This paper gives a survey of the index theory of tangentially elliptic and transversally elliptic operators on foliated manifolds as well as of related notions and results in non-commutative geometry.
In this paper the author determines necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of the Ehresmann connection on a manifold foliated by locally free action of the commutative Lie group. Also here we describe structure of $C_0(M)|_L$ for a leaf $L \subset M$ in case such a connection exists. Finally we give some results on structure of the spectrum of the family of Schrödinger operators related to the leaves of the foliation.
We present an index theorem for certain hypoelliptic differential operators on foliated manifolds. Our proof is a development of Alain Connes tangent groupoid proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem. The paper is largely self-contained.
Following Gorokhovsky and Lott and using an extension of the b-pseudodifferential calculus of Melrose, we give a formula for the Chern character of the Dirac index class of a longitudinal Dirac type operators on a foliated manifold with boundary. For this purpose we use the Bismut local index formula in the context of non commutative geometry. This paper uses heavily the methods and technical results developed by E.Leichtnam and P.Piazza.
We discuss the behaviour of the signature index class of closed foliated bundles under the operation of cutting and pasting. Along the way we establish several index theoretic results: we define Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) index classes for Dirac-type operators on foliated bundles with boundary; we prove a relative index theorem for the difference of two APS-index classes associated to different boundary conditions; we prove a gluing formula on closed foliated bundles that are the union of two foliated bundles with boundary; we establish a variational formula for APS-index classes of a 1-parame…
We study primary and secondary invariants of leafwise Dirac operators on foliated bundles. Given such an operator, we begin by considering the associated regular self-adjoint operator $D_m$ on the maximal Connes-Skandalis Hilbert module and explain how the functional calculus of $D_m$ encodes both the leafwise calculus and the monodromy calculus in the corresponding von Neumann algebras. When the foliation is endowed with a holonomy invariant transverse measure, we explain the compatibility of various traces and determinants. We extend Atiyah's index theorem on Galois coverings to these foliat…
We relate the spectral flow to the index for paths of selfadjoint Breuer-Fredholm operators affiliated to a semifinite von Neumann algebra, generalizing results of Robbin-Salamon and Pushnitski. Then we prove the vanishing of the von Neumann spectral flow for the tangential signature operator of a foliated manifold when the metric is varied. We conclude that the tangential signature of a foliated manifold with boundary does not depend on the metric. In the Appendix we reconsider integral formulas for the spectral flow of paths of bounded operators.
We compute the equivariant cohomology Chern character of the index of elliptic operators along the leaves of the foliation of a flat bundle. The proof is based on the study of certain algebras of pseudodifferential operators and uses techniques for analizing noncommutative algebras similar to those developed in Algebraic Topology, but in the framework of cyclic cohomology and noncommutative geometry.
For closed manifolds endowed with a Riemannian foliation of codimension $4$, one can define a transversal Seiberg-Witten map. We show that there is a finite dimensional approximation for such a map. By such a method and under the condition that $H^1_b(M)\cap H^1(M,\mathbb Z)$ is a lattice of $H^1_b(M)$, we can define a foliated version of Bauer-Furuta invariant. Moreover, if the basic cohomological group is of zero dimension, we can give an estimate for the index of transversal Dirac operator of a foliated spin structure. Furthermore, under the condition that $H^\pm_b(M)=1$, we show the vanish…
We introduce the concept of Roe C*-algebra for a locally compact groupoid whose unit space is in general not compact, and that is equipped with an appropriate coarse structure and Haar system. Using Connes' tangent groupoid method, we introduce an analytic index for an elliptic differential operator on a Lie groupoid equipped with additional metric structure, which takes values in the K-theory of the Roe C*-algebra. We apply our theory to derive a Lichnerowicz type vanishing result for foliations on open manifolds.
Let X be a smooth compact manifold with boundary. For smooth foliations on the boundary of X admitting a `resolution' in terms of a fibration, we construct a pseudodifferential calculus generalizing the fibred cusp calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose. In particular, we introduce certain symbols leading to a simple description of the Fredholm operators inside the calculus. When the leaves of the fibration `resolving' the foliation are compact, we also obtain an index formula for Fredholm perturbations of Dirac-type operators. Along the way, we obtain a formula for the adiabatic limit of the eta inva…
Using the method of Witten deformation, we express the basic index of a transversal Dirac operator over a Riemannian foliation as the sum of integers associated to the critical leaf closures of a given foliated bundle map.
Given a fiber bundle $Z \to M \to B$ and a flat vector bundle $E \to M$ with a compatible action of a discrete group $G$, and regarding $B / G$ as the non-commutative space corresponding to the crossed product algebra, we construct an analytic torsion form as a non-commutative deRham differential form. We show that our construction is well defined under the weaker assumption of positive Novikov-Shubin invariant. We prove that this torsion form appears in a transgression formula, from which a non-commutative Riamannian-Roch-Grothendieck index formula follows.
The twisted Connes-Moscovici higher index theorem is generalized to the case of good orbifolds. The higher index is shown to be a rational number, and in fact non-integer in specific examples of 2-orbifolds. This results in a non-commutative geometry model that predicts the occurrence of fractional quantum numbers in the Hall effect on the hyperbolic plane.
From 1980s, it is an open problem of proposing cohomologic formula for the basic index of a transversally elliptic basic differential operator on a vector bundle over a foliated manifold. In 1990s, El Kacimi-Alaoui has proprosed to use the Molino theory for study this index. Molino has proved that to every transversally oriented Riemannien foliation, we can associate a manifold, called basique manifold, which is équiped with an action of orthogonal group, El Kacimi-Alaoui has shown how to associate a transversally elliptic basic differential operator an operator on a vector bundle, called usef…
Using recently introduced Debord-Skandalis Blup's groupoids we study index theory for a compact foliated manifold with boundary inducing a foliation in its boundary. For this we consider first a blup groupoid whose Lie algebroid has sections consisting of vector fields tangent to the leaves in the interior and tangent to the leaves of the foliation in the boundary. In particular the holonomy $b$-groupoid allows us to consider the appropriate pseudodifferential calculus and the appropriate index problems. We further use the blup groupoids as the one above, and in particular its functoriality pr…
The notion of topological degree is studied for mappings from the boundary of a relatively compact strictly pseudo-convex domain in a Stein manifold into a manifold in terms of index theory of Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space. The index formalism of non-commutative geometry is used to derive analytic integral formulas for the index of a Toeplitz operator with Hölder continuous symbol. The index formula gives an analytic formula for the degree of a Hölder continuous mapping from the boundary of a strictly pseudo-convex domain.
Topological degrees of continuous mappings between manifolds of even dimension are studied in terms of index theory of pseudo-differential operators. The index formalism of non-commutative geometry is used to derive analytic integral formulas for the index of a 0:th order pseudo-differential operator twisted by a Hölder continuous vector bundle. The index formula gives an analytic formula for the degree of a Hölder continuous mapping between even-dimensional manifolds. The paper is an independent continuation of the paper "Analytic formulas for topological degree of non-smooth mappings: the od…
We construct a canonical noncommutative spectral triple for every oriented closed Riemannian manifold, which represents the fundamental class in the twisted K-homology of the manifold. This so-called "projective spectral triple" is Morita equivalent to the well-known commutative spin spectral triple provided that the manifold is spin-c. We give an explicit local formula for the twisted Chern character for K-theories twisted with torsion classes, and with this formula we show that the twisted Chern character of the projective spectral triple is identical to the Poincaré dual of the A-hat genus …
We define the equivariant family index of a family of elliptic operators invariant with respect to the free action of a bundle $\GR$ of Lie groups. If the fibers of $\GR \to B$ are simply-connected solvable, we then compute the Chern character of the (equivariant family) index, the result being given by an Atiyah-Singer type formula. We also study traces on the corresponding algebras of pseudodifferential operators and obtain a local index formula for such families of invariant operators, using the Fedosov product. For topologically non-trivial bundles we have to use methods of non-commutative…
