As a step toward proving an index theorem for hypoelliptic operators Heisenberg manifolds, including those on CR and contact manifolds, we construct an analogue for Heisenberg manifolds of Connes' tangent groupoid of a manifold $M$. As it is well known for a Heisenberg manifold $(M,H)$ the relevant notion of tangent is rather that of Lie group bundle of graded 2-step nilpotent Lie groups $GM$. We then construct the tangent groupoid of $(M,H)$ as a differentiable groupoid $\cG_{H} M$ encoding the smooth deformation of $M\times M$ to $GM$. In this construction a crucial use is made of a refined notion of privileged coordinates and of a tangent approximation result for Heisenberg diffeomorphisms.
This paper studies the infinitesimal structure of Carnot manifolds. By a Carnot manifold we mean a manifold together with a subbundle filtration of its tangent bundle which is compatible with the Lie bracket of vector fields. We introduce a notion of differential, called Carnot differential, for Carnot manifolds maps (i.e., maps that are compatible with the Carnot manifold structure). This differential is obtained as a group map between the corresponding tangent groups. We prove that, at every point, a Carnot manifold map is osculated in a very precise way by its Carnot differential at the poi…
The purpose of this article is to study Ezra Getzler's approach to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem from the perspective of Alain Connes' tangent groupoid. We shall construct a "rescaled" spinor bundle on the tangent groupoid, define a convolution operation on its smooth, compactly supported sections, and explain how the algebra so-obtained incorporates Getzler's symbol calculus.
We construct an algebra of smooth functions over the tangent groupoid associated to any Lie groupoid. This algebra is a field of algebras over the closed interval [0, 1] which fiber at zero is the algebra of Schwartz functions over the Lie algebroid, whereas any fiber out of zero is the convolution algebra of the initial groupoid. Our motivation comes from index theory for Lie groupoids. In fact, our construction gives an intermediate algebra between the enveloping C-algebra and the convolution algebra of compactly supported functions of the tangent groupoid; and it will allows us, in a furthe…
In 1974, Folland and Stein constructed an inhomogeneous pseudo-differential calculus based on analysis on the Heisenberg group. This Heisenberg calculus was generalized by several authors, to any subbundle of the tangent bundle. van Erp and Yuncken, following Debord and Skandalis showed that this calculus can be recovered using a deformation groupoid alla tangent groupoid of Connes. Using functoriality of the deformation to the normal cone construction, we give an elementary construction of this groupoid. We then extend it to the general case of a filtration of the tangent bundle by an iterate…
We address one of the open problems in quantization theory recently listed by Rieffel. By developping in detail Connes' tangent groupoid principle and using previous work by Landsman, we show how to construct a strict, flabby quantization, which is moreover an asymptotic morphism and satisfies the reality and traciality constraints, on any oriented Riemannian manifold. That construction generalizes the standard Moyal rule. The paper can be considered as an introduction to quantization theory from Connes' point of view.
A VB-groupoid is a Lie groupoid equipped with a compatible linear structure. In this paper, we describe a correspondence, up to isomorphism, between VB-groupoids and 2-term representations up to homotopy of Lie groupoids. Under this correspondence, the tangent bundle of a Lie groupoid G corresponds to the "adjoint representation" of G. The value of this point of view is that the tangent bundle is canonical, whereas the adjoint representation is not. We define a cochain complex that is canonically associated to any VB-groupoid. The cohomology of this complex is isomorphic to the groupoid cohomo…
We give an algebraic/geometric characterization of the classical pseudodifferential operators on a smooth manifold in terms of the tangent groupoid and its natural $\mathbb{R}^\times_+$-action. Specifically, we show that a properly supported semiregular distribution on $M\times M$ is the Schwartz kernel of a classical pseudodifferential operator if and only if it extends to a smooth family of distributions on the range fibres of the tangent groupoid which is homogeneous for the $\mathbb{R}^\times_+$-action modulo smooth functions. Moreover, we show that the basic properties of pseudodifferenti…
A proper etale Lie groupoid is modelled as a (noncommutative) spectral geometric space. The spectral triple is built on the algebra of smooth functions on the groupoid base which are invariant under the groupoid action. Stiefel-Whitney classes in Lie groupoid cohomology are introduced to measure the orientability of the tangent bundle and the obstruction to lift the tangent bundle to a spinor bundle. In the case of an orientable and spin Lie groupoid, an invariant spinor bundle and an invariant Dirac operator will be constructed. This data gives rise to a spectral triple. The algebraic orienta…

In this master's thesis, we will go into the (projective) blow-up construction for Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. In the literature, there are different methods to be found on how to do this, especially for Lie groupoids. The main goal of the thesis is to explain, in detail, the Lie groupoid and the Lie algebroid blow-up constructions, but also to examine and compare different points of view. More explicitly, we will rigorously explain the blow-up construction for Lie groupoids by Claire Debord and Georges Skandalis. Moreover, we will show that the blow-up construction for Lie groupoids by …
We introduce the concept of Roe C*-algebra for a locally compact groupoid whose unit space is in general not compact, and that is equipped with an appropriate coarse structure and Haar system. Using Connes' tangent groupoid method, we introduce an analytic index for an elliptic differential operator on a Lie groupoid equipped with additional metric structure, which takes values in the K-theory of the Roe C*-algebra. We apply our theory to derive a Lichnerowicz type vanishing result for foliations on open manifolds.
We explain that general differential calculus and Lie theory have a common foundation: Lie Calculus is differential calculus, seen from the point of view of Lie theory, by making use of the groupoid concept as link between them. Higher order theory naturally involves higher algebra (n-fold groupoids).(conceptual, topological) differential calculus, groupoids, higher algebra($n$-fold groupoids), Lie group, Lie groupoid, tangent groupoid, cubes of rings
We complete the construction of the double Lie algebroid of a double Lie groupoid begun in the first paper of this title. We show that the Lie algebroid structure of an LA--groupoid may be prolonged to the Lie algebroid of its Lie groupoid structure; in the case of a double groupoid this prolonged structure for either LA--groupoid is canonically isomorphic to the Lie algebroid structure associated with the other; this extends many canonical isomorphisms associated with iterated tangent and cotangent structures. We also show that the cotangent of a double Lie groupoid is a symplectic double gro…
We prove that the horizontal and vertical distributions of the tangent bundle with the Sasaki metric are isocline, the distributions given by the kernels of the horizontal and vertical lifts of the contact form $ω$ from the Heisenberg manifold $(H_3,g)$ to $(TH_3,g^S)$ are not totally geodesic, and the distributions $F^H=L(E_1^H,E_2^H)$ and $F^V=L(E_1^V,E_2^V)$ are totally geodesic, but they are not isocline. We obtain that the horizontal and natural lifts of the curves from the Heisenberg manifold $(H_3,g)$, are geodesics in the tangent bundle endowed with the Sasaki metric $(TH_3,g^s)$, if a…
We prove that the cotangent of a double Lie groupoid S has itself a double groupoid structure with sides the duals of associated Lie algebroids, and double base the dual of the Lie algebroid of the core of S. Using this, we prove a result outlined by Weinstein in 1988, that the side groupoids of a general symplectic double groupoid are Poisson groupoids in duality. Further, we prove that any double Lie groupoid gives rise to a pair of Poisson groupoids (and thus of Lie bialgebroids) in duality. To handle the structures involved effectively we extend to this context the dualities and canonical …
We introduce nonassociative geometric objects generalising naturally Lie groupoids and called (smooth) quasiloopoids and loopoids. We prove that the tangent bundles of smooth loopoids are canonically smooth loopoids again (it is nontrivial in the case of loopoids). We show also that this is not true if the cotangent bundles are concerned. After providing a few natural constructions, we show how the Lie-like functor associates with loopoids skew-algebroids and almost Lie algebroids and how discrete mechanics on Lie groupoids can be reformulated in the nonassociative case.
We define and study multiplicative connections in the tangent bundle of a Lie groupoid. Multiplicative connections are linear connections satisfying an appropriate compatibility with the groupoid structure. Our definition is natural in the sense that a linear connection on a Lie groupoid is multiplicative if and only if its torsion is a multiplicative tensor in the sense of Bursztyn-Drummond [5] and its geodesic spray is a multiplicative vector field. We identify the obstruction to the existence of a multiplicative connection. We also discuss the infinitesimal version of multiplicative connect…
Cartan-Lie algebroids, i.e. Lie algebroids equipped with a compatible connection, permit the definition of an adjoint representation, on the fiber as well as on the tangent of the base. We call (positive) quadratic Lie algebroids, Cartan-Lie algebroids with ad-invariant (Riemannian) metrics on their fibers and base $κ$ and $g$, respectively. We determine the necessary and sufficient conditions for a positive quadratic Lie algebroid to integrate to a Riemmanian Cartan-Lie groupoid. Here we mean a Cartan-Lie groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ equipped with a bi-invariant and inversion invariant metric $η$ o…
A log symplectic manifold is a Poisson manifold which is generically nondegenerate. We develop two methods for constructing the symplectic groupoids of log symplectic manifolds. The first is a blow-up construction, corresponding to the notion of an elementary modification of a Lie algebroid along a subalgebroid. The second is a gluing construction, whereby groupoids defined on the open sets of an appropriate cover may be combined to obtain global integrations. This allows us to classify all Hausdorff symplectic groupoids of log symplectic manifolds in a combinatorial fashion, in terms of a cer…
Using tools from the theory of Lie groupoids, we study the category of logarithmic flat connections on principal $G$-bundles, where $G$ is a complex reductive structure group. Flat connections on the affine line with a logarithmic singularity at the origin are equivalent to representations of a groupoid associated to the exponentiated action of $\mathbb{C}$. We show that such representations admit a canonical Jordan-Chevalley decomposition and use this to give a functorial classification. Flat connections on a complex manifold with logarithmic singularities along a hypersurface are equivalent …
For any Lie groupoid $G$, the vector bundle $g^*$ dual to the associated Lie algebroid $g$ is canonically a Poisson manifold. The (reduced) C*-algebra of $G$ (as defined by A. Connes) is shown to be a strict quantization (in the sense of M. Rieffel) of $g^*$. This is proved using a generalization of Weyl's quantization prescription on flat space. Many other known strict quantizations are a special case of this procedure; on a Riemannian manifold, one recovers Connes' tangent groupoid as well as a recent generalization of Weyl's prescription. When $G$ is the gauge groupoid of a principal bundle…
For any Lie groupoid we construct an analytic index morphism taking values in a modified $K-theory$ group which involves the convolution algebra of compactly supported smooth functions over the groupoid. The construction is performed by using the deformation algebra of smooth functions over the tangent groupoid constructed in \cite{Ca2}. This allows in particular to prove a more primitive version of the Connes-Skandalis Longitudinal index Theorem for foliations, that is, an index theorem taking values in a group which pairs with Cyclic cocycles. As other application, for $D$ a $\gr-$PDO ellipt…
We prove a reduction theorem for the tangent bundle of a Poisson manifold $(M, π)$ endowed with a pre-Hamiltonian action of a Poisson Lie group $(G, π_G)$. In the special case of a Hamiltonian action of a Lie group, we are able to compare our reduction to the classical Marsden-Ratiu reduction of $M$. If the manifold $M$ is symplectic and simply connected, the reduced tangent bundle is integrable and its integral symplectic groupoid is the Marsden-Weinstein reduction of the pair groupoid $M \times \bar{M}$.
Ehresmann's introduction of differentiable groupoids in the 1950s may be seen as a starting point for two diverging lines of research, many-object Lie theory (the study of Lie algebroids and Lie groupoids) and sketch theory. This thesis uses tangent categories to build a bridge between these two lines of research, providing a structural account of Lie algebroids and the Lie functor. To accomplish this, we develop the theory of involution algebroids, which are a tangent-categorical sketch of Lie algebroids. We show that the category of Lie algebroids is precisely the category of involution alge…
We extend the calculus of multiplicative vector fields and differential forms and their intrinsic derivatives from Lie groups to Lie groupoids; this generalization turns out to include also the classical process of complete lifting from arbitrary manifolds to tangent and cotangent bundles. Using this calculus we give a new description of the Lie bialgebroid structure associated with a Poisson groupoid.
Groupoids provide a more appropriate framework for differential geometry than principal bundles. Synthetic differential geometry is the avant-garde branch of differential geometry, in which nilpotent infinitesimals are available in abundance. The principal objective in this paper is to show within our favorite framework of synthetic differential geometry that the tangent space of the group of bisections of a microlinear groupoid at its identity is naturally a Lie algebra. We give essentially distinct two proofs for its Jacobi identity.
This thesis deals with deformations of VB-algebroids and VB-groupoids. They can be considered as vector bundles in the categories of Lie algebroids and groupoids and encompass several classical objects, including Lie algebra and Lie group representations, 2-vector spaces and the tangent and the cotangent algebroid (groupoid) to a Lie algebroid (groupoid). Moreover, they are geometric models for some kind of representations of Lie algebroids (groupoids), namely 2-term representations up to homotopy. Finally, it is well known that Lie groupoids are "concrete" incarnations of differentiable stack…
We begin with a short presentation of the basic concepts related to Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, but the main part of this paper deals with Lie algebroids. A Lie algebroid over a manifold is a vector bundle over that manifold whose properties are very similar to those of a tangent bundle. Its dual bundle has properties very similar to those of a cotangent bundle: in the graded algebra of sections of its external powers, one can define an operator similar to the exterior derivative. We present the theory of Lie derivatives, Schouten-Nijenhuis brackets and exterior derivatives in the genera…
We define a new differential geometric structure, called Lie rackoid. It relates to Leibniz algebroids exactly as Lie groupoids relate to Lie algebroids. Its main ingredient is a selfdistributive product on the manifold of bisections of a smooth precategory. We show that the tangent algebroid of a Lie rackoid is a Leibniz algebroid and that Lie groupoids gives rise via conjugation to a Lie rackoid. Our main objective are large classes of examples, including a Lie rackoid integrating the Dorfman bracket without the cocycle term of the standard Courant algebroid.
We construct connections and characteristic forms for principal bundles over groupoids and stacks in the differentiable, holomorphic and algebraic category using Atiyah sequences associated to transversal tangential distributions.
A complex Lie algebroid is a complex vector bundle over a smooth (real) manifold M with a bracket on sections and an anchor to the complexified tangent bundle of M which satisfy the usual Lie algebroid axioms. A proposal is made here to integrate analytic complex Lie algebroids by using analytic continuation to a complexification of M and integration to a holomorphic groupoid. A collection of diverse examples reveal that the holomorphic stacks presented by these groupoids tend to coincide with known objects associated to structures in complex geometry. This suggests that the object integrating…
We construct and study general connections on Lie groupoids and differentiable stacks as well as on principal bundles over them using Atiyah sequences associated to transversal tangential distributions.
Involutivity is a well known necessary condition for integrability of smooth tangent distributions. We show that this condition is still necessary for integrability with Sobolev surfaces. We specialize our study to the left invariant horizontal distribution of the first Heisenberg group $\H^1$. Here we answer a question raised in a paper by Z.M.Balogh, R.Hoefer-Isenegger, J.T.Tyson.
The Atiyah-Singer index theorem gives a topological formula for the index of an elliptic differential operator. Enlightening from Alain Connes' tangent groupoid proof of the index theorem and van Erp's research for the Heisenberg index theory on contact manifolds, we give an explicit construction of a series of maps, whose induced map in K-theory is the Heisenberg Atiyah-Singer index map on contact manifolds. Our methods derive from Higson's construction for symbol class in K-theory.
A Nijenhuis operator on a manifold $M$ is a $(1,1)$ tensor $\mathcal N$ whose Nijenhuis-torsion vanishes. A Nijenhuis operator $\mathcal N$ on $M$ determines a Lie algebroid structure $(TM)_{\mathcal N}$ on the tangent bundle $TM$. In this sense a Nijenhuis operator can be seen as an infinitesimal object. In this paper, we identify its "global counterpart". Namely, we show that when the Lie algebroid $(TM)_{\mathcal N}$ is integrable, then it integrates to a Lie groupoid equipped with appropriate additional structure responsible for $\mathcal N$, and viceversa, the Lie algebroid of a Lie group…
We study a transformation of metric measure spaces introduced by Gigli and Mantegazza consisting in replacing the original distance with the length distance induced by the transport distance between heat kernel measures. We study the smoothing effect of this procedure in two important examples. Firstly, we show that in the case of some Euclidean cones, a singularity persists at the apex. Secondly, we generalize the construction to a sub-Riemannian manifold, namely the Heisenberg group, and show that it regularizes the space instantaneously to a smooth Riemannian manifold.
A contact manifold is a manifold equipped with a distribution of codimension one that satisfies a `maximal non-integrability' condition. A standard example of a contact structure is a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold, and operators of analytic interest are the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator and the Szego projector onto its kernel. The Heisenberg calculus is the natural pseudodifferential calculus developed originally for the analysis of these operators. We introduce a `non-integrability' condition for a distribution of arbitrary codimension that directly generalizes the definition of a co…
Reductions of higher tangent bundles of Lie groupoids provide natural examples of geometric structures which we would like to call higher algebroids. Such objects can be also constructed abstractly starting from an arbitrary almost Lie algebroid. A higher algebroid is, in principle, a graded bundle equipped with a differential relation of special kind (a Zakrzewski morphism). In the paper we investigate basic properties of higher algebroids and show some applications. Namely, we develop a geometric framework for variational calculus on higher algebroids (including both forces and momenta). Suc…
We define an abstract notion of double Lie algebroid, which includes as particular cases: (1) the double Lie algebroid of a double Lie groupoid in the sense of the author, such as the iterated tangent bundle of an ordinary manifold, and various iterated tangent/cotangent constructions in symplectic and Poisson geometry; (2) the double of a Lie bialgebra; (3) the double of a matched pair, or twilled extension, of Lie algebras, and a corresponding construction for matched pairs of general Lie algebroids in the sense of Mokri and of J.-H. Lu. We prove that, given any abstract Lie bialgebroid, the…
We construct algebraic and algebro-geometric models for the spaces of unparametrized paths. This is done by considering a path as a holonomy functional on indeterminate connections. For a manifold X, we construct a Lie algebroid P which serves as the tangent space to X (punctual paths) inside the space of all unparametrized paths. It serves as a natural receptacle of all "covariant derivatives of the curvature" for all bundles with connections on X. If X is an algebraic variety, we integrate P to a formal groupoid G which can be seen as the formal neighborhood of X inside the space of paths. W…
This paper first introduces the notion of a Rota-Baxter operator (of weight $1$) on a Lie group so that its differentiation gives a Rota-Baxter operator on the corresponding Lie algebra. Direct products of Lie groups, including the decompositions of Iwasawa and Langlands, carry natural Rota-Baxter operators. Formal inverse of the Rota-Baxter operator on a Lie group is precisely the crossed homomorphism on the Lie group, whose tangent map is the differential operator of weight $1$ on a Lie algebra. A factorization theorem of Rota-Baxter Lie groups is proved, deriving directly on the Lie group l…
