An M-partition of a positive integer m is a partition with as few parts as possible such that any positive integer less than m has a partition made up of parts taken from that partition of m. This is equivalent to partitioning a weight m so as to be able to weigh any integer weight l < m with as few weights as possible and only one scale pan.
We show that the number of parts of an M-partition is a log-linear function of m and the M-partitions of m correspond to lattice points in a polytope. We exhibit a recurrence relation for counting the number of M-partitions of m and, for ``half'' of the positive integers, this recurrence relation will have a generating function. The generating function will be, in some sense, the same as the generating function for counting the number of distinct binary partitions for a given integer.
Using equivariant cohomology theory, Naruse obtained a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape $λ/μ$. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogues of Naruse's formula respectively by counting semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ and reverse plane partitions of shape $λ/μ$. When $λ$ and $μ$ are both staircase shape partitions, Morales, Pak and Panova conjectured that the generating function of reverse plane partitions of shape $λ/ μ$ can be expressed as a determinant whose entries are related to $q$-analogues of the Euler numbers. The objective of th…
We find out the number of different partitions of an n-kilogram stone into the minimum number of parts so that all integral weights from 1 to n kilograms can be weighed in one weighing using the parts of any of the partitions on a two-pan balance. In comparison to the traditional partitions, these partitions have advantage where there is a constraint on total weight of a set and the number of parts in the partition. They may have uses in determining the optimal size and number of weights and denominations of notes and coins.
Weight-equitable partitions of graphs, which are a natural extension of the well-known equitable partitions, have been shown to be a powerful tool to weaken the regularity assumption in several well-known eigenvalue bounds. In this work we aim to further our algebraic and computational understanding of weight-equitable partitions. We do so by showing several spectral properties and algebraic characterizations, and by providing a method to find coarse weight-equitable partitions.
The purpose of this paper is to find an explicit formula and asymptotic estimate for the total number of sum of weighted records over set partitions of $[n]$ in terms of Bell numbers. For that we study the generating function for the number of set partitions of $[n]$ according to the statistic sum of weighted records.
A natural generalization of a regular (or equitable) partition of a graph, which makes sense also for non-regular graphs, is the so-called weight-regular partition, which gives to each vertex $u\in V$ a weight that equals the corresponding entry $ν_u$ of the Perron eigenvector $\mathbfν$. This paper contains three main results related to weight-regular partitions of a graph. The first is a characterization of weight-regular partitions in terms of double stochastic matrices. Inspired by a characterization of regular graphs by Hoffman, we also provide a new characterization of weight-regularity …
We introduce and study the lattice of generalized partitions, called weighted partitions. This lattice possesses similar properties of the lattice of partitions. By use of the pictorial representation of a weighted partition, the total number is given by the successive Stirling transforms of the Stirling number of the second kind. We construct an explicit $EL$-labeling on the lattice, which implies this lattice is $EL$-shellable and hence shellable. We compute the Möbius function and the characteristic polynomial by use of a pictorial representation of a maximal decreasing chain. Further, a ma…
To an extended permutohedron we associate the weighted integer points enumerator, whose principal specialization is the $f$-polynomial. In the case of poset cones it refines Gessel's $\mathsf{P}$-partitions enumerator. We show that this enumerator is a quasisymmetric function obtained by universal morphism from the Hopf algebra of posets.
We prove a conjecture of Drake and Kim: the number of $2$-distant noncrossing partitions of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ is equal to the sum of weights of Motzkin paths of length $n$, where the weight of a Motzkin path is a product of certain fractions involving Fibonacci numbers. We provide two proofs of their conjecture: one uses continued fractions and the other is combinatorial.
We construct weight-preserving bijections between column strict shifted plane partitions with one row and alternating sign trapezoids with exactly one column in the left half that sums to $1$. Amongst other things, they relate the number of $-1$s in the alternating sign trapezoids to certain elements in the column strict shifted plane partitions that generalise the notion of special parts in descending plane partitions. The advantage of these bijections is that they include configurations with $-1$s, which is a feature that many of the bijections in the realm of alternating sign arrays lack.
Recently, Naruse discovered a hook length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape. Morales, Pak and Panova found two $q$-analogs of Naruse's hook length formula over semistandard Young tableaux (SSYTs) and reverse plane partitions (RPPs). As an application of their formula, they expressed certain $q$-Euler numbers, which are generating functions for SSYTs and RPPs of a zigzag border strip, in terms of weighted Dyck paths. They found a determinantal formula for the generating function for SSYTs of a skew staircase shape and proposed two conjectures related to RPPs of t…
We study the weighted partition function for lozenge tilings, with weights given by multivariate rational functions originally defined by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019) in the context of the factorial Schur functions. We prove that this partition function is symmetric for large families of regions. We employ both combinatorial and algebraic proofs.
We use the $q$-binomial theorem, the $q$-Gauss sum, and the ${}_2ϕ_1 \rightarrow {}_2ϕ_2$ transformation of Jackson to discover and prove many new weighted partition identities. These identities involve unrestricted partitions, overpartitions, and partitions with distinct even parts. Smallest part of the partitions plays an important role in our analysis. This work was motivated in part by the research of Krishna Alladi.
In this paper we refine a weighted partition identity of Alladi. We write explicit formulas of generating functions for the number of partitions grouped with respect to a partition statistic other than the norm. We tie our weighted results and the different statistics with the crank of a partition. In particular, we prove that the number of partitions into even number of distinct parts whose odd-indexed parts' sum is n is equal to the number of partitions of n with non-negative crank.
Kostant's partition function counts the number of distinct ways to express a weight of a classical Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ as a sum of positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. We refer to each of these expressions as decompositions of a weight. Our main result considers an infinite family of weights, irrespective of Lie type, for which we establish a closed formula for the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function and then prove that the (normalized) distribution of the number of positive roots in the decomposition of any of these weights converges to a Gaussian distribution as the rank of the Li…
This paper has a two-fold purpose. First, by considering a reformulation of a deep theorem of Göllnitz, we obtain a new weighted partition identity involving the Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, namely, partitions into parts differing by at least two. Consequences of this include Jacobi's celebrated triple product identity for theta functions, Sylvester's famous refinement of Euler's theorem, as well as certain weighted partition identities. Next, by studying partitions with prescribed bounds on successive ranks and replacing these with weighted Rogers-Ramanujan partitions, we obtain two new sets …
We utilize false theta function results of Nathan Fine to discover three new partition identities involving weights. These relations connect Göllnitz--Gordon type partitions and partitions with distinct odd parts, partitions into distinct parts and ordinary partitions, and partitions with distinct odd parts where the smallest positive integer that is not a part of the partition is odd and ordinary partitions subject to some initial conditions, respectively. Some of our weights involve new partition statistics, one is defined as the number of different odd parts of a partition larger than or eq…
We consider the poset of weighted partitions $Π_n^w$, introduced by Dotsenko and Khoroshkin in their study of a certain pair of dual operads. The maximal intervals of $Π_n^w$ provide a generalization of the lattice $Π_n$ of partitions, which we show possesses many of the well-known properties of $Π_n$. In particular, we prove these intervals are EL-shellable, we show that the Möbius invariant of each maximal interval is given up to sign by the number of rooted trees on on node set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ having a fixed number of descents, we find combinatorial bases for homology and cohomology, and …
In 1984, Bressoud and Subbarao obtained an interesting weighted partition identity for a generalized divisor function, by means of combinatorial arguments. Recently, the last three named authors found an analytic proof of the aforementioned identity of Bressoud and Subbarao starting from a $q$-series identity of Ramanujan. In the present paper, we revisit the combinatorial arguments of Bressoud and Subbarao, and derive a more general weighted partition identity. Furthermore, with the help of a fractional differential operator, we establish a few more Bressoud-Subbarao type weighted partition i…
A partition statistic ` crank' gives combinatorial interpretations for Ramanujan's famous partition congruences. In this paper, we establish an asymptotic formula, Ramanujan type congruences, and q-series identities that the number of partitions with even crank $M_e(n)$ minus the number of partitions with odd crank $M_o(n)$ satisfies. For example, we show that $M_e(5n+4)-M_o(5n+4)\equiv 0 \pmod 5.$ We also determine the exact values of $M_e(n)-M_o(n)$ in case of partitions into distinct parts, which are at most two and zero for infinitely many $n$.
Given a sparse undirected graph G with weights on the edges, a k-plex partition of G is a partition of its set of nodes such that each component is a k-plex. A subset of nodes S is a k-plex if the degree of every node in the associated induced subgraph is at least |S|-k. The maximum edge-weight k-plex partitioning (Max-EkPP) problem is to find a k-plex partition with maximum total weight, where the partition's weight is the sum of the weights on the edges in the solution. When k=1, all components in the partition are cliques and the problem becomes the well-known maximum edge-weight clique par…
We give a probalistic proof of the famous Meinardus' asymptotic formula for the number of weighted partitions with weakened one of the three Meinardus' conditions, and extend the resulting version of the theorem to other two classis types of decomposable combinatorial structures, which are called assemblies and selections. The results obtained are based on combining Meinardus' analytical approach with probabilistic method of Khitchine.
A Goellnitz-Gordon partition is one in which the parts differ by at least 2, and where the inequality is strict if a part is even. Let Q_i(n) denote the number of partitions of n into distinct parts not congruent to i mod 4. By attaching weights which are powers of 2 and imposing certain parity conditions on Goellnitz-Gordon partitions, we show that these are equinumerous with Q_i(n) for i=0,2. These complement results of Goellnitz on Q_i(n) for i=1,3, and of Alladi who provided a uniform treatment of all four Q_i(n), i=0,1,2,3, in terms of weighted partitions into parts differing by >= 4. Our…
We show that the sum of the four parameter weights over all ordinary or strict partitions with parts each less than or equal to a given integer $N$ is expressed by the Al-Salam Chihara polynomials. This weight is a generalization of the Andrews-Stanley partition function. As a corollary we prove C. Boulet's results when the sum runs over all ordinary or strict partitions. In the last section we study the weighted sum of Schur's $P$-functions and $Q$-functions, where the sum runs over all strict partitions.
Kostant's partition function counts the number of ways to represent a particular vector (weight) as a nonnegative integral sum of positive roots of a Lie algebra. For a given weight the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function is a polynomial where the coefficient of $q^k$ is the number of ways the weight can be written as a nonnegative integral sum of exactly $k$ positive roots. In this paper we determine generating functions for the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function when the weight in question is the highest root of the classical Lie algebras of types $B$, $C$ and $D$.
Given a complete graph with positive weights on its edges, we define the weight of a subset of edges as the product of weights of the edges in the subset and consider sums (partition functions) of weights over subsets of various kinds: cycle covers, closed walks, spanning trees. We show that if the weights of the edges of the graph are within a constant factor, fixed in advance, of each other then the bulk of the partition function is concentrated on the subsets of a particularly simple structure: cycle covers with few cycles, walks that visit every vertex only few times, and spanning trees wi…
In a recent work, Keith and Xiong gave a refinement of Glaisher's theorem by using a Sylvester-style bijection. In this paper, we introduce two families of colored partitions, flat and regular partitions, and generalize the bijection of Keith and Xiong to these partitions. We then state two results, the first at degree one, where partitions have parts with primary colors, and the second result at degree two for secondary-colored partitions, using the result of the first paper of this series. These results allow us to easily retrieve the Frenkel-Kac character formulas of level one standard modu…
Let $A$ be a subset of positive integers. By $A$-partition of $n$ we understand the representation of $n$ as a sum of elements from the set $A$. For given $i, n\in\N$, by $c_{A}(i,n)$ we denote the number of $A$-partitions of $n$ with exactly $i$ parts. In the paper we obtain several result concerning sign behaviour of the sequence $S_{A,k}(n)=\sum_{i=0}^{n}(-1)^{i}i^{k}c_{A}(i,n)$, where $k\in\N$ is fixed. In particular, we prove that for a broad class $\cal{A}$ of subsets of $\N_{+}$ we have that for each $A\in \cal{A}$ we have $(-1)^{n}S_{A,k}(n)\geq 0$ for each $n, k\in\N$.
This work concerns the semiclassical asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. We compute the leading term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \to 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov. The KP-Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to converge in the classical limit to the generating function of Pandharipande and Okounkov and, with suitable scaling, so d…
A connected partition is a partition of the vertices of a graph into sets that induce connected subgraphs. Such partitions naturally occur in many application areas such as road networks, and image processing. We consider Balanced Connected Partitions (BCP), where the two classical objectives for BCP are to maximize the weight of the smallest, or minimize the weight of the largest component. We study BCP on c-claw-free graphs, the class of graphs that do not have $K_{1,c}$ as an induced subgraph, and present efficient (c-1)-approximation algorithms for both objectives. In particular, due to th…
Ramanujan recorded five interesting q-series identities in a section that is not as systematically arranged as the other chapters of his second notebook. These five identities do not seem to have acquired enough attention. Recently, Dixit and the third author found a one-variable generalization of one of the aforementioned five identities. From their generalized identity, they were able to derive the last three of these q-series identities, but didn't establish the first two. In the present article, we derive a one-variable generalization of the main identity of Dixit and the third author from…
We use Gelfand-Tsetlin diagrams to write down the weight multiplicity function for the Lie algebra sl_k(C) (type A_{k-1}) as a single partition function. This allows us to apply known results about partition functions to derive interesting properties of the weight diagrams. We relate this description to that of the Duistermaat-Heckman measure from symplectic geometry, which gives a large-scale limit way to look at multiplicity diagrams. We also provide an explanation for why the weight polynomials in the boundary regions of the weight diagrams exhibit a number of linear factors. Using symplect…
For two collections of nonnegative and suitably normalised weights $\W=(\W_j)$ and $\V=(\V_{n,k})$, a probability distribution on the set of partitions of the set $\{1,...,n\}$ is defined by assigning to a generic partition $\{A_j, j\leq k\}$ the probability $\V_{n,k} \W_{|A_1|}... \W_{|A_k|}$, where $|A_j|$ is the number of elements of $A_j$. We impose constraints on the weights by assuming that the resulting random partitions $Π_n$ of $[n]$ are consistent as $n$ varies, meaning that they define an exchangeable partition of the set of all natural numbers. This implies that the weights $\W$ mu…
We study scaling limits of skew plane partitions with periodic weights under several boundary conditions. We compute the correlation kernel of the limiting point process in the bulk and near turning points on the frozen boundary. The turning points that appear in the homogeneous case split in our model into pairs of turning points macroscopically separated by a "semi-frozen" region. As a result the point process at a turning point is not the GUE minor process, but rather a pair of GUE minor processes, non-trivially correlated. We also study an intermediate regime when the weights are periodic …
We introduce a new generalisation of partitions, multi-grounded partitions, related to ground state paths indexed by dominant weights of Lie algebras. We use these to express characters of irreducible highest weight modules of Kac-Moody algebras of affine type as generating functions for multi-grounded partitions. This generalises the approach of our previous paper, where only irreducible highest weight modules with constant ground state paths were considered, to all ground state paths. As an application, we compute the characters of the level $1$ modules of the affine Lie algebras $A_{2n}^{(2…
We find zero-free regions in the complex plane at large |q| for the multivariate Tutte polynomial (also known in statistical mechanics as the Potts-model partition function) Z_G(q,w) of a graph G with general complex edge weights w = {w_e}. This generalizes a result of Sokal (cond-mat/9904146) that applies only within the complex antiferromagnetic regime |1+w_e| \le 1. Our proof uses the polymer-gas representation of the multivariate Tutte polynomial together with the Penrose identity.
We study probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of natural volume-and-trace weighted plane partitions and their continuous analogues. We prove asymptotic limit laws for the largest parts of these ensembles in terms of new and known hard- and soft-edge distributions of random matrix theory. As a corollary we obtain an asymptotic transition between Gumbel and Tracy--Widom GUE fluctuations for the largest part of such plane partitions, with the continuous Bessel kernel providing the interpolation. We interpret our results in terms of two natural models of directed last passage percolation (LPP):…
The partition function for quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers can be interpreted in terms of the energy distribution of a quantum Bose gas with vanishing fugacity. We compute the leading term of the partition function and the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers in the zero temperature limit $T \rightarrow 0$, as well as the next order corrections. The leading term is shown to reproduce the case of uniformly weighted Hurwitz numbers of Belyi curves. In particular, the KP or Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown in the limit to give the one f…
