This note intended to give a counterexample to a question related to the following theorem. Let D be a differential domain finitely generated over a differential field F with algebraically closed field of constants,C, of characteristic 0. If D has no nonzero proper differential ideals, then the differential constants of the quotient field of D is also C. The converse is known to be false but the question of whether the differential domain D can be finitely extended within its quotient field to a differential domain with no nonzero proper differential ideals has been raised. A counterexample in the case that F is infinitely generated over C has appeared. This paper intended to give a counterexample in the case where F = C negating the natural question whether adding the condition that F be finitely generated over C is sufficient to guarantee a positive answer to the question. The question is still open.
Let $\mathscr{L}\subset \mathbb{Z}^n$ be a lattice, $I$ its corresponding lattice ideal, and $J$ the toric ideal arising from the saturation of $\mathscr{L}$. We produce infinitely many examples, in every codimension, of pairs $I,J$ where one of these ideals is Cohen--Macaulay but the other is not.
We construct a 3-dimensional complete intersection toric variety on which the subadditivity formula doesn't hold, answering negatively a question by Takagi and Watanabe. A combinatorial proof of the subadditivity formula on 2-dimensional normal toric varieties is also provided.
When $I$ is the radical homogeneous ideal of a finite set of points in projective $N$-space, ${\bf P}^N$, over a field $K$, it has been conjectured that $I^{(rN-N+1)}$ should be contained in $I^r$ for all $r\geq 1$. Recent counterexamples show that this can fail when N=r=2. We study properties of the resulting ideals. We also show that failures occur for infinitely many $r$ in every characteristic $p>2$ when N=2, and we find additional positive characteristic failures when $N>2$.
We disprove Holtz and Ron's conjecture that the power ideal C_{A,-2} of a hyperplane arrangement A (also called the "internal zonotopal space") is generated by A-monomials. We also show that, in contrast with the case k \geq -2, the Hilbert series of C_{A,k} is not determined by the matroid of A for k \leq -6.
In this paper, we point out several errors in [M.Afkhami, K.Khashyarmanesh and K.Nafar, Zero divisor graph of a lattice with respect to an ideal, Beitr Algebra Geom (2015), 217-225.]. In the previous article, Afkhami claimed that the intersection of all prime ideals belonging to an ideal I of a distributive lattice L equals to I. In this corrigendum, a counterexample for this sentence is constructed. Afkhami demonstrate a counterexample to a certain theorem which satisfies the necessary and the sufficient condition of the theorem. On the other hand, we reform many proofs in Afkhami's article.
In a recent work, Kaiser, Stehlík and Škrekovski provide a family of critically 3-chromatic graphs whose expansions do not result in critically 4-chromatic graphs, and thus give counterexamples to a conjecture of Francisco, Ha and Van Tuyl. The cover ideal of the smallest member of this family also gives a counterexample to the persistence and non-increasing depth properties. In this paper, we show that the cover ideals of all members of their family of graphs indeed fail to have the persistence and non-increasing depth properties.
We show that in general the third symbolic power of a radical ideal of points in the complex projective plane is not contained in the second usual power of that ideal. This answers in negative a question asked by Huneke and generalized by Harbourne.
Let R be a Noetherian local ring with the maximal ideal m and dim R=1. In this paper, we shall prove that the module Ext^1_R(R/Q,R) does not vanish for every parameter ideal Q in R, if the embedding dimension v(R) of R is at most 4 and the ideal m^2 kills the 0th local cohomology module H_m^0(R). The assertion is no longer true unless v(R) \leq 4. Counterexamples are given. We shall also discuss the relation between our counterexamples and a problem on modules of finite G-dimension.
Students studying the Lasker-Noether theorem on primary decomposition of ideals may want to see an example of an ideal (necessarily in a non-Noetherian ring) which does not have a primary decomposition. The most well-known counterexample is alluded to in an exercise from Atiyah and MacDonald's Commutative Algebra text. It involves the ring of continuous real-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff space, and the details require the use of Urysohn's lemma from topology. In this article, we excise the unnecessary connection to topology by finding a purely algebraic counterexample in the power se…
Let $R=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and $I$ be a monomial ideal of degree $d\leq 2$. We show that $(I^{k+1}:I)=I^k$ for all $k\geq 1$ and we disprove a motivation question that was appeared in \cite[Question 2.51]{CHHV} by providing of a counterexample. Also, by this counterexample, we give a negative answer to the question that depth function of square-free monomial ideals are non-increasing.
Let $φ: S = k[y_0,..., y_n] \to R = k[y_0,...,y_n]$ be given by $y_i \to f_i$ where $f_0,...,f_n$ is an $R$-regular sequence of homogeneous elements of the same degree. A recent paper shows for ideals, $I_Δ\subseteq S$, of matroids, $Δ$, that $I_Δ^{(m)} \subseteq I^r$ if and only if $φ_*(I_Δ)^{(m)} \subseteq φ_*(I_Δ)^r$ where $φ_*(I_Δ)$ is the ideal generated in $R$ by $φ(I_Δ)$. We prove this result for saturated homogeneous ideals $I$ of configurations of points in $\mathbb{P}^n$ and use it to obtain many new counterexamples to $I^{(rn - n + 1)} \subseteq I^r$ from previously known counterexa…
We study the concept of canonical characteristic set of a characterizable differential ideal. We propose an efficient algorithm that transforms any characteristic set into the canonical one. We prove the basic properties of canonical characteristic sets. In particular, we show that in the ordinary case for any ranking the order of each element of the canonical characteristic set of a characterizable differential ideal is bounded by the order of the ideal. Finally, we propose a factorization-free algorithm for computing the canonical characteristic set of a characterizable differential ideal re…
Let R be a differential domain finitely generated over a differential field, F, with field of constants, C, of characteristic 0. Let E be the quotient field of R. The paper investigates necessary and sufficient conditions on R's differential ideals for the constants of differentiation of E to also be C (no new constants). It was known that no proper nonzero differential ideals guarantees no new constants. The paper shows that when C is algebraically closed that if R has only finitely many height one prime differential ideals that E will have no new constants. An example with F infinitely gener…
We use the method of characteristic sets with respect to two term orderings to prove the existence and obtain a method of computation of a bivariate Kolchin-type dimension polynomial associated with a non-reflexive difference-differential ideal in the algebra of difference-differential polynomials with several basic derivations and one translation. In particular, we obtain a new proof and a method of computation of the dimension polynomial of a non-reflexive prime difference ideal in the algebra of difference polynomials over an ordinary difference field. As a consequence, it is shown that the…
We resolve an open question posed by the authors of arXiv:1501.06925v2 in 2015 concerning a Gröbner theoretic approach for the noetherianity of the twisted commutative algebra ${\rm Sym}({\rm Sym}^2(\mathbf{C}^\infty))$. We provide a negative answer to their question by producing an explicit antichain. In doing so, we establish a connection to well studied posets of graphs under the subgraph and induced subgraph relation. We then analyze this connection to suggest future paths of investigation, for example a deeper study of initial ideals in twisted commutative algebras.
The paper investigates the converse to the following theorem. Let R be a differential domain R which is finitely generated over a differential field F whose field of constants is algebraically closed of characteristic 0. If R has no proper nonzero differential ideals, then the quotient field, E, of R has no new constants. The converse is false, but a question was raised about the existence of a finitely generated extension of R within E which has no proper nonzero differential ideals when E has no new constants. This posted paper gives one example to show this is false and two limited positive…
We call an ideal in a polynomial ring robust if it can be minimally generated by a universal Gröbner basis. In this paper we show that robust toric ideals generated by quadrics are essentially determinantal. We then discuss two possible generalizations to higher degree, providing a tight classification for determinantal ideals, and a counterexample to a natural extension for Lawrence ideals. We close with a discussion of robustness of higher Betti numbers.
Stillman posed a question as to whether the projective dimension of a homogeneous ideal I in a polynomial ring over a field can be bounded by some formula depending only on the number and degrees of the minimal generators of I. More recently, motivated by work on local cohomology modules in characteristic p, Zhang asked more specifically if the projective dimension of I is bounded by the sum of the degrees of the generators. We define a family of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring over a field of arbitrary characteristic whose projective dimension grows exponentially if the number and deg…
We generalize the differential dimension polynomial from prime differential ideals to characterizable differential ideals. Its computation is algorithmic, its degree and leading coefficient remain differential birational invariants, and it decides equality of characterizable differential ideals contained in each other.
In this paper we study the problem of computing a Kolchin characteristic set of a radical differential ideal. The central part of the article is the presentation of algorithms solving this problem in two principal cases: for ordinary differential polynomials and in the partial differential case. Our computations are mainly performed with respect to orderly rankings. We also discuss the usefulness of regular and characteristic decompositions of radical differential ideals. In the partial differential case we give an algorithm for computing characteristic sets in the special case of radical diff…
We consider the Rosenfeld-Groebner algorithm for computing a regular decomposition of a radical differential ideal generated by a set of ordinary differential polynomials in n indeterminates. For a set of ordinary differential polynomials F, let M(F) be the sum of maximal orders of differential indeterminates occurring in F. We propose a modification of the Rosenfeld-Groebner algorithm, in which for every intermediate polynomial system F, the bound M(F) is less than or equal to (n-1)!M(G), where G is the initial set of generators of the radical ideal. In particular, the resulting regular syste…
In 1936, Krull asked if the integral closure of a primary ideal is still primary. Fifty years later, Huneke partially answered this question by giving a primary polynomial ideal whose integral closure is not primary in a regular local ring of characteristic $p=2$. We provide counterexamples to Krull's question regarding polynomial rings with any characteristics. We also find that the Jacobian ideal $J$ of the polynomial $f = x^6 + y^6 + x^4 z t + z^3$ given by Briançon and Speder in 1975 is a counterexample to Krull's question. Let $V_1$ be the hypersurface defined by $f = 0$ and $V_2$ be its …
Let R be a Stanley-Reisner ring (that is, a reduced monomial ring) with coefficients in a domain k, and K its associated simplicial complex. Also let D_k(R) be the ring of k-linear differential operators on R. We give two different descriptions of the two-sided ideal structure of D_k(R) as being in bijection with certain well-known subcomplexes of K; one based on explicit computation in the Weyl algebra, valid in any characteristic, and one valid in characteristic p based on the Frobenius splitting of R. A result of Traves [Tra99] on the D_k(R)-module structure of R is also given a new proof a…
This article concerns monomial ideals fixed by differential operators of affine semi-group rings over $\mathbb{C}$. We give a complete characterization of when this happens. Perhaps surprisingly, every monomial ideal is fixed by an infinite set of homogeneous differential operators and is in fact determined by them. This opens up a new tool for studying monomial ideals. We explore applications of this to (mixed) multiplier ideals and other variants as well as give examples of detecting ideal membership in integrally closed powers and symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals.
An ideal in a polynomial ring encodes a system of linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients. Primary decomposition organizes the solutions to the PDE. This paper develops a novel structure theory for primary ideals in a polynomial ring. We characterize primary ideals in terms of PDE, punctual Hilbert schemes, relative Weyl algebras, and the join construction. Solving the PDE described by a primary ideal amounts to computing Noetherian operators in the sense of Ehrenpreis and Palamodov. We develop new algorithms for this task, and we present efficient implementations.
The Ritt problem asks if there is an algorithm that tells whether one prime differential ideal is contained in another one if both are given by their characteristic sets. We give several equivalent formulations of this problem. In particular, we show that it is equivalent to testing if a differential polynomial is a zero divisor modulo a radical differential ideal. The technique used in the proof of equivalence yields algorithms for computing a canonical decomposition of a radical differential ideal into prime components and a canonical generating set of a radical differential ideal. Both prop…
We study the Hilbert series of a family of ideals J_ϕgenerated by powers of linear forms in k[x_1,...,x_n]. Using the results of Emsalem-Iarrobino, we formulate this as a question about fatpoints in P^{n-1}. In the three variable case this is equivalent to studying the dimension of a linear system on a blow up of P^2. The ideals that arise have the points in very special position, but because there are only seven points, we can apply results of Harbourne to obtain the classes of the negative curves. Reducing to an effective, nef divisor and using Riemann-Roch yields a formula for the Hilbert s…
We introduce differential primary decompositions for ideals in a commutative ring. Ideal membership is characterized by differential conditions. The minimal number of conditions needed is the arithmetic multiplicity. Minimal differential primary decompositions are unique up to change of bases. Our results generalize the construction of Noetherian operators for primary ideals in the analytic theory of Ehrenpreis-Palamodov, and they offer a concise method for representing affine schemes. The case of modules is also addressed. We implemented an algorithm in Macaulay2 that computes the minimal dec…
The first purpose of this paper is to point out a curious result announced by Macaulay on the Hilbert function of a differential module in his famous book The Algebraic Theory of Modular Systems published in 1916. Indeed, on page 78/79 of this book, Macaulay is saying the following: " A polynomial ideal $\mathfrak{a} \subset k[χ\_1$,..., $χ\_n]=k[χ]$ is of the {\it principal class} and thus {\it unmixed} if it has rank $r$ and is generated by $r$ polynomials. Having in mind this definition, a primary ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ with associated prime ideal $\mathfrak{p} = rad(\mathfrak{q})$ is such th…
