Ott, Tomforde, and Willis proposed a useful compactification for one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets. Building from their idea we develop a notion of two-sided shift spaces over infinite alphabets, with an eye towards generalizing a result of Kitchens. As with the one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets our shift spaces are compact Hausdorff spaces but, in contrast to the one-sided setting, our shift map is continuous everywhere. We show that many of the classical results from symbolic dynamics are still true for our two-sided shift spaces. In particular, while for one-sided shifts the problem about whether or not any $M$-step shift is conjugate to an edge shift space is open, for two-sided shifts we can give a positive answer for this question.
We define a notion of (one-sided) shift spaces over infinite alphabets. Unlike many previous approaches to shift spaces over countable alphabets, our shift spaces are compact Hausdorff spaces. We examine shift morphisms between these shift spaces, and identify three distinct classes that generalize the shifts of finite type. We show that when our shift spaces satisfy a property that we call "row-finite", then shift morphisms on them may be identified with sliding block codes. As applications, we show that if two (possibly infinite) directed graphs have edge shifts that are conjugate, then the …
Recently Ott, Tomforde and Willis introduced a notion of one-sided shifts over infinite alphabets and proposed a definition for sliding block codes between such shift spaces. In this work we propose a more general definition for sliding block codes between Ott-Tomforde-Willis shift spaces and then we prove Curtis-Hedlund-Lyndon type theorems for them, finding sufficient and necessary conditions under which the class of the sliding block codes coincides with the class of continuous shift-commuting maps.
In this paper we further develop the theory of one sided shift spaces over infinite alphabets, characterizing one-step shifts as edge shifts of ultragraphs and partially answering a conjecture regarding shifts of finite type (we show that there exists shifts of finite type that are not conjugate, via a conjugacy that is eventually finite periodic, to an edge shift of a graph ). We also show that there exists edge shifts of ultragraphs that are shifts of finite type, but are not conjugate to a full shift, a result that is not true for edge shifts of graphs. One of the key results needed in the …
We define a notion of (one-sided) edge shift spaces associated to ultragraphs. In the finite case our notion coincides with the edge shift space of a graph. In general, we show that our space is metrizable and has a countable basis of clopen sets. We show that for a large class of ultragraphs the basis elements of the topology are compact. We examine shift morphisms between these shift spaces, and, for the locally compact case, show that if two (possibly infinite) ultragraphs have edge shifts that are conjugate, via a conjugacy that preserves length, then the associated ultragraph C*-algebras …
In this paper, we introduce topological entropy for dynamical systems generated by a single local homeomorphism (Deaconu-Renault systems). More precisely, we generalize Adler, Konheim, and McAndrew's definition of entropy via covers and Bowen's definition of entropy via separated sets. We propose a definition of factor map between Deaconu-Renault systems and show that entropy (via separated sets) always decreases under uniformly continuous factor maps. Since the variational principle does not hold in the full generality of our setting, we show that the proposed entropy via covers is a lower bo…
We study in this work different $(0, 1)$-codings of points from the unit interval $[0, 1]$ in the relation with the treatment of continuous unimodal maps.
The class of normal subshifts includes irreducible infinite topological Markov shifts, irreducible infinite sofic shifts, synchronized systems, Dyck shifts, $β$-shifts, substitution minimal shifts, and so on. We will characterize one-sided topological conjugacy classes of normal subshifts in terms of the associated $C^*$-algebras and its gauge actions with potentials.
We study the action of groups generated by bounded activity automata with infinite alphabets on their orbital Schreier graphs. We introduce an amenability criterion for such groups based on the recurrence of the first level action. This criterion is a natural extension of the result that all groups generated by bounded activity automata with finite alphabets are amenable. Our motivation comes from the investigation of iterated monodromy groups of entire functions.
We consider substitutions on compact alphabets and provide sufficient conditions for the diffraction to be pure point, absolutely continuous and singular continuous. This allows one to construct examples for which the Koopman operator on the associated function space has specific spectral components. For abelian bijective substitutions, we provide a dichotomy result regarding the spectral type of the diffraction. We also provide the first example of a substitution that has countably infinite Lebesgue spectral components and countably infinite singular continuous components. Lastly, we give a n…
We prove a complex Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius theorem for Markov shifts over an infinite alphabet, whence extending results by M. Pollicott from the finite to the infinite alphabet setting. As an application we obtain an extension of renewal theory in symbolic dynamics, as developed by S. P. Lalley and in the sequel generalised by the second author, now covering the infinite alphabet case.
In this work, we consider a class of substitutions on infinite alphabets and show that they exhibit a growth behaviour which is impossible for substitutions on finite alphabets. While for both settings the leading term of the tile counting function is exponential (and guided by the inflation factor), the behaviour of the second-order term is strikingly different. For the finite setting, it is known that the second term is also exponential or exponential times a polynomial. We exhibit a large family of examples where the second term is at least exponential in $n$ divided by half-integer powers …
An infinite sequence $α$ over an alphabet $Σ$ is $μ$-distributed w.r.t. a probability map $μ$ if, for every finite string $w$, the limiting frequency of $w$ in $α$ exists and equals $μ(w)$. %We raise the question of how to characterize the probability maps $μ$ for which $μ$-distributedness is preserved across finite-state selection, or equivalently, by selection by programs using constant space. We prove the following result for any finite or countably infinite alphabet $Σ$: every finite-state selector over $Σ$ selects a $μ$-distributed sequence from every $μ$-distributed sequence \emph{if and…
We will introduce a notion of normal subshifts. A subshift $(Λ,σ)$ is said to be normal if it satisfies a certain synchronizing property called $λ$-synchronizing and is infinite as a set. We have lots of purely infinite simple $C^*$-algebras from normal subshifts including irreducible infinite sofic shifts, Dyck shifts, $β$-shifts, and so on. Eventual conjugacy of one-sided normal subshifts and topological conjugacy of two-sided normal subshifts are characterized in terms of the associated $C^*$-algebras and the associated stabilized $C^*$-algebras with its diagonals and gauge actions, respect…
In this work we characterize shift spaces over infinite countable alphabets that can be endowed with an inverse semigroup operation. We give sufficient conditions under which zero-dimensional inverse semigroups can be recoded as shift spaces whose correspondent inverse semigroup operation is a 1-block operation, that is, it arises from a group operation on the alphabet. Motivated by this, we go on to study block operations on shift spaces and, in the end, we prove our main theorem, which states that Markovian shift spaces, which can be endowed with a 1-block inverse semigroup operation, are co…
We consider left shift transform S on the space $X=Σ^{\mathbb Z}$ of two-sided sequences over a compact alphabet $Σ$. We give an important and sufficient condition on $x \in X$ which guarantees the restriction of S onto orbit closure of x to be a Toeplitz flow.
Path sets are spaces of one-sided infinite symbol sequences corresponding to the one-sided infinite walks beginning at a fixed initial vertex in a directed labeled graph. Path sets are a generalization of one-sided sofic shifts. This paper studies decimation operations $ψ_{j, n}(\cdot)$ which extract symbol sequences in infinite arithmetic progressions (mod n). starting with the symbol at position j. It also studies a family of n-ary interleaving operations, one for each arity n, which act on an ordered set $(X_0, X_1, ..., X_{n-1})$ of one-sided symbol sequences on a finite alphabet A, to pro…
This paper introduces a class of polynomial maps in Euclidean spaces, investigates the conditions under which there exist Smale horseshoes and uniformly hyperbolic invariant sets, studies the chaotic dynamical behavior and strange attractors, and shows that some maps are chaotic in the sense of Li-Yorke or Devaney. This type of maps includes both the Logistic map and the Hénon map. For some maps in three-dimensional spaces under certain conditions, if the expansion dimension is equal to one or two, it is shown that there exist a Smale horseshoe and a uniformly hyperbolic invariant set on which…
The complexity function of an infinite word $w$ on a finite alphabet $A$ is the sequence counting, for each non-negative $n$, the number of words of length $n$ on the alphabet $A$ that are factors of the infinite word $w$. The goal of this work is to estimate the number of words of length $n$ on the alphabet $A$ that are factors of an infinite word $w$ with a complexity function bounded by a given function $f$ with exponential growth and to describe the combinatorial structure of such sets of infinite words. We introduce a real parameter, the {\it word entropy} $E_W(f)$ associated to a given f…
In this paper we show that, for topological dynamical systems with a dense set (in the weak topology) of periodic measures, a typical (in Baire's sense) invariant measure has, for each $q>0$, zero lower $q$-generalized fractal dimension. This implies, in particular, that a typical invariant measure has zero upper Hausdorff dimension and zero lower rate of recurrence. Of special interest is the full-shift system $(X,T)$ (where $X= M^{\Z}$ is endowed with a sub-exponential metric and the alphabet $M$ is a perfect and compact metric space), for which we show that a typical invariant measure has, …
We show that the automorphism group of a one-dimensional full shift (the group of reversible cellular automata) does not satisfy the Tits alternative. That is, we construct a finitely-generated subgroup which is not virtually solvable yet does not contain a free group on two generators. We give constructions both in the two-sided case (spatially acting group $\Z$) and the one-sided case (spatially acting monoid $\N$, alphabet size at least eight). Lack of Tits alternative follows for several groups of symbolic (dynamical) origin: automorphism groups of two-sided one-dimensional uncountable sof…
We explore the topological full group [[G]] of an essentially principal etale groupoid G on a Cantor set. When G is minimal, we show that [[G]] (and its certain normal subgroup) is a complete invariant for the isomorphism class of the etale groupoid G. Furthermore, when G is either almost finite or purely infinite, the commutator subgroup D([[G]]) is shown to be simple. The etale groupoid G arising from a one-sided irreducible shift of finite type is a typical example of a purely infinite minimal groupoid. For such G, [[G]] is thought of as a generalization of the Higman-Thompson group. We pro…
The complexity function of an infinite word $w$ on a finite alphabet $A$ is the sequence counting, for each non-negative $n$, the number of words of length $n$ on the alphabet $A$ that are factors of the infinite word $w$. For any given function $f$ with exponential growth, we introduced in [MM17] the notion of {\it word entropy} $E_W(f)$ associated to $f$ and we described the combinatorial structure of sets of infinite words with a complexity function bounded by $f$. The goal of this work is to give estimates on the word entropy $E_W(f)$ in terms of the limiting lower exponential growth rate …
Let $σ:\boldsymbolΣ\to\boldsymbolΣ$ be the left shift acting on $ \boldsymbolΣ $, a one-sided Markov subshift on a countable alphabet. Our intention is to guarantee the existence of $σ$-invariant Borel probabilities that maximize the integral of a given locally Hölder continuous potential $ A : \boldsymbolΣ \to \mathbb R $. Under certain conditions, we are able to show not only that $A$-maximizing probabilities do exist, but also that they are characterized by the fact their support lies actually in a particular Markov subshift on a finite alphabet. To that end, we make use of objects dual to …
Path sets are spaces of one-sided infinite symbol sequences associated to pointed graphs (G_v_0), which are edge-labeled directed graphs G with a distinguished vertex v_0. Such sets arise naturally as address labels in geometric fractal constructions and in other contexts. The resulting set of symbol sequences need not be closed under the one-sided shift. this paper establishes basic properties of the structure and symbolic dynamics of path sets, and shows they are a strict generalization of one-sided sofic shifts.
We prove some results on the behavior of infinite sums of the form $Σf\circ T^n(x)\frac{1}{n}$, where $T:S^1\to S^1$ is an irrational circle rotation and $f$ is a mean-zero function on $S^1$. In particular, we show that for a certain class of functions $f$, there are Liouville $α$ for which this sum diverges everywhere. We also show that there are Liouville $α$ for which the sum converges everywhere.
We study one-sided Markov shifts, corresponding to positively recurrent Markov chains with countable (finite or infinite) state spaces. The following classification problem is considered: when two one-sided Markov shifts are isomorphic up to a measure preserving isomorphism In this paper we solve the problem for the class of rho-uniform (or finitely rho-Bernoulli) one-sided Markov shifts considered in Ru_6 We show that every ergodic rho-uniform Markov shift T can be represented in a canonical form T = T_G by means of a canonical (uniquely determined by T) stochastic graph G. In the canonical f…
Let $n \ge 3$ be an integer. Let $P_n = \{1, 2, 3, ..., n-1, n \}$ and let $S_n$ be the symmetric group of permutations on $P_n$. Motivated by the theory of discrete dynamical systems on the interval, we associate each permutation $\si_n$ in $S_n$ a (zero-one) Petrie matrix $M_{\si_n,n-1}$ in $GL(n-1,{\mathbb{R}})$ (which is generally not the same as the usual permutation matrix). Then, for any two permutations $\si_n$ and $ρ_n$ in $S_n$, the notions of right, left and two-sided similarities (and weak similarities respectively) of $\si_n$ and $ρ_n$ are introduced using the similarities (and th…
In this note we propose an alternative definition for sliding block codes between shift spaces. This definition coincides with the usual definition in the case that the shift space is defined on a finite alphabet, but it encompass a larger class of maps when the alphabet is infinite. In any case, the proposed definition keeps the idea that a sliding block code is a map with a local rule. Using this new definition we prove that the Curtis-Hedlund-Lyndon Theorem always holds for shift spaces over countable alphabets.
