We study the automorphism group of an infinite minimal shift $(X,σ)$ such that the complexity difference function, $p(n+1)-p(n)$, is bounded. We give some new bounds on $\mbox{Aut}(X,σ)/\langle σ\rangle$ and also study the one-sided case. For a class of Toeplitz shifts, including the class of shifts defined by constant length primitive substitutions with a coincidence and with height one, we show that the two-sided automorphism group is a cyclic group. We next focus on shifts generated by primitive constant length substitutions. For these shifts, we give an algorithm that computes their two-sided automorphism group, As a corollary we describe how to compute the set of conjugacies between two such shifts.
We study the $C^*$-algebras of the étale groupoids defined by the asymptotic equivalence relations for hyperbolic automorphisms on the two-dimensional torus. The algebras are proved to be four-dimensional non-commutative tori by an explicit numerical computation. The ranges of the unique tracial states of its $K_0$-groups of the $C^*$-algebras are described in terms of the hyperbolic matrices of the automorphisms on the torus.
In this paper we give a number of explicit constructions for II$_1$ factors and II$_1$ equivalence relations that have prescribed fundamental group and outer automorphism group. We construct factors and relations that have uncountable fundamental group different from $\IRpos$. In fact, given any II$_1$ equivalence relation, we construct a II$_1$ factor with the same fundamental group. Given any locally compact unimodular second countable group $G$, our construction gives a II$_1$ equivalence relation $\RelR$ whose outer automorphism group is $G$. The same construction does not give a II$_1$ fa…
For a finite digraph $D$, we define the corresponding subshift of finite type $(X_D, σ_D)$ to be the dynamical system where $X_D$ is the set of all bi-infinite walks through $D$ and $σ_D$ is the shift operator. Two digraphs $D_1$ and $D_2$ are called shift equivalent if there is $m\geq 1$ such that $(X_{D_1}, σ_{D_1}^n)$ and $(X_{D_2}, σ_{D_2}^n)$ are topologically conjugate for all $n\geq m$. They are called strong shift equivalent if this holds for $m=1$. In this paper we introduce a new category which generalises the category of subshifts of finite type and topological conjugacy. Our catego…
We show that a collection of generalized Bowen-Franks group, what we call the principal Bowen-Franks $R$-modules, form a complete set of $R$-module invariants for the equivalence relation of profinite conjugacy for similar hyperbolic toral automorphisms. We also show that these principal generalized Bowen-Franks $R$-modules are the principal invariants in a large class of generalized Bowen-Franks $R$-module invariants for similar hyperbolic automorphisms. We further show how the conjugacy invariant of cyclicity, when applied to hyperbolic toral automorphisms, is realized for profinite conjugac…
Crystallographic tilings of the Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^n$ are defined as simple tilings whose group of isometric automorphisms is crystallographic. To classify crystallographic tilings by their automorphism groups it is necessary to extend the standard equivalence relation of mutual local derivability to a version taking more general isometries than translations into account. This also requires the extension of the standard metrics on tiling spaces. Finally, a tiling with a given crystallographic group as automorphism group is constructed.
This paper is dedicated to the conjugacy problem in $GL(n,\Z)$ and its connection with algebraic number theory. This connection may be summed up in the Latimer-MacDuffee-Taussky Theorem, which, in a very broad sense, identifies the conjugacy relation in $GL(n,\Z)$ with the relation of arithmetic equivalence between certain ideals of algebraic numbers. The main purpouse is to clarify the link between a weaker relation between ideals, weak equivalence, and local conjugacy in $GL(n,\Z)$, i.e., the conjugacy of $GL(n,\Z)$ matrices in the groups $GL(n,\Z_{p})$ of invertible matrices over the $p$-ad…
We study skew products where the base is a hyperbolic automorphism of $\mathbb{T}^2$, the fiber is a smooth area preserving flow on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with one fixed point (of high degeneracy) and the skewing function is a smooth non coboundary with non-zero integral. The fiber dynamics can be represented as a special flow over an irrational rotation and a roof function with one power singularity. We show that for a full measure set of rotations the corresponding skew product is $K$ and not Bernoulli. As a consequence we get a natural class of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^4$ wh…
We classify rational surfaces for which the image of the automorphisms group in the group of linear transformations of the Picard group is the largest possible. This answers a question raised by Arthur Coble in 1928, and can be rephrased in terms of periodic orbits of a birational action of an infinite Coxeter group on ordered point sets in the projective plane modulo projective equivalence. We also outline the classification of non-rational surfaces with large automorphism groups.
We show that for any Polish group $G$ and any countable normal subgroup $Γ\triangleleft G$, the coset equivalence relation $G/Γ$ is a hyperfinite Borel equivalence relation. In particular, the outer automorphism group of any countable group is hyperfinite.
A $λ$-graph bisystem $\mathcal{L}$ consists of two labeled Bratteli diagrams $(\mathcal{L}^-,\mathcal{L}^+)$, that presents a two-sided subshift $Λ_\mathcal{L}$. We will construct a compact totally disconnected metric space with a shift homeomorphism consisting of two-dimensional configurations from a $λ$-graph bisystem. The configuration space has a certain étale AF-equivalence relation written $R_{\mathcal{L}}$ with a natural shift homeomorphism $σ_{\mathcal{L}}$ coming from the shift homeomorphism $σ_{Λ_{\mathcal{L}}}$ on the subshift $Λ_{\mathcal{L}}$. The equivalence relation $R_{\mathcal…
We show how the fine structure in shift-tail equivalence, appearing in the noncommutative geometry of Cuntz-Krieger algebras developed by the first two authors, has an analogue in a wide range of other Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. To illustrate this structure, and where it appears, we produce an unbounded representative of the defining extension of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra constructed from a finitely generated projective bi-Hilbertian module, extending work by the third author with Robertson and Sims. As an application, our construction yields new spectral triples for Cuntz- and Cuntz-Krieger alge…
