In 1996, Berline and Vergne gave a cohomological formula for the index of a transversally elliptic operator. In this paper we propose a new point of view where the cohomological formulae make use of equivariant Chern characters with generalized coefficients and with compact suppport. This kind of Chern characters was studied by the authors in a previous paper (see arXiv:0801.2822).
We construct certain spectral triples in the sense of A. ~Connes and H. Moscovici (``The local index formula in noncommutative geometry'' {\it Geom. Funct. Anal.}, 5(2):174--243, 1995) that is transversally elliptic but not necessarily elliptic. We prove that these spectral triples satisfie the conditions which ensure the Connes-Moscovici local index formula applies. We show that such a spectral triple has discrete dimensional spectrum. A notable feature of the spectral triple is that its corresponding zeta functions have multiple poles, while in the classical elliptic cases only simple poles …
Let $G$ be a connected compact Lie group. We study the heat operator of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator. After we review the spectral properties of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator, we define the character, that is a distribution on $G$ generalizing the trace of the heat operator to the $G$-equivariant case. The main theorem of this paper gives the estimate of $f_α(t)$, which essentially determines the convergence of the character.
We prove a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications, we obtain an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years.
The main result of the paper is Egorov's theorem for transversally elliptic operators on compact foliated manifolds. This theorem is applied to describe the noncommutative geodesic flow in noncommutative geometry of Riemannian foliations.
In this expository paper, we explain a formula for the multiplicities of the index of an equivariant transversally elliptic operator on a $G$-manifold. The formula is a sum of integrals over blowups of the strata of the group action and also involves eta invariants of associated elliptic operators. Among the applications is an index formula for basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations, a problem that was open for many years. This paper summarizes the work in the papers arXiv:1005.3845 [math.DG] and arXiv:1008.1757 [math.DG].
Let G be a connected compact Lie group acting on a manifold M and let D be a transversally elliptic operator on M. The multiplicity of the index of D is a function on the set of irreducible representations of G. Let T be a maximal torus of G with Lie algebra Lie(T). We construct a finite number of piecewise polynomial functions on the dual vector space Lie(T)*, and give a formula for the multiplicity in term of these functions. The main new concept is the formal equivariant $\hat A$ class.
Let G be a torus acting linearly on a complex vector space M, and let X be the list of weights of G in M. We determine the equivariant K-theory of the open subset of M consisting of points with finite stabilizers. We identify it to the space DM(X) of functions on the lattice of weights of G, satisfying the cocircuit difference equations associated to X, introduced by Dahmen--Micchelli in the context of the theory of splines in order to study vector partition functions. This allows us to determine the range of the index map from G-transversally elliptic operators on M to generalized functions o…
Mathai, Melrose, and Singer introduced the notion of projective elliptic operators on manifolds equipped with an Azumaya bundle. In this note we compute the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators that are the pullback of projective elliptic operators on the trivialization of the Azumaya bundle. It encompasses the fractional index formula of projective elliptic operator by Mathai-Melrose-Singer.
This work is a continuation of our previous paper arXiv:1812.06473 where we have constructed ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on 4D manifolds with a Killing vector field with isolated fixed points. In this work we expand on the mathematical aspects of the theory, with a particular focus on its nature as a cohomological field theory. The well-known Donaldson-Witten theory is a twisted version of ${\cal N}=2$ SYM and can also be constructed using the Atiyah-Jeffrey construction. This theory is concerned with the moduli space of anti-self-dual gauge connections, with a deformation th…
We study the index theory of a class of perturbed Dirac operators on non-compact manifolds of the form $\mathsf{D}+\mathrm{i}\mathsf{c}(X)$, where $\mathsf{c}(X)$ is a Clifford multiplication operator by an orbital vector field with respect to the action of a compact Lie group. Our main result is that the index class of such an operator factors as a KK-product of certain KK-theory classes defined by $\mathsf{D}$ and $X$. As a corollary we obtain the excision and cobordism-invariance properties first established by Braverman. An index theorem of Braverman relates the index of $\mathsf{D}+\mathr…
An $f$-structure on a manifold $M$ is an endomorphism field $ϕ\inΓ(M,\End(TM))$ such that $ϕ^3+ϕ=0$. Any $f$-structure $ϕ$ determines an almost CR structure $E_{1,0}\subset T_\C M$ given by the $+i$-eigenbundle of $ϕ$. Using a compatible metric $g$ and connection $\nabla$ on $M$, we construct an odd first-order differential operator $D$, acting on sections of $§=ΛE_{0,1}^*$, whose principal symbol is of the type considered in arXiv:0810.0338. In the special case of a CR-integrable almost $§$-structure, we show that when $\nabla$ is the generalized Tanaka-Webster connection of Lotta and Pastore…
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
We introduce a new class of natural, explicitly defined, transversally elliptic differential operators over manifolds with compact group actions. Under certain assumptions, the symbols of these operators generate all the possible values of the equivariant index. We also show that the components of the representation-valued equivariant index coincide with those of an elliptic operator constructed from the original data.
We study the transversal wave equation on a compact Riemannian foliated manifold. As applications, we get an Egorov's type theorem for transversally elliptic operators, state a relationship between the singularities of the Fourier transform of the spectrum distribution function of a transversally elliptic operator and the corresponding transversal bicharacteristic flow and give a description of the noncommutative geodesic flow in transversal geometry of Riemannian foliations.
We explain how the distributional index of a transversally elliptic operator on a principal G-manifold P that is obtained by lifting a Dirac operator on P/G can serve as a link between the Duflo isomorphism and Chern-Weil forms.
In this expository article, we consider first order elliptic differential operators acting on smooth vector bundles over compact manifolds, and certain invariants derived from the analysis of these operators, namely the eta invariant} and the equivariant index. Many researchers have previously considered these invariants before. What makes this work different is that we are evaluating integer-valued indices corresponding to multiplicities of group representations, and our eta invariant is a number dependent on the entire group at once. Moreover, the techniques of proof and formulas obtained ar…
We will discuss the equivariant cohomology of a manifold endowed with the action of a Lie group. Localization formulae for equivariant integrals are explained by a vanishing theorem for equivariant cohomology with generalized coefficients. We then give applications to integration of characteristic classes on symplectic quotients and to indices of transversally elliptic operators. In particular, we state a conjecture for the index of a transversally elliptic operator linked to a Hamiltonian action. In the last part, we describe algorithms for numerical computations of values of multivariate spl…
In this note the fractional analytic index, for a projective elliptic operator associated to an Azumaya bundle, of DG/0402329 is related to the equivariant index of Atiyah and Singer for an associated transversally elliptic operator.
From 1980s, it is an open problem of proposing cohomologic formula for the basic index of a transversally elliptic basic differential operator on a vector bundle over a foliated manifold. In 1990s, El Kacimi-Alaoui has proprosed to use the Molino theory for study this index. Molino has proved that to every transversally oriented Riemannien foliation, we can associate a manifold, called basique manifold, which is équiped with an action of orthogonal group, El Kacimi-Alaoui has shown how to associate a transversally elliptic basic differential operator an operator on a vector bundle, called usef…
We generalize the transgression formula for the eta form of Bismut, Cheeger and Berline, Getzler, Vergne for vertical Dirac operators on a fibre bundle with odd dimensional fibres where the Dirac operators have locally at most one eigenvalue of multiplicity one crossing zero transversally.
Egorov's theorem for transversally elliptic operators, acting on sections of a vector bundle over a compact foliated manifold, is proved. This theorem relates the quantum evolution of transverse pseudodifferential operators determined by a first order transversally elliptic operator with the (classical) evolution of its symbols determined by the parallel transport along the orbits of the associated transverse bicharacteristic flow. For a particular case of a transverse Dirac operator, the transverse bicharacteristic flow is shown to be given by the transverse geodesic flow and the parallel tra…
This paper gives a survey of the index theory of tangentially elliptic and transversally elliptic operators on foliated manifolds as well as of related notions and results in non-commutative geometry.
We generalize Roe's index theorem for graded generalized Dirac operators on amenable manifolds to multigraded elliptic uniform pseudodifferential operators. The generalization will follow from a local index theorem that is valid on any manifold of bounded geometry. This local formula incorporates the uniform estimates present in the definition of uniform pseudodifferential operators.
Given an elliptic action of a compact Lie group $G$ on a co-oriented contact manifold $(M,E)$ one obtains two naturally associated objects: A $G$-transversally elliptic operator $\dirac$, and an equivariant differential form with generalised coefficients $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ defined in terms of a choice of contact form on $M$. We explain how the form $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$ is natural with respect to the contact structure, and give a formula for the equivariant index of $\dirac$ involving $\mathcal{J}(E,X)$. A key tool is the Chern character with compact support developed by Paradan-Vergne \cite{PV1,…
M. F. Atiyah proved that the index of a transversally elliptic operator relative to a free action can be computed by using indices of elliptic operators on the orbit manifold. In this paper, we derive an explicit formula for the transversal indices on S^1-bundles over complex projective spaces. Using this explicit formula and the index map, we prove Lefschetz formula for the n-dimensional complex projective space with the canonical action of T^{n + 1}.
In this note, we prove an index theorem on Galois covering for Heisenberg elliptic differential operators, which is not elliptic, analogous to Atiyah's $Γ$-index theorem. This note also contains an example of Heisenberg differential operators with non-trivial $Γ$-index.
These notes form the next episode in a series of articles dedicated to a detailed proof of a cohomological index formula for transversally elliptic pseudo-differential operators and applications. The first two chapters are already available as math.DG/0702575 and arXiv:0711.3898. In this episode, we construct the relative equivariant Chern character of a morphism of vector bundles, localized by a one form, and we prove a multiplicativity property of this generalized Chern character
These notes are the first chapter of a monograph, dedicated to a detailed proof of the equivariant index theorem for transversally elliptic operators. In this preliminary chapter, we prove a certain number of natural relations in equivariant cohomology. These relations include the Thom isomorphism in equivariant cohomology, the multiplicativity of the relative Chern characters, and the Riemann-Roch relation between the relative Chern character of the Bott symbol and of the relative Thom class.
We consider a consider the case of a compact manifold M, together with the following data: the action of a compact Lie group H and a smooth H-invariant distribution E, such that the H-orbits are transverse to E. These data determine a natural equivariant differential form with generalized coefficients J(E,X) whose properties we describe. When E is equipped with a complex structure, we define a class of symbol mappings in terms of the resulting almost-CR structure that are H-transversally elliptic whenever the action of H is transverse to E. We determine a formula for the H-equivariant index of…
Using recently introduced Debord-Skandalis Blup's groupoids we study index theory for a compact foliated manifold with boundary inducing a foliation in its boundary. For this we consider first a blup groupoid whose Lie algebroid has sections consisting of vector fields tangent to the leaves in the interior and tangent to the leaves of the foliation in the boundary. In particular the holonomy $b$-groupoid allows us to consider the appropriate pseudodifferential calculus and the appropriate index problems. We further use the blup groupoids as the one above, and in particular its functoriality pr…
In these survey lectures, we investigate the geometric and analytic properties of transverse Dirac operators. In particular, we define a transverse Dirac operator associated to a distribution that is essentially self-adjoint (Prokhorenkov-R result). We describe the Habib-R Theorem showing that the invariance of the spectrum of a basic Dirac operator on a Riemannian foliation. The Bruening-Kamber-R theorems give Atiyah-Singer type formulas for the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators on G-manifolds and the index of basic Dirac operators on Riemannian foliations. These notes con…
This is an expository paper which gives a proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for elliptic operators. Specifcally, we compute the geometric K-cycle that corresponds to the analytic K-cycle determined by the operator. This paper and its companion ("K-homology and index theory II: Dirac Operators") was written to clear up basic points about index theory that are generally accepted as valid, but for which no proof has been published. Some of these points are needed for the solution of the Heisenberg-elliptic index problem in our paper "K-homology and index theory on contact manifolds" Acta. …
An index theory for projective families of elliptic pseudodifferential operators is developed. The topological and the analytic index of such a family both take values in twisted K-theory of the parametrizing space, X. The main result is the equality of these two notions of index when the twisting class is in the torsion subgroup of H^3(X;Z). The Chern character of the index class is then computed.
An index theory for projective families of elliptic pseudodifferential operators is developed when the twisting, i.e. Dixmier-Douady, class is decomposable. One of the features of this special case is that the corresponding Azumaya bundle can be realized in terms of smoothing operators. The topological and the analytic index of a projective family of elliptic operators both take values in the twisted K-theory of the parameterizing space. The main result is the equality of these two notions of index. The twisted Chern character of the index class is then computed by a variant of Chern-Weil theo…
The relative index theorem is proved for general first-order elliptic operators that are complete and coercive at infinity over measured manifolds. This extends the original result by Gromov-Lawson for generalised Dirac operators as well as the result of Bär-Ballmann for Dirac-type operators. The theorem is seen through the point of view of boundary value problems, using the graphical decomposition of elliptically regular boundary conditions for general first-order elliptic operators due to Bär-Bandara. Splitting, decomposition and the Phi-relative index theorem are proved on route to the rela…
We develop a categorical index calculus for elliptic symbol families. The categorified index problems we consider are a secondary version of the traditional problem of expressing the index class in K-theory in terms of differential-topological data. They include orientation problems for moduli spaces as well as similar problems for skew-adjoint and self-adjoint operators. The main result of this paper is an excision principle which allows the comparison of categorified index problems on different manifolds. Excision is a powerful technique for actually solving the orientation problem; applicat…
In previous papers (arxiv:math/0612370 and arxiv:0909.1342) we defined the C*-algebra and the longitudinal pseudodifferential calculus of any singular foliation (M,F). Here we construct the analytic index of an elliptic operator as a KK-theory element, and prove that the same element can be obtained from an "adiabatic foliation" TF on $M \times \R$, which we introduce here.
We study elliptic theory on manifolds with boundary represented as a covering space. Firstly, we consider boundary value problems, where the boundary conditions are allowed to mix the values of functions in the fibers of the covering. We show that elliptic elements define Fredholm operators and prove an index formula. For the identity covering, our formula reduces to the Atiyah-Bott index formula for classical boundary value problems. Secondly, we consider Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary value problems for operators adapted to the covering. We show that the corresponding symbols have a natural h…
We generalise the semi-Riemannian Morse index theorem to elliptic systems of partial differential equations on star-shaped domains. Moreover, we apply our theorem to bifurcation from a branch of trivial solutions of semilinear systems, where the bifurcation parameter is introduced by shrinking the domain to a point. This extends recent results of the authors for scalar equations.
We study differential operators, whose coefficients define noncommutative algebras. As algebra of coefficients, we consider crossed products, corresponding to action of a discrete group on a smooth manifold. We give index formulas for Euler, signature and Dirac operators twisted by projections over the crossed product. Index of Connes operators on the noncommutative torus is computed.
We present a cocycle model for elliptic cohomology with complex coefficients in which methods from 2-dimensional quantum field theory can be used to rigorously construct cocycles. For example, quantizing a theory of vector bundle-valued fermions yields a cocycle representative of the elliptic Thom class. This constructs the complexified string orientation of elliptic cohomology, which determines a pushfoward for families of rational string manifolds. A second pushforward is constructed from quantizing a supersymmetric $σ$-model. These two pushforwards agree, giving a precise physical interpret…
In this paper, we survey recent results on index defects of elliptic operators on manifolds with boundary. Index defects are similar to the Hirzebruch signature defects in topology, where the defects appear as the correction terms to the signature formula on manifolds with boundary. For some natural classes of elliptic operators, the index defects are found and the corresponding topological indices are computed. The theory is illustrated on two examples: operators satisfying Gilkey's parity condition and operators on twisted Z_n-manifolds. The index defect formula in the latter case is stated …
This is an expository paper which gives a proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators, presenting the theorem as a computation of the K-homology of a point. This paper and its follow up ("K-homology and index theory II: Elliptic Operators") was written to clear up basic points about index theory that are generally accepted as valid, but for which no proof has been published. Some of these points are needed for the solution of the Heisenberg-elliptic index problem in our paper "K-homology and index theory on contact manifolds" Acta. Math. 2014.
We give a simple proof of the cobordism invariance of the index of an elliptic operator. The proof is based on a study of a Witten-type deformation of an extension of the operator to a complete Riemannian manifold. One of the advantages of our approach is that it allows to treat directly general elliptic operator which are not of Dirac type.
In this paper, an equality between the Hochs-Mathai type index and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type index is established when the manifold and the group action are both non-compact, which generalizes a result of Ma and Zhang for compact group actions. As a technical preparation, a problem concerning the Fredholm property of the global elliptic boundary value problems of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer type on a non-compact manifold is studied.
We study the Cauchy data spaces of the strongly Callias-type operators using maximal domain on manifolds with non-compact boundary, with the aim of understanding the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index and elliptic boundary value problems.
We study the index of the $G$-invariant elliptic pseudo-differential operator acting on a complete Riemannian manifold, where a unimodular, locally compact group $G$ acts properly and cocompactly. An $L^2$-index formula was obtained using the heat kernel method.
