We introduce a new method to perform reduction of contact manifolds that extends Willett's (math.SG/0104080) and Albert's results. To carry out our reduction procedure all we need is a complete Jacobi map $J$ from a contact manifold $M$ to a Jacobi manifold $Γ_0$. This naturally generates the action of the contact groupoid of $Γ_0$ on $M$, and we show that the quotients of fibers of $J$ by suitable Lie subgroups are either contact or locally conformal symplectic manifolds with structures induced by the one on $M$.
We show that Willett's reduced spaces are prequantizations of our reduced spaces; hence the former are completely determined by the latter. Since a symplectic manifold is prequantizable iff the symplectic form is integral, this explains why Willett's reduction can be performed only at distinguished points. As an application we obtain Kostant's prequantizations of coadjoint orbits.
We introduce the concept of twisted contact groupoids, as an extension either of contact groupoids or of twisted symplectic ones, and we discuss the integration of twisted Jacobi manifolds by twisted contact groupoids. We also investigate the very close relationships which link homogeneous twisted Poisson manifolds with twisted Jacobi manifolds and homogeneous twisted symplectic groupoids with twisted contact ones. Some examples for each structure are presented.
We use symplectic reduction to give a new construction of the core $C$ of a symplectic double groupoid $D$ as the common leaf space of characteristic foliations associated to various coisotropic submanifolds of $D$. In the case of the cotangent double groupoid of a Lie groupoid $G$, the canonical relations arising from this process turn out to be cotangent lifts of structure maps associated to $G$. We also show that under this reduction procedure the double groupoid structure on $D$ descends to a groupoid structure on the leaf space above, recovering the core groupoid structure on $C$ of Brown…
We define gauge transformations of Jacobi structures on a manifold. This is related to gauge transformations of Poisson structures via the Poissonization. Finally, we discuss how the contact structure of a contact groupoid is effected by a gauge transformation of the Jacobi structure on its base.
This is the second part of a series of two papers dedicated to a systematic study of holomorphic Jacobi structures. In the first part, we introduced and study the concept of a holomorphic Jacobi manifold in a very natural way as well as various tools. In the present paper, we solve the integration problem for holomorphic Jacobi manifolds by proving that they integrate to complex contact groupoids. A crucial tool in our proof is what we call the "homogenization scheme", which allows us to identify holomorphic Jacobi manifolds with homogeneous holomorphic Poisson manifolds and holomorphic contac…
Jacobi groupoids are introduced as a generalization of Poisson and contact groupoids and it is proved that generalized Lie bialgebroids are the infinitesimal invariants of Jacobi groupoids. Several examples are discussed.
We study precontact groupoids whose infinitesimal counterparts are Dirac-Jacobi structures. These geometric objects generalize contact groupoids. We also explain the relationship between precontact groupoids and homogeneous presymplectic groupoids. Finally, we present some examples of precontact groupoids.
In this paper we study Poisson actions of complete Poisson groups, without any connectivity assumption or requiring the existence of a momentum map. For any complete Poisson group $G$ with dual $G^\star$ we obtain a suitably connected integrating symplectic double groupoid $\calS$. As a consequence, the cotangent lift of a Poisson action on an integrable Poisson manifold $P$ can be integrated to a Poisson action of the symplectic groupoid $\poidd{\calS}{G^\star}$ on the symplectic groupoid for $P$. Finally, we show that the quotient Poisson manifold $P/G$ is also integrable, giving an explicit…
We discuss a method for constructing multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids or, more exactly, for reducing the task of constructing such connections to a number of in principle simpler tasks involving only Lie groupoids that are both proper and regular.
This paper explains the fundamental relation between Jacobi structures and the classical Spencer operator coming from the theory of PDEs so as to provide a direct and geometric approach to the integrability of Jacobi structures. It uses recent results on the integrability of Spencer operators and multliplicative forms on Lie groupoids with non-trivial coefficients. In Theorem 1 we show that the Spencer operator associated to a contact groupoid reveals that the base manifold carries a Jacobi structure. Theorem 2 deals with the problem of integrating Jacobi structures to contact groupoids.
This paper is concerned with symmetries of closed multiplicative 2-forms on Lie groupoids and their infinitesimal counterparts. We use them to study Lie group actions on Dirac manifolds by Dirac diffeomorphisms and their lifts to presymplectic groupoids, building on recent work of Fernandes-Ortega-Ratiu \cite{FOR} on Poisson actions.
In this paper we study quotients of Lie algebroids and groupoids endowed with compatible differential forms. We identify Lie theoretic conditions under which such forms become basic and characterize the induced forms on the quotients. We apply these results to describe generalized quotient and reduction processes for (twisted) Poisson and Dirac structures, as well as to their integration by (twisted, pre-)symplectic groupoids. In particular, we recover and generalize several known results concerning Poisson reduction.
We introduce the notions of relational groupoids and relational convolution algebras. We provide various examples arising from the group algebra of a group $G$ and a given normal subgroup $H$. We also give conditions for the existence of a Haar system of measures on a relational groupoid compatible with the convolution, and we prove a reduction theorem that recovers the usual convolution of a Lie groupoid.
We discuss the integrability of Jacobi manifolds by contact groupoids, and then look at what the Jacobi point of view brings new into Poisson geometry. In particular, using contact groupoids, we prove a Kostant-type theorem on the prequantization of symplectic groupoids, which answers a question posed by Weinstein and Xu \cite{prequan}. The methods used are those of Crainic-Fernandes on $A$-paths and monodromy group(oid)s of algebroids. In particular, most of the results we obtain are valid also in the non-integrable case.
We construct Hermitian representations of Lie algebroids and associated unitary representations of Lie groupoids by a geometric quantization procedure. For this purpose we introduce a new notion of Hamiltonian Lie algebroid actions. The first step of our procedure consists of the construction of a prequantization line bundle. Next, we discuss a version of Kähler quantization suitable for this setting. We proceed by defining a Marsden-Weinstein quotient for our setting and prove a ``quantization commutes with reduction'' theorem. We explain how our geometric quantization procedure relates to a …
We provide explicit formulas for integrating multiplicative forms on local Lie groupoids in terms of infinitesimal data. Combined with our previous work [8], which constructs the local Lie groupoid of a Lie algebroid, these formulas produce concrete integrations of several geometric stuctures defined infinitesimally. In particular, we obtain local integrations and non-degenerate realizations of Poisson, Nijenhuis-Poisson, Dirac, and Jacobi structures by local symplectic, symplectic-Nijenhuis, presymplectic, and contact groupoids, respectively.
In this paper we prove Gray stability for compact contact groupoids and we use it to prove stability results for deformations of the induced Jacobi bundles.
We solve the integration problem for generalized complex manifolds, obtaining as the natural integrating object a weakly holomorphic symplectic groupoid, which is a real symplectic groupoid with a compatible complex structure defined only on the associated stack, i.e., only up to Morita equivalence. We explain how such objects differentiate to give generalized complex manifolds, and we show that a generalized complex manifold is integrable in this sense if and only if its underlying real Poisson structure is integrable. Crucial to our solution are several new technical tools which are of indep…
We prove a reduction theorem for the tangent bundle of a Poisson manifold $(M, π)$ endowed with a pre-Hamiltonian action of a Poisson Lie group $(G, π_G)$. In the special case of a Hamiltonian action of a Lie group, we are able to compare our reduction to the classical Marsden-Ratiu reduction of $M$. If the manifold $M$ is symplectic and simply connected, the reduced tangent bundle is integrable and its integral symplectic groupoid is the Marsden-Weinstein reduction of the pair groupoid $M \times \bar{M}$.
We complete the reduction of Sasakian manifolds with the non-zero case by showing that Willett's contact reduced space is compatible with the Sasakian structure. We then prove the compatibility of the non-zero Sasakian (in particular, contact) reduction with the reduction of the Kähler (in particular, symplectic) cone. We provide examples obtained by toric actions on Sasakian spheres and make some comments concerning the curvature of the quotients.
We consider a family of tight contact structures on the three-dimensional torus and we compute the relative Contact Homology by using the variational theory of critical points at infinity. We will also show some algebraic equivariant homology reductions.
We extend the theorems concerning the equivariant symplectic reduction of the cotangent bundle to contact geometry. The role of the cotangent bundle is taken by the cosphere bundle. We use Albert's method for reduction at zero and Willett's method for non-zero reduction. We provide examples for both cases.
As a step toward proving an index theorem for hypoelliptic operators Heisenberg manifolds, including those on CR and contact manifolds, we construct an analogue for Heisenberg manifolds of Connes' tangent groupoid of a manifold $M$. As it is well known for a Heisenberg manifold $(M,H)$ the relevant notion of tangent is rather that of Lie group bundle of graded 2-step nilpotent Lie groups $GM$. We then construct the tangent groupoid of $(M,H)$ as a differentiable groupoid $\cG_{H} M$ encoding the smooth deformation of $M\times M$ to $GM$. In this construction a crucial use is made of a refined …
Given a Poisson (or more generally Dirac) manifold $P$, there are two approaches to its geometric quantization: one involves a circle bundle $Q$ over $P$ endowed with a Jacobi (or Jacobi-Dirac) structure; the other one involves a circle bundle with a (pre-) contact groupoid structure over the (pre-) symplectic groupoid of $P$. We study the relation between these two prequantization spaces. We show that the circle bundle over the (pre-) symplectic groupoid of $P$ is obtained from the groupoid of $Q$ via an $S^1$ reduction that preserves both the groupoid and the geometric structure.
The Atiyah-Singer index theorem gives a topological formula for the index of an elliptic differential operator. Enlightening from Alain Connes' tangent groupoid proof of the index theorem and van Erp's research for the Heisenberg index theory on contact manifolds, we give an explicit construction of a series of maps, whose induced map in K-theory is the Heisenberg Atiyah-Singer index map on contact manifolds. Our methods derive from Higson's construction for symbol class in K-theory.
Every action on a Poisson manifold by Poisson diffeomorphisms lifts to a Hamiltonian action on its symplectic groupoid which has a canonically defined momentum map. We study various properties of this momentum map as well as its use in reduction.
We prove some Fredholm conditions for many algebras of differential operators on particular classes of open manifolds, which include asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. Our typical result is that an operator $P$ is Fredholm if, and only if, it is elliptic and some limit operators $(P_α)_{α\in A}$ are invertible. The operators $P_α$ are right-invariant operators on amenable Lie groups $G_α$, and are of the same type of $P$. To obtain this result, we consider algebras of differential operators that are generated by groupoids. We study a general gluing procedure for g…
In this article I propose a new method for reducing a co-oriented contact manifold M equipped with an action of a Lie group G by contact transformations. With a certain regularity and integrality assumption the contact quotient $M_μ$ at $μ\in \fg^*$ is a naturally a co-oriented contact orbifold which is independent of the contact form used to represent the given contact structure. Removing the regularity and integrality assumptions and replacing them with one concerning the existence of a slice, which is satisfied for compact symmetry groups, results in a contact stratified space; i.e, a strat…
We present a reduction procedure for locally conformally symplectic (LCS) manifolds with an action of a Lie group preserving the conformal structure, with respect to any regular value of the momentum mapping. Under certain conditions, this reduction is compatible with the existence of a locally conformally Kähler structure. As a special consequence, we obtain a compatible contact reduction with respect to any regular value of the contact momentum mapping.
Let $G$ be a Lie group, with an invariant non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form on its Lie algebra, let $π$ be the fundamental group of an orientable (real) surface $M$ with a finite number of punctures, and let $\bold C$ be a family of conjugacy classes in $G$, one for each puncture. A finite-dimensional construction used earlier to obtain a symplectic structure on the moduli space of flat $G$-bundles over compact $M$ is extended to the punctured case. It yields a symplectic structure on a certain smooth manifold $\Cal M_{\bold C}$ containing the space $\roman{Hom}(π,G)_{\bold C}$ of homomor…
We consider a generalization of Einstein-Sasaki manifolds, which we characterize in terms both of spinors and differential forms, that in the real analytic case corresponds to contact manifolds whose symplectic cone is Calabi-Yau. We construct solvable examples in seven dimensions. Then, we consider circle actions that preserve the structure, and determine conditions for the contact reduction to carry an induced structure of the same type. We apply this construction to obtain a new hypo-contact structure on S^2\times T^3.
Due to the emergence of symplectic geometry, the geometric treatment of mechanics underwent a great development during the last century. In this scenario the pressence of symmetries in Hamiltonian systems leads naturally to the existence of conserved quantities. This integrals of motions are described by the well-known momentum mapping. Furthermore, the equations of motion can be simplified by a process known as reduction, if the system is invariant under the action of a certain group. This process can also be considered in the framework of contact geometry, a much more recent field of study. …
This paper develops a generalized formulation of Lagrangian mechanics on fibered manifolds, together with a reduction theory for symmetries corresponding to Lie groupoid actions. As special cases, this theory includes not only Lagrangian reduction (including reduction by stages) for Lie group actions, but also classical Routh reduction, which we show is naturally posed in this fibered setting. Along the way, we also develop some new results for Lagrangian mechanics on Lie algebroids, most notably a new, coordinate-free formulation of the equations of motion. Finally, we extend the foregoing to…
The Atiyah-Singer index theorem is a topological formula for the index of an elliptic differential operator. The topological index depends on a cohomology class that is constructed from the principal symbol of the operator. On contact manifolds, the important Fredholm operators are not elliptic, but hypoelliptic. Their symbolic calculus is noncommutative, and involves analysis on the Heisenberg group. For a hypoelliptic differential operator in the Heisenberg calculus on a contact manifold we construct a symbol class in the K-theory of a noncommutative C*-algebra of symbols. There is a canonic…
After observing that the well-known convexity theorems of symplectic geometry also hold for compact contact manifolds with an effective action of a torus whose Reeb vector field corresponds to an element of the Lie algebra of the torus, we use this fact together with a recent symplectic orbifold version of Delzant's theorem due to Lerman and Tolman [LT] to show that every such compact toric contact manifold can be obtained by a contact reduction from an odd dimensional sphere.
A symplectic Hamiltonian system admitting a scaling symmetry can be reduced to an equivalent contact Hamiltonian system in which some physically-irrelevant degree of freedom has been removed. As a consequence, one obtains an equivalent description for the same physical phenomenon, but with fewer inputs needed, thus realizing "Poincaré's dream" of a scale-invariant description of the universe. This work is devoted to a thorough analysis of the mathematical framework behind such reductions. We show that generically such reduction is possible and the reduced (fundamental) system is a contact Hami…
For contact manifolds $(M, η)$ a complexification $M^c$ is constructed to which the contact form $η$ extends such that the exterior derivative of the extended form is Kählerian. In the case of a proper action of an extendable Lie group this construction is realized in an equivariant way. In a simultaneous stratification of $M$ and $M^c$ according to the istropy type, it is shown that the Kählerian reduction of the complexification can be seen as the complexification of the contact reduction.
We study control systems invariant under a Lie group with application to the problem of nonlinear trajectory planning. A theory of symmetry reduction of exterior differential systems is employed to demonstrate how symmetry reduction and reconstruction is effective in the explicit, exact construction of planned system trajectories. We show that, while a given control system with symmetry may not be static feedback linearizable or even flat, it may nevertheless possess a flat or even linearizable symmetry reduction and from this, trajectory planning in the original system may often be carried ou…
We show that the contact reduction can be specialized to Sasakian manifolds. We link this Sasakian reduction to Kähler reduction by considering the Kähler cone over a Sasakian manifold. We present examples of Sasakian manifolds obtained by $S^1$ reduction of standard Sasakian spheres.
In this paper we study the symplectic and Poisson geometry of moduli spaces of flat connections over quilted surfaces. These are surfaces where the structure group varies from region to region in the surface, and where a reduction (or relation) of structure occurs along the boundaries of the regions. Our main theoretical tool is a new form moment-map reduction in the context of Dirac geometry. This reduction framework allows us to use very general relations of structure groups, and to investigate both the symplectic and Poisson geometry of the resulting moduli spaces from a unified perspective…
Generalised contact structures are studied from the point of view of reduced generalised complex structures, naturally incorporating non-coorientable structures as non-trivial fibering. The infinitesimal symmetries are described in detail, with a geometric description given in terms of gerbes. As an application of the reduction procedure, generalised coKähler structures are defined in a way which extends the Kähler/coKähler correspondence.
