In this paper we give a new proof of the (strong) displacement convexity of a class of integral functionals defined on a compact Riemannian manifold satisfying a lower Ricci curvature bound. Our approach does not rely on existence and regularity results for optimal transport maps on Riemannian manifolds, but it is based on the Eulerian point of view recently introduced by Otto-Westdickenberg and on the metric characterization of the gradient flows generated by the functionals in the Wasserstein space.
It is well known that nonlinear diffusion equations can be interpreted as a gradient flow in the space of probability measures equipped with the Euclidean Wasserstein distance. Under suitable convexity conditions on the nonlinearity, due to R. J. McCann, the associated entropy is geodesically convex, which implies a contraction type property between all solutions with respect to this distance. In this note, we give a simple straightforward proof of the equivalence between this contraction type property and this convexity condition, without even resorting to the entropy and the gradient flow st…

We investigate the Moreau-Yosida regularization and the associated proximal map in the context of discrete gradient flow for the 2-Wasserstein metric. Our main results are a stepwise contraction property for the proximal map and an "above the tangent line" inequality for the regularization. Using the latter, we prove a Talagrand inequality and an HWI inequality for the regularization, under appropriate hypotheses. In the final section, the results are applied to study the discrete gradient flow for Rényi entropies. As Otto showed, the gradient flow for these entropies in the 2-Wasserstein metr…
A recurring obstacle in the study of Wasserstein gradient flow is the lack of convexity of the square Wasserstein metric. In this paper, we develop a class of transport metrics that have better convexity properties and use these metrics to prove an Euler-Lagrange equation characterizing Wasserstein discrete gradient flow. We then apply these results to give a new proof of the exponential formula for the Wasserstein metric, mirroring Crandall and Liggett's proof of the corresponding Banach space result. We conclude by using our approach to give simple proofs of properties of the gradient flow, …
This paper connects nonpositive sectional curvature of a Riemannian manifold with the displacement convexity of the variance functional on the space $P(M)$ of probability measures over $M$. We show that $M$ has nonpositive sectional curvature and has trivial topology (i.e, is homeomorphic to $\mathbf{R}^n$) if and only if the variance functional on $P(M)$ is displacement convex. This is followed by a Jensen type inequality for the variance functional with respect to Wasserstein barycenters, as well as by a result comparing the variance of the Wasserstein and linear barycenters of a probability…
A relaxed notion of displacement convexity is defined and used to establish short time existence and uniqueness of Wasserstein gradient flows for higher order energy functionals. As an application, local and global well-posedness of different higher order non-linear evolution equations are derived. Examples include the thin-film equation and the quantum drift diffusion equation in one spatial variable.
We introduce a class of generalized relative entropies (inspired by the Bregman divergence in information theory) on the Wasserstein space over a weighted Riemannian or Finsler manifold. We prove that the convexity of all the entropies in this class is equivalent to the combination of the nonnegative weighted Ricci curvature and the convexity of another weight function used in the definition of the generalized relative entropies. This convexity condition corresponds to Lott and Villani's version of the curvature-dimension condition. As applications, we obtain appropriate variants of the Talagr…
We consider the geometry of the space of Borel measures endowed with a distance that is defined by generalizing the dynamical formulation of the Wasserstein distance to concave, nonlinear mobilities. We investigate the energy landscape of internal, potential, and interaction energies. For the internal energy, we give an explicit sufficient condition for geodesic convexity which generalizes the condition of McCann. We take an eulerian approach that does not require global information on the geodesics. As by-product, we obtain existence, stability, and contraction results for the semigroup obtai…
We study contractivity properties of gradient flows for functions on normed spaces or, more generally, on Finsler manifolds. Contractivity of the flows turns out to be equivalent to a new notion of convexity for the functions. This is different from the usual convexity along geodesics in non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds. As an application, we show that the heat flow on Minkowski normed spaces other than inner product spaces is not contractive with respect to the quadratic Wasserstein distance.
We introduce Wasserstein-like dynamical transport distances between vector-valued densities on the real line. The mobility function from the scalar theory is replaced by a mobility matrix, that is subject to positivity and concavity conditions. Our primary motivation is to cast certain systems of nonlinear parabolic evolution equations into the variational framework of gradient flows. In the first part of the paper, we investigate the structural properties of the new class of distances like geodesic completeness. The second part is devoted to the identification of $λ$-geodesically convex funct…
The paper considers the Euler system of PDE on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of positive curvature without boundary, and the sphere ${\mathbb{S}}^2$ in particular. The paper interprets the Euler equations as a transport problem for the fluid density under dynamics governed by the gradient of the internal energy of the fluid. The paper develops the notion of transport cost in the tangent bundle, and compares its properties with the Wasserstein transportation cost on the manifold. There are applications to the discrete approximation to the Euler equations in the style of Gangbo and Wesdic…
We develop a gradient-flow theory for time-dependent functionals defined in abstract metric spaces. Global well-posedness and asymptotic behavior of solutions are provided. Conditions on functionals and metric spaces allow to consider the Wasserstein space $\mathscr{P}_{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ and apply the results for a large class of PDEs with time- dependent coefficients like confinement and interaction potentials and diffusion. Our results can be seen as an extension of those in Ambrosio-Gigli-Savaré (2005)[2] to the case of time-dependent functionals. For that matter, we need to consider some…
