Ramanujan recorded five interesting q-series identities in a section that is not as systematically arranged as the other chapters of his second notebook. These five identities do not seem to have acquired enough attention. Recently, Dixit and the third author found a one-variable generalization of one of the aforementioned five identities. From their generalized identity, they were able to derive the last three of these q-series identities, but didn't establish the first two. In the present article, we derive a one-variable generalization of the main identity of Dixit and the third author from which we successfully deduce all the five q-series identities of Ramanujan. In addition to this, we also establish a few interesting weighted partition identities from our generalized identity. In the mid 1980's, Bressoud and Subbarao found an interesting identity connecting the generalized divisor function with a weighted partition function, which they proved by means of a purely combinatorial argument. Quite surprisingly, we found an analytic proof for a generalization of the identity of Bressoud and Subbarao, starting from the fourth identity of the aforementioned five q-series identities of Ramanujan.
We show that, in many cases, there are infinitely many sets of partitions corresponding to a single analytical Rogers-Ramanujan type identity. This means that a single analytical Rogers-Ramanujan type identity implies the existence of bijections among infinitely many sets of partitions. We also give an explicit description of these infinite sets coming from the sum side of the analytical identity explaining how to interpret the sum side combinatorially as the generating function of the partitions considered. Moreover, we give a new infinite familiy of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities obtained …
We find two involutions on partitions that lead to partition identities for Ramanujan's third order mock theta functions $ϕ(-q)$ and $ψ(-q)$. We also give an involution for Fine's partition identity on the mock theta function f(q). The two classical identities of Ramanujan on third order mock theta functions are consequences of these partition identities. Our combinatorial constructions also apply to Andrews' generalizations of Ramanujan's identities.
We find involutions for three Rogers-Ramanujan-Gordon type identities obtained by Andrews on the generating functions for partitions with part difference and parity restrictions.
In this we paper we prove several new identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater type. These identities were found as the result of computer searches. The proofs involve a variety of techniques, including series-series identities, Bailey pairs, a theorem of Watson on basic hypergeometric series, generating functions and miscellaneous methods.
The celebrated Rogers-Ramanujan identities equate the number of integer partitions of $n$ ($n\in\mathbb N_0$) with parts congruent to $\pm 1 \pmod{5}$ (respectively $\pm 2 \pmod{5}$) and the number of partitions of $n$ with super-distinct parts (respectively super-distinct parts greater than $1$). In this paper, we establish companion identities to the Rogers-Ramanujan identities on the number of parts in all partitions of $n$ of the aforementioned types, in the spirit of earlier work by Andrews and Beck on a partition identity of Euler.
We report on findings of a variant of ${\texttt{IdentityFinder}}$ - a Maple program that was used by two of the authors to conjecture several new identities of Rogers-Ramanujan kind. In the present search, we modify the parametrization of the search space by taking into consideration several aspects of Lepowsky and Wilson's $Z$-algebraic mechanism and its variant by Meurman and Primc. We search for identities based on forbidding the appearance of "flat" partitions as sub-partitions. Several new identities of Rogers-Ramanujan-MacMahon type are found and proved.
Recently, Simon Plouffe has discovered a number of identities for the Riemann zeta function at odd integer values. These identities are obtained numerically and are inspired by a prototypical series for Apery's constant given by Ramanujan: $ζ(3)=\frac{7π^3}{180}-2\sum_{n=1}^\infty\frac{1}{n^3(e^{2πn}-1)}$ Such sums follow from a general relation given by Ramanujan, which is rediscovered and proved here using complex analytic techniques. The general relation is used to derive many of Plouffe's identities as corollaries. The resemblance of the general relation to the structure of theta functions…
This paper is concerned with a class of partition functions $a(n)$ introduced by Radu and defined in terms of eta-quotients. By utilizing the transformation laws of Newman, Schoeneberg and Robins, and Radu's algorithms, we present an algorithm to find Ramanujan-type identities for $a(mn+t)$. While this algorithm is not guaranteed to succeed, it applies to many cases. For example, we deduce a witness identity for $p(11n+6)$ with integer coefficients. Our algorithm also leads to Ramanujan-type identities for the overpartition functions $\overline{p}(5n+2)$ and $\overline{p}(5n+3)$ and Andrews--P…
It is known that $q$-orthogonal polynomials play an important role in the field of $q$-series and special functions. During studying Dyson's "favorite" identity of Rogers--Ramanujan type, Andrews pointed out that the classical orthogonal polynomials also have surprising applications in the world of $q$. By inserting Chebyshev polynomials of the third and the fourth kinds into Bailey pairs, Andrews derived a family of Rogers--Ramanujan type identities and also results related to mock theta functions and Hecke--type series. In this paper, by constructing a new Bailey pair involving Chebyshev pol…
We use the method of tiling to give elementary combinatorial proofs of some celebrated $q$-series identities, such as Jacobi triple product identity, Rogers-Ramanujan identities, and some identities of Rogers. We give a tiling proof of the q-binomial theorem and a tiling interpretation of the q-binomial coefficients. A new generalized $ k $-product $q$-series identity is also obtained by employing the `tiling-method', wherein the generating function of the set of all possible tilings of a rectangular board is computed in two different ways to obtain the desired $q$-series identity. Several new…
Here we consider the $q$-series coming from the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, \begin{equation*} R_ν(a,b;q)=\sum_{\substack{λ\\[1pt] λ_1\leq a}} q^{c|λ|} P_{2λ}\big(1,q,q^2,\dots;q^{2b+d}\big). \end{equation*} These series were defined by Griffin, Ono, and Warnaar in their work on the framework of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We devise a recursive method for computing the coefficients of these series when they arise within the Rogers-Ramanujan framework. Furthermore, we study the congruence properties of certain quotients and products of these series, generalizing the famous Ramanujan congru…
We prove a q-series identity that generalises Macdonald's A_{2n}^{(2)} eta-function identity and the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We conjecture our result to generalise even further to also include the Andrews-Gordon identities.
Eigenvectors of the discrete Fourier transform can be expressed using Ramanujan theta functions. New theta function identities, Ramanujan theta function identities, and generating functions for the quadratic numbers are a consequence.
Using Ramanujan's identities and the Weierstrass-Enneper representation of minimal surfaces and the analogue for Born-Infeld solitons, we derive further non-trivial identities.
We use an integral method to establish a number of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities involving double and triple sums. The key step for proving such identities is to find some infinite products whose integrals over suitable contours are still infinite products. The method used here is motivated by Rosengren's proof of the Kanade-Russell identities.
We highlight the role of q-series techniques in proving identities arising from knot theory. In particular, we prove Rogers-Ramanujan type identities for alternating knots as conjectured by Garoufalidis, Le and Zagier.
Recently, Rosengren utilized an integral method to prove a number of conjectural identities found by Kanade and Russell. Using this integral method, we give new proofs to some double sum identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type. These identities were earlier proved by approaches such as combinatorial arguments or by using $q$-difference equations. Our proofs are based on streamlined calculations, which relate these double sum identities to some known Rogers-Ramanujan type identities with single sums. Moreover, we prove a conjectural identity of Andrews and Uncu which was earlier confirmed by Chern.
In his lost notebook, Ramanujan listed 5 identities related to the false theta function $$f(q)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty (-1)^nq^{n(n+1)/2}.$$ A new combinatorial interpretation and proof of one of these identities is given. The methods of the proof allow for new multivariate generalizations of this identity. Additionally, the same technique can be used to obtained a combinatorial interpretation of another one of the identities.
We provide new proofs to five of Ramanujan's intriguing identities on false theta functions without using the Rogers-Fine identity and Bailey transforms.
We present q-series proofs of four identities involving sixth order mock theta functions from Ramanujan's lost notebook. We also show how Ramanujan's identities can be used to give a quick proof of four sixth order identities of Berndt and Chan.
Using a pair of two variable series-product identities recorded by Ramanujan in the lost notebook as inspiration, we find some new identities of similar type. Each identity immediately implies an infinite family of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, some of which are well-known identities from the literature. We also use these identities to derive some general identities for integer partitions.
An elliptic $BC_n$ generalization of the classical two parameter Bailey Lemma is proved, and a basic one parameter $BC_n$ Bailey Lemma is obtained as a limiting case. Several summation and transformation formulas associated with the root system $BC_n$ are proved as applications, including a $_6ϕ_5$ summation formula, a generalized Watson transformation and an unspecialized Rogers--Selberg identity. The last identity is specialized to give an infinite family of multilateral Rogers--Selberg identities. Standard determinant evaluations are then used to compute $B_n$ and $D_n$ generalizations of t…
We give a simple unified proof for all existing rational hypergeometric Ramanujan identities for $1/π$, and give a complete survey (without proof) of several generalizations: rational hypergeometric identities for $1/π^c$, Taylor expansions, upside-down formulas, and supercongruences.
It is shown that (two-variable generalizations of) more than half of Slater's list of 130 Rogers-Ramanujan identities (L. J. Slater, Further identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type, \emph{Proc. London Math Soc. (2)} \textbf{54} (1952), 147--167) can be easily derived using just three multiparameter Bailey pairs and their associated $q$-difference equations. As a bonus, new Rogers-Ramanujan type identities are found along with natural combinatorial interpretations for many of these identities.
The famous Rogers-Ramanujan and Andrews--Gordon identities are embedded in a doubly-infinite family of Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities labelled by positive integers m and n. For fixed m and n the product side corresponds to a specialised character of the affine Kac-Moody algebra A_{2n}^{(2)} at level m, and is expressed as a product of n^2 theta functions of modulus 2m+2n+1, or by level-rank duality, as a product of m^2 theta functions. Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities for even moduli, corresponding to the affine Lie algebras C_n^{(1)} and D_{n+1}^{(2)}, are also proven.
We derive two new generalizations of the Busche-Ramanujan identities involving the multiple Dirichlet convolution of arithmetic functions of several variables. The proofs use formal multiple Dirichlet series and properties of symmetric polynomials of several variables.
We prove, by the WZ-method, some hypergeometric identities which relate ten extended Ramanujan type series to simpler hypergeometric series. The identities we are going to prove are valid for all the values of a parameter $a$ when they are convergent. Sometimes, even if they do not converge, they are valid if we consider these identities as limits.
The Rogers-Ramanujan identities and various analogous identities (Gordon, Andrews-Bressoud, Capparelli, etc.) form a family of very deep identities concerned with integer partitions. These identities (written in generating function form) are typically of the form "product side" equals "sum side," with the product side enumerating partitions obeying certain congruence conditions and the sum side obeying certain initial conditions and difference conditions (along with possibly other restrictions). We use symbolic computation to generate various such sum sides and then use Euler's algorithm to se…
We find new hypergeometric identities which, in a certain aspect, are stron-ger than others of the same style found by the author in a previous paper. The identities in Section \ref{section-pi} are related to some Ramanujan-type series for $1/π$. We derive them by using WZ-pairs associated to some interesting formulas by Wenchang Chu. The identities we prove in Section \ref{section-pi2} are of the same style but related to Ramanujan-like series for $1/π^2$.
For the unrestricted partition function $p(n)$ for integers $n \geq 0$, it is known that $p(49n + 19) \equiv 0 \pmod{49}$, $p(49n + 33) \equiv 0 \pmod{49}$, and $p(49n + 40) \equiv 0 \pmod{49}$ for all $n \geq 0$. We find witness identities for these Ramanujan congruences.
We derive two general transformations for certain basic hypergeometric series from the recurrence formulae for the partial numerators and denominators of two $q$-continued fractions previously investigated by the authors. By then specializing certain free parameters in these transformations, and employing various identities of Rogers-Ramanujan type, we derive \emph{$m$-versions} of these identities. Some of the identities thus found are new, and some have been derived previously by other authors, using different methods. By applying certain transformations due to Watson, Heine and Ramanujan, w…
In this survey article, we present an expanded version of Lucy Slater's famous list of identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type, including identities of similar type, which were discovered after the publication of Slater's papers, and older identities (such as those in Ramanujan's lost notebook) which were not included in Slater's papers. We attempt to supply the earliest known reference for each identity. Also included are identities of false theta functions, along with their relationship to Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. We also describe several ways in which pairs/larger sets of identitie…
We prove some Lambert series which were stated by Gosper without proof or reference. As an application, we shall evaluate integrals involving Ramanujan theta function $ψ(q)$. Furthermore, motivated by Ramanujan's identities for $qψ^4(q^2)$ and $\fr{ψ^3(q)}{ψ(q^3)}$, we shall evaluate the squares of $qψ^4(q^2)$ and $\fr{ψ^3(q)}{ψ(q^3)}$ in terms of Lambert series.
We present proofs of two new families of sum-product identities arising from the cylindric partitions paradigm. Most of the presented expressions, the related sum-product identities, and the ingredients for the proofs were first conjectured by Kanade-Russell in the spirit of Andrews-Schilling-Warnaar identities of the $A_2$ Rogers-Ramanujan type. We follow the footsteps of Kanade-Russell while we alter the computations heavily to accomplish our goals.
We use Rankin-Cohen brackets for modular forms and quasimodular forms to give a different proof of the results obtained by D. Lanphier and D. Niebur on the van der Pol type identities for the Ramanujan's tau function. As consequences we obtain convolution sums and congruence relations involving the divisor functions.
We revisit old conjectures of Fermat and Euler regarding representation of integers by binary quadratic form x^2+5y^2. Making use of Ramanujan's_1ψ_1 summation formula we establish a new Lambert series identity for \sum_{n,m=-\infty}^{\infty} q^{n^2+5m^2}. Conjectures of Fermat and Euler are shown to follow easily from this new formula. But we don't stop there. Employing various formulas found in Ramanujan's notebooks and using a bit of ingenuity we obtaina collection of new Lambert series for certain infinite products associated with quadratic forms such as x^2+6y^2, 2x^2+3y^2, x^2+15y^2, 3x^…
In a handwritten manuscript published with his lost notebook, Ramanujan stated without proofs forty identities for the Rogers-Ramanujan functions. We observe that the functions that appear in Ramanujan's identities can be obtained from a Hecke action on a certain family of eta products. We establish further Hecke-type relations for these functions involving binary quadratic forms. Our observations enable us to find new identities for the Rogers-Ramanujan functions and also to use such identities in turn to find identities involving binary quadratic forms.
In 1914, Ramanujan gave a list of 17 identities expressing $1/π$ as linear combinations of values of hypergeometric functions at certain rational numbers. Since then, identities of similar nature have been discovered by many authors. Nowadays, one of the standard approaches to this kind of identities uses the theory of modular curves. In this paper, we will consider the case of Shimura curves and obtain Ramanujan-type formulas involving special values of hypergeometric functions and products of Gamma values. The product of Gamma values are related to periods of elliptic curves with complex mul…
We define an extension of the Ramanujan trigonometric function to arbitrary dimensions, and give the Dirichlet series generating function. The extension was first given by Eckford Cohen long ago. This links directly to visible point vector identities, and possibly to lattice sums in Physics and Chemistry presented by Baake et al. New generating functions and summations are given here, generalizing the Ramanujan function, Euler totient and the Jordan totient functions, based on visible lattice point ideas.
The two Rogers-Ramanujan $q$-series \[ \sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{q^{n(n+σ)}}{(1-q)\cdots (1-q^n)}, \] where $σ=0,1$, play many roles in mathematics and physics. By the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, they are essentially modular functions. Their quotient, the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, has the special property that its singular values are algebraic integral units. We find a framework which extends the Rogers-Ramanujan identities to doubly-infinite families of $q$-series identities. If $a\in\{1,2\}$ and $m,n\geq 1$, then we have \[ \sum_{\substack{λλ_1\leq m}} q^{a|λ|} P_{2λ}(1,q,q^2,\dot…
We study the head and tail of the colored Jones polynomial while focusing mainly on alternating links. Various ways to compute the colored Jones polynomial for a given link give rise to combinatorial identities for those power series. We further show that the head and tail functions only depend on the reduced checkerboard graphs of the knot diagram. Moreover the class of head and tail functions of prime alternating links forms a monoid.
We give simple proofs of Hecke-Rogers indefinite binary theta series identities for the two Ramanujan fifth order mock theta functions $χ_0(q)$ and $χ_1(q)$ and all three of Ramanujan's seventh order mock theta functions. We find that the coefficients of the three mock theta functions of order 7 are surprisingly related.
I present here a collection of formulas inspired from the Ramanujan Notebooks. These formulas were found using an experimental method based on three widely available symbolic computation programs: PARI-Gp, Maple and Mathematica. A new formula is presented for Zeta(5).
The asymptotic probability theory of conjugacy classes of the finite general linear and unitary groups leads to a probability measure on the set of all partitions of natural numbers. A simple method of understanding these measures in terms of Markov chains is given and compared with work on the uniform measure. Elementary probabilistic proofs of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities follow. As a corollary, the main case of Bailey's lemma is interpreted as finding eigenvectors of the transition matrix of the Markov chain. It is shown that the viewpoint of Markov chains extends to quivers.
