We introduce a proximal subdifferential and develop a calculus for nonsmooth functions defined on any Riemannian manifold $M$. We give several applications of this theory, concerning: 1) differentiability and geometrical properties of the distance function to a closed subset $C$ of $M$; 2) solvability and implicit function theorems for nonsmooth functions on $M$; 3) conditions on the existence of a circumcenter for three different points of $M$; and especially 4) fixed point theorems for expansive and nonexpansive mappings and certain perturbations of such mappings defined on $M$.
This article provides a pedagogically oriented introduction to geometric (Clifford) calculus on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. Unlike usual approaches to the topic, which rely on embedding the geometric algebra either within a tensor algebra or within a vector manifold framework, here we define geometric calculus directly, by elementary methods. In particular we use an axiomatic approach that directly parallels textbook introductions to general relativity and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, so that no structure outside the metrical Clifford bundle of the manifold need be introduced. On this basis we…
In this paper, the notion of strongly typed language will be borrowed from the field of computer programming to introduce a calculational framework for linear algebra and tensor calculus for the purpose of detecting errors resulting from inherent misuse of objects and for finding natural formulations of various objects. A tensor bundle formalism, crucially relying on the notion of pullback bundle, will be used to create a rich type system with which to distinguish objects. The type system and relevant notation is designed to "telescope" to accomodate a level of detail appropriate to a set of c…
We derive sub-Riemannian Ricci curvature tensor for sub-Riemannian manifolds. We provide examples including the Heisenberg group, displacement group, and Martinet sub-Riemannian structure with arbitrary weighted volumes, in which we establish analytical bounds for sub-Riemannian curvature dimension bounds and log-Sobolev inequalities. {These bounds can be used to establish the entropy dissipation results for sub-Riemannian drift diffusion processes on a compact spatial domain, in term of $L_1$ distance.} Our derivation of Ricci curvature is based on generalized Gamma $z$ calculus and $z$--Boch…

In this paper we give a construction of Fedosov quantization incorporating the odd variables and an analogous formula to Getzler's pseudodifferential calculus composition formula is obtained. A Fedosov type connection is constructed on the bundle of Weyl tensor Clifford algebras over the cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold. The quantum algebra associated with this connection is used to define a deformation of the exterior algebra of Riemannian manifolds.
We formulate the Riemannian calculus of the probability set embedded with $L^2$-Wasserstein metric. This is an initial work of transport information geometry. Our investigation starts with the probability simplex (probability manifold) supported on vertices of a finite graph. The main idea is to embed the probability manifold as a submanifold of the positive measure space with a nonlinear metric tensor. Here the nonlinearity comes from the linear weighted Laplacian operator. By this viewpoint, we establish torsion-free Christoffel symbols, Levi-Civita connections, curvature tensors and volume …
A characterization of the proximal normal cone is obtained and a separation theorem for convex subsets of Riemannian manifolds is established. Moreover, the convexity of the distance function $d_S$ for a convex subset $S$ in the cases where the boundary of $S$ contains a geodesic segment, the boundary of $S$ is $C^2$ or the boundary of $S$ is not regular is discussed. Furthermore, a nonsmooth version of positive semi-definiteness of Hessian of convex functions on Riemannian manifolds is established.
We obtain a characterization of the proximal normal cone to a prox-regular subset of a Riemannian manifold. Moreover, some properties of Bouligand tangent cones to prox-regular sets are described. We prove that for a prox-regular subset S of a Riemannian manifold, the metric projection P_S to S is locally Lipschitz on an open neighborhood of S and it is directionally differentiable at boundary points of S. Finally, a necessary condition for a curve to be a minimizing curve in a prox-regular set is derived.
In this paper we give a new proof of the (strong) displacement convexity of a class of integral functionals defined on a compact Riemannian manifold satisfying a lower Ricci curvature bound. Our approach does not rely on existence and regularity results for optimal transport maps on Riemannian manifolds, but it is based on the Eulerian point of view recently introduced by Otto-Westdickenberg and on the metric characterization of the gradient flows generated by the functionals in the Wasserstein space.
We establish some perturbed minimization principles, and we develop a theory of subdifferential calculus, for functions defined on Riemannian manifolds. Then we apply these results to show existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations defined on Riemannian manifolds.
Let $M$ be a complete connected Riemannian manifold. Assuming that the Riemannian measure is doubling, we define Hardy spaces $H^p$ of differential forms on $M$ and give various characterizations of them, including an atomic decomposition. As a consequence, we derive the $H^p$-boundedness for Riesz transforms on $M$, generalizing previously known results. Further applications, in particular to $H^{\infty}$ functional calculus and Hodge decomposition, are given.
In this paper we study a large deviation principle of Freidlin-Wentzell type for pinned hypoelliptic diffusion measures associated with a natural sub-Laplacian on a compact sub-Riemannian manifold. To prove this large deviation principle, we use rough path theory and manifold-valued Malliavin calculus.
We show that any generalised smooth distribution on a smooth manifold, possibly of non-constant rank, admits a Riemannian metric. Using such a metric, we attach a Laplace operator to any smooth distribution as such. When the underlying manifold is compact, we show that it is essentially self-adjoint. Viewing this Laplacian in the longitudinal pseudodifferential calculus of the smallest singular foliation which includes the distribution, we prove hypoellipticity.
The paper studies the harmonic maps on a direction between a Riemannian space and a generalized Lagrange space. Also, it is proved there that the solutions of C^2 class of certain ODEs or PDEs are harmonic maps, in the sense of this paper.
We prove $R$-bisectoriality and boundedness of the $H^\infty$-functional calculus in $L^p$ for all $1<p<\infty$ for the Hodge-Dirac operator associated with Witten Laplacians on complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Bakry-Emery Ricci curvature on $k$-forms.
In this paper, we extend the DC Calculus introduced by Perelman on finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded below. Among other things, our results allow us to define the Hessian and the Laplacian of DC functions (including distance functions as a particular instance) as a measure-valued tensor and a Radon measure respectively. We show that these objects share various properties with their analogues on smooth Riemannian manifolds.
We develop a complete local theory for CR embedded submanifolds of CR manifolds in a way which parallels the Ricci calculus for Riemannian submanifold theory. In particular, we establish the subtle relationship between the submanifold and ambient standard tractor bundles, allowing us to relate the respective normal Cartan (or tractor) connections via a CR Gauss formula. The CR invariant tractor calculus of CR embeddings is developed concretely in terms of the Tanaka-Webster calculus of an arbitrary (suitably adapted) ambient contact form. This enables straightforward and explicit calculation o…
In these notes we study the Dirichlet problem for critical points of a convex functional of the form \[ F(u)=\int_Ωϕ\left( \left\vert \nabla u\right\vert \right) , \] where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of a complete Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{M}.$ We also study the asymptotic Dirichlet problem when $Ω=\mathcal{M}$ is a Cartan-Hadamard manifold. Our aim is to present a unified approach to this problem which comprises the classical examples of the $p-$Laplacian ($ϕ(s)=s^{p}$, $p>1)$ and the minimal surface equation ($ϕ(s)=\sqrt{1+s^{2}}$). Our approach does not use the direct method of the Calculu…
We present an extension of the classical theory of calculus of variations to generalized functions. The framework is the category of generalized smooth functions, which includes Schwartz distributions while sharing many nonlinear properties with ordinary smooth functions. We prove full connections between extremals and Euler-Lagrange equations, classical necessary and sufficient conditions to have a minimizer, the necessary Legendre condition, Jacobi's theorem on conjugate points and Noether's theorem. We close with an application to low regularity Riemannian geometry.
We use the symbol calculus for foliations developed in our previous paper to derive a cohomological formula for the Connes-Chern character of the semi-finite spectral triple. The same proof works for the Type I spectral triple of Connes-Moscovici. The cohomology classes of the two Connes-Chern characters induce the same map on the image of the maximal Baum-Connes map in K-theory, thereby proving an Atiyah $L^2$ covering index theorem.
We study a "div-grad type" sub-Laplacian with respect to a smooth measure and its associated heat semigroup on a compact equiregular sub-Riemannian manifold. We prove a short time asymptotic expansion of the heat trace up to any order. Our main result holds true for any smooth measure on the manifold, but it has a spectral geometric meaning when Popp's measure is considered. Our proof is probabilistic. In particular, we use S. Watanabe's distributional Malliavin calculus.
We introduce novel equations, in the spirit of rough path theory, that parametrize level sets of intrinsically regular maps on the Heisenberg group with values in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These equations can be seen as a sub-Riemannian counterpart to classical ODEs arising from the implicit function theorem. We show that they enjoy all the natural well-posedness properties, thus allowing for a "good calculus" on nonsmooth level sets. We apply these results to prove an area formula for the intrinsic measure of level sets, along with the corresponding coarea formula.
The authors compute distances between arbitrary elements of Lie groups SU(2) and SO(3) for special left-invariant sub-Riemannian metrics $ρ$ and $d$. To compute distances for the second metric, we essentially use the fact that canonical two-sheeted covering epimorphism $Ω$ of the Lie group SU(2) onto the Lie group SO(3) is submetry and local isometry with respect to metrics $ρ$ and $d$. Proofs are based on previously known formulas for geodesics with origin at the unit, F. Klein's formula for $Ω$, trigonometric functions and relations between them, usual Calculus for functions of one real vari…
We study the local geometry of the space of horizontal curves with endpoints freely varying in two given submanifolds $\mathcal P$ and $\mathcal Q$ of a manifold $\mathcal M$ endowed with a distribution $\mathcal D\subset T\M$. We give a different proof, that holds in a more general context, of a result by Bismut (Large Deviations and the Malliavin Calculus, Birkhauser, 1984) stating that the normal extremizers that are not abnormal are critical points of the sub-Riemannian action functional. We use the Lagrangian multipliers method in a Hilbert manifold setting, which leads to a characterizat…
This paper is the first of two papers constructing a calculus of pseudodifferential operators suitable for doing analysis on Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces and Riemannian manifolds generalizing these. This generalization is the interior of a manifold with boundary, where the boundary has the structure of a tower of fibre bundles. The class of operators we consider on such a space includes those arising naturally from metrics which degenerate to various orders at the boundary, in directions given by the tower of fibrations. As well as Q-rank 1 locally symmetric spaces, examples include Ricci…
In this paper, we study the relation between geodesic and harmonic mappings. Harmonic mappings are defined between Riemannian manifolds as critical points of the energy functional, on the other hand, geodesic mappings are defined in a more general setting (manifolds with affine connections). Using the well-established formalism of calculus of variations on fibred manifolds we solve the weak inverse problem for the equation of geodesic mappings and get a variational equation which is a consequence of the geodesic mappings equation. For the connection on the target manifold we get the expected r…
We study the differential geometric consequences of our previous result on the existence of fat triangulations, in conjunction with a result of Cheeger, Müller and Schrader, regarding the convergence of Lipschitz-Killing curvatures of piecewise-flat approximations of smooth Riemannian manifolds. A further application to the existence of quasiconformal mappings between manifolds, as well as an extension of the triangulation result to the case of almost Riemannian manifolds, are also given. In addition, the notion of fatness of triangulations and its relation to metric curvature and to excess is…
Conformal geodesics are distinguished curves on a conformal manifold, loosely analogous to geodesics of Riemannian geometry. One definition of them is as solutions to a third order differential equation determined by the conformal structure. There is an alternative description via the tractor calculus. In this article we give a third description using ideas from holography. A conformal $n$-manifold $X$ can be seen (formally at least) as the asymptotic boundary of a Poincaré--Einstein $(n+1)$-manifold $M$. We show that any curve $γ$ in $X$ has a uniquely determined extension to a surface $Σ_γ$ …
