We construct certain spectral triples in the sense of A. ~Connes and H. Moscovici (``The local index formula in noncommutative geometry'' {\it Geom. Funct. Anal.}, 5(2):174--243, 1995) that is transversally elliptic but not necessarily elliptic. We prove that these spectral triples satisfie the conditions which ensure the Connes-Moscovici local index formula applies.
We show that such a spectral triple has discrete dimensional spectrum. A notable feature of the spectral triple is that its corresponding zeta functions have multiple poles, while in the classical elliptic cases only simple poles appear for the zeta functions.
We show that the multiplicities of the poles of the zeta functions have an upper bound, which is the sum of dimensions of the base manifold and the acting compact Lie group. Moreover for our spectral triple the Connes-Moscovici local index formula involves only local transverse symbol of the operator.
In 1996, Berline and Vergne gave a cohomological formula for the index of a transversally elliptic operator. In this paper we propose a new point of view where the cohomological formulae make use of equivariant Chern characters with generalized coefficients and with compact suppport. This kind of Chern characters was studied by the authors in a previous paper (see arXiv:0801.2822).
Let $G$ be a connected compact Lie group. We study the heat operator of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator. After we review the spectral properties of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator, we define the character, that is a distribution on $G$ generalizing the trace of the heat operator to the $G$-equivariant case. The main theorem of this paper gives the estimate of $f_α(t)$, which essentially determines the convergence of the character.
We prove a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications, we obtain an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years.
The main result of the paper is Egorov's theorem for transversally elliptic operators on compact foliated manifolds. This theorem is applied to describe the noncommutative geodesic flow in noncommutative geometry of Riemannian foliations.
In this expository paper, we explain a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications is an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years. This paper summarizes the work in the papers arXiv:1005.3845 [math.DG] and arXiv:1008.1757 [math.DG].
Let G be a connected compact Lie group acting on a manifold M and let D be a transversally elliptic operator on M. The multiplicity of the index of D is a function on the set of irreducible representations of G. Let T be a maximal torus of G with Lie algebra Lie(T). We construct a finite number of piecewise polynomial functions on the dual vector space Lie(T)*, and give a formula for the multiplicity in term of these functions. The main new concept is the formal equivariant $\hat A$ class.
Let G be a torus acting linearly on a complex vector space M, and let X be the list of weights of G in M. We determine the equivariant K-theory of the open subset of M consisting of points with finite stabilizers. We identify it to the space DM(X) of functions on the lattice of weights of G, satisfying the cocircuit difference equations associated to X, introduced by Dahmen--Micchelli in the context of the theory of splines in order to study vector partition functions. This allows us to determine the range of the index map from G-transversally elliptic operators on M to generalized functions o…
Mathai, Melrose, and Singer introduced the notion of projective elliptic operators on manifolds equipped with an Azumaya bundle. In this note we compute the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators that are the pullback of projective elliptic operators on the trivialization of the Azumaya bundle. It encompasses the fractional index formula of projective elliptic operator by Mathai-Melrose-Singer.
This work is a continuation of our previous paper arXiv:1812.06473 where we have constructed ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on 4D manifolds with a Killing vector field with isolated fixed points. In this work we expand on the mathematical aspects of the theory, with a particular focus on its nature as a cohomological field theory. The well-known Donaldson-Witten theory is a twisted version of ${\cal N}=2$ SYM and can also be constructed using the Atiyah-Jeffrey construction. This theory is concerned with the moduli space of anti-self-dual gauge connections, with a deformation th…
An $f$-structure on a manifold $M$ is an endomorphism field $ϕ\inΓ(M,\End(TM))$ such that $ϕ^3+ϕ=0$. Any $f$-structure $ϕ$ determines an almost CR structure $E_{1,0}\subset T_\C M$ given by the $+i$-eigenbundle of $ϕ$. Using a compatible metric $g$ and connection $\nabla$ on $M$, we construct an odd first-order differential operator $D$, acting on sections of $§=ΛE_{0,1}^*$, whose principal symbol is of the type considered in arXiv:0810.0338. In the special case of a CR-integrable almost $§$-structure, we show that when $\nabla$ is the generalized Tanaka-Webster connection of Lotta and Pastore…
We study the index theory of a class of perturbed Dirac operators on non-compact manifolds of the form $\mathsf{D}+\mathrm{i}\mathsf{c}(X)$, where $\mathsf{c}(X)$ is a Clifford multiplication operator by an orbital vector field with respect to the action of a compact Lie group. Our main result is that the index class of such an operator factors as a KK-product of certain KK-theory classes defined by $\mathsf{D}$ and $X$. As a corollary we obtain the excision and cobordism-invariance properties first established by Braverman. An index theorem of Braverman relates the index of $\mathsf{D}+\mathr…
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
We introduce a new class of natural, explicitly defined, transversally elliptic differential operators over manifolds with compact group actions. Under certain assumptions, the symbols of these operators generate all the possible values of the equivariant index. We also show that the components of the representation-valued equivariant index coincide with those of an elliptic operator constructed from the original data.
We study the transversal wave equation on a compact Riemannian foliated manifold. As applications, we get an Egorov's type theorem for transversally elliptic operators, state a relationship between the singularities of the Fourier transform of the spectrum distribution function of a transversally elliptic operator and the corresponding transversal bicharacteristic flow and give a description of the noncommutative geodesic flow in transversal geometry of Riemannian foliations.
We explain how the distributional index of a transversally elliptic operator on a principal G-manifold P that is obtained by lifting a Dirac operator on P/G can serve as a link between the Duflo isomorphism and Chern-Weil forms.
In this expository article, we consider first order elliptic differential operators acting on smooth vector bundles over compact manifolds, and certain invariants derived from the analysis of these operators, namely the eta invariant} and the equivariant index. Many researchers have previously considered these invariants before. What makes this work different is that we are evaluating integer-valued indices corresponding to multiplicities of group representations, and our eta invariant is a number dependent on the entire group at once. Moreover, the techniques of proof and formulas obtained ar…
We will discuss the equivariant cohomology of a manifold endowed with the action of a Lie group. Localization formulae for equivariant integrals are explained by a vanishing theorem for equivariant cohomology with generalized coefficients. We then give applications to integration of characteristic classes on symplectic quotients and to indices of transversally elliptic operators. In particular, we state a conjecture for the index of a transversally elliptic operator linked to a Hamiltonian action. In the last part, we describe algorithms for numerical computations of values of multivariate spl…
In this note the fractional analytic index, for a projective elliptic operator associated to an Azumaya bundle, of DG/0402329 is related to the equivariant index of Atiyah and Singer for an associated transversally elliptic operator.
From 1980s, it is an open problem of proposing cohomologic formula for the basic index of a transversally elliptic basic differential operator on a vector bundle over a foliated manifold. In 1990s, El Kacimi-Alaoui has proprosed to use the Molino theory for study this index. Molino has proved that to every transversally oriented Riemannien foliation, we can associate a manifold, called basique manifold, which is équiped with an action of orthogonal group, El Kacimi-Alaoui has shown how to associate a transversally elliptic basic differential operator an operator on a vector bundle, called usef…
Egorov's theorem for transversally elliptic operators, acting on sections of a vector bundle over a compact foliated manifold, is proved. This theorem relates the quantum evolution of transverse pseudodifferential operators determined by a first order transversally elliptic operator with the (classical) evolution of its symbols determined by the parallel transport along the orbits of the associated transverse bicharacteristic flow. For a particular case of a transverse Dirac operator, the transverse bicharacteristic flow is shown to be given by the transverse geodesic flow and the parallel tra…
We develop some pluripotential theoretic techniques for the transversally holomorphic foliation of a Sasakian manifold. We prove the convexity of the K-energy along weak geodesics for Sasakian manifolds. This implies that the K-energy is bounded below if a constant scalar curvature structure exists with those metrics minimizing it. More generally, a relative version of the K-energy is convex, and bounded below if there exists a Sasaki-extremal metric, providing an important necessary condition for Sasaki-extremal metrics. Another application is a proof of the uniqueness of Sasaki-extremal metr…
This paper gives a survey of the index theory of tangentially elliptic and transversally elliptic operators on foliated manifolds as well as of related notions and results in non-commutative geometry.
We generalize the transgression formula for the eta form of Bismut, Cheeger and Berline, Getzler, Vergne for vertical Dirac operators on a fibre bundle with odd dimensional fibres where the Dirac operators have locally at most one eigenvalue of multiplicity one crossing zero transversally.
Given an elliptic action of a compact Lie group $G$ on a co-oriented contact manifold $(M,E)$ one obtains two naturally associated objects: A $G$-transversally elliptic operator $\dirac$, and an equivariant differential form with generalised coefficients $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ defined in terms of a choice of contact form on $M$. We explain how the form $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ is natural with respect to the contact structure, and give a formula for the equivariant index of $\dirac$ involving $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$. A key tool is the Chern character with compact support developed by Paradan-Vergne \cite{PV1,…
M. F. Atiyah proved that the index of a transversally elliptic operator relative to a free action can be computed by using indices of elliptic operators on the orbit manifold. In this paper, we derive an explicit formula for the transversal indices on S^1-bundles over complex projective spaces. Using this explicit formula and the index map, we prove Lefschetz formula for the n-dimensional complex projective space with the canonical action of T^{n + 1}.
In these survey lectures, we investigate the geometric and analytic properties of transverse Dirac operators. In particular, we define a transverse Dirac operator associated to a distribution that is essentially self-adjoint (Prokhorenkov-R result). We describe the Habib-R Theorem showing that the invariance of the spectrum of a basic Dirac operator on a Riemannian foliation. The Bruening-Kamber-R theorems give Atiyah-Singer type formulas for the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators on G-manifolds and the index of basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations. These notes con…
In this paper we consider a singular elliptic equation involving the GJMS (Graham-Jenne-Mason-Sparling) operator of order k on n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with 2k<n. Mutiplicity and nonexistence results are established.
We prove the Reilly formula for a class of elliptic divergence differential operator $L_Au=div(A\nabla u)$, where $A$ is a (1,1)-Codazzi tensor field. Then we get some estimates for the first positive eigenvalue of the operator.
This is an expository paper which gives a proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic operators. Specifcally, we compute the geometric K-cycle that corresponds to the analytic K-cycle determined by the operator. This paper and its companion ("K-homology and index theory II: Dirac Operators") was written to clear up basic points about index theory that are generally accepted as valid, but for which no proof has been published. Some of these points are needed for the solution of the Heisenberg-elliptic index problem in our paper "K-homology and index theory on contact manifolds" Acta. …
In this paper, we study eigenvalue of linear fourth order elliptic operators in divergence form with Dirichlet boundary condition on a bounded domain in a compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary (possibly empty) and find a general inequality for them. As an application, by using this inequality, we study eigenvalues of this operator on compact domains of complete submanifolds in a Euclidean space.
An elliptic theory is constructed for operators acting in subspaces defined via odd pseudodifferential projections. Subspaces of this type arise as Calderon subspaces for first order elliptic differential operators on manifolds with boundary, or as spectral subspaces for self-adjoint elliptic differential operators of odd order. Index formulas are obtained for operators in odd subspaces on closed manifolds and for general boundary value problems. We prove that the eta-invariant of operators of odd order on even-dimesional manifolds is a dyadic rational number.
In this paper we introduce and study a new Kelvin-type transform in the anisotropic setting. In particular, we deal with semilinear and quasilinear anisotropic elliptic problems in the entire space.
The purpose of this note is to extend the results of V. Guillemin on elliptic self-adjoint pseudodifferential operators of order one, from operators defined on smooth functions on a closed manifold to operators defined on smooth sections in a vector bundle of Hilbert modules of finite type over a finite von Neumann algebra.
We present some applications of ideas from partial differential equations and differential geometry to the study of difference equations on infinite graphs. All operators that we consider are examples of "elliptic operators" as defined by Y. Colin de Verdiere. For such operators, we discuss analogs of inequalities of Cheeger and Harnack and of the maximum principle (in both elliptic and parabolic versions), and apply them to study spectral theory, the ground state and the heat semigroup associated to these operators.
The purpose of this note is to provide a short cut presentation of a Mayer-Vietoris formula due to Burghelea-Friedlander-Kappeler for the regularized determinant in the case of elliptic operators of Laplace Beltrami type in the form typically needed in applications to torsion.
We study boundary value problems for first-order elliptic differential operators on manifolds with compact boundary. The adapted boundary operator need not be selfadjoint and the boundary condition need not be pseudo-local. We show the equivalence of various characterisations of elliptic boundary conditions and demonstrate how the boundary conditions traditionally considered in the literature fit in our framework. The regularity of the solutions up to the boundary is proven. We show that imposing elliptic boundary conditions yields a Fredholm operator if the manifold is compact. We provide exa…
The relative index theorem is proved for general first-order elliptic operators that are complete and coercive at infinity over measured manifolds. This extends the original result by Gromov-Lawson for generalised Dirac operators as well as the result of Bär-Ballmann for Dirac-type operators. The theorem is seen through the point of view of boundary value problems, using the graphical decomposition of elliptically regular boundary conditions for general first-order elliptic operators due to Bär-Bandara. Splitting, decomposition and the Phi-relative index theorem are proved on route to the rela…
We construct bundles of modules of vertex operator algebras, and prove the rigidity and vanishing theorem for the Dirac operator on loop space twisted by such bundles. This result generalizes many previous results.
