The uniform position principle states that, given an irreducible nondegenerate curve C in the projective r-space $P^r$, a general (r-2)-plane L is uniform, that is, projection from L induces a rational map from C to $P^1$ whose monodromy group is the full symmetric group. In this paper we show the locus of non-uniform (r-2)-planes has codimension at least two in the Grassmannian for a curve C with arbitrary singularities. This result is optimal in $P^2$. For a smooth curve C in $P^3$ that is not a rational curve of degree three, four or six, we show any irreducible surface of non-uniform lines is a Schubert cycle of lines through a point $x$, such that projection from $x$ is not a birational map of $C$ onto its image.
A. Girand has constructed an explicit two-parameter family of flat connections over the complex projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$. These connections have dihedral monodromy and their polar locus is a prescribed quintic composed of a conic and three tangent lines. In this paper, we give a generalization of this construction. That is, we construct an explicit $n$-parameter family of flat connections over the complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$. Moreover, we discuss the relation between these connections and the Garnier system.
We determine the image of the monodromy map for meromorphic projective structures with poles of orders greater than two. This proves the analogue of a theorem of Gallo-Kapovich-Marden, and answers a question of Allegretti and Bridgeland. Our proof uses coordinates on the moduli space of framed representations arising from the work of Fock and Goncharov.
We compute Stokes matrices and monodromy for the quantum cohomology of projective spaces. We prove that the Stokes' matrix of the quantum cohomology coincides with the Gram matrix in the theory of derived categories of coherent sheaves.
This article investigates the monodromy conjecture for a space monomial curve that appears as the special fiber of an equisingular family of curves with a plane branch as generic fiber. Roughly speaking, the monodromy conjecture states that every pole of the motivic, or related, Igusa zeta function induces an eigenvalue of monodromy. As the poles of the motivic zeta function associated with such a space monomial curve have been determined in earlier work, it remains to study the eigenvalues of monodromy. After reducing the problem to the curve seen as a Cartier divisor on a generic embedding s…
We study projective structures on a surface having poles of prescribed orders. We obtain a monodromy map from a complex manifold parameterising such structures to the stack of framed $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ local systems on the associated marked bordered surface. We prove that the image of this map is contained in the union of the domains of the cluster charts. We discuss a number of open questions concerning this monodromy map.
Fix a degree $d$ projective curve $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ over an algebraically closed field $K$. Let $U \subset (\mathbb{P}^r)^*$ be a dense open subvariety such that every hyperplane $H \in U$ intersects $X$ in $d$ smooth points. Varying $H \in U$ produces the monodromy action $φ: π_1^{\text{ét}}(U) \to S_d$. Let $G_X := \mathrm{im}(φ)$. The permutation group $G_X$ is called the sectional monodromy group of $X$. In characteristic zero $G_X$ is always the full symmetric group, but sectional monodromy groups in characteristic $p$ can be smaller. For a large class of space curves ($r \geqslant…
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given (in terms of monodromy) for extending a family of smooth curves over an open subset U of S to a family of stable curves over S. More precisely, we introduce the abelian monodromy extension (AME) property and show that the standard Deligne-Mumford compactification is the unique, maximal AME compactification of the moduli space of curves. We also show that the Baily-Borel compactification is the unique, maximal projective AME compactification of the moduli space of abelian varieties.
Let C_g be a general curve of genus g>3. Guralnick and others proved that the monodromy group of a cover C_g-> P^1 of degree n is either S_n or A_n. We show that A_n occurs for n>2g. The corresponding result for S_n is classical.
We prove that the monodromy group of the inflection points of plane curves of degree $d$ is the symmetric group $\mathbb S_{3d(d-2)}$ for $d\geq 4$ and in the case $d=3$ this group is the group of the projective transformations of $\mathbb P^2$ leaving invariant the nine inflection points of the Fermat curve of degree three.
In many situations, the monodromy group of enumerative problems will be the full symmetric group. In this paper, we study a similar phenomenon on the rational curves in $|\mathcal{O}(1)|$ on a generic K3 surface of fixed genus over $\mathbb{C}$ as the K3 surface varies. We prove that when the K3 surface has genus $g$, $1\leq g\leq 3$, the monodromy group is the full symmetric group.
In this article, we compute the braid monodromy of two algebraic curves defined over R. These two curves are of complex level not bigger than 6, and they are unions of lines and conics. We use two different techniques for computing their braid monodromies. These results will be applied to computations of fundamental groups of their complements in C^2 and C PP^2.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p$ and let $X$ the projective line over $k$ with three points removed. We investigate which finite groups $G$ can arise as the monodromy group of finite étale covers of $X$ that are tamely ramified over the three removed points. This provides new information about the tame fundamental group of the projective line. In particular, we show that for each prime $p\ge 5$, there are families of tamely ramified covers with monodromy the symmetric group $S_n$ or alternating group $A_n$ for infinitely many $n$. These covers come from the moduli…
In this paper, we describe some arithmetic properties of Lame operators with finite dihedral projective monodromy. We take advantage of the deep link with Grothendieck's theory of dessins d'enfants. We focus more particularly on the case of projective monodromy of order 2p, where p is an odd prime number.
We study the Tannakian properties of the category of perverse sheaves on elliptic curves endowed with the convolution product. We establish that for certain sheaves with unipotent local monodromy over seven points the corresponding Tannaka group is isomorphic to $G_2$. This monodromy approach generalizes a result of Katz on the existence of $G_2$-motives in the middle cohomology of deformations of Beauville surfaces.
We develop recursive formulas for the horizontal and vertical monodromies of a quasi-ordinary surface. These are monodromies associated to the Milnor fiber of a slice transverse to a component of the singular locus. In the course of working out these recursions, we have discovered what appears to be a new way to express the monodromy associated to the Milnor fibration of a singular plane curve.
In [DW05] and [DW07], C. Deninger and A. Werner developed a partial p-adic analogue of the classical Narasimhan-Seshadri correspondence between vector bundles and representations of the fundamental group. We will investigate the various monodromy groups that occur in this theory, that is the image of these representations and their Zariski closure as well as the Tannaka dual group of these vector bundles.
We show that if we are given a smooth non-isotrivial family of elliptic curves over~$\mathbb C$ with a smooth base~$B$ for which the general fiber of the mapping $J\colon B\to\mathbb A^1$ (assigning $j$-invariant of the fiber to a point) is connected, then the monodromy group of the family (acting on $H^1(\cdot,\mathbb Z)$ of the fibers) coincides with $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$; if the general fiber has $m\ge2$ connected components, then the monodromy group has index at most~$2m$ in $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$. By contrast, in \emph{any} family of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\ge3$, the mon…
Let $X$ be a general complex projective hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $d>1$. A point $P$ not in $X$ is called uniform if the monodromy group of the projection of $X$ from $P$ is isomorphic to the symmetric group. We prove that all the points in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ are uniform for $X$, generalizing a result of Cukierman on general plane curves.
For any genus g > 1 we give an example of a family of smooth complex projective curves of genus g such that the image of the monodromy representation of the Hitchin connection on the sheaf of generalized SL(2)-theta functions of level l different from 1,2,4 and 8 contains an element of infinite order.
A family of proper smooth curves of genus $\geq 2$, parametrised by an open dense subset $U$ of a normal variety $S$, extends to $S$ if the natural map $π_1(U) \to π_1(S)$ on fundamental groups is an isomorphism. The criterion of this note is actually more precise.
We prove that there is an infinite sequence of pairs of plane cuspidal curves $C_{m,1}$ and $C_{m,2}$, such that the pairs $(\Bbb CP^2, C_{m,1})$ and $(\Bbb CP^2, C_{m,2})$ are diffeomorphic, but $C_{m,1}$ and $C_{m,2}$ have non-equivalent braid monodromy factorizations. These curves give rise to the negative solutions of "Dif=Def" and "Dif=Iso" problems for plane irreducible cuspidal curves. In our examples, $C_{m,1}$ and $C_{m,2}$ are complex conjugated.
This paper is the second in a series. The first one describes pillow degenerations of a $K3$ surface with genus $g$. In this paper we study the $(2,2)$-pillow degeneration of a non-prime $K3$ surface and the braid monodromy of the branch curve of the surface with respect to a generic projection onto $\C¶^2$. In future papers we study the fundamental group of the complement of the branch curve and the fundamental group of the Galois cover of the surface with respect to this generic projection.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. For a log curve $X/k^{\times}$ over the standard log point, we define (algebraically) a combinatorial monodromy operator on its log-de Rham cohomology group. The invariant part of this action has a cohomological description, it is the Du Bois cohomology of $X$. This can be seen as an analogue of the invariant cycles exact sequence for a semistable family (as in the complex, étale and $p$-adic settings). In the specific case in which $k=\mathbb C$ and $X$ is the central fiber of a semistable degeneration over the complex disc, our …
A Kodaira fibration is a non-isotrivial fibration $f\colon S\rightarrow B$ from a smooth algebraic surface $S$ to a smooth algebraic curve $B$ such that all fibers are smooth algebraic curves of genus $g$. Such fibrations arise as complete curves inside the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of genus $g$ algebraic curves. We investigate here the possible connected monodromy groups of a Kodaira fibration in the case $g=3$ and classify which such groups can arise from a Kodaira fibration obtained as a general complete intersection curve inside a subvariety of $\mathcal{M}_3$ parametrizing curves whose…
The fundamental group of a smooth projective variety is fibered if it maps onto the fundamental group of smooth curve of genus 2 or more. The goal of this paper is to establish some strong restrictions on these groups, and in particular on the fundamental groups of Kodaira surfaces. In the specific case of a Kodaira surface, these results are in the form of restrictions on the monodromy representation into the mapping class group. When the monodromy is composed with certain standard representations, the images are Zariski dense in a semisimple group of Hermitian type.
For an ample line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ on a complete toric surface $X$, we consider the subset $V_{\mathcal{L}} \subset \vert \mathcal{L} \vert$ of irreducible, nodal, rational curves contained in the smooth locus of $X$. We study the monodromy map from the fundamental group of $V_{\mathcal{L}}$ to the permutation group on the set of nodes of a reference curve $C \in V_{\mathcal{L}}$. We identify a certain obstruction map $\varPsi_{X}$ defined on the set of nodes of $C$ and show that the image of the monodromy is exactly the group of deck transformations of $\varPsi_{X}$, provided that $\mathc…

Given any connected topological space $X$, assume that there exists an epimorphism $ϕ: π_1(X) \to \mathbb{Z}$. The deck transformation group $\mathbb{Z}$ acts on the associated infinite cyclic cover $X^ϕ$ of $X$, hence on the homology group $H_i(X^ϕ, \mathbb{C})$. This action induces a linear automorphism on the torsion part of the homology group as a module over the Laurent ring $\mathbb{C}[t,t^{-1}]$, which is a finite dimensional $\mathbb{C}$-vector space. We study the sizes of the Jordan blocks of this linear automorphism. When $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold, we show that all the Jordan …
The braid monodromy factorization of the branch curve of a surface of general type is known to be an invariant that completely determines the diffeomorphism type of the surface. Calculating this factorization is of high technical complexity; computing the braid monodromy factorization of branch curves of surfaces uncovers new facts and invariants of the surfaces. Since finding the branch curve of a surface is very difficult, we degenerate the surface into a union of planes. Thus, we can find the braid monodromy of the branch curve of the degenerated surface, which is a union of lines. The rege…
Let $Y$ be an $(m+1)$-dimensional irreducible smooth complex projective variety embedded in a projective space. Let $Z$ be a closed subscheme of $Y$, and $δ$ be a positive integer such that $\mathcal I_{Z,Y}(δ)$ is generated by global sections. Fix an integer $d\geq δ+1$, and assume the general divisor $X \in |H^0(Y,\ic_{Z,Y}(d))|$ is smooth. Denote by $H^m(X;\mathbb Q)_{\perp Z}^{\text{van}}$ the quotient of $H^m(X;\mathbb Q)$ by the cohomology of $Y$ and also by the cycle classes of the irreducible components of dimension $m$ of $Z$. In the present paper we prove that the monodromy represent…
The geometric monodromy of a plane curve singularity is a quasi-finite diffeomorphism. In this paper we locate the reduction curves of the geometric monodromy and the quadratic vanishing cycles of the singularity. An application to the geometric monodromy group is given.
We describe an algorithm computing the monodromy and the pole order filtration on the top Milnor fiber cohomology of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$ whose pole order spectral sequence degenerates at the second page. In the case of hyperplane arrangements and free, locally quasi-homogeneous hypersurfaces, and assuming a key conjecture, this algorithm is much faster than for a hypersurface as above. Our conjecture is supported by the results due to L. Narv\' ez Macarro and M. Saito on the roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials of such hypersurfaces, by all the examples computed so far, and by one p…
In this manuscript we prove that if two cuspidal plane curves have equivalent braid monodromy factorizations, then they are smoothly isotopic in the plane. As a consequence of this and the Chisini conjecture, we obtain that if two discriminant curves (or branch curves in other terminology) of generic projections (to the plane) of surfaces of general type imbedded in a projective space by means of a multiple canonical class have equivalent braid monodromy factorizations, then the surfaces are diffeomorphic (if we consider them as real 4-folds).
In "Curves on Heisenberg invariant quartic surfaces in projective 3-space", Eklund showed that a general $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface contains at least $320$ conics. In this paper we analyse the field of definition of those conics as well as their Monodromy group. As a result, we prove that the moduli space $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{4}$-invariant quartic K3 surface with a marked conic has $10$ irreducible components.
Let ${\cal M}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$, smooth curves. For a family $C\to S$ of such curves over a connected base and a geometric point $ξ$ on $S$, the associated monodromy representation is the induced homomorphism $π_1(S,ξ)\toπ_1({\cal M}_{g,n},[C_ξ])$ on algebraic fundamental groups. It is well known that, if $S$ is irreducible, reduced and locally of finite type over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, the fibre $C_ξ$ and the corresponding monodromy representation determine the relative isomorphism class of the family. In the first part of the p…
We speculate on the relationship between the solvable monodromy extension (SME) property and log canonical models. A motivating example is the moduli space of smooth curves which, by earlier work, is known to have this SME property. In this case the maximal SME compactification is the moduli space of stable nodal curves which coincides with its log canonical model.
The sextic plane curves that are invariant under the standard action of the icosahedral group on the projective plane make up a pencil of genus ten curves (spanned by a sum of six lines and a three times a conic). This pencil was first considered in a note by R.~M.~Winger in 1925 and is nowadays named after him. We gave this a modern treatment and proved among other things that it contains essentially every smooth genus ten curve with icosahedral symmetry. We here consider the monodromy group and the period map naturally defined by the icosahedral symmetry. We showed that this monodromy group …
Let $ρ$ be a finite-dimensional faithful representation of a semisimple algebraic group $G$. By means of a deformation argument, we show that there exists a family of Abelian varieties over a smooth and projective curve over the algebraic closure of a prime field of positive characteristic, such that its $\ell$-adic monodromy group covers $G$ and its $\ell$-adic monodromy representation contains $ρ$.
We study the Dynkin diagram associated to the monodromy of direct sums of polynomials. The monodromy problem asks under which conditions on a polynomial, the monodromy of a vanishing cycle generates the whole homology of a regular fiber. We consider the case $y^4+g(x)$, which is a generalization of the results of Christopher and Marde$\check{s}$ić about the monodromy problem for hyperelliptic curves. Moreover, We solve the monodromy problem for direct sums of fourth degree polynomials.
For a subvariety of a smooth projective variety, consider the family of smooth hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree containing it, and take the quotient of the middle cohomology of the hypersurfaces by the cohomology of the ambient variety and also by the cycle classes of the irreducible components of the subvariety. Using Deligne's semisimplicity theorem together with Steenbrink's theory for semistable degenerations, we give a simpler proof of the first author's theorem (with a better bound of the degree of hypersurfaces) that this monodromy representation is irreducible.
We study a problem related to Kontsevich's homological mirror symmetry conjecture for the case of a generic curve $\cal Y$ with bi-degree (2,2) in a product of projective lines ${\Bbb P}^{1} \times {\Bbb P}^{1}$. We calculate two differenent monodromy representations of period integrals for the affine variety ${\cal X}^{(2,2)}$ obtained by the dual polyhedron mirror variety construction from $\cal Y$. The first method that gives a full representation of the fundamental group of the complement to singular loci relies on the generalised Picard-Lefschetz theorem. The second method uses the analyt…
We prove a large sieve statement for the average distribution of Frobenius conjugacy classes in arithmetic monodromy groups over finite fields. As a first application we prove a stronger version of a result of Chavdarov on the ``generic'' irreducibility of the numerator of the zeta functions in a family of curves with large monodromy.
We generalize the Moishezon Teicher algorithm that was suggested for the computation of the braid monodromy of an almost real curve. The new algorithm suits a larger family of curves, and enables the computation of braid monodromy not only of caspidal curves, but of general algebraic curves, with some non simple singularities. Moreover, it works also when in the fiber the curve admits any number of imaginary points. We also provide two examples of how to use the generalized algorithm.
In this paper we construct effective invariants for braid monodromy of affine curves. We also prove that, for some curves, braid monodromy determines their topology. We apply this result to find a pair of curves with conjugate equations in a number field but which do not admit any orientation-preserving homeomorphism.
We introduce and study the vanishing homology of singular projective hypersurfaces. We prove its concentration in two levels in case of 1-dimensional singular locus $Σ$, and moreover determine the ranks of the nontrivial homology groups. These two groups depend on the monodromy at special points of $Σ$ and on the effect of the monodromy of the local system over its complement.
We compute the $\integ/\ell$ and $\integ_\ell$ monodromy of every irreducible component of the moduli spaces of hyperelliptic and trielliptic curves. In particular, we provide a proof that the $\integ/\ell$ monodromy of the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ is the symplectic group $\sp_{2g}(\integ/\ell)$. We prove that the $\integ/\ell$ monodromy of the moduli space of trielliptic curves with signature $(r,s)$ is the special unitary group $\su_{(r,s)}(\integ/\ell\tensor\integ[ζ_3])$.
We compute the Galois groups for a certain class of polynomials over the the field of rational numbers that was introduced by S. Mori and study the monodromy of corresponding hyperelliptic jacobians.
Suppose that g > 2, that n > 0 and that m > 0. In this paper we show that if E is an irreducible smooth variety which dominates a divisor D in M_{g,n}[m], the moduli space of n-pointed, smooth curves of genus g with a level m structure, then the closure of the image of the monodromy representation pi_1(E,e)--> Sp_g(Zhat) has finite index in Sp_g(Zhat). A similar result is proved for codimension 1 families of the universal principally polarized abelian variety of dimension g > 2. Both results are deduced from a general "non-abelian strictness theorem". The first result is used in arXiv:1001.500…
