We find zero-free regions in the complex plane at large |q| for the multivariate Tutte polynomial (also known in statistical mechanics as the Potts-model partition function) Z_G(q,w) of a graph G with general complex edge weights w = {w_e}. This generalizes a result of Sokal (cond-mat/9904146) that applies only within the complex antiferromagnetic regime |1+w_e| \le 1. Our proof uses the polymer-gas representation of the multivariate Tutte polynomial together with the Penrose identity.
We prove some variants of the exponential formula and apply them to the multivariate Tutte polynomials (also known as Potts-model partition functions) of graphs. We also prove some further identities for the multivariate Tutte polynomial, which generalize an identity for counting connected graphs found by Riordan, Nijenhuis, Wilf and Kreweras and in more general form by Leroux and Gessel, and an identity for the inversion enumerator of trees found by Mallows, Riordan and Kreweras. Finally, we prove a generalization of Mobius inversion on the partition lattice.
The chromatic polynomial P_G(q) of a loopless graph G is known to be nonzero (with explicitly known sign) on the intervals (-\infty,0), (0,1) and (1,32/27]. Analogous theorems hold for the flow polynomial of bridgeless graphs and for the characteristic polynomial of loopless matroids. Here we exhibit all these results as special cases of more general theorems on real zero-free regions of the multivariate Tutte polynomial Z_G(q,v). The Tutte polynomial of a graph, or equivalently the $q$-state Potts model partition function, is a two-variable polynomial graph invariant of considerable importance in both combinatorics and statistical physics. The computation of this invariant for a graph is NP-hard in general. In this paper, based on their self-similar structures, we recursively describe the Tutte polynomials of an infinite family of scale-free lattices. Furthermore, we give some exact analytical expressions of the Tutte polynomial for several special points at $(X,Y)$-plane.
We consider tiling rectangles of size 4m x 4n by T-shaped tetrominoes. Each tile is assigned a weight that depends on its orientation and position on the lattice. For a particular choice of the weights, the generating function of tilings is shown to be the evaluation of the multivariate Tutte polynomial Z\_G(Q,v) (known also to physicists as the partition function of the Q-state Potts model) on an (m-1) x (n-1) rectangle G, where the parameter Q and the edge weights v can take arbitrary values depending on the tile weights.
We prove that the Hessians of nonzero partial derivatives of the (homogenous) multivariate Tutte polynomial of any matroid have exactly one positive eigenvalue on the positive orthant when $0<q\leq 1$. Consequences are proofs of the strongest conjecture of Mason and negative dependence properties for $q$-state Potts model partition functions.
The n-sum graph Negami's splitting formula for the Tutte polynomial is not valid in the region $(x-1)(y-1)=q$ for $q=1,2,\ldots n-1$ with the additional region $y=1$ if $n>3$. This region corresponds to (up to prefactors and change of variables) the Ising model, the $q$-state Potts model, the number of spanning forest generator and particularizations of these. We show splitting formulas for these specializations.

This paper deals with the location of the complex zeros of the Tutte polynomial for a class of self-dual graphs. For this class of graphs, as the form of the eigenvalues is known, the regions of the complex plane can be focused on the sets where there is only one dominant eigenvalue in particular containing the positive half plane. We study the complexity of approximating the partition function of the $q$-state Potts model and the closely related Tutte polynomial for complex values of the underlying parameters. Apart from the classical connections with quantum computing and phase transitions in statistical physics, recent work in approximate counting has shown that the behaviour in the complex plane, and more precisely the location of zeros, is strongly connected with the complexity of the approximation problem, even for positive real-valued parameters. We consider a specialization $Y_M(q,t)$ of the Tutte polynomial of a matroid $M$ which is inspired by analogy with the Potts model from statistical mechanics. The only information lost in this specialization is the number of loops of $M$. We show that the coefficients of $Y_M(1-p,t)$ are very simply related to the ranks of the Whitney homology groups of the opposite partial orders of the independent set complexes of the duals of the truncations of $M$. In particular, we obtain a new homological interpretation for the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a matroid.
Tutte proved that if $G_{pt}$ is a planar triangulation and $P(G_{pt},q)$ is its chromatic polynomial, then $|P(G_{pt},τ+1)| \le (τ-1)^{n-5}$, where $τ=(1+\sqrt{5} \,)/2$ and $n$ is the number of vertices in $G_{pt}$. Here we study the ratio $r(G_{pt})=|P(G_{pt},τ+1)|/(τ-1)^{n-5}$ for a variety of planar triangulations. We introduce and study the notion of the $G$-Tutte polynomial for a list $\mathcal{A}$ of elements in a finitely generated abelian group $Γ$ and an abelian group $G$, which is defined by counting the number of homomorphisms from associated finite abelian groups to $G$. We study the partition function of Potts model in an external (magnetic) field, and its connections with the zero-field Potts model partition function. Using a deletion-contraction formulation for the partition function Z for this model, we show that it can be expanded in terms of the zero-field partition function. We also show that Z can be written as a sum over the spanning trees, and the spanning forests, of a graph G. Our results extend to Z the well-known spanning tree expansion for the zero-field partition function that arises though its connections with the Tutte polynomial.
We consider the Potts model in a magnetic field on an arbitrary graph $G$. Using a formula of F. Y. Wu for the partition function $Z$ of this model as a sum over spanning subgraphs of $G$, we prove some properties of $Z$ concerning factorization, monotonicity, and zeros. A generalization of the Tutte polynomial is presented that corresponds to this partition function. In this context we formulate and discuss two weighted graph-coloring problems. We also give a general structural result for $Z$ for cyclic strip graphs.
In this note we study some of the properties of the generating polynomial for homomorphisms from a graph to at complete weighted graph on $q$ vertices. We discuss how this polynomial relates to a long list of other well known graph polynomials and the partition functions for different spin models, many of which are specialisations of the homomorphism polynomial. We introduce a polynomial invariant of graphs on surfaces, $P_G$, generalizing the classical Tutte polynomial. Topological duality on surfaces gives rise to a natural duality result for $P_G$, analogous to the duality for the Tutte polynomial of planar graphs. This property is important from the perspective of statistical mechanics, where the Tutte polynomial is known as the partition function of the Potts model. I show that there exist universal constants $C(r) < \infty$ such that, for all loopless graphs $G$ of maximum degree $\le r$, the zeros (real or complex) of the chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$ lie in the disc $|q| < C(r)$. Furthermore, $C(r) \le 7.963906... r$. This result is a corollary of a more general result on the zeros of the Potts-model partition function $Z_G(q, {v_e})$ in the complex antiferromagnetic regime $|1 + v_e| \le 1$. I show that the zeros of the chromatic polynomials P_G(q) for the generalized theta graphs Θ^{(s,p)} are, taken together, dense in the whole complex plane with the possible exception of the disc |q-1| < 1. The same holds for their dichromatic polynomials (alias Tutte polynomials, alias Potts-model partition functions) Z_G(q,v) outside the disc |q+v| < |v|. An immediate corollary is that the chromatic zeros of not-necessarily-planar graphs are dense in the whole complex plane.
