while for one-sided shifts the p…
The full one sided shift space over finite symbols is approximated by an increasing sequence of finite subsets of the space. The Laplacian on the space is then defined as a renormalised limit of the difference operators defined on these subsets. In this work, we determine the spectrum of these difference operators completely, using the method of spectral decimation. Further, we prove that under certain conditions, the renormalised eigenvalues of the difference operators converge to an eigenvalue of the Laplacian.
We study discrete flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts by using extended Ruelle algebras. We characterize flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts in terms of conjugacy of certain actions weighted by ceiling functions of two-dimensional torus on the stabilized extended Ruelle algebras for the Markov shifts.
We will study torus actions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras trivially acting on its canonical maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebras from the view points of continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided topological Markov shifts and flow equivalence of two-sided topological Markov shifts.
The class of normal subshifts includes irreducible infinite topological Markov shifts, irreducible infinite sofic shifts, synchronized systems, Dyck shifts, $β$-shifts, substitution minimal shifts, and so on. We will characterize one-sided topological conjugacy classes of normal subshifts in terms of the associated $C^*$-algebras and its gauge actions with potentials.
We study KMS states for gauge actions with potential functions on Cuntz--Krieger algebras whose underlying one-sided topological Markov shifts are continuous orbit equivalent. As a result, we have a certain relationship between topological entropy of continuous orbit equivalent one-sided topological Markov shifts.
Let A,B be square irreducible matrices with entries in {0,1}. We will show that if the one-sided topological Markov shifts (X_A,σ_A) and (X_B,σ_B) are continuously orbit equivalent, then the two-sided topological Markov shifts (\bar X_A,\barσ_A) and (\bar X_B,\barσ_B) are flow equivalent, and hence det(id-A)=det(id-B). As a result, the one-sided topological Markov shifts (X_A,σ_A) and (X_B,σ_B) are continuously orbit equivalent if and only if the Cuntz-Krieger algebras O_A and O_B are isomorphic and det(id-A)=det(id-B).
We show that the one-sided Dyck shift has a unique tail invariant topologically $σ$-finite measure (up to scaling). This invariant measure of the one sided Dyck turns out to be a shift-invariant probability. Furthermore, it is one of the two ergodic probabilities obtaining maximal entropy. For the two sided Dyck shift we show that there are exactly three ergodic double-tail invariant probabilities. We show that the two sided Dyck has a double-tail invariant probability, which is also shift invariant, with entropy strictly less than the topological entropy.
In a previous paper by the author, it was shown that the One sided Dyck is uniquely ergodic with respect to the one sided-tail relation, where the tail invariant probability is also shift invariant and obtains the topological entropy. In this paper we show that the two sided Dyck has a double-tail invariant probability, which is also shift invariant, with entropy strictly less than the topological entropy. We also prove that this probability, along with the two equilibrium probabilities of the Dyck shift are the only ergodic double-tail invariant probabilities for the Dyck shift.
We define a notion of (one-sided) shift spaces over infinite alphabets. Unlike many previous approaches to shift spaces over countable alphabets, our shift spaces are compact Hausdorff spaces. We examine shift morphisms between these shift spaces, and identify three distinct classes that generalize the shifts of finite type. We show that when our shift spaces satisfy a property that we call "row-finite", then shift morphisms on them may be identified with sliding block codes. As applications, we show that if two (possibly infinite) directed graphs have edge shifts that are conjugate, then the …
Topological behavior, such as chaos, irreducibility, and mixing of a one-sided shift of finite type, is well elucidated. Meanwhile, the investigation of multidimensional shifts, for instance, textile systems is difficult and only a few results have been obtained so far. This paper studies shifts defined on infinite trees, which are called tree-shifts. Infinite trees have a natural structure of one-sided symbolic dynamical systems equipped with multiple shift maps and constitute an intermediate class in between one-sided shifts and multidimensional shifts. We have shown not only an irreducible …
We will characterize topologically conjugate two-sided topological Markov shifts $(\bar{X}_A,\barσ_A)$ in terms of the associated asymptotic Ruelle $C^*$-algebras ${\mathcal{R}}_A$ with its commutative $C^*$-subalgebras $C(\bar{X}_A)$ and the canonical circle actions. We will also show that extended Ruelle algebras ${\widetilde{\mathcal{R}}}_A$, which are purely infinite version of the asymptotic Ruelle algebras, with its commutative $C^*$-subalgebras $C(\bar{X}_A)$ and the canonical torus actions $γ^A$ are complete invariants for topological conjugacy of two-sided topological Markov shifts. W…
'Generalized del Junco-Rudolph's map', a sub-family of generalized Chacon's map (\cite{FER1}), is introduced. A skew product related to the structure of the Generalized del Junco-Rudolph's map is introduced. A Relative Prime Relation, $h_{k+1}\equiv 1 \mod q$ is verified, based on the proposition of iterations of this skew product. We say a measure-preserving transformation $T$ is totally rank one if $T^{q}$ is rank one for every $q\in \mathbb{N}$. In this paper, we show that of every Generalized del Junco-Rudolph's map is totally rank one.
We study the automorphism group of an infinite minimal shift $(X,σ)$ such that the complexity difference function, $p(n+1)-p(n)$, is bounded. We give some new bounds on $\mbox{Aut}(X,σ)/\langle σ\rangle$ and also study the one-sided case. For a class of Toeplitz shifts, including the class of shifts defined by constant length primitive substitutions with a coincidence and with height one, we show that the two-sided automorphism group is a cyclic group. We next focus on shifts generated by primitive constant length substitutions. For these shifts, we give an algorithm that computes their two-si…
Path sets are spaces of one-sided infinite symbol sequences associated to pointed graphs (G_v_0), which are edge-labeled directed graphs G with a distinguished vertex v_0. Such sets arise naturally as address labels in geometric fractal constructions and in other contexts. The resulting set of symbol sequences need not be closed under the one-sided shift. this paper establishes basic properties of the structure and symbolic dynamics of path sets, and shows they are a strict generalization of one-sided sofic shifts.
We introduce the notion of balanced strong shift equivalence between square nonnegative integer matrices, and show that two finite graphs with no sinks are one-sided eventually conjugate if and only if their adjacency matrices are conjugate to balanced strong shift equivalent matrices. Moreover, we show that such graphs are eventually conjugate if and only if one can be reached by the other via a sequence of out-splits and balanced in-splits; the latter move being a variation of the classical in-split move introduced by Williams in his study of shifts of finite type. We also relate one-sided e…
In this paper we calculate Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy $h_M(S)$ of the generalized Markov shift associated with a contractive Markov system (CMS) \cite{Wer1} using the coding map constructed in \cite{Wer3}. We show that \[h_M(S)=-\sum\limits_{e\in E}\int\limits_{K_{i(e)}} p_e\log p_edμ\] where $μ$ is a unique invariant Borel probability measure of the CMS. I. Werner, Contractive Markov systems, J. We associate to each discrete partial dynamical system a universal C*-algebra generated by partial isometries satisfying relations given by a Boolean algebra connected to the discrete partial dynamical system in question. We show that for symbolic dynamical systems like one-sided and two-sided shift spaces and topological Markov chains with an arbitrary state space the C*-algebras usually associated to them, can be obtained in this way. As a consequence of this, we will be able to show that for two-sided shift spaces having a certain property, the crossed product of the two-sided shift space i…
We explore the topological full group [[G]] of an essentially principal etale groupoid G on a Cantor set. When G is minimal, we show that [[G]] (and its certain normal subgroup) is a complete invariant for the isomorphism class of the etale groupoid G. Furthermore, when G is either almost finite or purely infinite, the commutator subgroup D([[G]]) is shown to be simple. The etale groupoid G arising from a one-sided irreducible shift of finite type is a typical example of a purely infinite minimal groupoid. For such G, [[G]] is thought of as a generalization of the Higman-Thompson group. We pro…
This paper studies subsets of one-sided shift spaces on a finite alphabet. Such subsets arise in symbolic dynamics, in fractal constructions, and in number theory. We study a family of decimation operations, which extract subsequences of symbol sequences in infinite arithmetic progressions, and show they are closed under composition. We also study a family of $n$-ary interleaving operations, one for each $n \ge 1$. Given subsets $X_0, X_1, ..., X_{n-1}$ of the shift space, the $n$-ary interleaving operator produces a set whose elements combine individual elements ${\bf x}_i$, one from each $X_…
Two cellular automata are strongly conjugate if there exists a shift-commuting conjugacy between them. We prove that the following two sets of pairs $(F,G)$ of one-dimensional one-sided cellular automata over a full shift are recursively inseparable: (i) pairs where $F$ has strictly larger topological entropy than $G$, and (ii) pairs that are strongly conjugate and have zero topological entropy. Because there is no factor map from a lower entropy system to a higher entropy one, and there is no embedding of a higher entropy system into a lower entropy system, we also get as corollaries that the…
We show that if the complexity difference function p(n+1)-p(n) of a infinite minimal shift is bounded, then the the automorphism group of the one-sided shift is finite, and the automorphism group of the corresponding two-sided shift "modulo the shift" is finite. For the minimal Sturmian and minimal substitution shifts, the bounds can be explicitly computed, and for linearly recurrent shifts, the bound can be expressed as a function of the linear recurrence constant. We also show that any endomorphism of a linearly recurrent shift is a root of a power of the shift map.
We give conditions for when continuous orbit equivalence of one-sided shift spaces implies flow equivalence of the associated two-sided shift spaces. Using groupoid techniques, we prove that this is always the case for shifts of finite type. This generalises a result of Matsumoto and Matui from the irreducible to the general case. We also prove that a pair of one-sided shift spaces of finite type are continuously orbit equivalent if and only if their groupoids are isomorphic, and that the corresponding two-sided shifts are flow equivalent if and only if the groupoids are stably isomorphic. As …
We establish the large deviation principle for a topological Markov shift over infinite alphabet which satisfies strong combinatorial assumptions called ``finite irreducibility'' or ``finite primitiveness''. More precisely, we assume the existence of a Gibbs state for a potential $ϕ$ in the sense of Bowen, and prove the level-2 Large Deviation Principles for the distribution of empirical means under the Gibbs state, as well as that of weighted periodic points and iterated pre-images. The rate function is written with the pressure and the free energy associated with the potential $ϕ$.
Let $σ:\boldsymbolΣ\to\boldsymbolΣ$ be the left shift acting on $ \boldsymbolΣ $, a one-sided Markov subshift on a countable alphabet. Our intention is to guarantee the existence of $σ$-invariant Borel probabilities that maximize the integral of a given locally Hölder continuous potential $ A : \boldsymbolΣ \to \mathbb R $. Under certain conditions, we are able to show not only that $A$-maximizing probabilities do exist, but also that they are characterized by the fact their support lies actually in a particular Markov subshift on a finite alphabet. To that end, we make use of objects dual to …
Shift spaces with the specification property are intrinsically ergodic, i.e. they have a unique measure of maximal entropy. This can fail for shifts with the weaker almost specification property. We define a new property called one-sided almost specification, which lies in between specification and almost specification, and prove that it guarantees intrinsic ergodicity if the corresponding mistake function g is bounded. We also show that uniqueness may fail for unbounded g such as log log n. Our results have consequences for almost specification: we prove that almost specification with g=1 imp…
We will study several subgroups of continuous full groups of one-sided topological Markov shifts from the view points of cohomology groups of full group actions on the shift spaces. We also study continuous orbit equivalence and strongly continuous orbit equivalence in terms of these subgroups of the continuous full groups and the cohomology groups.
We construct inhomogenous Markov measures for which the shift is of Kreiger type ${\rm III}_{1}$. These measures are fully supported on a toplogical markov shift space of the hyperbolic toral automorphism $f(x,y)=\left(\{x+y\},x\right):\mathbb{T}^{2}\to\mathbb{T}^{2}$ and are used in a subsequent paper in the construction of $C^{1}$ Anosov diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^{2}$ without an absolutely continuous invariant measure.
The Lyapunov exponents of GL(2)-cocycles over Markov shifts depend continuously on the underlying data, that is, on the matrix coefficients and the Markov measure transition probabilities.
A profinite group equipped with an expansive endomorphism is equivalent to a one-sided group shift. We show that these groups have a very restricted structure. More precisely, we show that any such group can be decomposed into a finite sequence of full one-sided group shifts and two finite groups.
We show that strongly positively recurrent Markov shifts (in particular shifts of finite type) are classified up to Borel conjugacy by their entropy, period and their numbers of periodic points.
We study the neutral periodic points of the Markov-Dyck shifts of finite strongly connected directed graphs. Under certain hypothesis on the structure of the graphs we show, that the topological conjugacy of their Markov-Dyck shifts implies the isomorphism of the graphs.
We show that the automorphism group of a one-dimensional full shift (the group of reversible cellular automata) does not satisfy the Tits alternative. That is, we construct a finitely-generated subgroup which is not virtually solvable yet does not contain a free group on two generators. We give constructions both in the two-sided case (spatially acting group $\Z$) and the one-sided case (spatially acting monoid $\N$, alphabet size at least eight). Lack of Tits alternative follows for several groups of symbolic (dynamical) origin: automorphism groups of two-sided one-dimensional uncountable sof…
Almost isomorphism is an equivalence relation on countable state Markov shifts which provides a strong version of Borel conjugacy; still, for mixing SPR shifts, entropy is a complete invariant of almost isomorphism. In this paper, we establish a class of potentials on countable state Markov shifts whose thermodynamic formalism is respected by almost isomorphism.
We describe structural properties of strongly connected finite directed graphs, that are invariants of the topological conjugacy of their Markov-Dyck shifts. For strongly connected finite directed graphs with these properties topological conjugacy of their Markov-Dyck shifts implies isomorphism of the graphs.
We provide a quantification of the uniqueness of Gibbs measure for topologically mixing countable Markov shifts with locally Hölder continuous potentials. Corollaries for speed of convergence for approximation by finite subsystems are also given.
We study one-sided substitution subshifts, and how they can be represented using Bratteli-Vershik systems. In particular we focus on minimal recognizable substitutions such that the generated one-sided substitution subshift contains only one non-shift-invertible element (a branch point), and we call these substitutions quasi-invertible. We give an algorithm to check whether a substitution is quasi-invertible, and show that any substitution with a rational Perron value is orbit equivalent to a quasi-invertible substitution. If the quasi-invertible substitution is left proper, then its subshift …
It is shown that each conservative nonsingular Bernoulli shift is either of type $II_1$ or $III_1$. Moreover, in the latter case the corresponding Maharam extension of the shift is a $K$-automorphism. This extends earlier results obtained by Z.~Kosloff for the equilibrial shifts. Nonequilibrial shifts of type $III_1$ are constructed. We further generalize (partly) the main results to nonsingular Markov shifts.
We prove the existence of calibrated uniformly continuous subactions for coercive potentials with bounded variation defined on topologically transitive Markov shifts with countable alphabet through the construction of the Peierls barrier in this context. Also, we characterize the existence of bounded calibrated subactions in the same context.
We introduce a definition of pressure for almost-additive sequences of continuous functions defined over (non-compact) countable Markov shifts. The variational principle is proved. Under certain assumptions we prove the existence of Gibbs and equilibrium measures. Applications are given to the study of maximal Lypaunov exponents of product of matrices.
For a given finite directed graph $G$, there are two types of Markov-Dyck shifts, the Markov-Dyck shift $D_G^V$ of vertex type and the Markov-Dyck shift $D_G^E$ of edge type. It is shown that, if $G$ does not have multi-edges, the former is a finite-to-one factor of the latter, and they have the same topological entropy. An expression for the zeta function of a Markov-Dyck shift of vertex type is given. It is different from that of the Markov-Dyck shift of edge type.
The purpose of this article is twofold. On one hand, we reveal the equivalence of shift of finite type between a one-sided shift $X$ and its associated hom tree-shift $\mathcal{T}_{X}$, as well as the equivalence in the sofic shift. On the other hand, we investigate the interrelationship among the comparable mixing properties on tree-shifts as those on multidimensional shift spaces. They include irreducibility, topologically mixing, block gluing, and strong irreducibility, all of which are defined in the spirit of classical multidimensional shift, complete prefix code (CPC), and uniform CPC. I…
