We introduce a simplified (coarse) version of pseudo-differential calculus for operators of order zero on complete Riemannian manifolds. This calculus works for the usual Hormander (1,0) class of operators, as well as for pseudo-differential operators on filtered manifolds. In fact, we develop the coarse PDO calculus on a more general class of manifolds which we call manifolds with a tangent Lie structure. We prove an index theorem for `h-elliptic' operators where the index is not just an integer, but an element of the K-homology group of the manifold.
In 1974, Folland and Stein constructed an inhomogeneous pseudo-differential calculus based on analysis on the Heisenberg group. This Heisenberg calculus was generalized by several authors, to any subbundle of the tangent bundle. van Erp and Yuncken, following Debord and Skandalis showed that this calculus can be recovered using a deformation groupoid alla tangent groupoid of Connes. Using functoriality of the deformation to the normal cone construction, we give an elementary construction of this groupoid. We then extend it to the general case of a filtration of the tangent bundle by an iterate…
The metric jets, introduced in the first chapter, generalize the jets (at order one) of Charles Ehresmann. In short, for a "good" map $f$ (said to be "tangentiable" at $a$), we define its metric jet tangent at $a$ (composed of all the maps which are locally lipschitzian at $a$ and tangent to $f$ at $a$) called the "tangential" of $f$ at $a$, and denoted T$f_a$ (the domain and codomain of $f$ being metric spaces). Furthermore, guided by the heuristic example of the metric jet T$f_a$, tangent to a map $f$ differentiable at $a$, which can be canonically represented by the unique continuous affine…
The calculus of variations for lagrangians which are not functions on the tangent bundle, but sections certain affine bundles is developed. We follow a general approach to variational principles which admits boundary terms of variations.
Reductions of higher tangent bundles of Lie groupoids provide natural examples of geometric structures which we would like to call higher algebroids. Such objects can be also constructed abstractly starting from an arbitrary almost Lie algebroid. A higher algebroid is, in principle, a graded bundle equipped with a differential relation of special kind (a Zakrzewski morphism). In the paper we investigate basic properties of higher algebroids and show some applications. Namely, we develop a geometric framework for variational calculus on higher algebroids (including both forces and momenta). Suc…
We explain that general differential calculus and Lie theory have a common foundation: Lie Calculus is differential calculus, seen from the point of view of Lie theory, by making use of the groupoid concept as link between them. Higher order theory naturally involves higher algebra (n-fold groupoids).(conceptual, topological) differential calculus, groupoids, higher algebra($n$-fold groupoids), Lie group, Lie groupoid, tangent groupoid, cubes of rings
A contact manifold is a manifold equipped with a distribution of codimension one that satisfies a `maximal non-integrability' condition. A standard example of a contact structure is a strictly pseudoconvex CR manifold, and operators of analytic interest are the tangential Cauchy-Riemann operator and the Szego projector onto its kernel. The Heisenberg calculus is the natural pseudodifferential calculus developed originally for the analysis of these operators. We introduce a `non-integrability' condition for a distribution of arbitrary codimension that directly generalizes the definition of a co…
A Lie algebroid over a manifold is a vector bundle over that manifold whose properties are very similar to those of a tangent bundle. Its dual bundle has properties very similar to those of a cotangent bundle: in the graded algebra of sections of its external powers, one can define an operator similar to the exterior derivative. We present in this paper the theory of Lie derivatives, Schouten-Nijenhuis brackets and exterior derivatives in the general setting of a Lie algebroid, its dual bundle and their exterior powers. All the results (which, for their most part, are already known) are given …
Applying concepts and tools from classical tangent bundle geometry and using the apparatus of the calculus along the tangent bundle projection ('pull-back formalism'), first we enrich the known lists of the characterizations of affine vector fields on a spray manifold and conformal vector fields on a Finsler manifold. Second, we deduce consequences on vector fields on the underlying manifold of a Finsler structure having one or two of the mentioned geometric properties.
We explore the geometry that underlies the osculating nilpotent group structures of the Heisenberg calculus. For a smooth manifold $M$ with a distribution $H\subseteq TM$ analysts use explicit (and rather complicated) coordinate formulas to define the nilpotent groups that are central to the calculus. Our aim in this paper is to provide insight in the intrinsic geometry that underlies these coordinate formulas. First, we introduce `parabolic arrows' as a generalization of tangent vectors. The definition of parabolic arrows involves a mix of first and second order derivatives. Parabolic arrows …
We extend the calculus of multiplicative vector fields and differential forms and their intrinsic derivatives from Lie groups to Lie groupoids; this generalization turns out to include also the classical process of complete lifting from arbitrary manifolds to tangent and cotangent bundles. Using this calculus we give a new description of the Lie bialgebroid structure associated with a Poisson groupoid.
Let $X$ be a compact manifold with boundary. Suppose that the boundary is fibred, $ϕ:\pa X\longrightarrow Y,$ and let $x\in\CI(X)$ be a boundary defining function. This data fixes the space of `fibred cusp' vector fields, consisting of those vector fields $V$ on $X$ satisfying $Vx=O(x^2)$ and which are tangent to the fibres of $ϕ;$ it is a Lie algebra and $\CI(X)$ module. This Lie algebra is quantized to the `small calculus' of pseudodifferential operators $\PsiF*(X).$ Mapping properties including boundedness, regularity, Fredholm condition and symbolic maps are discussed for this calculus. Th…
Based on \cite{DH94}, we introduce a bijective correspondence between first order differential calculi and the graph structure of the symmetric lattice that allows one to encode completely the interconnection structure of the graph in the exterior derivative. As a result, we obtain the Grassmannian character of the lattice as well as the mutual commutativity between basic vector-fields on the tangent space. This in turn gives several similarities between the Clifford setting and the algebra of endomorphisms endowed by the graph structure, such as the hermitian structure of the lattice as well …
We begin with a short presentation of the basic concepts related to Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, but the main part of this paper deals with Lie algebroids. We present the theory of Lie derivatives, Schouten-Nijenhuis brackets and exterior derivatives in the genera…
We give an algebraic/geometric characterization of the classical pseudodifferential operators on a smooth manifold in terms of the tangent groupoid and its natural $\mathbb{R}^\times_+$-action. Specifically, we show that a properly supported semiregular distribution on $M\times M$ is the Schwartz kernel of a classical pseudodifferential operator if and only if it extends to a smooth family of distributions on the range fibres of the tangent groupoid which is homogeneous for the $\mathbb{R}^\times_+$-action modulo smooth functions. Moreover, we show that the basic properties of pseudodifferenti…
We solve $\square_b$ on a class of non-compact 3-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex CR manifolds via a certain conformal equivalence. The idea is to make use of a related $\square_b$ operator on a compact 3-dimensional strongly pseudoconvex CR manifold, which we solve using a pseudodifferential calculus. The way we solve $\square_b$ works whenever $\overline{\partial}_b$ on the compact CR manifold has closed range in $L^2$; in particular, as in Beals and Greiner, it does not require the CR manifold to be the boundary of a strongly pseudoconvex domain in $\mathbb{C}^2$. Our result provides in tu…
We introduce a class of diffeological spaces, called elastic, on which the left Kan extension of the tangent functor of smooth manifolds defines an abstract tangent functor in the sense of Rosicky. On elastic spaces there is a natural Cartan calculus, consisting of vector fields and differential forms, together with the Lie bracket, de Rham differential, inner derivative, and Lie derivative, satisfying the usual graded commutation relations. Elastic spaces are closed under arbitrary coproducts, finite products, and retracts. Examples include manifolds with corners and cusps, diffeological grou…
The Atiyah-Singer index theorem is a topological formula for the index of an elliptic differential operator. The topological index depends on a cohomology class that is constructed from the principal symbol of the operator. On contact manifolds, the important Fredholm operators are not elliptic, but hypoelliptic. Their symbolic calculus is noncommutative, and involves analysis on the Heisenberg group. For a hypoelliptic differential operator in the Heisenberg calculus on a contact manifold we construct a symbol class in the K-theory of a noncommutative C*-algebra of symbols. There is a canonic…
The aim of this work is to lay the foundations of differential geometry and Lie theory over the general class of topological base fields and -rings for which a differential calculus has been developed in recent work (collaboration with H. Gloeckner and K.-H. Neeb), without any restriction on the dimension or on the characteristic. Two basic features distinguish our approach from the classical real (finite or infinite dimensional) theory, namely the interpretation of tangent- and jet functors as functors of scalar extensions and the introduction of multilinear bundles and multilinear connection…
We introduce the concept of Roe C*-algebra for a locally compact groupoid whose unit space is in general not compact, and that is equipped with an appropriate coarse structure and Haar system. Using Connes' tangent groupoid method, we introduce an analytic index for an elliptic differential operator on a Lie groupoid equipped with additional metric structure, which takes values in the K-theory of the Roe C*-algebra. We apply our theory to derive a Lichnerowicz type vanishing result for foliations on open manifolds.
Using recently introduced Debord-Skandalis Blup's groupoids we study index theory for a compact foliated manifold with boundary inducing a foliation in its boundary. For this we consider first a blup groupoid whose Lie algebroid has sections consisting of vector fields tangent to the leaves in the interior and tangent to the leaves of the foliation in the boundary. In particular the holonomy $b$-groupoid allows us to consider the appropriate pseudodifferential calculus and the appropriate index problems. We further use the blup groupoids as the one above, and in particular its functoriality pr…
We propose a general procedure to construct noncommutative deformations of an embedded submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ determined by a set of smooth equations $f^a(x)=0$. We use the framework of Drinfel'd twist deformation of differential geometry of [Aschieri et al., Class. Quantum Gravity 23 (2006), 1883]; the commutative pointwise product is replaced by a (generally noncommutative) $\star$-product determined by a Drinfel'd twist. The twists we employ are based on the Lie algebra $Ξ_t$ of vector fields that are tangent to all the submanifolds that are level sets of the $f^a$; the twisted C…
