The paper investigates the converse to the following theorem. Let R be a differential domain R which is finitely generated over a differential field F whose field of constants is algebraically closed of characteristic 0. If R has no proper nonzero differential ideals, then the quotient field, E, of R has no new constants. The converse is false, but a question was raised about the existence of a finitely generated extension of R within E which has no proper nonzero differential ideals when E has no new constants. This posted paper gives one example to show this is false and two limited positive results in Krull dimension one or two.
We study the concept of canonical characteristic set of a characterizable differential ideal. We propose an efficient algorithm that transforms any characteristic set into the canonical one. We prove the basic properties of canonical characteristic sets. In particular, we show that in the ordinary case for any ranking the order of each element of the canonical characteristic set of a characterizable differential ideal is bounded by the order of the ideal. Finally, we propose a factorization-free algorithm for computing the canonical characteristic set of a characterizable differential ideal re…
Let R be a differential domain finitely generated over a differential field, F, with field of constants, C, of characteristic 0. Let E be the quotient field of R. The paper investigates necessary and sufficient conditions on R's differential ideals for the constants of differentiation of E to also be C (no new constants). It was known that no proper nonzero differential ideals guarantees no new constants. The paper shows that when C is algebraically closed that if R has only finitely many height one prime differential ideals that E will have no new constants. An example with F infinitely gener…
We use the method of characteristic sets with respect to two term orderings to prove the existence and obtain a method of computation of a bivariate Kolchin-type dimension polynomial associated with a non-reflexive difference-differential ideal in the algebra of difference-differential polynomials with several basic derivations and one translation. In particular, we obtain a new proof and a method of computation of the dimension polynomial of a non-reflexive prime difference ideal in the algebra of difference polynomials over an ordinary difference field. As a consequence, it is shown that the…
We generalize the differential dimension polynomial from prime differential ideals to characterizable differential ideals. Its computation is algorithmic, its degree and leading coefficient remain differential birational invariants, and it decides equality of characterizable differential ideals contained in each other.
This note intended to give a counterexample to a question related to the following theorem. Let D be a differential domain finitely generated over a differential field F with algebraically closed field of constants,C, of characteristic 0. If D has no nonzero proper differential ideals, then the differential constants of the quotient field of D is also C. The converse is known to be false but the question of whether the differential domain D can be finitely extended within its quotient field to a differential domain with no nonzero proper differential ideals has been raised. A counterexample in…
In this paper, we prove the moving lemma, addition and subtraction principles, in a more general setup than the available ones. We apply these results to explore a question of Nori on homotopy of sections of projective modules. As another application, we investigate the Segre class of ideals, extending the existing results.
In this paper we study the problem of computing a Kolchin characteristic set of a radical differential ideal. The central part of the article is the presentation of algorithms solving this problem in two principal cases: for ordinary differential polynomials and in the partial differential case. Our computations are mainly performed with respect to orderly rankings. We also discuss the usefulness of regular and characteristic decompositions of radical differential ideals. In the partial differential case we give an algorithm for computing characteristic sets in the special case of radical diff…
We consider the Rosenfeld-Groebner algorithm for computing a regular decomposition of a radical differential ideal generated by a set of ordinary differential polynomials in n indeterminates. For a set of ordinary differential polynomials F, let M(F) be the sum of maximal orders of differential indeterminates occurring in F. We propose a modification of the Rosenfeld-Groebner algorithm, in which for every intermediate polynomial system F, the bound M(F) is less than or equal to (n-1)!M(G), where G is the initial set of generators of the radical ideal. In particular, the resulting regular syste…
Let R be a Stanley-Reisner ring (that is, a reduced monomial ring) with coefficients in a domain k, and K its associated simplicial complex. Also let D_k(R) be the ring of k-linear differential operators on R. We give two different descriptions of the two-sided ideal structure of D_k(R) as being in bijection with certain well-known subcomplexes of K; one based on explicit computation in the Weyl algebra, valid in any characteristic, and one valid in characteristic p based on the Frobenius splitting of R. A result of Traves [Tra99] on the D_k(R)-module structure of R is also given a new proof a…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of the strong Rees property (SRP) for $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals of a Noetherian local ring and prove that any power of the maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ has its property if the associated graded ring $G$ of $\mathfrak{m}$ satisfies $\text{depth} \ G \ge 2$. As its application, we characterize two-dimensional excellent normal local domains so that $\mathfrak{m}$ is a $p_g$-ideal. Finally we ask what $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideals have SRP and state a conjecture which characterizes the case when $\mathfrak{m}^n$ are the only ideals which have SRP.
This article concerns monomial ideals fixed by differential operators of affine semi-group rings over $\mathbb{C}$. We give a complete characterization of when this happens. Perhaps surprisingly, every monomial ideal is fixed by an infinite set of homogeneous differential operators and is in fact determined by them. This opens up a new tool for studying monomial ideals. We explore applications of this to (mixed) multiplier ideals and other variants as well as give examples of detecting ideal membership in integrally closed powers and symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals.
Let $R$ be a commutative chain ring. We use a variation of Gröbner bases to study the lattice of ideals of $R[x]$. Let $I$ be a proper ideal of $R[x]$. We are interested in the following two questions: When is $R[x]/I$ Frobenius? When is $R[x]/I$ Frobenius and local? We develop algorithms for answering both questions. When the nilpotency of $\text{rad}\,R$ is small, the algorithms provide explicit answers to the questions.
The symbolic powers, in general, are not equal to the ordinary powers. Therefore, one interesting question here is for what classes of ideals ordinary and symbolic powers coincide? The answer to this question for squarefree monomial ideals may be packing property. In this paper, we classify all cubic path ideals for those the symbolic and ordinary powers coincide.
This is my PhD thesis from 2004 under Prof. S.M. Bhatwadekar. Here we answer a question of Nori and prove the following result. Let $A$ be a smooth affine domain of dimension $d$ over an infinite perfect field. Let $I$ be an ideal of $A[T]$ of height $n$ such that $2n \geq d+3$. Given surjections $ϕ:(A[T]/I)^n \rightarrow I/I^2$ and $ρ:A^n \rightarrow I(0)$ such that $ϕ(0)=ρ\otimes A/I(0)$, then there exist a surjection $Φ:A[T]^n \rightarrow I$ such that $Φ(0)=ρ$ and $Φ\otimes A/I =ϕ$. This is a joint work with S.M. Bhatwadekar.
In commutative ring theory, there is a theorem of Cohen which states that if in a commutative ring all prime ideals are finitely generated then every ideal is finitely generated. However, it is known that having only maximal ideals finitely generated doesn't imply all ideals be finitely generated. In his article we ask the question that what happens if we assume all non-maximal ideals are finitely generated, and we answer the question by showing that indeed then all maximal ideals are also finitely generated i.e. the ring becomes Noetherian.
Stillman posed a question as to whether the projective dimension of a homogeneous ideal I in a polynomial ring over a field can be bounded by some formula depending only on the number and degrees of the minimal generators of I. More recently, motivated by work on local cohomology modules in characteristic p, Zhang asked more specifically if the projective dimension of I is bounded by the sum of the degrees of the generators. We define a family of homogeneous ideals in a polynomial ring over a field of arbitrary characteristic whose projective dimension grows exponentially if the number and deg…
The purpose of this paper is to give affirmative answers to two open questions as follows. Let $(R, \m)$ be a generalized Cohen-Macaulay Noetherian local ring. Both questions, the first question was raised by M. Rogers \cite {R} and the second one is due to S. Goto and H. Sakurai \cite {GS1}, ask whether for every parameter ideal $\q$ contained in a high enough power of the maximal ideal $\m $ the following statements are true: (1) The index of reducibility $N_R(\q;R)$ is independent of the choice of $\q$; and (2) $I^2=\q I$, where $I=\q:_R\m$.
Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Lindo and Pande have recently posed the question asking when every ideal of R is isomorphic to some trace ideal of R. This paper studies this question and gives several answers. In particular, a complete answer is given in the case where R is local: it is proved in this paper that every ideal of R is isomorphic to a trace ideal if and only if R is an artinian Gorenstein ring, or a 1-dimensional hypersurface with multiplicity at most 2, or a unique factorization domain.
Let $(R,m)$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of positive dimension $d$ and infinite residue field. Let $I$ be an m-primary ideal and $J$ a minimal reduction of $I$. In this paper, we show that $\widetilde{r_J(I)}\leq r_J(I)$. This answer to a question that made by M.E. Rossi and I. Swanson in [\ref{Rs}, Question 4.6].
An ideal in a polynomial ring encodes a system of linear partial differential equations with constant coefficients. Primary decomposition organizes the solutions to the PDE. This paper develops a novel structure theory for primary ideals in a polynomial ring. We characterize primary ideals in terms of PDE, punctual Hilbert schemes, relative Weyl algebras, and the join construction. Solving the PDE described by a primary ideal amounts to computing Noetherian operators in the sense of Ehrenpreis and Palamodov. We develop new algorithms for this task, and we present efficient implementations.
The Ritt problem asks if there is an algorithm that tells whether one prime differential ideal is contained in another one if both are given by their characteristic sets. We give several equivalent formulations of this problem. In particular, we show that it is equivalent to testing if a differential polynomial is a zero divisor modulo a radical differential ideal. The technique used in the proof of equivalence yields algorithms for computing a canonical decomposition of a radical differential ideal into prime components and a canonical generating set of a radical differential ideal. Both prop…
We deal with the complete-intersection property of maximally differential ideals. Also, we connect the Gorenstein homology of derivations to the Gorenstein property of the base rings. These equipped with some applications.
We introduce differential primary decompositions for ideals in a commutative ring. Ideal membership is characterized by differential conditions. The minimal number of conditions needed is the arithmetic multiplicity. Minimal differential primary decompositions are unique up to change of bases. Our results generalize the construction of Noetherian operators for primary ideals in the analytic theory of Ehrenpreis-Palamodov, and they offer a concise method for representing affine schemes. The case of modules is also addressed. We implemented an algorithm in Macaulay2 that computes the minimal dec…
If $I$ is a monomial ideal with linear quotients, then it has componentwise linear quotients. However, the converse of this statement is an open question. In this paper, we provide two classes of ideals for which the converse of this statement holds. First class is the componentwise polymatroidal ideals in $K[x,y]$ and the second one is the componentwise polymatroidal ideals with strong exchange property.
We give an affirmative answer to a question due to J. He and A. Van Tuyl, proving that the arithmetical rank of a special monomial ideal equals to the projective dimension of corresponding quotient module.
Given the monomial ideal I=(x_1^{α_1},...,x_{n}^{α_{n}})\subset K[x_1,...,x_{n}] where α_{i} are positive integers and K a field and let J be the integral closure of I . It is a challenging problem to translate the question of the normality of J into a question about the exponent set Γ(J) and the Newton polyhedron NP(J). A relaxed version of this problem is to give necessary or sufficient conditions on α_1,...,α_{n} for the normality of J. We show that if α_{i}ε{s,l} with s and l arbitrary positive integers, then J is normal.
Ideals generated by adjacent 2-minors are studied. First, the problem when such an ideal is a prime ideal as well as the problem when such an ideal possesses a quadratic Gröbner basis is solved. Second, we describe explicitly a primary decomposition of the radical ideal of an ideal generated by adjacent 2-minors, and challenge the question of classifying all ideals generated by adjacent 2-minors which are radical ideals. Finally, we discuss connectedness of contingency tables in algebraic statistics.
In this paper, we prove a finite basis theorem for radical well-mixed difference ideals generated by binomials. As a consequence, every strictly ascending chain of radical well-mixed difference ideals generated by binomials in a difference polynomial ring is finite, which answers a question raised by E. Hrushovski in the binomial case.
All rings are commutative with $1\neq0$. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of weakly $n$-absorbing ideals generalizing weakly 2-absorbing ideals. We prove that over a $u$-ring $R$ the Anderson-Badawi's conjectures about $n$-absorbing ideals and the Badawi-Yousefian's question about weakly 2-absorbing ideals hold.
The Lefschetz question asks if multiplication by a power of a general linear form, $L$, on a graded algebra has maximal rank (in every degree). We consider a quotient by an ideal that is generated by powers of linear forms. Then the Lefschetz question is, for example, related to the problem whether a set of fat points imposes the expected number of conditions on a linear system of hypersurfaces of fixed degree. Our starting point is a result that relates Lefschetz properties in different rings. It suggests to use induction on the number of variables, $n$. If $n = 3$, then it is known that mult…
In CI-Liaison, significant effort has been made to study ideals that are in the linkage class of a complete intersection, which are called licci ideals. In a polynomial ring, recently E. Chong defined a "sequentially bounded" condition on the degrees of the forms generating the regular sequences, and used this condition to find a large class of licci ideals satisfying the Eisenbud-Green-Harris Conjecture (among them, grade $3$ homogeneous Gorenstein ideals). He raised the question of whether all homogeneous licci ideals are sequentially bounded licci. In this paper we construct a class of exam…
Let $R$ be a local Gorenstein ring with infinite residue field of arbitrary characteristic. Let $I$ be an $R$--ideal with $g=\height I >0$, analytic spread $\ell$, and let $J$ be a minimal reduction of $I$. We further assume that $I$ satisfies $G_{\ell}$ and ${\depth} R/I^j \geq \dim R/I -j+1$ for $1 \leq j \leq \ell-g$. The question we are interested in is whether $\core{I}=J^{n+1}:\ds \sum_{b \in I} (J,b)^n$ for $n \gg 0$. In the case of analytic spread one Polini and Ulrich show that this is true with even weaker assumptions (\cite[Theorem 3.4]{PU}). We give a negative answer to this questi…
Let $R=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and $I$ be a monomial ideal of degree $d\leq 2$. We show that $(I^{k+1}:I)=I^k$ for all $k\geq 1$ and we disprove a motivation question that was appeared in \cite[Question 2.51]{CHHV} by providing of a counterexample. Also, by this counterexample, we give a negative answer to the question that depth function of square-free monomial ideals are non-increasing.
In this paper, basic properties of monomial difference ideals are studied. We prove the finitely generated property of well-mixed difference ideals generated by monomials. Furthermore, a finite prime decomposition of radical well-mixed monomial difference ideals is given. As a consequence, we prove that every strictly ascending chain of radical well-mixed monomial difference ideals in a difference polynomial ring is finite, which answers a question raised by E. Hrushovski in the monomial case. Moreover, the Alexander Duality for monomial ideals is generalized to the monomial case.
A central question in liaison theory asks whether every Cohen-Macaulay, graded ideal of a standard graded K-algebra belongs to the same G-liaison class of a complete intersection. In this paper we answer this question positively for toric ideals defining edge subrings of bipartite graphs.
Motivated by the problem of the existence of bounds on degrees and orders in checking primality of radical (partial) differential ideals, the nonstandard methods of van den Dries and Schmidt ["Bounds in the theory of polynomial rings over fields. A nonstandard approach.", Inventionnes Mathematicae, 76:77--91, 1984] are here extended to differential polynomial rings over differential fields. Among the standard consequences of this work are: a partial answer to the primality problem, the equivalence of this problem with several others related to the Ritt problem, and the existence of bounds for …
We study the relation type question, raised by C. Huneke, which asks whether for a complete equidimensional local ring R there exists a uniform bound for the relation type of parameter ideals. Wang gave a positive answer to this question when the non-Cohen-Macaulay locus of R, denoted by NCM(R), has dimension zero. We first present an example, due to the first author, which gives a negative answer to the question when dim NCM(R) is at least 2. The major part of our work then is to investigate the remaining case, i.e., when dim NCM(R) = 1. We introduce the notion of homology multipliers and sho…
The first purpose of this paper is to point out a curious result announced by Macaulay on the Hilbert function of a differential module in his famous book The Algebraic Theory of Modular Systems published in 1916. Indeed, on page 78/79 of this book, Macaulay is saying the following: " A polynomial ideal $\mathfrak{a} \subset k[χ\_1$,..., $χ\_n]=k[χ]$ is of the {\it principal class} and thus {\it unmixed} if it has rank $r$ and is generated by $r$ polynomials. Having in mind this definition, a primary ideal $\mathfrak{q}$ with associated prime ideal $\mathfrak{p} = rad(\mathfrak{q})$ is such th…
We study the linkage classes of homogeneous ideals in polynomial rings. An ideal is said to be homogeneously licci if it can be linked to a complete intersection using only homogeneous regular sequences at each step. We ask a natural question: if $I$ is homogeneously licci, then can it be linked to a complete intersection by linking using regular sequences of forms of smallest possible degree at each step (we call such ideals minimally homogeneously licci)? In this paper we answer this question in the negative. In particular, for every $n\geq 28$ we construct a set of $n$ points in $\mathbb P^…
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unity. The co-maximal ideal graph of $R$, denoted by $Γ(R)$, is a graph whose vertices are the proper ideals of $R$ which are not contained in the Jacobson radical of $R$, and two vertices $I_1$ and $I_2$ are adjacent if and only if $I_1 + I_2 = R$. We classify all commutative rings whose co-maximal ideal graphs are planar. In 2012 the following question was posed: If $Γ(R)$ is an infinite star graph, can $R$ be isomorphic to the direct product of a field and a local ring? In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this question.
In this paper we investigate the question of normality for special monomial ideals in a polynomial ring over a field. We first include some expository sections that give the basics on the integral closure of a ideal, the Rees algebra on an ideal, and some fundamental results on the integral closure of a monomial ideal.
This article concerns commutative algebras over a field $k$ of characteristic zero which are finite dimensional as vectorspaces, and particularly those of such algebras which are graded. Here the term graded is applied to non-negatively graded algebras $A$ with $A_0$ reduced and finite dimensional. Thus the trivial grading $A=A_0$ is only allowed if $A$ is a product of finite field extensions of $k$. It has been conjectured (G. Cortiñas, S. Geller, C. Weibel; The Artinian Berger Conjecture. Math. Zeitschrift {\bf 228} 3 (1998) 569-588) that for all finite dimensional algebras $A$ which are not…
In Picard-Vessiot theory, the Galois theory for linear differential equations, the Picard-Vessiot ring plays an important role, since it is the Picard-Vessiot ring which is a torsor (principal homogeneous space) for the Galois group (scheme). Like fields are simple rings having only (0) and (1) as ideals, the Picard-Vessiot ring is a differentially simple ring, i.e. a differential ring having only (0) and (1) as differential ideals. Having in mind that the classical Galois theory is a theory of extensions of fields, i.e. of simple rings, it is quite natural to ask whether one can also set up a…
