We show that any two-dimensional odd dihedral representation ρover a finite field of characteristic p>0 of the absolute Galois group of the rational numbers can be obtained from a Katz modular form of level N, character εand weight k, where N is the conductor, εis the prime-to-p part of the determinant and k is the so-called minimal weight of ρ. In particular, k=1 if and only if ρis unramified at p. Direct arguments are used in the exceptional cases, where general results on weight and level lowering are not available.
We study the action of the Galois group on the pro-l-completion of the fundamental group of P^1 - {0, infinity and N-th roots of unity}. We describe the Lie algebra of the image of the Galois action and relate with the geometry of the modular varieties for GL_m for m = 1,2,3,... This story is the l-adic side of the motivic theory of multiple polylogarithms at roots of unity, which generalize the classical cyclotomy theory.
Let $L/k$ an Galois extension of number fields with Galois group isomorphic to a dihedral group of order $2n$. In this note, we give a general description of the Hasse norm principle for $L/k$ and the weak approximation for the norm one torus $R^1_{L/k}(\mathbb{G}_m)$ associated to $L/k$.
We establish the automorphy of some families of 2-dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of a totally real field, which do not satisfy the so-called `Taylor--Wiles hypothesis'. We apply this to the problem of the modularity of elliptic curves over totally real fields
We prove modularity of some two dimensional, 2-adic Galois representations over totally real fields that are nearly ordinary and that are residually dihedral. We do this by employing the strategy of Skinner and Wiles, using Hida families, together with the 2-adic patching method of Khare and Wintenberger. As an application we deduce modularity of some elliptic curves over totally real fields that have good ordinary or multiplicative reduction at places above 2.
Let $p$ be an odd prime. For field extensions $L/\mathbb{Q}_p$ with Galois group isomorphic to the dihedral group $D_{2p}$ of order $2p$, we consider the problem of computing a basis of the associated order in each Hopf Galois structure and the module structure of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_L$. We solve the case in which $L/\mathbb{Q}_p$ is not totally ramified and present a practical method which provides a complete answer for the cases $p=3$ and $p=5$. We see that within this family of dihedral extensions, the ring of integers is always free over the associated orders in the different…
For an odd prime number $p$, we consider degree $p$ extensions $L/K$ of $p$-adic fields with normal closure $\widetilde{L}$ such that the Galois group of $\widetilde{L}/K$ is the dihedral group of order $2p$. We shall prove a complete characterization of the freeness of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ over its associated order $\mathfrak{A}_{L/K}$ in the unique Hopf-Galois structure on $L/K$, which is analogous to the one already known for cyclic degree $p$ extensions of $p$-adic fields. We shall derive positive and negative results on criteria for the freeness of $\mathcal{O}_L$ as $\mat…
N. Katz has shown that any irreducible representation of the Galois group of F_q((t)) has unique extension to a special representation of the Galois group of k(t) unramified outside 0 and infinity and tamely ramified at infinity. In this paper we analyze the number of not necessarily special such extensions and relate this question to a description of bases in irreducible representations of multiplicative groups of division algebras.
We study the inequities in the distribution of Frobenius elements in Galois extensions of the rational numbers with Galois groups that are either dihedral $D_{2n}$ or (generalized) quaternion $\mathbb H_{2n}$ of two-power order. In the spirit of recent work of Fiorilli and Jouve arXiv:2001.05428, we study, under natural hypotheses, some families of such extensions, in a horizontal aspect, where the degree is fixed, and in a vertical aspect, where the degree goes to infinity. Our main contribution uncovers in families of extensions a phenomenon, for which Ng gave numerical evidence : real zeros…
Let F/k be a Galois extension of number fields with dihedral Galois group of order 2q, where q is an odd integer. We express a certain quotient of S-class numbers of intermediate fields, arising from Brauer-Kuroda relations, as a unit index. Our formula is valid for arbitrary extensions with Galois group D_{2q} and for arbitrary Galois-stable sets of primes S, containing the Archimedean ones. Our results have curious applications to determining the Galois module structure of the units modulo the roots of unity of a D_{2q}-extension from class numbers and S-class numbers. The techniques we use …
Let $K/F$ be a finite Galois extension of fields with $Gal(K/F)=Γ$. In an earlier work of Timothy Kohl, the author enumerated dihedral Hopf-Galois structures acting on dihedral extensions. Dihedral group is one particular example of semidirect product of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$. In this article we count the number of Hopf-Galois structures with Galois group $Γ$ of type $G$, where $Γ,G$ are groups of the form $\mathbb{Z}_N\rtimes_ϕ\mathbb{Z}_2$ when $N$ is odd with radical of $N$ being a Burnside number. As an application we also find the corresponding number of skew braces.
We prove a simple explicit formula for the local Katz-Radon transform of an l-adic representation of the Galois group of the fraction field of a strictly henselian discrete valuation ring with positive residual characteristic, which can be defined as the local additive convolution with a fixed tame character. The formula is similar to one proved by D. Arinkin in the D-module setting, and answers a question posed by N. Katz.
We discuss isomorphism questions concerning the Hopf algebras that yield Hopf-Galois structures for a fixed separable field extension $L/K$. We study in detail the case where $L/K$ is Galois with dihedral group $D_p$, $p\ge 3$ prime and give explicit descriptions of the Hopf algebras which act on $L/K$. We also determine when two such Hopf algebras are isomorphic, either as Hopf algebras or as algebras. For the case $p=3$ and a chosen $L/K$, we give the Wedderburn-Artin decompositions of the Hopf algebras.
This article deals with universal deformations of dihedral representations with a particular focus on the question when the universal deformation is dihedral. Results are obtained in three settings: (1) representation theory, (2) algebraic number theory, (3) modularity. As to (1), we prove that the universal deformation is dihedral if all infinitesimal deformations are dihedral. Concerning (2) in the setting of Galois representations of number fields, we give sufficient conditions to ensure that the universal deformation relatively unramified outside a finite set of primes is dihedral, and dis…
A two-dimensional Galois representation into the Hecke algebra of Katz modular forms of weight one over a finite field of characteristic p is constructed and is shown to be unramified at p in most cases.
Katz and Sarnak predicted that the one level density of the zeros of a family of $L$-functions would fall into one of five categories. In this paper, we show that the one level density for $L$-functions attached to cubic Galois number fields falls into the category associated with unitary matrices.
We introduce Galois families of modular forms. They are a new kind of family coming from Galois representations of the absolute Galois groups of rational function fields over the rational field. We exhibit some examples and provide an infinite Galois family of non-liftable weight one Katz modular eigenforms over an algebraic closure of F_p for p in {3,5,7,11}.
This paper initiates a research program that seeks to recover algebro-geometric Galois representations from combinatorial data. We study tropicalizations equipped with symmetries coming from the Galois-action present on the lattice of $1$-parameter subgroups inside ambient Galois-twisted toric varieties. Over a Henselian field, the resulting tropicalization maps become Galois-equivariant. We call their images Galois-equivariant tropicalizations, and use them to construct a large supply of Galois representations in the tropical cellular cohomology groups of Itenberg, Katzarkov, Mikhalkin, and Z…
Let p be an odd prime and let L/k be a Galois extension of number fields whose Galois group is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 2p. Let S be a finite set of primes of L which is stable under the action of Gal(L/k). The Lichtenbaum conjecture on special values of the Dedekind zeta function at negative integers, together with Brauer formalism for Artin's L-functions, gives a (conjectural) formula relating orders of motivic cohomology groups of rings of S-integers and higher regulators of S-units of the subextensions of L/k. In analogy with the classical case of special values at 0, we g…
We use explicit methods to study the 4-torsion points on the Jacobian variety of the Fermat quartic. With the aid of computer algebra systems, we explicitly give a basis of the group of 4-torsion points. We calculate the Galois action, and show that the image of the mod 4 Galois representation is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order 8. As applications, we calculate the Mordell-Weil group of the Jacobian variety of the Fermat quartic over each subfield of the 8-th cyclotomic field. We determine all of the points on the Fermat quartic defined over quadratic extensions of the 8-th cyclotomic…
In this article new cases of the Inverse Galois Problem are established. The main result is that for a fixed integer n, there is a positive density set of primes p such that PSL_2(F_{p^n}) occurs as the Galois group of some finite extension of the rational numbers. These groups are obtained as projective images of residual modular Galois representations. Moreover, families of modular forms are constructed such that the images of all their residual Galois representations are as large as a priori possible. Both results essentially use Khare's and Wintenberger's notion of good-dihedral primes. Pa…
We show that a sufficient condition for an irreducible automorphic Galois representation $ρ: G_F\to\mathrm{GL}_2({\overline{\bf F}_p})$ of a totally real field $F$ to have an automorphic crystalline lift is that for each place $v$ of $F$ above $p$ the restriction $\mathrm{det}ρ|_{I_v}$ is a fixed power of the mod $p$ cyclotomic character. Moreover, we show that the only obstruction to controlling the level and character of such automorphic lifts arises for badly dihedral representations.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $F$ a totally real number field. For each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ above $p$ we construct a Hecke operator $T_\mathfrak{p}$ acting on $(\mathrm{mod}\, p^m)$ Katz Hilbert modular classes which agrees with the classical Hecke operator at $\mathfrak{p}$ for global sections that lift to characteristic zero. Using these operators and the techniques of patching complexes of F. Calegari and D. Geraghty we prove that the Galois representations arising from torsion Hilbert modular classes of parallel weight ${\bf 1}$ are unramified at $p$ when $[F:\mathbb Q]=2$. Some pa…
In this paper, we consider integral and irreducible binary quartic forms whose Galois group is isomorphic to a subgroup of the dihedral group of order eight. We first show that the set of all such forms is a union of families indexed by integral binary quadratic forms $f(x,y)$ of non-zero discriminant. Then, we shall enumerate the $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-equivalence classes of all such forms associated to a fixed $f(x,y)$.
This is the text of a talk to the study week on \emph{Modular forms and Galois representations} held in Luminy, 1997. We give a survey of $p$-adic modular forms, as developped by Serre, Katz, Hida, Wiles, Coleman and others...
We prove automorphy lifting results for geometric representations $ρ:G_F \rightarrow GL_2(\mathcal{O})$, with $F$ a totally real field, and $\mathcal{O}$ the ring of integers of a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ with $p$ an odd prime, such that the residual representation $\barρ$ is totally odd and induced from a character of the absolute Galois group of the quadratic subfield $K$ of $F(ζ_p)/F$. Such representations fail the Taylor-Wiles hypothesis and the patching techniques to prove automorphy do not work. We apply this to automorphy of elliptic curves $E$ over $F$, when $E$ has no $F$ ra…
We work out a non-trivial example of lifting a so-called weak eigenform to a true, characteristic 0 eigenform. The weak eigenform is closely related to Ramanujan's tau function whereas the characteristic 0 eigenform is attached to an elliptic curve defined over ${\mathbb Q}$. We produce the lift by showing that the coefficients of the initial, weak eigenform (almost all) occur as traces of Frobenii in the Galois representation on the 4-torsion of the elliptic curve. The example is remarkable as the initial form is known not to be liftable to any characteristic 0 eigenform of level 1. We use th…
We study modular Galois representations mod $p^m$. We show that there are three progressively weaker notions of modularity for a Galois representation mod $p^m$: we have named these `strongly', `weakly', and `dc-weakly' modular. Here, `dc' stands for `divided congruence' in the sense of Katz and Hida. These notions of modularity are relative to a fixed level $M$. Using results of Hida we display a `stripping-of-powers of $p$ away from the level' type of result: A mod $p^m$ strongly modular representation of some level $Np^r$ is always dc-weakly modular of level $N$ (here, $N$ is a natural numb…
We prove an integral R = T theorem for odd two dimensional p-adic representations of the absolute Galois group which are unramified at p, extending results of [CG] to the non-minimal case. We prove, for any p, the existence of Katz modular forms modulo p of weight one which do not lift to characteristic zero.
The l-adic parabolic cohomology groups attached to noncongruence subgroups of SL_2(Z) are finite-dimensional representations of Gal(Qbar/F) for some number field F. We exhibit examples (with F=Q) giving rise to Galois representations whose images are open subgroups of the full group of symplectic similitudes (of arbitrary dimension). The determination of the image of the Galois group relies on Katz's classification theorem for reductive subalgebras of gl(N) containing a principal nilpotent element; the paper also contains a short conceptual proof of this theorem, suggested by I. Gronowski.
A well-known formula of Whipple relates certain hypergeometric values $_7F_6(1)$ and $_4F_3(1)$. In this paper we revisit this relation from the viewpoint of the underlying hypergeometric data $HD$, to which there are also associated hypergeometric character sums and Galois representations. We explain a special structure behind Whipple's formula when the hypergeometric data $HD$ are primitive and self-dual. If the data are also defined over $\mathbb Q$, by the work of Katz, Beukers, Cohen, and Mellit, there are compatible families of $\ell$-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of …
Let $ρ$ f,$λ$ be the residual Galois representation attached to a newform f and a prime ideal $λ$ in the integer ring of its coefficient field. In this paper, we prove explicit bounds for the residue characteristic of the prime ideals $λ$ such that $ρ$ f,$λ$ is exceptional, that is reducible, of projective dihedral image, or of projective image isomorphic to A4, S4 or A5. We also develop explicit criteria to check the reducibility of $ρ$ f,$λ$ , leading to an algorithm that compute the exact set of such $λ$. We have implemented this algorithm in PARI/GP. Along the way, we construct lifts of Ka…
Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $K/K_0$ be a quadratic extension of number fields. Denote by $K_\pm$ the maximal $\mathbb{Z}_p$-power extensions of $K$ that are Galois over $K_0$, with $K_+$ abelian over $K_0$ and $K_-$ dihedral over $K_0$. In this paper we show that for a Galois representation over $K_0$ satisfying certain hypotheses, if it has odd Selmer rank over $K$ then for one of $K_\pm$ its Selmer rank over $L$ is bounded below by $[L:K]$ for $L$ ranging over the finite subextensions of $K$ in $K_\pm$. Our method or proof generalizes a method of Mazur--Rubin, building upon results of N…
Sect 1 introduces Nielsen classes attached to (G,C), where C is r conjugacy classes in a finite group G, and a braid action on them. These give reduced Hurwitz spaces, denoted H(G,C)^rd. The section concludes with a braid formula for the genus of these spaces when r = 4. If there is at least one prime l for which G is divisible by l, but has no Z/l quotient, then there is a canonical tower of reduced Hurwitz spaces over H(G,C)^rd, using the Universal Frattini cover, ~G, of G, and ~G_ab, its abelianized version. The towers are nonempty assuming C are l' classes satisfying a cohomological condit…
We give a construction of a new $p$-adic Maass-Shimura operator defined on an affinoid subdomain of the preperfectoid $p$-adic universal cover $\mathcal{Y}$ of a modular curve $Y$. We define a new notion of $p$-adic modular forms as sections of a certain sheaf $\mathcal{O}_Δ$ of "nearly rigid functions" which transform under the action of subgroups of the Galois group $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathcal{Y}/Y)$ by $\mathcal{O}_Δ^{\times}$-valued weight characters. This extends Katz's notion of $p$-adic modular forms as functions on the Igusa tower $Y^{\mathrm{Ig}}$; indeed we may recover Katz's theory by re…
In this paper we construct a connection on the trivial G-bundle on the projective line for any simple complex algebraic group G, which is regular outside of the points 0 and infinity, has a regular singularity at the point 0, with principal unipotent monodromy, and has an irregular singularity at the point infinity, with slope 1/h, the reciprocal of the Coxeter number of G. This connection, which admits the structure of an oper in the sense of Beilinson and Drinfeld, appears to be the characteristic 0 counterpart of a hypothetical family of l-adic representations, which should parametrize a sp…
We prove new modularity lifting theorems for p-adic Galois representations in situations where the methods of Wiles and Taylor--Wiles do not apply. Previous generalizations of these methods have been restricted to situations where the automorphic forms in question contribute to a single degree of cohomology. In practice, this imposes several restrictions -- one must be in a Shimura variety setting and the automorphic forms must be of regular weight at infinity. In this paper, we essentially show how to remove these restrictions. Our most general result is a modularity lifting theorem which, on…
