Let M be a differentiable manifold endowed with a foliation F. A Poisson structure P on M is F-coupling if the image of the annihilator of TF by the sharp-morphism defined by P is a normal bundle of the foliation F. This notion extends Sternberg's coupling symplectic form of a particle in a Yang-Mills field. In the present paper we extend Vorobiev's theory of coupling Poisson structures from fiber bundles to foliations and give simpler proofs of Vorobiev's existence and equivalence theorems of coupling Poisson structures on duals of kernels of transitive Lie algebroids over symplectic manifolds. Then we discuss the extension of the coupling condition to Jacobi structures on foliated manifolds.
We prove that for regular Poisson manifolds, the zeroth homology group is isomorphic to the top foliated cohomology group and we give some applications. In particular, we show that for regular unimodular Poisson manifolds top Poisson and foliated cohomology groups are isomorphic. Inspired by the symplectic setting, we define what is a perfect Poisson manifold. We use these Poisson homology computations to provide families of perfect Poisson manifolds.
We study the behavior of the modular class of an orientable Poisson manifold and formulate some unimodularity criteria in the semilocal context, around a (singular) symplectic leaf. Our results generalize some known unimodularity criteria for regular Poisson manifolds related to the notion of the Reeb class. In particular, we show that the unimodularity of the transverse Poisson structure of the leaf is a necessary condition for the semilocal unimodular property. Our main tool is an explicit formula for a bigraded decomposition of modular vector fields of a coupling Poisson structure on a foli…
We discuss hamiltonian structures of the Gelfand-Dorfman complex of projectable vector fields and differential forms on a foliated manifold. Such a structure defines a Poisson structure on the algebra of foliated functions, and embeds the given foliation into a larger, generalized foliation with presymplectic leaves. In a so-called tame case, the structure is induced by a Poisson structure of the manifold. Cohomology spaces and classes relevant to geometric quantization are also considered.
We describe Dirac structures on surfaces and 3-manifolds. Every Dirac structure on a surface $M$ is described either by a regular 1-foliation or by a section of a circle bundle obtained as a fiberwise compactification of the line bundle $\wedge^2TM$. Every Dirac structure on a 3-manifold $M$ is either the union of a presymplectic manifold and a foliated Poisson manifold, or the union of a Poisson manifold and a foliated presymplectic manifold.
We study the characteristic foliation of a twisted Jacobi manifold. We show that a twisted Jacobi manifold is foliated into leaves that are, according to the parity of the dimension, endowed with a twisted contact or a twisted locally conformal symplectic structure.
A regular Poisson manifold can be described as a foliated space carrying a tangentially symplectic form. Examples of foliations are produced here that are not induced by any Poisson structure although all the basic obstructions vanish.
If $A$ is a Lie algebroid over a foliated manifold $(M,\mathcal{F})$, a foliation of $A$ is a Lie subalgebroid $B$ with anchor image $T\mathcal{F}$ and such that $A/B$ is locally equivalent with Lie algebroids over the slice manifolds of $\mathcal{F}$. We give several examples and, for foliated Lie algebroids, we discuss the following subjects: the dual Poisson structure and Vaintrob's super-vector field, cohomology and deformations of the foliation, integration to a Lie groupoid. In the last section, we define a corresponding notion of a foliation of a Courant algebroid $A$ as a bracket-close…
On a foliated manifold equipped with an action of a compact Lie group $G$, we study a class of almost-coupling Poisson and Dirac structures, in the context of deformation theory and the method of averaging.
We generalize Poisson-Nijenhuis structures. We prove that on a manifold endowed with a Nijenhuis tensor and a Jacobi structure which are compatible, there is a hierarchy of pairwise compatible Jacobi structures. Furthermore, we study the homogeneous Poisson-Nijenhuis structures and their relations with Jacobi structures.
Motivated by the study of symplectic Lie algebroids, we study a describe a type of algebroid (called an $E$-tangent bundle) which is particularly well-suited to study of singular differential forms and their cohomology. This setting generalizes the study of $b$-symplectic manifolds, foliated manifolds, and a wide class of Poisson manifolds. We generalize Moser's theorem to this setting, and use it to construct symplectomorphisms between singular symplectic forms. We give applications of this machinery (including the study of Poisson cohomology), and study specific examples of a few of them in …
We investigate the geometric, algebraic and homologic structures related with Poisson structure on a smooth manifold. Introduce a noncommutative foundations of these structures for a Poisson algebra. Introduce and investigate noncommutative Bott connection on a foliated manifold using the algebraic definition of submanifold and quotient manifold. Develop an algebraic construction for the reduction of a degenerated Poisson algebra.
The notion of homogeneous tensors is discussed. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between multivector fields on a manifold $M$, homogeneous with respect to a vector field $Δ$ on $M$, and first-order polydifferential operators on a closed submanifold $N$ of codimension 1 such that $Δ$ is transversal to $N$. This correspondence relates the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket of multivector fields on $M$ to the Schouten-Jacobi bracket of first-order polydifferential operators on $N$ and generalizes the Poissonization of Jacobi manifolds. Actually, it can be viewed as a super-Poissonization…
In this paper, we develop holomorphic Jacobi structures. Holomorphic Jacobi manifolds are in one-to-one correspondence with certain homogeneous holomorphic Poisson manifolds. Furthermore, holomorphic Poisson manifolds can be looked at as special cases of holomorphic Jacobi manifolds. We show that holomorphic Jacobi structures yield a much richer framework than that of holomorphic Poisson structures. We also discuss the relationship between holomorphic Jacobi structures, generalized contact bundles and Jacobi-Nijenhuis structures.
In this paper we construct a non-skewsymmetric version of a Poisson bracket on the algebra of smooth functions on an odd Jacobi supermanifold. We refer to such Poisson-like brackets as Loday-Poisson brackets. We examine the relations between the Hamiltonian vector fields with respect to both the odd Jacobi structure and the Loday-Poisson structure. Furthermore, we show that the Loday-Poisson bracket satisfies the Leibniz rule over the noncommutative product derived from the homological vector field.
Non-self-adjoint dynamical systems, e.g., nonholonomic systems, can admit an almost Poisson structure, which is formulated by a kind of Poisson bracket satisfying the usual properties except for the Jacobi identity. A general theory of the almost Poisson structure is investigated based on a decomposition of the bracket into a sum of a Poisson one and an almost Poisson one. The corresponding relation between Poisson structure and symplectic structure is proved, making use of Jacobiizer and symplecticizer. Based on analysis of pseudo-symplectic structure of constraint submanifold of Chaplygin no…
A new n-dimensional family of Poisson structures is globally characterized and analyzed, including the construction of its main features: the symplectic structure and the reduction to the Darboux canonical form. Examples are given and include the generalization of previously known solution families such as the separable Poisson structures.
Fix a codimension-1 affine Poisson variety $(X,π_X)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ with an isolated singularity at the origin. We characterize possible extensions of $π_X$ to $\mathbb{C}^n$ using the Koszul complex of the Jacobian ideal of $X$. In the particular case of a singular surface, we show that there always exists an extension of $π_X$ to $\mathbb{C}^n$.
We define gauge transformations of Jacobi structures on a manifold. This is related to gauge transformations of Poisson structures via the Poissonization. Finally, we discuss how the contact structure of a contact groupoid is effected by a gauge transformation of the Jacobi structure on its base.
We study contact structures on nonnegatively-graded manifolds equipped with homological contact vector fields. In the degree 1 case, we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between such structures (with fixed contact form) and Jacobi manifolds. This correspondence allows us to reinterpret the Poissonization procedure, taking Jacobi manifolds to Poisson manifolds, as a supergeometric version of symplectization.
We study quasi-Jacobi and Jacobi-quasi bialgebroids and their relationships with twisted Jacobi and quasi Jacobi manifolds. We show that we can construct quasi-Lie bialgebroids from quasi-Jacobi bialgebroids, and conversely, and also that the structures induced on their base manifolds are related via a quasi Poissonization.
Jacobi groupoids are introduced as a generalization of Poisson and contact groupoids and it is proved that generalized Lie bialgebroids are the infinitesimal invariants of Jacobi groupoids. Several examples are discussed.
The determination of solutions of the Jacobi partial differential equations (PDEs) for finite-dimensional Poisson systems is considered. In particular, a novel procedure for the construction of solution families is developed. Such a procedure is based on the use of time reparametrizations preserving the existence of a Poisson structure. As a result, a method which is valid for arbitrary values of the dimension and the rank of the Poisson structure under consideration is obtained. In this article two main families of time reprametrizations of this kind are characterized. In addition, these resu…
Jacobi-Nijenhuis algebroids are defined as a natural generalization of Poisson-Nijenhuis algebroids, in the case where there exists a Nijenhuis operator on a Jacobi algebroid which is compatible with it. We study modular classes of Jacobi and Jacobi-Nijenhuis algebroids.
In this paper, we consider the hamiltonian formulation of nonholonomic systems with symmetries and study several aspects of the geometry of their reduced almost Poisson brackets, including the integrability of their characteristic distributions. Our starting point is establishing global formulas for the nonholonomic Jacobiators, before and after reduction, which are used to clarify the relationship between reduced nonholonomic brackets and twisted Poisson structures. For certain types of symmetries (generalizing the Chaplygin case), we obtain genuine Poisson structures on the reduced spaces an…
We present an approach to Jacobi and contact geometry that makes many facts, presented in the literature in an overcomplicated way, much more natural and clear. The key concepts are Kirillov manifolds and linear Kirillov structures, i.e., homogeneous Poisson manifolds and, respectively, homogeneous linear Poisson manifolds. The difference with the existing literature is that the homogeneity of the Poisson structure is related to a principal ${\rm GL}(1,{\mathbb R})$-bundle structure on the manifold and not just to a vector field. This allows for working with Jacobi bundle structures on nontriv…
A Kaehler-Nijenhuis manifold is a Kaehler manifold M, with metric g, complex structure J and Kaehler form F, endowed with a Nijenhuis tensor field A that is compatible with the Poisson stucture defined by F in the sense of the theory of Poisson-Nijenhuis structures. If this happens, and if either AJ=JA or AJ=-JA, M is foliated by im A into non degenerate Kaehler-Nijenhuis submanifolds. If A is a non degenerate (1,1)-tensor field on M, (M,g,J,A) is a Kaehler-Nijenhuis manifold iff one of the following two properties holds: 1) A is associated with a symplectic structure of M that defines a Poiss…
We show that the Gerstenhaber algebra of the 1-jet Lie algebroid of a Jacobi manifold has a canonical exact generator, and discuss duality between its homology and the Lie algebroid cohomology. We also discuss a new example of a Lie bialgebroid on Poisson manifolds.
Some aspects of the relationship between conservativeness of a dynamical system (namely the preservation of a finite measure) and the existence of a Poisson structure for that system are analyzed. From the local point of view, due to the Flow-Box Theorem we restrict ourselves to neighborhoods of singularities. In this sense, we characterize Poisson structures around the typical zero-Hopf singularity in dimension 3 under the assumption of having a local analytic first integral with non-vanishing first jet by connecting with the classical Poincaré center problem. From the global point of view, w…
A systematic investigation of the skew-symmetric solutions of the three-dimensional Jacobi equations is presented. As a result, three disjoint and complementary new families of solutions are characterized. Such families are very general, thus unifying many different and well-known Poisson structures seemingly unrelated which now appear embraced as particular cases of a more general solution. This unification is not only conceptual but allows the development of algorithms for the explicit determination of important properties such as the symplectic structure, the Casimir invariants and the Darb…
We describe a method for solving the Maurer-Cartan structure equation associated with a Lie algebra that isolates the role of the Jacobi identity as an obstruction to integration. We show that the method naturally adapts to two other interesting situations: local symplectic realizations of Poisson structures, in which case our method sheds light on the role of the Poisson condition as an obstruction to realization; and the Maurer-Cartan structure equation associated with a Lie algebroid, in which case we obtain an explicit formula for a solution to the equation which generalizes the well known…
The notion of a Dirac submanifold of a Poisson manifold was studied by Xu (arXiv:math.SG/0110326). We give an interpretation of Xu's definition in terms of a general notion of tensor fields soldered to a normalized submanifold. Then, this interpretation is used to define Dirac submanifolds of a Jacobi manifold. Several properties and examples are discussed.
We introduce the concept of twisted contact groupoids, as an extension either of contact groupoids or of twisted symplectic ones, and we discuss the integration of twisted Jacobi manifolds by twisted contact groupoids. We also investigate the very close relationships which link homogeneous twisted Poisson manifolds with twisted Jacobi manifolds and homogeneous twisted symplectic groupoids with twisted contact ones. Some examples for each structure are presented.
In this paper, some of formulations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations for Hamiltonian system and regular reduced Hamiltonian systems are given. At first, an important lemma is proved, and it is a modification for the corresponding result of Abraham and Marsden in [1], such that we can prove two types of geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theorem for a Hamiltonian system on the cotangent bundle of a configuration manifold, by using the symplectic structure and dynamical vector field. Then these results are generalized to the regular reducible Hamiltonian system with symmetry and momentum map, by using the re…
Motivated by the importance of symplectic isotropic realisations in the study of Poisson manifolds, this paper investigates the local and global theory of contact isotropic realisations of Jacobi manifolds, which are those of minimal dimension. These arise naturally when considering multiplicity-free actions in contact geometry, as shown in this paper. The main results concern a classification of these realisations up to a suitable notion of isomorphism, as well as establishing a relation between the existence of symplectic and contact isotropic realisations for Poisson manifolds. The main too…
In this note we show that given an exact QS-manifold (a natural generalisation of an exact Poisson manifold) one can associate a family of odd Jacobi structures on the same underlying supermanifold.
We study a class of Poisson tensors on a fibered manifold which are compatible with the fiber bundle structure by the so-called almost coupling condition. In the case of a $5$-dimensional orientable fibered manifolds with $2$-dimensional bases, we describe a global behavior of almost coupling Poisson tensors and their singularities by using a bigraded factorization of the Jacobi identity. In particular, we present some unimodularity criteria and describe a class of gauge type transformations preserving the almost coupling property.
We study affine Jacobi structures on an affine bundle $π:A\to M$, i.e. Jacobi brackets that close on affine functions. We prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between affine Jacobi structures on $A$ and Lie algebroid structures on the vector bundle $A^+=\bigcup_{p\in M}Aff(A_p,\R)$ of affine functionals. Some examples and applications, also for the linear case, are discussed. For a special type of affine Jacobi structures which are canonically exhibited (strongly-affine or affine-homogeneous Jacobi structures) over a real vector space of finite dimension, we describe the leaves of i…
One can associate to many of the well known algebraically integrable systems of Jacobians (generalized Hitchin systems, Sklyanin) a ruled surface which encodes much of its geometry. If one looks at the classification of such surfaces, there is one case of a ruled surface that does not seem to be covered. This is the case of projective bundle associated to the first jet bundle of a topologically nontrivial line bundle. We give the integrable system corresponding to this surface; it turns out to be a deformation of the Hitchin system.
We extend the construction of the BFV-complex of a coisotropic submanifold from the Poisson setting to the Jacobi setting. In particular, our construction applies in the contact and l.c.s. settings. The BFV-complex of a coisotropic submanifold $S$ controls the coisotropic deformation problem of $S$ under both Hamiltonian and Jacobi equivalence.
A new family of skew-symmetric solutions of the Jacobi partial differential equations for finite-dimensional Poisson systems is characterized and analyzed. Such family has some remarkable properties. In first place, it is defined for arbitrary values of the dimension and the rank. Secondly, it is described in terms of arbitrary differentiable functions, namely it is not limited to a given degree of nonlinearity. Additionally, it is possible to determine explicitly the fundamental properties of those solutions, such as their Casimir invariants and the algorithm for the reduction to the Darboux …
This is the second part of a series of two papers dedicated to a systematic study of holomorphic Jacobi structures. In the first part, we introduced and study the concept of a holomorphic Jacobi manifold in a very natural way as well as various tools. In the present paper, we solve the integration problem for holomorphic Jacobi manifolds by proving that they integrate to complex contact groupoids. A crucial tool in our proof is what we call the "homogenization scheme", which allows us to identify holomorphic Jacobi manifolds with homogeneous holomorphic Poisson manifolds and holomorphic contac…
An n-dimensional solution family of the Jacobi equations is characterized and investigated, including the global determination of its main features: the Casimir invariants, the construction of the Darboux canonical form and the proof of integrability for the related Poisson systems. Examples are given and include novel Poisson formulations.
We discuss the integrability of Jacobi manifolds by contact groupoids, and then look at what the Jacobi point of view brings new into Poisson geometry. In particular, using contact groupoids, we prove a Kostant-type theorem on the prequantization of symplectic groupoids, which answers a question posed by Weinstein and Xu \cite{prequan}. The methods used are those of Crainic-Fernandes on $A$-paths and monodromy group(oid)s of algebroids. In particular, most of the results we obtain are valid also in the non-integrable case.
Non-holonomic mechanical systems can be described by a degenerate almost-Poisson structure (dropping the Jacobi identity) in the constrained space. If enough symmetries transversal to the constraints are present, the system reduces to a nondegenerate almost-Poisson structure on a ``compressed'' space. Here we show, in the simplest non-holonomic systems, that in favorable circumnstances the compressed system is conformally symplectic, although the ``non-compressed'' constrained system never admits a Jacobi structure (in the sense of Marle et al.).
A three-dimensional family of solutions of the Jacobi equations for Poisson systems is characterized. In spite of its general form it is possible the explicit and global determination of its main features, such as the symplectic structure and the construction of the Darboux canonical form. Examples are given.
In this paper, we attach an $L_\infty$-algebra to any coisotropic submanifold in a Jacobi manifold. Our construction generalizes and unifies analogous constructions by Oh-Park (symplectic case), Cattaneo-Felder (Poisson case), Lê-Oh (locally conformal symplectic case). As a new special case, we attach an $L_\infty$-algebra to any coisotropic submanifold in a contact manifold. The $L_\infty$-algebra of a coisotropic submanifold $S$ governs the (formal) deformation problem of $S$.
A family of solutions of the Jacobi PDEs is investigated. This family is $n$-dimensional, of arbitrary nonlinearity and can be globally analyzed (thus improving the usual local scope of Darboux theorem). As an outcome of this analysis it is demonstrated that such Poisson structures lead to integrable systems. The solution family embraces as particular cases different systems of applied interest that are also regarded as examples.
