A Nijenhuis operator on a manifold $M$ is a $(1,1)$ tensor $\mathcal N$ whose Nijenhuis-torsion vanishes. A Nijenhuis operator $\mathcal N$ on $M$ determines a Lie algebroid structure $(TM)_{\mathcal N}$ on the tangent bundle $TM$. In this sense a Nijenhuis operator can be seen as an infinitesimal object. In this paper, we identify its "global counterpart". Namely, we show that when the Lie algebroid $(TM)_{\mathcal N}$ is integrable, then it integrates to a Lie groupoid equipped with appropriate additional structure responsible for $\mathcal N$, and viceversa, the Lie algebroid of a Lie groupoid equipped with such additional structure is of the type $(TM)_{\mathcal N}$ for some Nijenhuis operator $\mathcal N$. We illustrate our integration result in various examples.
We study and completely describe pairs of compatible Poisson structures near singular points of the recursion operator satisfying natural non-degeneracy condition.
In this paper, we introduce right-invariant (similarly, left-invariant) Poisson-Nijenhuis Structures on Lie groupoids and their infinitesimal counterparts as called $(Λ, \mathbf{n})-$structures. We present a mutual correspondence between $(Λ,\mathbf{n})-$structures on Lie algebroids with Poisson-Nijenhuis structures $(Π, \mathbf{N})$ on their Lie groupoids under some conditions. Also, we will construct Poisson-Nijenhuis pair groupoids as an example from the invariance's point of view.
In this paper, for a Jacobi algebroid $A$, by introducing the notion of Jacobi quasi-Nijenhuis algebroids, which is a generalization of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifolds introduced by Stiénon and Xu, we study generalized complex structures on the Courant-Jacobi algebroid $A\oplus A^*$, which unifies generalized complex (contact) structures on an even(odd)-dimensional manifold.
We explore variational Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on nonlinear PDEs and establish relations between Schouten and Nijenhuis brackets on the initial equation with the Lie bracket of symmetries on its natural extensions (coverings). This approach allows to construct a framework for the theory of nonlocal structures.
We extend the characterization of the integrability of an almost complex structure $J$ on differentiable manifolds via the vanishing of the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket $[J, J] ^{FN}$ to an analogous characterization of torsion-free $G_2$-structures and torsion-free Spin(7)-structures. We also explain the Fernández-Gray classification of $G_2$-structures and the Fernández classification of Spin(7)-structures in terms of the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket.
The modular vector field of a Poisson-Nijenhuis Lie algebroid $A$ is defined and we prove that, in case of non-degeneracy, this vector field defines a hierarchy of bi-Hamiltonian $A$-vector fields. This hierarchy covers an integrable hierarchy on the base manifold, which may not have a Poisson-Nijenhuis structure.
Equipping the tangent bundle TQ of a manifold with a symplectic form coming from a regular Lagrangian L, we explore how to obtain a Poisson-Nijenhuis structure from a given type (1,1) tensor field J on Q. It is argued that the complete lift of J is not the natural candidate for a Nijenhuis tensor on TQ, but plays a crucial role in the construction of a different tensor R, which appears to be the pullback under the Legendre transform of the lift of J to co-tangent manifold of Q. We show how this tangent bundle view brings new insights and is capable also of producing all important results which…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of Koszul-Vinberg-Nijenhuis structures on a left-symmetric algebroid as analogues of Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on a Lie algebroid, and show that a Koszul-Vinberg-Nijenhuis structure gives rise to a hierarchy of Koszul-Vinberg structures. We introduce the notions of ${\rm KVΩ}$-structures, pseudo-Hessian-Nijenhuis structures and complementary symmetric $2$-tensors for Koszul-Vinberg structures on left-symmetric algebroids, which are analogues of ${\rm PΩ}$-structures, symplectic-Nijenhuis structures and complementary $2$-forms for Poisson structures. We…
We generalize Poisson-Nijenhuis structures. We prove that on a manifold endowed with a Nijenhuis tensor and a Jacobi structure which are compatible, there is a hierarchy of pairwise compatible Jacobi structures. Furthermore, we study the homogeneous Poisson-Nijenhuis structures and their relations with Jacobi structures.
We study a class of Poisson-Nijenhuis systems defined on compact hermitian symmetric spaces, where the Nijenhuis tensor is defined as the composition of Kirillov-Konstant-Souriau symplectic form with the so called Bruhat-Poisson structure. We determine its spectrum. In the case of Grassmannians the eigenvalues are the Gelfand-Tsetlin variables. We introduce the abelian algebra of collective hamiltonians defined by a chain of nested subalgebras and prove complete integrability. By construction, these models are integrable with respect to both Poisson structures. The eigenvalues of the Nijenhuis…
We define the Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures with background on Lie algebroids and we prove that to any generalized complex structure on a Courant algebroid which is the double of a Lie algebroid is associated such a structure. We prove that any Lie algebroid with a Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structure with background constitutes, with its dual, a quasi-Lie bialgebroid. We also prove that any pair $(π,ω)$ of a Poisson bivector and a 2-form induces a Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structure with background and we observe that particular cases correspond to already known compatibilities between $π$ an…
Contractions of Leibniz algebras and Courant algebroids by means of (1,1)-tensors are introduced and studied. An appropriate version of Nijenhuis tensors leads to natural deformations of Dirac structures and Lie bialgebroids. One recovers presymplectic-Nijenhuis structures, Poisson-Nijenhuis structures, and triangular Lie bialgebroids as particular examples.
The theory of generalized Nijenhuis torsions, which extends the classical notions due to Nijenhuis and Haantjes, offers new tools for the study of normal forms of operator fields. We propose a general result ensuring that, given a family of commuting operator fields whose generalized Nijenhuis torsion of level $l$ vanishes, there exists a local chart where all operators can be simultaneously block-diagonalized. We also introduce the notion of generalized Haantjes algebra, consisting of operators with a vanishing higher-level torsion, as a new algebraic structure naturally generalizing standard…
We define multiplicative Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on a Lie groupoid which extends the notion of symplectic-Nijenhuis groupoid introduced by Stié23non and Xu. We also introduce a special class of Lie bialgebroid structure on a Lie algebroid $A$, called P-N Lie bialgebroid, which defines a hierarchy of compatible Lie bialgebroid structures on $A$. We show that under some topological assumption on the groupoid, there is a one-to-one correspondence between multiplicative Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on a Lie groupoid and P-N Lie bialgebroid structures on the corresponding Lie algebroid.
We investigate Nijenhuis deformations of $L_\infty$-algebras, a notion that unifies several Nijenhuis deformations, namely those of Lie algebras, Lie algebroids, Poisson structures and Courant structures. Additional examples, linked to Lie $n$-algebras and $n$-plectic manifolds, are included.
Introducing Nijenhuis forms on Lie-infinity algebras gives a general frame to understand deformations of the latter. We give here a Nijenhuis interpretation of a deformation of an arbitrary Lie algebroid into a Lie-infinity algebra. Then we show that Nijenhuis forms on Lie-infinity algebras also give a short and efficient manner to understand Poisson-Nijenhuis structures and, more generally, the so-called exact Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures with background.
Recently S. Merkulov established a new link between differential geometry and homological algebra by giving descriptions of several differential geometric structures in terms of algebraic operads and props. In particular he described Nijenhuis structures as corresponding to representations of the cobar construction on the Koszul dual of a certain quadratic operad. In this paper we prove, using the PBW-basis method of E. Hoffbeck, that the operad governing Nijenhuis structures is Koszul, thereby showing that Nijenhuis structures correspond to representations of the minimal resolution of this op…
We extend the Falceto-Zambon version of Marsden-Ratiu Poisson reduction to Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures with background on manifolds. We define gauge transformations of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures with background, study some of their properties and show that they are compatible with reduction procedure. We use gauge transformations to construct Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures with background.
A Kaehler-Nijenhuis manifold is a Kaehler manifold M, with metric g, complex structure J and Kaehler form F, endowed with a Nijenhuis tensor field A that is compatible with the Poisson stucture defined by F in the sense of the theory of Poisson-Nijenhuis structures. If this happens, and if either AJ=JA or AJ=-JA, M is foliated by im A into non degenerate Kaehler-Nijenhuis submanifolds. If A is a non degenerate (1,1)-tensor field on M, (M,g,J,A) is a Kaehler-Nijenhuis manifold iff one of the following two properties holds: 1) A is associated with a symplectic structure of M that defines a Poiss…
In this paper, we develop the theory of Hom-Lie algebroids, Hom-Lie bialgebroids and Hom-Courant algebroids introduced by Cai, Liu and Sheng. Specifically, we introduce the notions of Hom-Poisson, Hom-Nijenhuis and Hom-Poisson-Nijenhuis structures on a Hom-Lie algebroid and the notion of Hom-Dirac structures on a Hom-Courant algebroid. We show that these structures satisfy similar properties to structures non "Hom-"version. For example, there exists the hierarchy of a Hom-Poisson-Nijenhuis structure and we have a relation between Hom-Dirac structures and Maurer-Cartan type equation. Moreover w…
We introduce the notion of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifolds generalizing the Poisson-Nijenhuis manifolds of Magri-Morosi. We also investigate the integration problem of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifolds. In particular, we prove that, under some topological assumption, Poisson (quasi)-Nijenhuis manifolds are in one-one correspondence with symplectic (quasi)-Nijenhuis groupoids. As an application, we study generalized complex structures in terms of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis manifolds. We prove that a generalized complex manifold corresponds to a special class of Poisson quasi-Nijenhuis structures…
An associated Nijenhuis tensor of endomorphisms in the tangent bundle is introduced. Special attention is paid to such tensors for an almost hypercomplex structure and the metric of Hermitian-Norden type. There are studied relations between the six associated Nijenhuis tensors as well as their vanishing. It is given a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of these tensors as a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion tensor. Similar idea is used in the paper of T. Friedrich and S. Ivanov in Asian J. Math. (2002) for som…

We consider the problem of the symplectic realization of a Poisson-Nijenhuis manifold. By applying a new technique developed by M. Crainic and I. Marcut for the study of the above problem in the case of a Poisson manifold, we establish the existence, under a condition, of a nondegenerate Poisson-Nijenhuis structure on an open neighborhood of the zero-section of the cotangent bundle of the manifold, which symplectizes the initial structure. Additionally, we present some examples.
We show that well known structures on Lie algebroids can be viewed as Nijenhuis tensors or pairs of compatible tensors on Courant algebroids. We study compatibility and construct hierarchies of these structures.
A field of endomorphisms $R$ is called a Nijenhuis operator if its Nijenhuis torsion vanishes. In this work we study a specific kind of singular points of $R$ called points of scalar type. We show that the tangent space at such points possesses a natural structure of a left-symmetric algebra (also known as pre-Lie or Vinberg-Kozul algebras). Following Weinstein's approach to linearization of Poisson structures, we state the linearisation problem for Nijenhuis operators and give an answer in terms of non-degenerate left-symmetric algebras. In particular, in dimension 2, we give classification o…
The aim of this paper is two-fold. First, a survey of the theory of Kronecker webs and their relations with bihamiltonian structures and PDEs is presented. Second, a partial solution to the problem of bisymplectic realization of a bihamiltonian structure is given. Both the goals are achieved by means of the notion of a partial Nijenhuis operator, which is studied in detail.
We give several explicit examples of compact manifolds with a $1$-parameter family of almost complex structures having arbitrarily small Nijenhuis tensor in the $C^0$-norm. The $4$-dimensional examples possess no complex structure, whereas the $6$-dimensional example does not possesses a left invariant complex structure, and whether it possesses a complex structure appears to be unknown.
Normal forms of almost complex structures in a neighborhood of pseudoholomorphic curve are considered. We define normal bundles of such curves and study the properties of linear bundle almost complex structures. We describe 1-jet of the almost complex structure along a curve in terms of its Nijenhuis tensor. For pseudoholomorphic tori we investigate the problem of pseudoholomorphic foliation of the neighborhood. We obtain some results on nonexistence of the tori deformation.
Generalizations in many directions of the contraction procedure for Lie algebras introduced by E.J.Saletan are proposed. Products of arbitrary nature, not necessarily Lie brackets, are considered on sections of finite-dimensional vector bundles. Saletan contractions of such infinite-dimensional algebras are obtained via a generalization of the Nijenhuis tensor approach. In particular, this procedure is applied to Lie algebras, Lie algebroids, and Poisson structures. There are also results on contractions of n-ary products and coproducts.
For an almost complex structure $J$ in dimension 6 with nondegenerate Nijenhuis tensor $N_J$, the automorphism group $G=Aut(J)$ of maximal dimension is the exceptional Lie group $G_2$. In this paper we establish that the sub-maximal dimension of automorphism groups of almost complex structures with nondegenerate $N_J$, i.e. the largest realizable dimension that is less than 14, is $\dim G=10$. Next we prove that only 3 spaces realize this, and all of them are strictly nearly (pseudo-) Kähler and globally homogeneous. Moreover, we show that all examples with $\dim Aut(J)=9$ have semi-simple iso…
In the first chapter, we give a precise and general description of gerbes valued in arbitrary crossed module and over an arbitrary differential stack. We do it using only Lie groupoids, hence ordinary differential geometry, by considering differential stacks as being Lie groupoids up to Morita equivalence. We prove the coincidence with the existing notions by comparing our construction with non-Abelian cohomology. More precisely, we introduce the key notion of extension of Lie groupoids valued in a crossed-module. We relate it with Dedecker's non-Abelian 1-cocycles, and we then show that Morit…
We study Nijenhuis structures on Courant algebroids in terms of the canonical Poisson bracket on their symplectic realizations. We prove that the Nijenhuis torsion of a skew-symmetric endomorphism N of a Courant algebroid is skew-symmetric if the square of N is proportional to the identity, and only in this case when the Courant algebroid is irreducible. We derive a necessary and sufficient condition for a skew-symmetric endomorphism to give rise to a deformed Courant structure. In the case of the double of a Lie bialgebroid (A,A*), given an endomorphism n of A that defines a skew-symmetric en…
Newly introduced generalized Poisson structures based on suitable skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order are discussed in terms of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. The associated `Jacobi identities' are expressed as conditions on these tensors, the cohomological contents of which is given. In particular, we determine the linear generalized Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple Lie algebras.
We connect two a priori unrelated topics, theory of geodesically equivalent metrics in differential geometry, and theory of compatible infinite dimensional Poisson brackets of hydrodynamic type in mathematical physics. Namely, we prove that a pair of geodesically equivalent metrics such that one is flat produces a pair of such brackets. We construct Casimirs for these brackets and the corresponding commuting flows. There are two ways to produce a large family of compatible Poisson structures from a pair of geodesically equivalent metrics one of which is flat. One of these families is $(n+1)(n+…
The super or Z_2-graded Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket is introduced. Using it, new generalized super-Poisson structures are found which are given in terms of certain graded-skew-symmetric contravariant tensors Λof even order. The corresponding super `Jacobi identities' are expressed by stating that these tensors have zero super Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket with themselves [Λ,Λ]=0. As a particular case, we provide the linear generalized super-Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple superalgebras with a non-degenerate Killing metric. The su(3,1) superalgebra is given …
We find a minimal differential graded (dg) operad whose generic representations in $R^n$ are in one-to-one correspondence with formal germs of those endomorphisms of the tangent bundle to $R^n$ which satisfy the Nijenhuis integrability condition. This operad is of a surprisingly simple origin -- it is the cobar construction on the quadratic operad of homologically trivial dg Lie algebras. As a by product we obtain a strong homotopy generalization of this geometric structure and show its homotopy equivalence to the structure of contractible dg manifold.
We extend to the context of Courant algebroids several hierarchies that can be constructed on Poisson-Nijenhuis manifolds. More precisely, we introduce several notions (Poisson-Nijenhuis, deformation-Nijenhuis and Nijenhuis pairs) that extend to Courant algebroids the notion of a Poisson-Nijenhuis manifold, by using the idea that both the Poisson and the Nijenhuis structures, although they seem to be different in nature when considered on manifolds, are just $(1,1)$-tensors on the usual Courant algebroid $TM \oplus T^*M $ satisfying several constraints. For each of the generalizations mentione…
In this paper we present some approaches to classification of almost complex structures and to construction of local or formal pseudoholomorphic mapping from one almost complex manifold to another. The corresponding criteria are given in terms of Nijenhuis tensors and their generalizations. We deal with the prolongations of the Cauchy-Riemann equation in 1-jets of the mapping from one almost complex manifold to another. We give a criterion of the prolongation existence of k-th pseudoholomorphic jets to the (k+1)-th ones. As a consequence basing on the Kuranishi's approach we obtain formal norm…
By studying the Frölicher-Nijenhuis decomposition of cohomology operators (that is, derivations $D$ of the exterior algebra $Ω(M)$ with $\mathbb{Z}-$degree $1$ and $D^2=0$), we describe new examples of Lie algebroid structures on the tangent bundle $TM$ (and its complexification $T^{\mathbb{C}}M$) constructed from pre-existing geometric ones such as foliations, complex, product or tangent structures. We also describe a class of Lie algebroids on tangent bundles associated to idempotent endomorphisms with nontrivial Nijenhuis torsion.
We provide explicit formulas for integrating multiplicative forms on local Lie groupoids in terms of infinitesimal data. Combined with our previous work [8], which constructs the local Lie groupoid of a Lie algebroid, these formulas produce concrete integrations of several geometric stuctures defined infinitesimally. In particular, we obtain local integrations and non-degenerate realizations of Poisson, Nijenhuis-Poisson, Dirac, and Jacobi structures by local symplectic, symplectic-Nijenhuis, presymplectic, and contact groupoids, respectively.
Let $(M,I)$ be an almost complex 6-manifold. The obstruction to integrability of almost complex structure (so-called Nijenhuis tensor) maps a 3-dimensional bundle to a 3-dimensional one. We say that Nijenhuis tensor is non-degenerate if it is an isomorphism. An almost complex manifold is called nearly Kaehler if it admits a Hermitian form $ω$ such that $\nabla(ω)$ is totally antisymmetric, $\nabla$ being the Levi-Civita connection. We show that a nearly Kaehler metric on a given almost complex 6-manifold with non-degenerate Nijenhuis tensor is unique (up to a constant). We interpret the nearly…
One (actually, almost the only effective) way to prove formality of a differentiable manifold is to be able to produce a suitable derivation $δ$ such that $dδ$-lemma holds. We first show that such derivation $δ$ generates a (1,1)-tensor field (we denote it by $R$). Then, we show that the supercommutation of $d$ and $δ$ (which is a natural, essentially necessary condition to get a $dδ$-lemma) is equivalent to vanishing of the Nijenhujis torsion of $R$. Then, we are looking for sufficient conditions that ensure the $dδ$-lemma holds: we consider the cases when $R$ is self adjoint with respect to …
We study almost Hermitian structures admitting a Hermitian connexion with totally skew-symmetric torsion or equivalently, those almost Hermitian structures with totally skew-symmetric Nijenhuis tensor. We investigate up to what extent the Nijenhuis tensor fails to be parallel with respect to the characteristic connexion. This is naturally described by means of an extension of the notion of Killing form to almost Hermitian geometry. In this context, we also make an essentially self-contained survey of nearly-Kaehler geometry, but from the perspective of non-integrable holonomy systems.
